Ben Simmons regressed to worst version of himself Nick on 76ers' Game 7 loss | FIRST THINGS FIRST

Mar 23, 2022
i have to start with this that the rise of trey young is wonderful for the nba not only his

game

is great but his personality is his asset ok you will either love him or hate him and either way thats great for the basketball world is either a villain or a hero and that's awesome so he's huge however he's just one of the few young players to emerge in this postseason we have devin booker we have donovan mitchell we even have john moran and deandre ayton so they are proving the

game

will be in good hands when lebron in that generation passes him huh but as great as trey has been it's obvious philly i would be surprised if anyone on this panel disagrees with philadelphia because we're talking about the end of the process as we know it at least that should be the goal now if i'm darryl moore i'm doing everything i can to trade ben

simmons

for a point guard or playmaker who is a star now that's not easier said than done I'm not just giving it away but I'm a I'm trying to move up in that position to someone who's going to shoot the basketball because in today's NBA it's not the 80's or 90's the game everything is not played in the paint.
ben simmons regressed to worst version of himself nick on 76ers game 7 loss first things first
In today's NBA you have to be able to shoot the basketball and obviously. ben has his issues there so while i try to move him i have him locked in the gym with the shooting coach and i think he may have already seen a sports psychologist but he definitely needs it and he admitted it after the game. he needs to work on his mind so you have to put him to work with someone in sports psych because he clearly didn't want to shoot he let that layup go late in the game and doc rivers wouldn't fire doc but it has to be an argument i hate getting rid of a coach after a year and i wouldn't do it this soon but it has to be a discussion because they look like they did with brett brown mentally weak in the clutch bad decision making turnovers that's how they've done it i heard all three years previous ones with brett brown and brett got crushed by it now again i wouldn't but i'd be surprised if they don't have a discussion about it because the evidence is just the latest bit of evidence for doc fails in these situations and that could happen i didn't think that stan van gundy would be fired after a year i think the guy in indiana fired after a year i mean that seems to be the trend so i'd be surprised if it happens, but it's gotta be a discussion so those are the types of serious ramifications we're talking about with philadelphia but listen listen let's give the doctor some credit you know it's not like looking at him you know how this team elevated ya you know, this short season and off-season, so that has a lot to do with it and even embiid and b, yeah he's a great player, but this year he was dominant and he should have won mvp, if he hadn't dropped so many. times like he did so you have to give doc some credit there but on the other end you know i lost a little bit of respect for doc because i dont like how he talked about ben

simmons

after that game seven people are throwing you stones i don't know the coach you've been your whole career i know the person everyone in the nba loves so when it's hard and people are throwing stones at you don't start drifting you take it you say that's on me so i don't like it that when it comes to doc.

More Interesting Facts About,

ben simmons regressed to worst version of himself nick on 76ers game 7 loss first things first...

I think I still think it's too early. I don't think they had a discussion because of the progress this team has made now if Ben stood up and did what he was supposed to on the offensive end we're talking about a guy that yeah he should be able to get 15 19 points this night and didn't do it consistently throughout the playoffs this would be a different discussion now when we talk about uh uh what's the biggest problem bringing young uh on the falcons or t the sixers second round exit i have to go with the hawks now this is hard to do coming off this limb but when you think about this you have uh lloyd pierce he was there for three years won 63 games uh uh and lost 120 now when he was fired in early march nate mcmillan was done position this was a 12 year veteran played point guard in the nba understood the game from an iq point of view at a high level ever since they were 35 and 15 years old. we weren't talking about the hawks all year we weren't talking we were talking about the sixers we were talking about the nets we were talking about giannis and the bucks we miss these guys this is not a hot team this is not a performing team top this is a really good team so we need to stress that to me the bigger story is bringing in youngsters and the rise of the hawks this is a really good team

nick

well listen up trey one of the best playoff debuts we have.

I've seen him average 29 and 10. He's led a team that doesn't have another player on the team who's even close to an All-Star by now the conference finals, for which I give Trey credit for to have said what Broussard said is correct. This is the end of the process. If Joel Embiid was selected to start the process, now he's come and gone and Philly didn't make a conference final at that point Cleveland made four Toronto made two Boston made three Milwaukee made two Atlanta made two Miami made one Billy can't get out of round two and wild cards if i had told my dear friend daryl murray before the year this is the deal you guys can win the title this year under these circumstances you will never have to play lebron james or anthony davis you will never have to play steph curry dame lillard or nicola yokic probably won you don't have to play kawaii and by the way you'll never have to play kd hard and kyrie you can win the title without playing any of those guys and by the way in a series where you lead 2-1 you they're going to be up 18 in the second half and th in the series you're tied 2-2 you're going to be home up 26 in the second half and somehow in that same series you're going to be in a game seven at home where the I jor opposing team player five for 23 and their second best player obviously bogdanovic arguably is injured and by the way what about our best guy embiid? oh, he's great all the time, he has a bad game, but other than that, he averages around 30 points. up please give me a title and correct and your only injury is danny green and instead ben just

now i think in fairness ben if you take top 15 players in the league embiid and giannis they're the two

worst

fits for ben i do but zero shot attempts in the fourth quarter it can't happen it doesn't happen if you're pj tucker it didn't happen for andre roberson it can't it can't happen when you're the guy with the ball in your hands and if you're doc just sometime he has to deal we have to get through this game we'll take care of everything later for example you needed to get ben off the court as good as he was on trey you need to get him off the court because he was lost at the time restart in the next round say whatever you're going to do it they didn't and now this is for me one of the most impactful four games games four five six seven of this series that I can remember for Philly to have it at there for them and then screwing it up, it's unbelievable, yeah, so for me, my kind of anger at Ben Simmons for not shooting has subsided substantially. he didn't reach his potential and I think everyone should be empathetic to that and we saw a little bit with Markelle Fultz where people were mad because he was a high draft pick and it's like, oh no, there's something else going on and then all kinds of sports started rooting for markelle fultz and for mark help ful to improve he had to leave and i think the same has to happen to ben simmons i dont know where he will go i think in the short term he should play for australia andrew like you know what i i'm going to shoot a lot here i'm on a big stage it's a real game i just think there's a limit to what you can do in the gym by yourself because i don't think that's the problem maybe he's shooting wrong hand and maybe you can work on it but i think it needs the pressure of a big showcase why don't i throw it to you? you said yes he would move ben simmons easier said than done where you going is cj i know he's out there but earlier this year he toughened up and that got kicked off well cj ain't toughened up and if portland don't want do it, I don't know what your other options are, who are you trying to download? 30 million dollars in the match up there porzingis like give me some ideas what this trade looks like zach levine ye ah maybe yeah no i mean obviously he talks about a fit he wouldn't fit with luca at all , um, so cj mccullum makes some sense as good as cj.
ben simmons regressed to worst version of himself nick on 76ers game 7 loss first things first
I try to improve but cj is a bona fide 20 point score. if cj had played most of his career in the east he probably made a couple of stellar teams so it's not bad you know guy to go team with embiid i would seriously look at it um it's just that I hope it's good. I heard his press conference he was very took full responsibility for

himself

even though we didn't see that on our date so I hope he learns from this and starts working harder than he has so far and we're talking too from the sixer setback another person we haven't talked about who we need is to buy their hair the last thing you want to be in any pickup game in america or around the world is the guy they call self check so when you think about his score number two and you think about you know what this organization did stood up and paid this guy I mean how many times have we seen him let you know in the paint on the high elbow post and do this little fade and come up short?
We see kd he's automatic from there he even yawns like hell. uh the hook shot he makes is automatic and then you have tobias harris coming up short you know play after play after play or possession after possession after possession so he's someone we need to talk about so yeah doc rivers he's the coach for start with him ben simmons we're talking about a guy who should be a superstar in this league but why did this team lose? You also have to throw tobias harris a name in the hat, jenna, thanks for watching, subscribe here to get the latest on the show.
