Buy the RT over the Scatpack? Seriously.. Here's what changed!

Apr 13, 2024
welcome back to the Racer I've done this in the past. but things have

changed

a lot since my last video comparing these two cars and nowadays it might be an even better idea to buy a lower trim level and modify it, then go for the higher trim level and pay all the margins. and all the craziness that's going on about it, so today I'm going to go into it a little bit and show you exactly

what

I mean. If you are new to my channel, please do me a big favor, subscribe

here

. in the corner, many of you watch my content but don't subscribe and that helps the channel a lot and with that being said, let's go exactly, so

here

are the two cars I was referring to, this is an RT Challenger, this is a 5.7 liters. naturally aspirated V8 and of course, right here, that's the Challenger Scat Pack.

Basically, these two things are trimmed, in the same way, I mean very similar equipment, all that kind of stuff, but the price is actually very different, of course, 6.4 liters of American Muscle. and this makes more horsepower for the black car, but I feel like the RT is a forgotten model and today I want to talk about why the RT is still valid, especially when you consider all the pricing implications, the margins, everything that Happening with all the top-tier versions, the Charger and the Challenger at the moment, maybe the RT is something worth looking at. I decided to go with two trim levels that are actually very similar on these two cars so I could give you an accurate idea of how the price differs.

More Interesting Facts About,

In these two, this Scat Pack here is a pretty good looking car, it's actually one of the first times I've seen this B come in the car from the factory, but once again you can see it's a 392 Scat Pack and a couple of other graphic stuff on the front of this car, but you can see that the grille on this car actually looks very similar to this particular one. This, of course, is the least expensive car in the RT, but this is an RT plus, so you get an upgraded interior, you get a lot of other little things like that, so these are actually the seats a lot more. pretty This, of course, is a manual car, which I think is pretty cool, but the RT plus has a very nice interior and I'll stop by once.

Again, you have the fuel filler door that is a bit chrome. These two cars look very, very similar. I didn't choose to do a wide body on this car because I don't feel like it's a fair comparison considering

what

this particular car is like. The regular Hemi doesn't come with a wide body, but I'll go ahead and open this up real quick. You can see that it also has upgraded seats inside. Now, of course, it's an automatic car, but they're almost trimmed. exactly the same thing with the exception of of course the power plant, now this particular one has about fifty-six thousand dollar stickers, this one is about forty-six thousand dollars and like I said, this is a RT pretty damn so you can't really add That's a lot more for a RT, whereas on these scat packages they get significantly more expensive.

We have an orange Hemi car out front that costs like sixty-seven thousand dollars, so you can see a big difference in price. These two cars, obviously the big difference between these two cars in particular is the engine and it's pretty rare when you see a company give you two naturally aspirated V8s to choose from, so Dodge obviously still does that through the 2023 model year. And I think. that's pretty cool, so yeah, here's that tried and true, naturally aspirated, 5.7-liter, 375 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque V8, so there's that V8 coming in and of course in the Scat Pack, we all know this includes a lot.
The torque is quite noticeable when you drive these two cars, 485 horsepower and then of course 475 pound-feet of torque, so there's a difference of over 100 horsepower between these two naturally aspirated V8s. and you feel it a little bit when you drive it, but this car still has a lot of power, but like I said, it's ten thousand dollars less for a similarly equipped car and that's just where things start. One of the most successful videos I've made on my channel a couple of years ago. I actually compared these two cars and talked about what it would take to make an RT as fast as a Scat Pack and yes you have to throw a fair amount of mods at it but the truth is the RT is just watered down by the factory , so it reacts a little better to each mod, so you get more horsepower for each mod than on the 6-4.
The 6-4 is highly optimized from the factory. I've talked about it at length, but if you want. To modify your car, the RT is actually a very good platform to do it and you know it used to be where it was like yeah, six, half a dozen, the other one, right? You buy it and then you modify it and spend all that. money by modifying it or you just buy the bigger six four and go to the races and enjoy it. If you can afford the Scat Pack right out of the box, it might be a little better to go for that because then you start modifying that thing and then maybe the profits won't be as much per mod, but you'll still be a little faster if You start modifying that car, we all know that horsepower is pretty hard to come by. with these cars they just don't pick up much when you talk about modifications and then changing the car is very expensive, we are in a car like this, even if you put an exhaust on the car it actually picks up a It has a good amount of power, it has a more restrictive exhaust system, sorry, restrictive, so I definitely think there's some merit to the five seven now, as we all know, things have

changed

quite a bit in the automotive industry from how they used to be.
It's kind of a buyer's market as we know it now, dealers are charging all kinds of money for car decals and at the end of the day the Scat packages are seen with a lot of branding on these cars, they're just tough to find. on the sticker and when you decorate these things you go wide body or like an orange Hemi package or something like that. I mean, these things will go up to the 70 to 75,000 range and that may include some dealer markup there. while on the RT you almost never see the dealer markup on these cars, you just don't see it very often, there is more to go around, so everything changed once supply became much lower and demand slowed down. kept very high and nice, but this really is the bargain of the V8 family at the moment, we all know that if we jump up to a Hellcat, the dealer profit margin continues to go up and up, so with each trim level you get more and more dealer markup, but with this particular model a lot of times you can find them on the sticker or sometimes even better, and on the used car market you often notice an even bigger difference when you compare similar versions with similar mileage and years and all that kind of stuff, so now more than ever.
It's really worth trying to modify an RT to get equal or more horsepower than just buying a new or used Scat Pack with similar equipment, so as I mentioned before, the sticker price is about ten grand difference between these two particular cars based on the Once you add the margins and all the other things that go into it, the price is very different between these two cars, so what I want to do is go to the house, show you some more examples of this and then write. I want to give you my opinion on what to do with this to make it as fun or more fun than a 6'4, so here's what I did in my video quite a while ago.
Times were quite different because back then. They're worth the crazy margins that you see now, like I mentioned, a ten thousand dollar difference. I mean, you can go right to Dodge's website and you can see pretty much the same thing, but of course then you get all the special edition scat packages and the wide body kit that cost six grand and all that kind of stuff. things. Sky packages can really scale up there. In terms of money, I mean, like I said, you might find them on a lot for 70 or 75,000 in some cases, which is crazy.
Now the RT is a little different, true, some people say it's not as fun to drive or it doesn't have torque or anything like that, but in my opinion the RT is still a really great platform because Ford doesn't give you two . Naturally aspirated V8s just don't work well, you have a Shelby, you know you have a supercharged version and a naturally aspirated version and of course you know you have another one, you know it has like a Mach 1 and some things like that, but I want I mean, it's essentially the same engine and the same thing when you go to Chevy, you have that naturally aspirated 6.2 liter, yeah, you basically have like the LT1, which is basically like the V6 body and all that. kind of thing, but it's basically just a naturally aspirated V8.
Dodge still gives you two options, which I think is really cool, but the RT gets a bad rap because yeah, it's not as fast as the Scat Pack, so it falls into a It's a bit of a weird category and I've mentioned that. in the past. He's kind of the red-headed stepchild if you will of Dodge, but maybe he shouldn't be. There is some merit to this and now that it is much cheaper. get that comparable uh Scat Pack um you really need to think hard about maybe going the RT route so here's why now in my other video I talked about this but to keep your car naturally aspirated if you have an RT or you're going to to get one and actually go out and compete with a standard step package, you have to do quite a bit of work on it, probably nine to ten thousand dollars worth of stuff, from a cold air intake, you know you want Port. your intake on top of the engine, um, certainly important, the throttle body wouldn't hurt your long tubes, a cam most likely to get that extra 110 horsepower that will be needed to get there, um, the really restrictive exhaust on the RT.
It is more restrictive than the Scat Pack, so certainly a three inch Cat-Back would do you some favors, there is a lot that goes into high flow cats and long tubes, all you have to get. You have to get both, but you can do it in stages, that's the best, so for nine or ten Grand, you can basically turn your car into something that will compete with an original Scat Pack and of course we know that's the price tag, so My advice before was to look, is it really worth it or you can go the boosted route and I've always said this if you boost an RT or a Scat Pack 6-4, um, you need to keep your boost relatively low, those engines I just don't really like the boost much, but if you go for a professional charger, there is a Maggie out there, actually, there are a ton of different superchargers and there really isn't that much difference in price. keep your Boost at that kind of stock, maybe at a six, six to seven pound level, um, you can still easily gain more than the power of the Scat Pack with something like that and keep pumping gas to do it and before you say, look , is prohibitively expensive.
Doing this when you could just go out and buy the Scat Pack, but because of the way these cars have become more and more expensive from the manufacturer and because of all the dealer markup right now, it's kind of a I better try to go out and do this to your RT than go out and pay all the money for the Scat Pack. The tables have turned now. I feel like it's worth mentioning, but the comparison between the RT and the Scat Pack 6-4. Um, I feel like it's a little bit more valid in terms of yes, it takes money to get there, but it's very doable.
I've also done videos in the past where I talk about how to get 6-4 and take that stat package. and make Hellcat type power, which is much harder to do and is actually expensive from a preventative standpoint, there just isn't much point in trying to do it, you might as well try to find a used Hellcat, but when you get to the internet and start searching Used RTS that don't even have many miles on them, one of my favorite sites. Auto Trader, you can go in there, you can do the research yourself, but basically, for the 30-30s, you can get a car that's actually only a couple years old and relatively low miles, you know, we're talking about the RT and that not too bad considering you're getting a V8 and the best thing about the RT is that it comes with the exact same transmission that the Scat Pack does, that's not a weakness there and when it comes to sound with a comparably equipped Cat-Back system , the two cars sound very similar, they both sound very robust and very healthy with a really solid Outback system. on the back so you don't lose the sound aspect when you go to the RT and modify it and like I said, you know, I mean these cars can be a lot of fun to modify, especially if I'm talking about boost.
I said keep your momentum slow, but it's a good viable option. You see a lot of guys out there creating Scat Pack power or more that increase their RT and can still maintain a lot ofreliability, so I would go out and maybe pick up a 2018-2019 RT, uh, that doesn't have a lot of miles on it and just have fun modifying it, maybe before I go out and spend 65 grand on a Scat Pack so I don't take anything away. from the Scat Pack, I love them, many of you own them. I had one, um, but the RT definitely has its merits, especially now.
The last thing I want to mention about RT is that yes. I mean it has some small drawbacks. I mean, yeah, it doesn't have the Scat Pack on the side and it doesn't come in a wide body, but again, you're talking about an extra six grand if you want to go wide body, but you find them at the dealership. Many quite regularly. I mean, five sevens, very reliable. I mean, it's an engine that Mopar has used in all kinds of things for a long time and it just works. and like I said, I love the fact that it responds well to modifications and that you can do it in stages if you want to do something naturally aspirational or you just want to go all out and get your tax return and you accidentally have to do some convincing.
The wife who ordered a supercharger, knows that kind of thing, but she'd still consider modifying the RT with everything going on in the world if she's on a budget, maybe this could be a really fun build. I know the RT. It just doesn't get the recognition it deserves, a lot of people look down on the RT in that trim level, but I never owned that car, it's still a lot of fun to drive and for the budget conscious person I mean. It's a really solid option, so anyway I just wanted to post this for you guys, give you something and there you have it.
That's my argument for why the RT might actually be the best model to go out and buy right now. Guys, let me know what you think about this. I'd love to hear it in the comments below and I'll see you in the next one, so until then Racer X.
