Let's make a

bicycle

frame with hydraulic rams. Now if you're new here, I've done things with bikes before. We have the social distancing bike, we have the jet bike, and we have the spring bike, where I changed all the tubes to springs so it would wobble! , so it can grow, change shape and do all kinds of fun things. Now I usually buy a bike, cut it up, adapt it and add things to it.

But I've decided that I'm going to use the bike so little that I might as well start from scratch. Now

Now this thing looks absolutely fantastic, stainless steel, black hydraulics, it looks brilliant! A lot of work has gone into this! If anything, I'm more curious and excited about what this will be like, because you can really make very strange shapes with this bike. Let it do what it wants because at this point there is no hydraulic pressure in any of the cylinders. They're just flexible, they're fine, you can barely hold it like a bike, which looks like a bike without it, like it's dropped naturally in some weird, strange shape. Now making the bike frame is only half the task here, because now we have to put some sort of hydraulic lines from the hydraulic motor, some controls to this thing, without it reaching it and making it not look like a bicycle anymore, and just a lot of electronics and gadgets and all that.

So how am I going to do that, Colin? Because, you know, I want to keep it tidy! Hydraulics people, this is where it's going to get complicated. Now I have this motor and I connected it to this little hydraulic pump. I'm going to put that on the back of the seat tube. I'm going to fill the seat tube with oil, that's going to be our oil reservoir, and then we need a solenoid valve so we can change the directions in or out, and then we're going to have to have some sort of manifold from which all the tubes come and hopefully the whole bike won't look a complete mess after this.

Yeah, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, but I like it. Hey it's finished! It's covered in plumbing now, but I think this looks pretty cool. If that happened to pass by you on a bike, you would be nothing but intrigued. So, I got a reduction gear motor that drives this little pump. The seat post is full of oil, but I added this extra reservoir because there isn't enough oil in there to expand all the cylinders, if you wanted to do them all at once. Now the solenoid valve, I had to make my own aluminum block, so I could get all the ports where I want them.

Everything is set. It has valves on each side of each cylinder. BUT can I actually ride it and what is it like? You can feel the weight of the bike. Open the valve to the right. Valve on. The forks go up! With the flip of a switch, we're like a lowrider. Let's try to raise the backrest. This is not a good idea. So the front forks and rear triangle work very well. So I have to check a little, now it's time to pay attention to the center cylinders in the middle of the bike. Now, to operate the cylinders on this bike, you basically just open the valves, which correspond to the one you want to move.

So if you want to move this one in the middle, I opened those two and then you basically just hit the switch and then it will do that and it will move. Now, the biggest problem we have is that there comes a point where the bike loses all of its geometry and completely falls apart. Ah, we're back again! So I can't do that while I'm traveling, but of course it means that the whole point of this is that you can make some pretty strange shapes. The latest in lowriders! Endomachine! Super long bike! Super long and tall bike!

True, this is all very well, Colin, but can you really put it together in any of these ways? Strange bike! I literally feel like I'm going to go over the handlebars and everything is going to collapse at any moment. I do not like this! It's like I'm lying on the bike. No, that doesn't work too low. It just looks like it's going to break. The hydraulic bicycle! It looks so cool! This is all very well, Colin, but is it really of any use? Well, there's one: you can bike up or down hills and always be level!

There we are the hydraulic bicycle! What I mean, every time I look at it, I think it looks absolutely amazing. You probably saw it in the thumbnail and thought it's fantastic. I will take a look. A couple of extra things, if you're wondering why I haven't gone down like hell or done any jumps, there's a lot of flex and a lot of torque in the chassis or whatever you want to call it. that, because there are so many joints and things and obviously the hydraulic cylinders, you know, they can rotate relative to each other quite freely, which adds to a bit of an unnatural and jittery driving experience, and also the fact that it's heavy, it's very heavy!

I have weighed it. 53 kilos! Yes, it's heavy, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have beautiful stainless steel, beautiful black hydraulics, beautiful plumbing, it's just brilliant!
