Night

puppy

, one of the first things people often ask is what was your first night with your puppy like? Assuming it was going to be a disaster. Well, tonight will be our first night with our pup. This is our second episode, but if it's your first time here, let me catch you up. This is our new puppy vlog. Now, as a dog trainer, for over 20 years, I have already raised and trained many dogs. In this series, I'll share with you some tips and tricks I've learned along the way. And I bet you've never heard of many of them. I'm Kayl McCann. This is an eight week old Five Alive mixed breed puppy, welcome back to McCann Dogs. Good Guy. We're about five hours away from bedtime. And in the last episode I talked about the importance of dinner time, any meal time, in fact with your pup.

More Interesting Facts About,

a nighttime puppy training schedule where everyone gets to sleep...

So now it's time for dinner, and I'm going to take advantage of the fact that I have a very hungry puppy and train him. Now, in the last episode I talked about some of the reasons why we use food, but I wanted to go a little deeper into it because this is a huge opportunity that we want to take advantage of. With our puppies. Now, number one is that if you have a busy schedule and you have a lot going on in your teaching life, or you have to stop to feed your puppy anyway, he still needs breakfast, lunch and dinner.

At this point, that's just a great way to structure some workouts automatically. I know every day, right now he

gets

three meals a day. I will probably have at least three short

training

sessions. Oh my God. Training sessions a day, because it's already built in, I gave you a lot of examples in the last episode of things you can do with your puppy during mealtime. But remember, it's really not so much about what you do, but when you do it. And the fact that you take advantage of a puppy means that either you leave, maybe it's not chewing on my sweatshirt.

That's not a good idea. Now, when you do these

training

exercises, you will be able to work on completely new things. Each time you set out to do your training session, or you can repeat some of the things you did earlier in the day, both are really good things to do puppies learn through root dogs. In fact, at any age, we learn through repetition. So if I already started planting a seed about a certain behavior in his brain earlier in the day, it would actually be a great idea for me to revisit it so he has little training bursts throughout the day. .
You will notice that puppies have a very short attention span. They cannot work on the same thing over and over again, they become disconnected, frustrated or distracted. Therefore, it is much better to work for just a few minutes each time they are looking forward to some of their meals or whatever you are working on. So you get the most out of that training session, keeping things very short, sweet and fun. Now, how does dinner time relate to your

nighttime

schedule? Well, a lot of this has to do with when you are going to feed your pup over the next two hours.
I'm going to stop feeding him so he has a few hours to digest his food and have a chance to go. to the bathroom. And later on I'll give you a little preview of how we're going to make that happen a little easier. But for now, I won't necessarily give him all of his food and then put him in the cage and that's it for the night. In fact, I'll give him some of this now and train a little. Could use something in the box. I'm going to make dinner time last longer than 15 seconds. For me it would be necessary.
You have to put it down, leave this and let it eat like this. I can use the food for him by making good decisions a little later. So I'm going to take half of his food here. You are a friend. And I'm just going to play around with some of the exercises that I like to do. When it first arrives. Home, yes. I'm nearing the end of my meal. And we're getting to the point

where

we need to dine ourselves. So when it's time to have dinner with your pup, there are a couple of things you can do around your schedule.
Option number one might be to take the rest of your puppy's food and have him go to his crate, finish his food in his crate, and then let him hang out there. Oh yeah. Good Guy. While you're cooking dinner and doing your stuff and you know, this might be a good option. If you have a busy house or if you are alone, you really can't take care of the puppy and prepare dinner, do everything at the same time, because it is a good time for puppies to make mistakes if you are not watching them. Option number two might be to divide and conquer.
Yes. Good boy. You could have one person, you know, making dinner and the other person could be in charge of the puppy and make sure he doesn't get into mischief. They could continue training with them. And option number three, which is, I think what we could do tonight is a combination of. Both. Yes very beautiful. We are about to sit down to dinner and the puppy came out, Ken played with him a little and trained him a little. We would both like to eat in peace right now. That's true. So the puppy is in his cage.
Now that he finished dinner, the puppy is in his cage and is still

sleep

ing. Then we'll let him

sleep

a little longer. And then the next step is to pick it up and take it outside. So he can go to the bathroom. Now, like them, we have about three hours, I would say until bedtime. So in terms of what happens next with the puppy, well, you have a few options. So option number one might be: if they're sleeping, let them sleep, let them sleep some more. Or if they are thrashing around, take them outside and you can put them back in his box.
If you wanted to know, with his first day home, we are excited and we have done a lot with him today. So having him relaxed in the cage would be completely fine. At this point, you can just sit back and relax if you wish. Now, option two starts with taking the puppy outside, because it's the right thing to do. Yes. Hurry up, hurry up. Because after you have fed your puppy and had some activity, it is a very common time for him to have to go to the bathroom. And if you don't let them out right away, there's a good chance they'll have an accident, especially if he's not yet housetrained.
So my goal today is to set you up for success. So we don't have any accidents. I'm now at the point in the night

where

I really don't want to give him any more food. And now what I want to do is work on things that are a little calmer. I want to show him that at night. We're not going to go crazy or run around the house. We will just be calm. So I have a little bone and I'm going to get one of these dog beds. And if we want to sit down and, you know, a little bit, oh, wow, a little bit, you know, watch TV together.
You could just take a seat with him here and start teaching him how to come, lie down on a bed, and chew on a bone. Now the other reason I really like to do this with my puppies is that I want him to get really comfortable with me when he chews on bones. I want him to learn from the beginning that bones are to be shared, not for him to feel like he has to be possessive of them. And if from a puppy he learns to be calm, to spend time with me and to chew the bone, that is taught to him from the beginning.
This is something we can do together. The other thing you can consider when you have a puppy is to not necessarily let him up on the furniture yet. Now, as your pup

gets

a little older and you have good leadership and a good relationship with him, that's something you and your family could certainly decide between yourself. But since he's new, we'll just stay here on the ground and show him that, you know, down here is a good place to be too. Now, if you watch our channel, you probably know that Ken and I have six other dogs, and you may have noticed that we haven't shown them to you in the videos so far.
So what we would like to do when we get a new puppy is to keep our puppies separate from our other dogs. You know, we are trying to build a bond between us and the puppy. We will also try to make sure he has the opportunity to feel comfortable in a new home that he has never been to. The other dogs also agree, for a very rude awakening. The fact that there's a new little brother in town. So we just want to make sure that when we first introduce it, we do it very gradually. And for now it's important that he has the opportunity to feel comfortable with us.
Now we were really hoping we could stay here quietly, chew a bone, and see Ozark together. But clearly, even after all the exercises that we showed you in the last video today, he still has this abundance of energy. So staying here and being quiet is not really what we are going to do. Let's change gears. And I'm just going to do something active. I have one of our fun, furry ball tugs. It's a fluff and a ball all in one, it's like the most epic toy. And it's Five Alive approved. That is sure. Now when I play shoot with them, there are a couple of little lessons he can learn from this.
Many people are apprehensive about playing tug with their puppies. When they're young, wow, wow. He got control of that thing. But I can actually teach him to be respectful of his mouth and his body when he plays tug, in fact I will take my free hand and put my hands on his body. I could put my hands near his face. As you can see, he may begin to understand that your mouth should stay on the toy. It doesn't come to me, but I want to feel very comfortable with myself holding his body. Now he has Terrier in him, so he likes to pull like crazy.
Yes. And obviously, you'll tailor the play to your specific pup. He's pretty crazy. He likes to play pretty rough, but you can adapt your play to your pup's needs if he wants something a little different and he actually says, yeah, it's fun. If you keep the toy moving, keep it engaged. Then your pup can use that chase impulse. That's really natural. Ah, good boy. And then sometimes in the early stages you can let him win. We're moving on to plan B. I was really hoping that we could sit in bed and chew on our cute little bone and relax, but five doesn't really like that plan.
He's too energetic for that. So it's OK. I just need to, you know, move around it. You know, if you and your puppy do at least half of the exercises that we showed you today, which are in our other video, you know, I won't feel guilty about putting him in his crate and sitting and, you know, watching TV and just relax because you've had a very, very full day. And I guess he's probably too tired by now. So locking him up will be great. Maybe I can get it out. Try again a little later if it's a little more common;
If not, that's fine too. Now don't forget it. Every time you exercise, you will be doing something active with your pup. You should take them outside first, before putting them in the box. We have gone out. We peed a little. We're a little calmer now. Yes. So we'll put them in the box and relax a little bit and give them a little time. With Five Alive sleeping in his cage, Ken and Kayl can rest and relax for a couple of hours. Maybe they could even watch a movie. I've heard Shawshank Redemption is good. It's been a long day, but we still have two things to do, which may be the most important things we do before going to sleep.
We'll close in about 30 minutes before we really try to close things down. First things first, the puppy has been in his crate for a while, so we need to take him outside to avoid accidents. Those other two things I was talking about, the two things we still need to accomplish is we need to make sure that he is, that we've gotten every little drop of gas out of the tank before we put him in his cage for the night. So let's do some exercises, an amazing exercise that we do with all of our puppies. And you will really see the value of this.
You will see how much energy they burn, how much we can reinforce the name or any word we are using. We are going to do something called restricted, remember the other. It is. And the other added benefit of restricted withdrawals is this type of physical activity. If the puppy has to poop, he can sometimes stimulate it. And it could really help your pup poop before bed. Something that is important to remember when working on this is the reward. When your pup gets to the tugboat, that's the part that has to be really fun. Of course, they will love to run and chase.
And you know, the timing of your pitch is also very important, but you have to figure out how to make this part valuable. It will also teach you a lot about your dog. How much do you like toys? What kind of toys do they like? But an exercise like this will burn a lotenergy and you can do it practically anywhere. We can do this in the kitchen, living room or wherever, but it allows you to get every last drop out of the tank. As I mentioned before. Hopefully we have a puppy that sleeps through the night.
Look, I told you a little exercise. He makes you poop, which means we can go to bed less stressed. So for the first few nights, sometimes even the first few weeks, depending on how comfortable he is with this, we have our new puppies sleep in his crate, but in our room. And to make sure that I am, he can be around me, he feels a little bit more comfortable. I can also hear it moving at night. In fact, we lift the box and place it where we can see it. Now I didn't have enough space on my nightstand, so you could put it there.
So we just have a little bit to raise it. He's on the same level, so we can see him and his boxes will go up here. And this is where he will sleep for the next while. And eventually we will transfer it to the ground. And then eventually, when he's older and more trustworthy and knows the house rules, you know, he could sleep, not in a cage. But we are far. We are very far from that. Now in his box there are some bones to chew on. There are some things. And you'll notice that we have a little blanket here.
Now, if you've seen any of our other crate training videos, you've probably heard that we don't recommend putting blankets, bedding, stuffed animals, or anything like that in your puppy's crate. Because many times your puppies may go to the bathroom on it and then squish it to the side. And then you have some housetraining problems, or a lot of puppies will try to eat it. Now he is used to sleeping on a bed inside his cage with bedding. So since that sounds familiar to him, we'll start with some bedding in his cage and see if he's okay with it during the night.
If he has an accident, or if he tries to eat it or something, obviously we'll take it away because I don't want him, you know, to get hurt. But let's start with that. So sometimes it depends on the puppy and you need to make sure you choose the right thing for your dad. If they have a habit of chewing on something, then you can consider taking it away. Or if they have accidents in his crate, take it out because he will find that sometimes that will just fix it. Well. What do you think Mr. Bedtime for Bonzo?
Puppy hugs are the best thing in the world. Could you be cuter? In fact, now he's starting to get tired. I really like the look of this good boy. Well. It's bedtime. I love you a lot. You are my favorite puppy. Don't tell BeeLine. So I'm going to turn the box around like this so he's facing me when he sleeps and he starts to fuss a little. I can stick my fingers in the box and try to calm him down a little. If he really makes enough noise, I think he has to go to the bathroom.
For the first two nights, I will get up and take him outside. You know, if he's not used to holding his bladder all night. So I need to be aware of that. And then as time goes on, we'll be able to figure it out a little bit more. And we have a lot of videos on crate training and all that specifically. But for tonight I can feel comfortable putting him in the cage. He's exercised, he's gone to the bathroom. We are ready to go. And now let's cross our fingers that we can make it through the night.
And I'll have to inform you in the morning. After a long day of puppy training, Kayl enjoyed some well-deserved sleep. Remember that in the break there is renewal and tomorrow we are going to do all this again. Guess what. Did he sleep all night? I think he might be the luckiest puppy owner in the world. Also, he looks, I don't know if he can see in there or not, but he just says: Hello, good morning. He is just the cutest thing. Although he is awake now. That means I have to get out of bed and get him out.
