7 EDC Hacks That Will Change How You Carry

May 19, 2024
In the words of survivor and Bushcraft legend Mor Kensky, the more you know, the less you have to

carry

and the less you know, the more you have to

carry

, so here are our five EDC tricks that

will

help you carry less and practically turn you into mcgyver, let's do the damn thing, so the first trick comes from a good friend of mine, Bushcraft Kelo, this is his hands free mod, it works great with AA and AAA flashlights like this i5t EOS. I also have a couple of others like the 47s preon. an i3t or a Streamlight U this is the protac basically any smaller flashlight like this with a tail switch works great can work with other flashlights could also work with something that's like a rectangular flashlight as long as you don't interfere with the button if it has a side switch or something, but let me show you how it works, it's very very simple, all you need is some pull cord or bungee cord and some heat shrink and Kelso sells this as a kit, not with the light but a little bit of heat shrink and a little bit of drawstring, he wears orange drawstring so it's high visibility but I couldn't find that I can only find some black real quick for example here so you might as well throw in a small luminous walnut bead.

This is for visibility, so all you need to do is get some heat shrink that fits the diameter of the flashlight. This is a little too big for that head, but I want it to fit snugly so you can put it on. Alright, so cut a piece of heat shrink that is long enough so that it doesn't cover your threads. It really doesn't have to be that long if you don't want it to be and then you would take a piece of this elastic cord run it through there and then since I don't have orange elastic, I have black.

If you need visibility, you don't want to lose your flashlight, you can throw something like this glow nut bead in there and tie the IND of your trigger wire right here Slide the bead out of the way and then hit the heat shrink with a heat gun. It's probably best to take out the battery first, once it has cooled, put the battery back in and you are left with a hands free flashlight, so you turn it on and you can continue working with your hands and point it at it without having to hold the flashlight, you can put it anywhere and with one like this you can still put this on the brim of your hat if you need to but it's just a nice way to add some functionality to your flashlight, it also makes it easy to clip it to things so There you have it, that's tip number one, trick number two, it's something I've sworn by for a long time.

I don't carry one but two wallets if you watched my backpack video recently where I suggested things you should carry in your backpack a wallet is one of those things that I have a primary wallet and a secondary wallet and here's why this has nothing to do with things like a dummy wallet for fear of getting mugged or something, where you give a potential mugger an empty wallet or some fake stuff in a wallet, this has nothing to do with this being my main wallet with all the cards which I use regularly. credit cards debit cards license insurance things like that that I need with me all the time and then there are tons of other cards, especially for multiple business and things cards that I have to have but don't want to have with me at all times, so credit cards membership Other credit cards that I don't really use much I put in a second wallet, so I keep this in my backpack.

I have a small Lockpick. Behind it is a notebook and then in front of it are a bunch of other cards. credit cards membership cards things of that nature I don't want a regular wallet so I have a slim wallet in my pocket and then everything else I need in this one that usually stays in my backpack but I can also go in my truck if No I'm going to carry my backpack with me, so two purses are more useful than you think. The next trick is very, very simple as everyone should know it and is one of the reasons why you don't really need a compass as long as you have one. analog wrist watch let me show you that most digital watches have built-in compasses, but if you are lost in the forest or somewhere you need to know from north to south and you have an analog watch and you are in the northern hemisphere, it is very simple. just point the hour hand at the sun which is just over my right shoulder here, if you have it pointing at the sun take it halfway between the hour hand and its 12:00 position which is at this point just a little. past one and that's South, so straight in this direction is South, so if I take this little Compass button, we can try this, give it a second to orient it, look it's in about the same position as the 1:00 here, which is South, so like I said before, I said if you were in the northern hemisphere, this shows us the south.
If you're in the southern hemisphere, this would show you the position of North, so just flip it depending on where you are in relation to the equator, but there you have it Compass built into your analog watch and again, it's not perfect, it's not accurate just because at different times of the year the sun

will

be in different places, but it is good enough to let you know that from north to south you orient yourself and go in the direction you want. I need to get in so the next hack is actually just a product, it's Ranger Bands and I'm going to include it as a hack because I don't think people use it enough, myself included, they're really awesome, they have a million different uses.
Cases like zip ties and adhesive tape. The Ranger bands are awesome so they come from my friends at wazu and you can see a lot of the uses here on this card but you don't have to buy them you can buy them if not. you want to make them yourself, but you can make them with an old bicycle inner tube, just cut it out and that's a ranger band, that's how it all started, but if you want different sizes, diameters, lengths and widths, you can buy this combo pack in wazu, but here are just three examples of what you can do with a bandit of rangers, so I showed you in my tall survival tin that I had a bandit from uh Grim survival around mine and I added extra equipment to it, you can also use a forester band and hold something like a glow card to the back of your Altoids can and then if you need to remove this just remove the entire Ranger band, it will keep it closed.
Amazing Ranger Band, might as well do exactly the same thing. I just showed you with a heat shrink with a ranger band around a flashlight. This is better if you need access like charging or say a side switch or something like that. You can put it on and take it off so it's not so permanent. heat shrink but it's also not as stable but I mean it works just as well and lastly here's another example of what looks a lot like Bushcraft and the survivalists use it because you have a little bit lighter underneath this. I have about a foot of duct tape I have 7 or eight feet of candle wick and then I have the ranger bands wrapped around it, so in this case the ranger band not only holds the wick tightly and prevents to uncoil, but it is also a fire starter, the wick is a fire. starter and so is duct tape so pretty much everything here is double or triple duty uh and the ranger bands just hold everything together so it's really cool and let me show you real quick so yeah really You need it, ranger.
The band can also be your fire starter, so I don't always use a neck knife; In fact, I rarely use it, but if I'm camping, hiking, I'll have something a little more accessible like a neck knife and that's it. Well, fine, but I want to show you an interesting little trick I learned recently. It works with most, but not all, neck knives, but you can take off the standard lanyard and grab something like this here, this is the wazu. Viking Spark, you could use just the spark or just the Viking Wet Stone and now they have this new locking mechanism that can easily fit through the holes.
I also have a ranger band here to keep everything tight slide this down and then go around your neck now I cut this a little shorter because I set this up before I knew you could do this so I would probably start with a cord a little longer, but works very, very well. Mine is too close to the neck. for Comfort, but that's a really cool trick, you're getting a lot out of such a small package. I'm going to end this video with two tricks for Knipex pliers, uh, because I think they're awesome and obviously very, very popular right now, but if you carry a multitool, what are the two things that you use the most in the multitool?
Chances are if I had to guess pliers and a screwdriver or a Phil Flathead, whatever, if you're carrying just a blade, you're missing out on some of those other important tools. tools mainly that driver, but if you have a lean ratchet driver or something like 7-Eleven L, what you can do is grab your Cobra pliers, it works best with these 5 inch Cobra pliers, it works with some of the others, but these they work The best thing is that if you open it that much, let it snap into place and you will notice that that hole is big enough for this.
Here it holds your flat nose adapter or your Le and Ratchet dri and you have a wrench with your Cobra Pliers that you can have if you mainly use just the screwdriver and the pliers, you can have the same utility with just this, it's cool, right? I think it's amazing. The next trick has to do with the smaller Cobra pliers these are. a 4 in so 5 in 4 in you can see a big difference here it doesn't have grips that is one of the things I dislike the most about these little ones it also doesn't have a button which I would like it to have but hey, you go smaller I'm going to have to do some sacrifices.
One thing you can do is go to Lowe's and buy Plasti Dip and dip them in Plasti Dip and glue the handles yourself or you can just use some heat shrink. I do not do it. I really like this yellow and green color, but it's what I have right now, so you can slide them in here and you want to crop it before you shrink it, so mark where you want it to be. I want it to be right above the end. the handle so right there on this one we'll do it right there grab your heat gun and now you've got some grips for your Cobra pliers obviously it would look better with a black or different color but easy grips for your Cobra pliers . and now it's easier to keep them, so that's it, these are some really awesome EDC tricks that maybe you didn't know about, let me know what you think about it in the comments below, but also if you have any tricks to share and let me know If you want to see another video like this in the future.
Anything I talked about in this video that you might find interesting will be linked in the description below, but that's it. I'll see you in the next video and until then. go on, can you take me?
