The self-service kiosks that McDonald's began installing in 2018 are somewhat ingenious fast food technology. They are certainly a great convenience for the customer and mean that diners do not have to waste time giving their orders to cashiers, while cashiers can concentrate on serving orders.
There is only one small problem: hygiene. Scientists found that McDonald's kiosks tend to be covered in bacteria, including fecal and other digestive bacteria. Dr. Paul Matewele from London Metropolitan University explained it this way: "We were all surprised by the amount of intestinal and faecal bacteria on the touchscreen machines. These cause the kind of infections people get in hospitals. For example, Enterococcus faecalis is part of the flora of the gastrointestinal tract of healthy humans and other mammals." Dr Matewele's research was carried out in restaurants in the UK and found that the touch screens in each of eight different restaurants harbored live bacteria.
McDonald's responded by issuing a statement: "Our self-ordering screens are cleaned frequently throughout the day. All of our restaurants also offer facilities for customers to wash their hands before eating." What do you think of that fancy new technology now? "You can't stand the truth." Since the McDonald's experience tends to focus more on food than anything else, you'd be forgiven if you overlook some of its most useful technologies. What you get is essentially a Big Mac, minus the center bun and sesame seed bun, for about half of the price. But is it really worth it? It could be, and here's why. The meat and cheese are identical to those found in the Big Mac, although the construction of the burger creates a slightly different experience.
Big Macs are made the other way around and the toppings are placed under the burger, while the McDouble has its toppings on top. And that means the cheese in the McDouble melts better than the cheese in the Big Mac. By your measure, the toppings appear to be the same on both burgers, although the Big Mac is significantly taller and a little heavier. However, in essence, it's just the bun and some seeds that make the Big Mac much more expensive than the McDouble. It is not yet known which is the best option and much of it depends on taste.
But if you're working on a tight budget, the poor man's Big Mac might be your best bet. "It's not a Big Mac." "Is." "No." "Is." "No." "I think it is." "Well, I guess it's not." "Mmmmm." In a statement given to Business Insider, who first leaked the news, a McDonald's representative explained that it was simply a matter of rationalization. They said: "We always want our customers' experiences to be simple, seamless and delicious, at any time of the day. That means, day and night, we are always looking for ways to serve them even better." Nothing surpasses the ingenuity of humanity.
Take McDonald's so-called "secret menu" as an example.
