Air Canada Rouge A319 and B767 Economy - Las Vegas to Calgary to Toronto

May 31, 2021
Hi, I'm in Las Vegas right now in a possibly very nice hotel room and I'm about to head back home to Toronto. This was a work trip, so I could have returned home on the pointy end of a direct flight, but instead I chose to do the complete opposite sitting in

economy

class on a low-cost airline, my first flight today has me heading north from Las Vegas towards a frozen ninth circle of hell we refer to as Calgary, from here it's a couple of hours huddled in the living room trying not to lose my fingers will freeze before I hop on a 767 for my second trip to Toronto.

This is the first time I'm making a film about a budget airline and to do it justice, of course, I have to fly

economy

class. Now I'm really excited about this. trip because Air Canada Rouge only operates two types of aircraft: the Boeing 767 and the Airbus a320 family of aircraft, both of which they inherited from Air Canada's main fleet, and I'm excited because on today's itinerary I'll be testing both planes. so he would have covered his entire fleet so he would never have to fly with them again. Sorry to interrupt, but during the making of this video some unfortunate news came up and this really isn't a surprise, but Air Canada Rouge is retiring all of their A319s and Boeing 767s, which happen to be the two types of aircraft I took on this trip.

I don't think it's a coincidence, yes, it's a coincidence. Due to these circumstances, this video is going to be more of a swan song than a normal vlog, the city of Las Vegas actually ignores the city of Las Vegas, instead, most of what you know about Las Vegas It is paradise, not literally just nominally, this place is far from paradise, the actual municipality called Las Vegas borders it to the north, but most of the casinos and even the Las Vegas sign is in Paradise. The reason this place is not a city is simple institutionalized tax evasion, since you see, Paradise is an unincorporated municipality in Nevada, so the casinos here are not.

I don't have to pay taxes or break municipal laws, why you ask right, because paying taxes and following the laws would be decidedly un-American. McCarran International Airport is smack dab in the middle of the metropolitan area, about a ten-minute drive from Las Vegas Boulevard, which everyone knows as the strip is unusually convenient for a major airport, but not surprising considering tourism is its industry. predominant here; However, for a city that makes money off of drunk people coming to have a good time, they really don't make it easy for them. The layouts and train lines can be completely confusing, but it doesn't matter, I'm leaving here and flying near Canada, that means I'll be checking in at the new Terminal 3 and I immediately ran into a problem.

See, what happened was at the check-in counter they offered me a free upgrade to the premium cabin with no strings attached. Now you're probably mad at me for calling this a problem, but you see, I promised I would review this budget airline like it should be. in economy class and so I was conflicted in the end I explained to the bewildered checker to an agent that I didn't want to sit in business class and she ended up giving me back my economy seats without knowing exactly what had just happened. After confirming my downgrade to coach, I headed to TSA security and somehow still managed to make my way to the first class line.
If you rat me out, I will kill you and, consequently, I will quickly go through the pat-down process. I know. how to get to the D gates, which requires an underground trip before taking a train. This airport has three separate train lines and they can be confusing, so be sure to check your map and read the signs carefully if you're like me and a bit dim, you could get lost just like I did with Riah merging into the world of surface and with exactly 47 and a half minutes to spare before boarding, I decided to go find a breakfast lounge on the Rouge flights.
They are still considered Air Canada flights and therefore I still had the full spectrum of privileges that my status affords me, culminating here in this very average United Club, it was completely full at the time, so all you'll see is if it's that strange. variety of snacks I ate while returning to the public area. I'm trying to get some images of my right today, but it didn't turn out to be a very fruitful prospect anyway. If you're watching this, you probably know what. an

looks like anyway so I'm not going to bother, the terminal itself is a bit more interesting if you've never been through this airport before you might be surprised to see slot machines available on the concourse but then again, This is Las Vegas or paradise and the experience begins the moment you step off your plane.
Anyway, boarding for my flight soon began starting with zones 1, 2 and 3 and so on, my altitude status once again meant I was able to board with the first group. and very quickly found my 12d seat. Now this is the first row of economy seats and is also considered a seat with extra legroom. Selecting these preferred seats, as they are called, is free for those with a status of 50k or more, something I took advantage of. As expected, legroom wasn't really an issue, there's plenty of room to spread out and nothing gets in the way of my feet, although the middle seat is a little less fortunate as the armrest in front takes up a little more space. space.
It itself was quite comfortable and even has an adjustable headrest. Overall, these chairs are not below average and not exactly what you think of when you hear a budget airline, the individual air nozzles were a welcome bonus and , although the plane is showing its age, it has not. I did a very bad job of settling in. I was a little relieved to not have someone sitting directly next to me, but since this is an aisle seat, the views from the windows were marginal at best. I'm not going to show you too much of this first. flight because I had trouble getting images without drawing too much attention.
One of the reasons I haven't really made any economy films is because filming economy class while respecting the privacy of others is much more difficult than business class. Another reason is that economy class is just simple. boring, there's not too much going on and I know it sounds incredibly privileged but it's the truth anyway, the rest of the amenities included a medium sized table that comes out of the armrest and if you're sitting specifically in this seat you also get a Wi-Fi. -Additional WiFi available on this flight, which I took advantage of thanks to a monthly subscription;
Otherwise, a full flight pass costs between ten and twenty-three dollars, depending on the length of the flight. Data is not limited, but it is limited, although that is hardly noticeable, the inflight entertainment is also offered via Wi-Fi and is free, it simply works as a website that you can access from your laptop or, If you have the Air Canada app on your phone or iPad, the selection isn't as up-to-date as those on the integrated system, but the options are still considerably more plentiful than the WestJet equivalent. Later the refreshment service appeared and thanks once again to my status I got some freebies, which in this case was a gin. and tonic and guacamole and sticks that normally cost $13 or something like that.
I don't know, I wasn't very hungry, so we'll have a proper look at the buy-on-board menu on the second flight, but for now it's the obligatory bathroom trip, at least you guys complain about it again in the comments, it's a Standard Airbus bathroom back here, not much to differentiate it from any other bathroom on these Jets, although the yellow lighting does, but the fares are the age of this particular plane anyway. Here's a bathroom and here's a door that I'm going to go through now and go back to my seat while I'm filming and trying to make some meta commentary.
How do people find things to talk about in economy class? Three minutes have passed. and I have nothing more to say mm-hmm going back to my seat I watched a half decent movie and I didn't really have anything else to do so for the sake of simplicity, let's skip to after we've landed Thank you very much for everything, while I see what it's called, no It is a small airport to hit Namibia on many people's radars. If I get it, okay, I'll keep quiet like the other important ones here in Canada. This terminal is divided into a national international one. and Trent ordered the partition, this also meant I had to head to the other side of the building.
Calgary is also the little-known home of WestJet and with a growing fleet of them, it's easy to find my dream liners here. I was supposed to take this plane to London on its inaugural Vancouver to Gatwick service, but obviously that won't be happening anymore, so we'll have to see what the future holds. Immigration was done with a computer that at the time was more concerned with yes or no. A couple of years ago, cannabis was more than an infectious disease. This airport underwent a sort of renovation in some parts of the terminal and is reminiscent of the Pearson terminal which is not a bad thing by any means and although most large modern airports have a people mover of some sort Calgary those things that are a little more different, attention no, I'm not joking, these things that circulate on exclusive routes are the mass transportation solution of this airport.
Personally, I find it a little funny how over the top the whole infrastructure is for what it is. essentially a golf cart service but I can't make fun of it without admitting that it is probably infinitely cheaper than installing a rail link and this definitely provides long term employment to more people than a rail link, in any case it is a service complete. Polar opposite to the Las Vegas Line 3 subway system at their airport, I didn't end up taking the shuttle or whatever it's called, but instead opted to walk their route laughing like an idiot every time one of these passed by for one of the main stops along the way.
Is the access to the Maple Leaf lounge here on the AC Rouge Economy ticket very similar to regular economy class? It depends on the fare class, the route and the state. This particular space is one of the largest and even has a staffed bar, it is something that is usually reserved for the international lounge, but since there is no dedicated International Maple Leaf lounge at this airport, this The venue has some amenities not otherwise found in domestic or cross-border lounges. However, the bar is different from those in the international lounges, as it does not offer fancy cocktails, but there is an above average buffet with a decent salad station and the typical flatbreads, also during dinner time, such as was the case when I visited, a couple of hot options were also offered.
I ended up settling in with a glass of water with some gin and a plate of red curry chicken. It was soft, but I didn't want to be a jerk, so I ended up finishing it and in one of those office cubicles in the business center there was an Awesome magazine rack and yes, for those of you who are going to ask, you can take these magazines with you. Why else would there be so many? There were no suites with a shower, but the views are pretty good. Okay, time to move on to the next flight.
I continue along the road adjacent to the glorious golf cart highway out the window I run into the plane that will take me to Toronto this thirty-something year old 767 is old to be honest I don't really care much that they are retiring this thing, it's been dragged down by all the new planes and doesn't really make much sense in the current meta. Personally, I don't find it the most attractive plane either, speaking of ugly, look at these seats there were. 50 passengers total on this flight, but Air Canada is very strict with zone boarding, so once again I was able to board at the same time as the only person in the premium cabin making their way through the not-so-bad-looking cabinet where I found my 15k seat, this is again a seat with extra legroom.
I'll show you later how it compares to a normal seat, not that it matters, although you won't fly on this type of plane with Rouge again, however, they are about the same. Seats like those on the A320 and 21 aircraft, so maybe there's still some valuable consumer advice left in this movie, let's take a closer look at the seat itself. Legroom is easily not an issue in this seat with extra legroom. I had plenty of space for my Both knees and feet have the only merit of not having a built-in Ife system as there are no obstacles to hinder the foot space and this is how it compares to a normal seat.
There is still enough space, but not as generous. Additionally, I noticed that the seats in the middle row don't have as much foot room as those on the sides and have two power outlets shared between the three seats. That's true, almost all seats have access toyour own universal plug. you need to keep your devices charged to use the Wi-Fi entertainment system, something that is sadly missing on the

a319

and 20. I'm talking about the power outlets, not the Wi-Fi, the tray table folds down and is Exactly what you'd expect is for the armrest to have a light and a call button, and something that's easily overlooked is this USB charging port here on the front.
I will also mention that the light and my seat didn't work, and there is no individual air. Mouthpieces, the armrests fold flat, but the seat has the same recline as a park bench. The cables go to the small control panel in the armrests. Something was also clearly visible on the seat in front of me, but at least they seem to take cable management seriously. My original seat didn't offer a very good window position so I switched to one that did and one last thing is the really ugly lights. I mean, this is what it looks like without color correction.
Ramshackle is the word I would use to describe how the lighting made the cabin look, but on the plus side, this plane can probably see new life as a cheap horror movie set without much renovation, but luckily with the magic of the science of the color of the law, your eyes do not have to suffer. With this same trauma, it didn't take long for the approximately 50 passengers to settle in, so we very quickly got on our way without being too much. I would like to remind you that, while you put your feet up, if there is no one there. in front of you it's probably okay maybe you don't as the plane hurtles down its runway on frigid nights like tonight with very little humidity to make its way through the hundreds of thousands of lights of a city any city is a beautiful reminder of how much impact we have on an otherwise dark landscape, how we can be individually insignificant but together we make a profound difference maybe I'm being sentimental but I want to make it clear that all our actions right now are making a difference, I may not be able to see that difference from where you are, but rest assured that the people who matter most can return to the flight without much content and let's take a look at the inflight magazine one of the most interesting things for me and I'm sure this is true For many people it is the road map.
Air Canada has, in my personal experience, the most confusing route map aesthetic ever: it looks more like a map of the rail network. more than one for an airline just for nostalgia's sake, this is what the security card looked like. I bet they are selling quite a bit on eBay and we finally have the inflight menu once again, this is the same menu that is available on Regular Air. Flights from Canada on DOS, it's simply called the bistro menu. Air Canada Rouge does not offer free meals on continental economy flights with the exception of Hawaii, so on flights longer than two and a half hours you get these onboard purchasing options.
Oh, and there's this amenity kit. Which is actually good value for money. I opted for the tray meal, which is essentially a business class meal. They are made quite fresh and served hot for about $15 after tax. In my opinion, they are a good deal. I don't make this particular dish. I don't actually remember what it was, whatever it was, the rice was a bit overdone and some pieces were hard to eat, otherwise the chicken wasn't too dry and the sauce was good. After separating the food, I found myself in the bathroom not only to satisfy them. of you with an unhealthy curiosity about airplane bathrooms, but also to satisfy the products of my own intestine.
Paris, this particular installation shows how dated these planes are becoming, the decor is older than me and the fittings, although clean, look like they have In any case, I have seen better days, there was still a functional depot for your waste body and really that's all that matters. Returning to my seat, there wasn't much to see outside because it was a moonless night. I worked a little on my laptop and that's it. especially what happened on this flight Air Canada Rouge is not really a LCC or a low cost airline; it is rather an alibi to provide lower quality service to its passengers and Payne T's non-union cabin crew and pilots less than its main fleet. counterparts, all while breathing new life into these baby boomers of airplanes and while what I said is a bit brutal, the fact is that this is not an airline, in fact it is far from one, there is more legroom in the waiting menu on board and, as passengers, you can enjoy the customer service and amenities of the parent airline and, given your fare class or currency status, those privileges I want to mention that the cabin crew was, as the Attractive, friendly and enthusiastic, the majority of cabin crew in Canada are generally younger.
Crew members serving in the traditional fleet are younger, bringing more energy and spirit. It is very suitable for tourists. It will make up the majority of its passengers. Entertainment options are also clearly above average, but from now on there will only be one A320 design. one will have power outlets at each seat, so make sure your devices are turned on before your flight. On that note, I want to address the fact that Air Canada Rouge just lost a significant portion of its fleet apparently reduced to flying only two A320s and 21s. Another thing to think about is that on route served by scheduled AC and Rouge flights , their prices are usually the same, giving very little reason to choose Rouge over the newer planes in AC's main fleet on the subject of aircraft, while the Airbus fleet is doing well on En In terms of their age, the 767s are really on their last few renovations and modernizations would make very little commercial or financial sense, especially in the current market, so these planes really have no other destination than to sell them as freighters or salvage them for scrap.
As for what the future holds, I don't know, but remember that Air Transat is now owned by Air Canada and with the previous fleet of redesigned A330s and A320s, there will still be hope for a revitalized brand in the leisure sector, when that I arrived. I hope they retain the joy and vitality that the crew brings to the airline. I didn't really have high expectations going into these Rouge flights, but when they depart from their airline, they are definitely more comfortable than the others I've been on and as a budget product it holds up well against the competition, okay that's it. my part this time, thanks for watching, stop sending me pictures of your model airplanes on Instagram and I'll see you next time.
