Doctor Sleep (2019) KILL COUNT

May 31, 2021
Welcome to Kill Cow, where we

count

the victims of all our favorite horror movies, today is a special day because we are watching Dr. Sleep, the sequel to The Shining released in

2019

. This movie means a lot to me, I don't know. I know where to start. I've been a Stephen King fan my whole life thanks to my dad and I read the 2013 novel Dr. Sleep. When I found out there was a movie adaptation being made, I enjoyed the book, but I had some issues with it, mostly. I feel like things were too easy for the protagonists, that's not the case at all with the movie, which I actually enjoyed more than the book, but that's not a big surprise considering it was written and directed by Mike Flanagan.

Flanagan has been working in the horror genre since his absentee film debut in 2011, since then his work has included the well-known Ouija sequel Karen Gillen, starring Oculus, and The Phenomenal Silence he made with his wife Kate. siegel, where I previously covered the death

. He is also responsible for the appearances of The Hill House and Bly Manor series on Netflix, as well as Gerald's fantastic game based on another Stephen King novel that was once considered unfilmable, but he made it filmable because Mike Flanagan kicks ass . I'm a big stupid fan of everything he does because he always writes. characters that interest you and use the camera in the scariest way possible.

More Interesting Facts About,

doctor sleep 2019 kill count...

I should probably take a minute to reveal that the first time I saw Dr. Sleep was on a paid Warner Brothers trip that took Chelsea and me to the Stanley Hotel in Colorado and allowed us to interview Flanagan and his producer Trevor Macy. The experience is still the best thing I've ever been able to do thanks to dead meat, so I'm sure you can say that it helped me like this movie, but I also love Dr. Sleep because it's a really good movie, this is a director at the top of their game giving us a vast tapestry of unique images to look at as we explore the magical world of the shiny.
doctor sleep 2019 kill count
There aren't many horror movies that truly feel epic, but I can do that for sure. Let's say Dr. Sleep is among them, he sets up a group of characters across the country, lets you get to know them, and then crosses over their stories and their combative, tragic ways, all their lives tied together by the ambiguous psychic power known as the glow, though follows an adult Danny Torrance played by Ewan McGregor. The great thing about Dr. Sleet is that it is a unique and original story. This movie would be amazing even if it wasn't a brilliant sequel, and for the first two hours of its running time, for the most part it is.
doctor sleep 2019 kill count
The last half hour is a great reminder of his source material and is probably the weakest part of the film, but it's still an impressive feat considering Flanagan had to serve two masters as a fan. For a long time I felt there were two visions. of the brilliance that seemed to be in competition within the minds and hearts of many fans, the brilliance of Stephen King and the brilliance of Kubrick, the man pulls it off because he is a damn virtuoso. I consider that we are all lucky to live in a world where Mike Flanagan makes horror movies.
One last note. I'll use the theatrical version for the

kill

count, but I also saw the director's cut which adds almost a full half hour of additional footage and guess what that even better version is, so expect a cut. comparison in the next few months two and a half hours is still enough time to

kill

people although let's see how many the movie begins by telling you that it's a sequel to The Shining It's already won me over I'll be honest in 1980 a young man a girl named violet played by violet mcgraw the young woman nell in the haunting of hill house meets a flower picking singer who might be a good friend well hello yeah that's friendly she's pink the hat played by rebecca ferguson in a fucking phenomenal performance and what is. with the hat don't worry it's her pink hat she's doing a trick on violet when she hears a noise from the forest don't worry that's my friend you're missing the trick yes pink the hats have many friends and they are here because Violet is special, Like the house special, it's the specials that taste the best.
Rose grabs Violet's arm and her group attacks the young woman killing her off-screen if she's glad she was off-screen because she was a bit. Boy, I have some bad news for you, but first some good news. Tunnel car, we're back at the overlook and while things may look familiar, every frame of this movie is a new shot, except for three that I'll point out. later, but just think that Flanagan had to recreate the entire interior of the lookout, which, if you remember from the brilliant death count, was a big deal. What Danny Torrance saw in room 237, that is, Mrs.
Massey, the naked ghost lady, continues to haunt him even after escaping the hotel, she and other overlooked demons have been stalking him at home, even passing the time in his bathroom when he tries to pee, I guess you'll have to hold him little man, oh you couldn't hold him, thank God Wendy is there to give it to him. a soggy hug danny hasn't spoken since the gazebo incident but that changes when the ghost of dick halloran shows up the least he can do for that guy is have a conversation, i mean he was the one who taught danny what the afterglow is of everything, and someday, Danny Torrance, you will teach someone else, as this story focuses more on brilliance than even brilliance.
Dick has a lot of glow explaining what to do, he says that glow is an energy that can be used as food by dark things like the lookout. and since Danny shines brighter than anyone I've ever seen, the gazebo ate it all up and if you're still confused as to what exactly the glow is, it's magical, this crucial scene continues as Dick tells the

doctor

how to defeat the spirits. who chase him all the time. What he has to do is create a safe in his mind and he can use it to trap all the ghosts inside.
This conversation is taken from Dr. Sleep's book where it plays out a little differently after all in my book Dick Halloran Lives Kubrick's movie Halloween Dies. Given how important the position of this glow is, I remember wondering how it would be achieved in a sequel to Kubrick's film. I even reflected so much on my brilliant death. Count Dick Halloran survives in the book. He's also alive at the beginning of the Dr. Sleep book, so I'm curious to see what they do with that in the Dr. Sleep movie. In the end it was a simple solution and what Mike did was bring him back as a ghost, which makes a lot of sense in the context of the story and is more evidence that Mike Flanagan was the perfect person for this job.
I also loved his approach to recasting these iconic characters. Carl Lumbley sounds just like the Scat Man brothers and Alex Esso makes an excellent Danielle in the Shelly Duvall style, but Flanagan didn't just want imitations, he wanted character continuity not necessarily actor so it's okay that Roger Dale Floyd doesn't look exactly like danny loy you can still say he's danny torrance just like you could say alex esso was wendy those are big shoes to fill, i think shelly duvall's performance in that is the closest thing to a perfect boxing performance that she doesn't He finds it not at all pleasant.
Damn

doctor

, now he's a big boy and 31 years later, in 2011, a dachshund, a man who gets into bar fights and wakes up next to naked girls, wow, that naked girl. Deeney is played by Chelsea Tallmadge, who was Steve's shitty friend, Carol in Stranger Things, his night of debauchery has left Dan vomited and poor, so he decides to steal cash from the

sleep

ing woman, an immoral act. who became very immoral, the ghost of dick appears. and she chastises him for stealing a hungry baby's mouth, but that doesn't stop Dan from leaving with the cash at a Long Island movie theater.
A man meets a young woman played by Emily Allen Lind, who we have seen as Melanie in In the babysitter movies, the 17-year-old actor plays a 15-year-old boy named Andy who uses his unique powers of persuasion to put the boy to

sleep

. perverts like this boy and steals the boy's money and permanently embarrasses his predator by sticking a snake bite into his face. But Snake by Dandy's powers could be used for so much more, which is why Rose's crow dad lieutenant has tracked her down for Rose to admire in a shot that references another Stephen King adaptation, The Green Mile, although the Snake by Dandy's powers are strong, they are not strong. enough to let her escape rose's attention do you want to let me go no no honey i don't know now we're in the granite state i told you this movie is long where aper Stone is celebrating her fifth birthday with her parents dave and lucy the La The birthday girl can't help but act out the magician who surprises her parents when they discover she's made all the spoons hang from the ceiling, but it's hard to eat a good meal hanging upside down, so Abra drops the utensils and the resulting crash agitates everyone. a drunk.
Danny wakes up and gives Rose the hat a shiver that puts a smile on her face, not that she wasn't happy already, I mean she just took a pusher, you can push people. Rose wants Andy to lobby for them, and in return, she will. She will provide a complete lifestyle that will allow Andy to age so slowly that in a few hundred years she will still be a teenager. Eat well. Stay young. She lives a long time. Grandpa Flick played by Carol Stryken, who was rocking in the Addams Family movies and fucking terrifying in Gerald's game and lays on Rose's crotch, which reminds me that they made love in the book and with a sermon from Flick the group agrees to tie up Andy's life. in his, the real one so as not to lead Andy into the real knot.
Rose breaks a thermos filled with purple glow they call steam, ready to be run over. Andy, okay, shotgun, little buddy, and he takes a deep breath and undergoes a horribly painful process called a twist that renders her unconscious. When he wakes up it's daylight illuminating the True Knots' caravan and all their boho chic vibes they have, you know, the True Knots turn them into RVs at Burning Man every year, Rose welcomes Andy to her new life with the knot and when Andy asks if she's still human Rose says it doesn't matter you care after hitting rock bottom Dan takes a bus north to a town in New Hampshire called Fraser which in a fun on camera reveal has a older version little of himself in the town square is called Teeny Town built by neighborhood kids and overlooked no pun by billy freeman a wonderful man played by cliff curtis who is in a lot of shit, including a growing fear To the Walking Dead and Meg Billy sees that Dany is a stranger and recognizes him as a man in need, so he connects him with a sweet loft to stay in one that is already furnished and has a chalkboard wall.
Nice why are you doing this? You don't know me, no I don't, but I know the look. I'm glad Dan Dan found it. a new friend because it's hard to have good conversations with people like Dead Deeney, who only wants to talk about how dead she is. I'll take Deeney at her word that she and her poor baby died of overdoses and starvation. Their bodies still rot, where Dany. I left them and if you don't want to see a dead baby don't look because it's a creepy baby corpse. Oh, now the encounter almost leads Dan to drink, but instead he hits Billy, who immediately takes him in because Billy is the best. he takes Danny to a AAA meeting led by Dr.
John Dalton, a character who is much larger in the book. Good call for adaptation, but it's a shame we don't have more Bruce Greenwood, who is Gerald, the one in the game and the only man. good enough for Joan Holloway. Dr. John gives Dan his first day token, as well as a job opportunity in a scene filmed just like Jack's interview at the lookout, as Dan says that dying people don't really bother him. Jon gets him a job at a hospice as an orderly who works there with an adorable kitten named Asriel who looks like the angel of death who bears his same name, since he always knows when a patient is about to die. .
Not a bad last look to see, I guess Dan comforts this guy by telling him that dying is like going to sleep. and that earned him the titular nickname of sleeper shift. The doctor may not have a doctorate, but he does have the glow that he uses to calm the dying man when he leaves the land of the living as he leaves, he exhales a little steam because he remembers. Dick said that everyone has a little shine, most of them just don't know it, of course, Dan has a lot of shine and now that he's in New Hampshire, his shine is discovered by the nearby Abra who writes on his whiteboard and Se She laughs that she has found someone special like her with a job and a pen pal.
Dan can stay sober for the next eight years because we just skipped a little time, motherfuckers, and now it's

2019

. He's still doing his doctor job while he sleeps securing theDying patients like Charlie here. that there's more to life after death and even though we don't see charlie die I'm still telling it because azzy never lies it's okay she's a good kitty for the last eight years dan and abra have maintained occasional communication keeping them at arm's length both at a higher level. spirits that the members of the real no that today look a little worse stop coughing on my hamburger grandpa god the knot has been hungry for steam since that is what these shiny vampires need to sustain themselves we feed on children we eat the Steam Crow Daddy has been trying to find them some food, but he's worried that there isn't as much Steam in the world these days.
He says he might be dulling it with cell phones and Netflix crows played by Zahn McLaren, an actor of Papa Lakota descent who was also Hanzi in season 2 of Fargo and the subject of Westworld's greatest hour loves to see him here as an evil love interest, although the steam supply is dwindling quite a bit. Rose takes out a boat to help the sick grandfather move and make sure the rest. You all can get involved too, go ahead and blow this kid's dust off to replenish your supply. Following a brilliant kid from Iowa named Bradley Trevor, played by Jacob Tremblay, who we saw in The Predator, is a real talent on the diamond , as explained by a viewer played by danny lloyd, who was the original lomo danny taurus and had only played one more role after the shiny and instead of acting became a biology teacher in kentucky, unfortunately for bradley trevor and danny no He is the only one who attends this game while walking home, Bradley is accosted by the Real Knots Van and Snakebite Andy slips into the boy's brain.
Convincing him to come with them, they take him to an old abandoned plant and tie him to the ground for a memorably gruesome scene in which Jacob Tremblay gives a devastating performance. His yelling doesn't work on Rose, who tells him that the more scared she is. The better the steam will taste from him, are you going to hurt me? True to her word, she begins torturing the boy to provide her family with a beast. It's really difficult and disturbing to watch, and while Jacob Tremblay was good at filming the scene, it wasn't that easy. to the people who played his attackers, the actors who played the real knot who had been full of arrogance before the camera rolled, were like, yeah, we're going to kill this kid, we're the monsters, we're literally so shocked that they had to get away.
From the set, the incident is so powerful that Aber intercepts it and she screams in concert with the baseball boy begging his attackers to stop Rose senses Aber is eavesdropping and the connection gives the girl Danny's face. Tauren, but before you can start thinking about future meals, Rose you have to finish the one in front of you. They kill Bradley Trevor slowly and painfully, making the most of his food and saving the last bits for later. Bradley's torture does a number on Abra, who has a conniption in his bed and launches a psychic blast. to dany's board she has to tell him about the robbery red, i mean meldan while burying the baseball boy, rosa tells the crow that they had a powerful viewer spying on them from the east coast, you're saying someone watched from 1500 miles away distance. with power like that, the knot may have found a whale, someone with so much brilliance he could feed his family for decades. open finds the baseball boy he felt was murdered in an online listing of a missing children page using a printout with powers like eleven she can see the entire road trip he was forced to take, including exactly which floor his murder took place on.
I love the overhead shots that are at a weird frame rate, they look so cool, this is one of the film's many strengths in creating images in the same way. Fantastic as the powers in this world are, the wonderful views continue as Abra searches for the killers through her window and when she doesn't find them well there, she simply drops right into their bodies because now she is somehow an observer inside Rose, the hat, Rose senses the psychic intrusion and looks at a reflection that allows her to use the two-way connection, giving her a glimpse of Abra's current vision and even allowing her to interact physically, although not for long.
Well, you were at the supermarket. Rose makes sense. she found some food. Rose returns to the knot and tells daddy crow that her viewer has more steam than they could have anticipated. Is she food or do we make the big question of her crow? But Rose doesn't want that kind of power to compete with - she'd rather they eat yum yum - she misses school the next day and takes a bus to frasier and then instinctively heads to Teeny Town to meet the train driver. Damn the Torrence man with the brain to brain. Hello open. es and they sit together on a park bench, can you hear me, let's use their outside voices, okay, she's excited to find another person who has magic or as Dan tells her, glows when I was a kid, I didn't understand glow. she called him tony abra says the baseball boy had the shine too until he was eaten by bad people while they tortured and murdered him she wants to find the boy's body and bring his killers to justice a lofty goal for a teenager but is believable thanks to Kylie Curran, who beat out more than 800 young actresses to land this role.
She does a great job as Abra, especially in her scenes with Ewan McGregor and I think we're a good team, but Dan doesn't want to get involved and tells her. open it to stop glowing so bad people don't find it it's cowardly advice that earned him a visit later that night a visit from a ghost but it's just dick doc not an overlooked demon so put away those boxes you won't want Put your dick in a stick box by visiting Dan for the first time since seeing him at Demi's decrepit apartment eight years ago. A lot of time has passed.
I can't say that this world is a dream of a dream for me. I love this scene. and the way he remembers how supernatural the afterlife is Dick tells the doctor that he needs to help Abra just like he helped Dan all those years ago, then says that this is the last time Dan will see him and just like that it's gone. become God. that hit is hard, we get another spectacular scene, possibly the most visually impressive in the film, when Rose the hat sits atop his trailer and astrally projects into the night sky with the soundtrack reduced to a heartbeat and breathing heavily, he flies high above the ground trying to feel.
Exactly where Abra is concentrating on the spot, she slowly slides down from the sky and takes a step on the Abra street. Damn, this movie looks so cool, oh man, and it continues as Rose jumps to the side of the abra house and falls horizontally. through the window i can't get over these effects inside abra's room which is actually her brain maybe rose will find a wall of memories that reminds me of another story from stephen king the wild dreamcatcher but the warehouse from abra's memories is actually a hand catcher because this was a trap set by this little nightmare, he said you would come back, abra's costume here scares the hell out of me, but i guess it's a reference to the roostertooth anime, the ruby's character, esmeralda abra, had a ruby poster in her room that was shown earlier, which i think was a set deck suggestion from kylie curran herself, since she's a big fan of abra's rose trap, invades his mind and begins to delve into his memories to learn more about his rose escapes in a manner characteristic of mike flanagan with severe and distressing hand trauma, the effects of this glove removal was performed by prolific makeup artist Bob Kurtzman and his wife Marsha King Kurtzman.
They both had a lot of practice as they made a similar effect on Gerald's game. Now we no longer know how to destroy hands, which we are becoming very good at. With this, Rebecca Ferguson joins the esteemed company of Carla Gugino and Flanagan's wife, Kate Siegel. It's an honor to have your hand destroyed in a Mike Flanagan movie. Rose is able to stumble away from the trap and fall through the roof until she returns to her trailer where she quickly discovers that she is not the only one who has a problem, Grandpa's movie is in bad condition because, unlike what Andy thought, mistakenly signed up for true energy, vampires are not completely immortal, I said live long, eat well since you have I haven't been eating well movies of grandpa about to starve ending a life so long that a Once he reveled with gladiators in Rome I love learning about the extent of his longevity revealed by Rose in a fascinating eulogy and trembled in his towns and Camas and skyscrapers, the members of the real knot are not as developed on screen as in the book, but that doesn't mean their backstories are completely absent.
Mike Flanagan gave us a lot of creative freedoms so we could create our own ideas. own ideas for our character, which is a great gift for an actor, it's fun to hear how Grandpa Flick transformed Andy's apron in 16th century Morocco or how Daddy Raven was a native tracker in the French and Indian War who brought in the costume department headed by terry anderson. a visual element to these stories with trinkets meant to show centuries of travel, like Rose's 100-year-old beaver felt top hat, but all long lives must come to an end and Grandpa Flick dies as he did.
They make all the shiny vampires in a process called cycling. The description of cycling was terrifying in the book and I didn't think it could live up to the screen, but damn, Mike Flanagan did it because of course he did it with his steam and scarcity of remnants of non-solar rays. a feast like a pack. of the hungry animals, things are clearly dire now, so Crow prepares to go capture his whale and, although Rose won't join them since her mental library was compromised, he assures her that he can handle Abra, But I have some tricks of my own.
Abra tells Dan. his meeting with Rose and asks her to go look for the baseball boy's body in Iowa. Dan asks Billy to help with the homework and even though it's a long trip, Billy is a damn brother, they start driving west with Open by checking his progress by astral projection into the In the back seat, he tells Dan about his visit to Rosa's mind, but when he briefly tries with him, he sees her boxes and the guy he overlooks, Rosa's house. your brain is scary after a full day of driving, Billy and Dan pull off the plan, and even though Dan is taking instructions from a teenage girl that Billy can't see, he still supports him enough to help dig because that's the guy of person Billy is.
Dan was proven right when they find a foot and you know which feet are like hands and you know which hands. I usually go with faces and you know what, oh, he throws up. The discovery of this evil shakes Billy to his core and puts his faith in completely and Abra's fucking dad understandably doesn't trust Uncle Dan that much, your Uncle Dad, what the fuck do you think you are? 13 years old, yes, that's going to happen using his powers. Abra stops his father and shows her footage of the baseball boy's murder, allowing her to finally see exactly what his daughter is.
It's time to drink, but nothing for that, thank you and Dan rightfully assumes the truth. has no ways to evade the police, they are ancient energy vampires, after all, they take things into their own hands or more specifically in abra's hands, as a guy named barry briefly used the myth of bradley trevor, abra He uses it to take a look at Barry's present and sees that a motor home full of real nodders is heading towards them on the highway, they are following them through open brilliance, but Dan has a plan that will trick them into something good, they go to a state park for another memorable sequence, one that begins with beautiful, don't break lighting.
Get out the smoke machine for them, bond with Rose, and watch as Nod finally makes it to the park and exits her RV to find Abra sitting at a picnic table. Snake bite. Andy approaches, hissing soothing words that calm Abra enough to get stuck with a needle. full of drugs, that was easy unless the bunny busted it once again. Dan and Billy's gunshots ring out in the trees and as the real knot is also well armed, there was a shootout and they book him back to the RV as the rest of the knot is shot to death one by one, Rose's heartbreak from afar while their entire clan dies, each of them is shot and falls to the ground and cycles out of this world until they are nothing but vapor, delicious, delicious vapor, the minor characters of the real knot were. played by mike flanagan regulars, most of them had performed at the haunted house on the hill robert longstreet who was barry playedthe caretaker mr dudley catherine parker the silent sarri played poppy hill and selena andews apron annie played luke's counselor paige matt clark who played short eddie was not an actor at all, but he worked on Hill House as a set doctor, his regular work.
I thought it might also be fun to have a non-actor and I met him, he just ate it up, eventually Diesel Doug was played by Mike Flanagan's brother James. Which yes, I mean books about guys who just fuck like him. Dan approaches the door of the RV, where the lack of bullets gives Andy an opportunity. She is able to put Dan to sleep briefly and is about to murder some damn misandrous men when Billy shoots her. the motor home another shot knocks her down but she still has enough life to say two last words oh no, no, billy, no billy, the greatest guy ever is killed over a suggestion of suicide and the snake by dandy is able to see it and laugh about it before.
Dying herself and turning into steam, Evra realizes that the crow wasn't there because it turns out that he is in her kitchen poking her in the neck, true to his word, the crow dad overtook Abram and in the process killed his Dad with a knife stabbed in the chest. she finds him later and confirms David's death by the way Ambra's mother, Lucy, left to visit her sick mother before her, which is why she is not close to her. Horror fans may recognize actress Jocelyn Donahue from her starring role in Ty West's House of the Devil. Abra wakes up buttoned tightly.
In Crow's truck with too many drugs inside to properly use his powers, McLaren has his best scene in the movie when he tells Abra that her father is dead and that it's his fault that he was going to have you, so they're deaths, all of them. They just a waste, damn Abra, go broke they fight the temptation to drink and dismay and instead reach out to Abra, even if she can't transmit her powers, maybe she can receive him like a radio that he successfully tunes into. wabr, allowing him to project into the In the back of Crow's car, the glow's ill-defined powers continue as Dan touches his hands and transfers into Abra's body.
Kylie Curran is excellent throughout this movie, but she gets extra points for how well she plays a different character that inhabits her body. Who are you? I'm the guy who killed your friends and that guy has another trick up his sleeve, one that will make the crow wish he'd worn his seatbelt. Dan crashes the car into a tree, sending Daddy Crow through the windshield evoking an anguished cry. From a rose hundreds of miles away, open now in control again approaches the dying crow dad and coldly tells him that he expects his death. It hurts a lot, I think you're in luck, miss, because he doesn't look like he's having fun. .
Abra gets a projected visit from Rose, but now she's completely sure she's not letting it slow her down, she's fine, bitch girl, uh oh. Rose is bringing out the good stuff, I guess she might as well suck up all that steam herself. I don't like that there are real members left alive to share it with Dan and Abra, reconnect and leave for Colorado if Rose comes for a fight, he will choose the place, there is a place, a place that is dangerous for people like us and that means he's probably dangerous for Rose, which could give them a chance.
This marks a turning point in Dr.'s sleep after an hour and 50 minutes of being mostly in. story itself, will now very much be a sequel to The Shining, fittingly, this is when we get the only recycled footage, the gliding shot over Wild Goose Island and two shots of Torrance's Volkswagen driving towards Sun Road. Flanagan took these shots and I changed them from night to day and clear to snowy in post-production. It's a great bridge to the final act that may admittedly reference too much glitter, but I think the rest of the movie earns this final act and tell me it doesn't.
I don't feel anything seeing the viewpoint again boarded up for the last 40 years. Dan tells Abra to keep an eye out in the car while he enters the hotel to wake the place up once again. I am completely amazed at how Flanagan was able to recreate one of the most studied film locations of all time, you can say it was a dream come true for him, simply stunning every time I walk in here, I am floored, it's like walking into your own memories , spent six weeks building sets from the actual plans used. for Kubrick's film and attended what he called forensic film school while trying to recreate iconic shots and angles, everyone got to work bringing the lookout back to life down to the most minute and specific detail that prop master Scott Nyphong was able to find the exact model of typewriter that Jack Torrance used and recreated all the work pages without reproduction even though they barely appear in this movie it seems like everyone was happy to do the work, especially Mike Flanagan, like me, has been a big fan since he was in 5th grade and clearly had fun making this movie, dan turns on the boilers which was part of his dad's job as the winner's caretaker even though we only saw wendy doing it for him, then gives a Take a walk down memory lane by visiting the most free hallways for grady girls these days and her family's old apartment, including the infamous bathroom door.
Here's Obie. His last stop is the golden ballroom, where he sits at the bar just as his father did all those years ago. Slow night, Mr. Torence. Not for long, I imagine the waiter once again. he identifies himself as Lloyd, but that's a hashtag, not my Loy, he's Jack Attack Torres and in case you weren't sure, he proves it by complaining about the wives and children a man tries to provide but is surrounded by mouths and He has a family, a wife and a son. mouths eat time, they eat your days on earth, classic jack, although this scene is an original creation for the movie, the spirit of jack torrance appears in the book, so flanagan always knew he would have to choose someone For the role, they never approached Jack Nicholson since he effectively retired after his role in the 2010 box office bomb, how do you know that left Flanagan with the options of recasting or doing some kind of digital face replacement? strange rogue one grand moff tarkin style?
It was always going to be controversial no matter what. we did, he decided to cast Henry Thomas, who as a child was Elliot and E.T and as an adult was the patriarch in Flanagan's Hill House series. Thomas shaved his head to match Nicholson's high hairline, and although it was a difficult role to play, he deserves great accessories. for making a jack torrance that didn't just become a parody of jack nicholson, although the performance in the original film was basically a self-parody of jack nicholson, flanagan wrote this scene to convince king to give his blessing to this film, It showed the author that the filmmaker understood the themes of how the hotel was a metaphor for addiction and how Jack Torrance was a man terrified of hurting his own family if he didn't get cured.
It was a personal story of Stephen King, who wrote The Shining when he was a functioning but practicing alcoholic. Writing Dr Sleep gave him the opportunity to approach the same material as a newly sober man and this film adaptation allowed him to reconcile some things with Kubrick Shining, which he disliked, calling him cold. The biggest change we made was in the third act, which in the novel takes place in the camp that used to be the site of the overlook hotel, so the plot was: let's keep the hotel alive so we can stage that final battle in the viewpoint itself and the compensation is, you know, us.
We're changing Dr. Sleep's ending, but we'll change it to be the glow ending. That king was never able to see Maid, unlike her father. Dan rejects the free ghost dream, so he is sober when Abra sees Rose approaching the mountain. the viewing deck and the steps in, where he can get a good look at his world famous blood lifts, give them a hand folks, that's a lot of blind roses. Like the blood lifter was an effect that Flanagan couldn't achieve in practice, it was simply too expensive to make. In the same way that Kubrick did, they recreated this sequence digitally.
Rose finds Dan and Abra standing on the stairs of the Colorado room and while she threatens them from Jack's super-productive writing spot, they launch into her plan with two pairs of white eyeballs together carrying Rose. the overlooking hedge maze, which, wow, looks like they've really expanded it over the years. I'm glad to see that the hotel takes pride in its hedges. The rose follows Abra's footprints to the center of the labyrinth, where she finds the young woman waiting to do a mortal kombat. teleport attack oh with a damn mango after some of those roses put an end to that and he's about to monologue his way into a safe when he realizes that this isn't abra's mind at all, that fuck this noise, rosie, sorry, it's nice. try it, how the hell do we miss you?
Probably alcohol, she approaches him and offers him a long life by eating well and persevering. Her response is to hit him with an axe, but he is no match for Rose, her hat, she stabs him in the leg. and throws him down the stairs in an impressive fall performed by mcgregor's stunt double, stephen atkinson, loves to see behind the scenes footage like this, allows us to see the hard work done by the stunt team led by chuck borden, she pounces over him and shows him some thumbs up. Danny's delicious vapor seasoned by a long life of trauma, it tastes risky, she gets too high on her painful memories and when she goes to sniff through her boxes, Dan is happy to open them for her, they are starving the demon horde hungry ignored. she lifted her hat and headed for her face to get that sweet sweet steam together they kill her which happens a little too fast for my liking she's one of my favorite villains but in the end she bikes away leaving nothing but a vapor cloud and a free cloud. hat to take the ghosts and then turn her attention to her favorite boy, hello, donny, and similarly attack him as well.
This is where I think the movie goes too far with the glowing references. I'm fine with the possessed dan chasing abra with an ax because that actually comes from the brilliant novel only it was jack chasing danny but I don't think we needed to hear horus derwent again big party do we? Especially after Dan already referenced that line before, big party, isn't it open? In Room 237, home of the naked, mossy lady who was played by Sally Hooks hilariously wearing five hours of makeup, she often forgot what she looked like with the naked prosthetics and sometimes sat on set with the unbuttoned robe looking indecent even though it actually was.
I didn't forget, Dan finds Abra, but breaks free of her possession and tells her to run away so he can blow up this pop, blow it up, she runs off and although the hotel tries to use the dam to shut down the boiler, he resists and takes . a seat to watch him crumble, instead the flames spread and block his exit, committing him to this sacrifice, but at least he's not alone here. Her ghost mother, Wendy, appears to spend her last moments with him. They are happy together again while the gazebo burns. around them, some time later, Abra talks to the ghost of the damn thing who is visiting her just like Dick used to visit him, she apologizes for what she told him when they met, that she should keep her head down and shine for herself, she shines in aberstone, you shine. and I think that crazy diamond will, as he confesses to his mother that she now talks to ghosts, but she frames it in a comforting way, like Dr.
Sleep himself. We continue in a smaller film. This ending may seem a little cheesy to me, but here it is. It feels in line with Flanagan's signature tone, a kind of melancholic optimism, there can be no horror if there is no caring and love, that's very important. I think a lot of filmmakers miss that and Mike doesn't understand that the movie ends with an open. to the bathroom like young Danny Torrance did, she's ready to lock up Mrs. Massey like midnight with the stars and you fool us, that was big, I guess we got some numbers after all, it was a big kill count, No? 18 people died in the Dr.'s dream, a little more than the two deaths in the shining, there were six female victims and 12 male victims with ages ranging from small children to ancient vampires with a theatrical version duration of 152 minutes that gave us left with a carnage. on average, every 8.44 minutes I will give the golden chainsaw for best kill to grandpa's movie, which also serves as an award for cycling in general.
I think it looks amazing. Sorry, the baseball guy, the boring machete for fewer deaths, will go to that Charlie guy at the hospice, even though he feels like cheating, giving it to him, well, and that's it. Dr. Sleep came out in 2019 and is one of my three moviesHorror favorites of that year along with Ready or Not and The Lighthouse all push very different buttons. For me, once again, you'll get this week's death count a day early because on New Year's Eve I'm watching the strange British movie Bloody New Year until then, I'm James Agenese, it's been the death count.
Thank you very much for watching this. very long kill count i want to thank some sponsors like shannon mcdowell matthew i'm ariana padilla and alex c there's a kill count left for 2020 and it's one of those strange and unknown movies that I always have fun covering, I promised to do a cuts comparison for the Dr. Jennifer's dream and body probably in the first months of 2021. Thank you all, be good people.
