One thing is the Land Rover's infotainment system. What works better than Volvo's is the smartphone mirroring systems so if you use Apple Carplay or Android Auto you plug it in and the top screen becomes completely Apple Carplay which is great, they are all big icons and it's just for that but in the Volvo you only have a small segment of the screen that is used for your phone and that's a bit annoying, you would especially prefer if you are using Google Maps or ways you would prefer to see everything on the full screen . What about the space in the front? Well, just like the X and 40 Tour, drivers will have no problem getting comfortable. You've got a lot of headroom, you've got a lot of legroom and the storage in the front is very impressive in the Evoque as well, so you've got good sized door bins and then in the center console you've got this sort of two mini armrests that can be folded individually here, a very good size storage compartment with two USBs. It has ports for a micro SIM and a 12-volt socket that consciously opens from above or from below, but it doesn't really matter.
Right in front you have this little tray for your smartphone and it has a non-slip floor. Well, that means that whatever you put in there won't slide if you go around some corners. The thing about this is that you can remove it completely and underneath you have two cup holders, that's pretty useful, but this is not that useful, where are you going to put this? The storage net behind the driver's seat also has plenty of foot room under the driver's seat, although there was a hard plastic lip at the base of that seat. It has a nice ventilated feel. well knurled like you're getting the front ones too, you also get a USB C port unlike the 12 volt shocker you get on the Evoque, but there are no real special storage compartments for people in the back like on the Evoque.
Additionally, and if you pull it down, you can see that you have two cup holders or an armrest and below this you can also reveal a ski hatch. It is now easier to get in and out of the XC 40 in the rear because it has a larger opening and also in the Evoque it is easier to trap your foot under the rear seats, but when you are in the space offered it is very good, So you can easily seat an adult behind another adult and you will certainly be comfortable on long trips. However, the X 40 is larger, so if you want to carry tall adults in the back regularly, the 40 will actually work better.
So what else do you need to know about the rear of the Evoque? Well, you have a pocket behind the driver's seat. You also get a decent amount of space for your feet under the driver's seat here. You've got a twelve volt socket down here which, annoyingly, doesn't open from the bottom, but it's like the one on the front from the top, you've also got an Evoque nameplate here which looks good and is a useful reminder if you forget which car you are sitting. These air vents also feel quite sturdy but you don't get a storage compartment for the rear passengers which isn't so great, this hump in the floor is bigger than on the XC 42 and if you lower it you get two cup holders or an armrest, so which one has the more practical trunk, I'll tell you.
Right off the bat, it's the Volvo X and 40, but let's look at it in a little more detail, so the reason the Volvo which we definitely recommend adding. or if you have it, you get something called a flexible boot floor, which basically means you can lift it up, fold it in half and leave it like that to act as a sort of barrier, so if you have some loose shopping bags, You can put them in the front there and they won't all fly away if you go around the corner. There is also a very good amount of storage under the floor, so again, if you look down, you don't just have this layer under the top. floor, but underneath you have a spare wheel here, but if you don't have a spare wheel, then you get all the extra space that that brings; you also get these pretty sturdy hooks that you can attach things to on the side and you get a handy ski hatch on the back and with the convenience package you also get these plastic hangers on there, so a very impressive boot if we move on to the Evoque, which again is still a practical boot and you can see it's a good size but when we did the carry-on test we managed to fit one more extra suitcase in the back of the X and 40 and in fact if you take out the spare wheel or If you choose a car that doesn't have a spare wheel then you can fit two extra suitcases in total in the XC 40 instead of the Evoque, but you still get a useful amount of underfloor storage (you can see here).
You also get equally sturdy hooks that you can attach things to and you get the flappy. thing for the loose bits of paper in the back if that's what you want and you'll see that in the Evoque you also have 40/20/40 split folding rear seats which means you can lower the middle seat all the way and then have that extra space. to store long items in the these handy remote buttons to put the rear seats down where they are in the Evoque, you have to do it manually, so again it's a practical advantage in the XC 40, but overall, although the Evoque is impressive, is the XC 40 the family SUV Really practical here on the road, the Evoque is.
It's not fast, it's about a second slower than the XC 40 from zero to 60 miles per hour and you can really tell when you're at highway speeds. HeCruise is fine but getting there can be a bit of a hassle especially if you have a car fully loaded with passengers and luggage, neither of these cars are particularly brilliant at getting around the roads and really if that's what you want it to do your family SUV, then you'd be better off with an Audi q3 or a BMW x1. The cars are better drivers in this class and these two simply have quite a bit of body roll in fast corners and neither of them have particularly brilliant steering.
The steering in the X 240 just feels quite artificial and in the Evoque it has quite aggressive self-control. focus on it so that it makes you feel less connected to the front wheels, especially when cornering, so although neither car handles nimbly, they are still safe and easy to drive, the gearbox is also not particularly impressive in The Evoque when you're just driving down the motorway is fine, you barely notice it shifting, but if you want a quick burst of acceleration there's a really serious delay between you hitting the accelerator hard and then anything happens except the gearbox of the XC forty.
It's not perfect either, in fact it suffers from pretty much the same problems that evoke them, so again, on a motorway cruise it's fine, it won't bother you, but if you want great pace it will feel quite slow. and it will take time to react. These are two of the most comfortable SUVs in this price range, but while they both offer impressive ride comfort, they do so in different ways. The XC 40 flows into its suspension. Bump edges are a little better than those evoked when you're cruising around town, but you do have to put up with a more consistent side-to-side roll than in the Evoque, which still rocks your head smoothly from left to right, but with less frequency.
Both cars ride smoothly and serenely on the motorway with their standard-sized wheels, although it's worth noting that the Evoque does get a little jittery if you upgrade to optional 20-inch alloys, but the Evoque is the much quieter car, so I'm not sure you'll be able to notice it through this, but you'll certainly be able to notice it from the driver's seat, but driving the x40 down the highway just after you've gotten into the Evoque is a lot louder here, so in all areas there really is much more road. noise that seems to be a little more wind noise, and the engine is more noticeable, so this engine may be faster, but you hear it and that is a big compromise that you have to pay because really the Evoque is overall more relaxing and its interior is a sound deadening seems to be much more effective and it really is just calm, relaxing and quiet; compared to this exit 14 both cars can go off road but the Evoque is much better if you want to do a bright green lane if we are just going to drive from camp to camp then both cars are fine.
Well, we're testing a relatively base-spec Evoque versus a relatively high-spec XC 40, but still, the Evoque is the slightly more expensive car, but the Evoque will hold up. It's incredibly good value and the running cost should be cheaper than the XC 40, meaning it's actually cheaper to buy and run for three years if you buy it outright.
