10 Thrifted and Trash To Treasure Furniture Makeovers | Episode 2

May 30, 2021
Hello friends and welcome back to Desert DIY if you are new here my name is Cory this is the second

episode

I am doing of my 10 flip/junk second hand

furniture

projects to

treasure

pretty much all the things I love to make. I'm starting to create these videos where I compile 10 projects of mine together and that way when people are new to my channel they can check out my previous projects or if they've been watching my channel for a while they might have missed one .

episode

or a project that I did in the past and I just wanted to put them all together and compile them into some videos of 10 projects each and let me know what you think about it in the comments below, but for this first project.

I just had this cute little nightstand that I got for free, someone was giving it away and I thought it would be fun to give it a cute little makeover. I'm currently redecorating my daughter's room with a princess theme so this is in there but I just painted it gray and then painted the knob silver and it gave it this glamorous look that is perfect for her room. Now project number two. Sorry this video was at night for this part of the video so it's not very good. quality video right here at the beginning so keep going it will get better but I started with a dark brown gel stain and then I'm going to go over it with a white lime wash polish and this gel stain that I use takes a long time to dry and, of course, all these videos.

I have the longer videos linked in the description box, so if you have any questions about any of the processes I do during some of these projects, go to the description box and click. In the link I will have them all numbered so you know which project number goes to which link. That way you can see the detailed process where I explain how I did all these things in this video. This lime wash is like one of my favorite products to use because of the way I use it on so many different things and I think it's really versatile and can do so many different types of looks and project like a lot of my projects.

I was just improvising and wanted to try. a different finish I was doing as I went and it turned out really well, which I'm glad because it took me quite a while. If any of you have worked with gel shortly before, you will know that gel stain is very time-consuming. long time to dry, okay, so I didn't show the part where I painted the bottom half because I already showed myself painting the other piece of

furniture

with that same gray, so now I'm just going to go over it with dark wax. and this product offers a really nice finish but not very durable and I found that after doing this project also if I could go back and change something about this project I would have sanded the top of this piece so the paint would have been a little stronger there.
10 thrifted and trash to treasure furniture makeovers episode 2
I think maybe that would have helped this finishing wax. Oh better, I don't know, but it didn't seal very well and there were some chips in the paint, so that's it. It is necessary to recover it with a water-based polyurethane. Sorry it took me a minute to remember, but it was still very beautiful. The finish itself looked very clean and I will definitely repeat a process similar to this in the future, but I will. I'll give you a close-up in just a second. Oh, and of course, I spray painted the same knob color and everything I did in the first project I did in silver again and I was up and running with this look, but look at that.
The result is not so great. I literally made it up as I was going and it turned out beautiful and I was super happy with the finished product here and also number three was something I got for free. My mom said it, I'm not sure, I think maybe it was something she had in the 2000s when everyone had the same dining room set, but I'm not really sure if that's what it is or not, but from It was on his back anyway. The patio had been damaged just from being there and I gave it a face lift and it was super simple and easy and you'll see I literally cleaned it, spray painted it, put a new seat on it and it looked amazing and beautiful but this gray color what I'm using is just, I think it's called granite gray and I use this spray paint for a lot of different projects.
Rust-oleum a Times coverage spray paint is my go-to, it really covers incredibly well now for the seat. Partly I just had these foam squares that I bought, I think in a pack of five, at Walmart and then attached them with some spray glue made by Loctite, although there are other brands that work just as well and you can find them too this at Walmart, the reason I spray glue on the padding is because when you cover it with fabric you don't want the padding to slide and move. This fabric was from Hobby Lobby, was $8.99, very sturdy good quality fabric, as is usually the case.
They are very expensive and come in those big long rolls, but this one was on clearance. Always check the clearance section before you check the regular section because sometimes you can find exactly what you need in there, so all I'm going to do now is just put them back. Reattach the seat with the same screws it came with and you're good to go. I swear anyone could do this and all I used was a T-50 staple gun to hold the fabric down, that's the type of staple I will always use, although someday in the future I will have an electric stapler because my nails hurt so much. hands with that gun.
I have carpal tunnel, but today, what do you think of this fabric? I love this fabric. I actually sold that bench, okay, number four, I got this one for free like Well, I posted this article in a Facebook group saying: Is anyone throwing away a dining room table because I wanted to turn a dining room table into my coffee table for my house? And if you watch my channel, you'll know that I'm constantly changing things up. my house and if you are new to my channel let me tell you don't get used to anything because I am constantly changing my furniture and decor and every once in a while you see a video where something looks totally different like later in this video. my dining room is an old video of my dining room and it's moving a lot.
I don't have my dining room in that room anymore, but for this table I just sanded it down and cut the legs shorter because it's obviously going to be a coffee table and you just make sure to cut each leg exactly the same length so that way it doesn't wobble the table and then you put the legs back on and this table was so heavy it was ridiculous but I used my paint sprayer many of you were asking about this paint sprayer. This paint sprayer is really cheap from Harbor Freight. I think it cost less than $20.
The thing about this paint sprayer is that you have to clean it really well after each use. otherwise it will clog up and stop working, but the good thing is that it's super cheap, so if you ever forget to clean it, it's like you're busy and forget to clean it, which I've obviously done before, that's why I know it's super cheap to replace so you won't feel as bad as if you forgot to clean a hundred dollar paint sprayer. Look, this room was like it wasn't my same room anymore. I don't have those sofas anymore. I changed my rug and I don't use this coffee table anymore, which is really funny seeing this number five, this piece is old and it was funny because I posted this YouTube video and I got a message from my niece who was all grown up.
It's strange to say that my niece you think like a child, no she's an adult but she messaged me right away and she was moving into her first real house and her fiancé or boyfriend, I'm not sure if they've gone through that stage yet , but if. they moved in together and she wanted to make sure the house was really nice because when he came home he was deployed at the time so he wanted this sign for his house and she offered me $20 for it and I took it but this finish What I did here was like a faux wood finish.
I got the shutter, I think from a pile of scrap metal on garbage day, and all I did was apply light coats of this brown paint that I make so that the paint I had at home on the shelf at the time and made sure to Finish each shutter piece with a simple, straight brush stroke from top to bottom at the end so the lines looked like wood grain. I don't know if that makes sense to you, but that's how I created this faux wood look. I actually made this piece for a Less with yummy appearance from the Latino next door and that's a really fun challenge that she does every month she hosts and what you do is find something high end and I made a cheaper version, So I was inspired by a sign in Kirkland.
I think it was like $60, something crazy like that and I ended up making this first one super cheap, under 20 bucks or around I'm pretty sure. It was a $20 reduction but all I had to buy was the greenery and the letters, everything else I already had or got for free, this greenery was on clearance after Christmas. I highly recommend purchasing your flowers right when they are on clearance for after the holidays because the Christmas stuff in general can be reused for many different times of the year, like you can use them for spring summer, all that good stuff.
I'm going to go ahead and fast-forward through this pasting part because it's pretty self-explanatory. You literally just stick the leaves on the shutters and the stems too and hot glue is your best friend for projects like this. Here is the finished product. I hope you really like this one because I'm sure I made project number six, although I can't believe it. We already have six, so this is a very old video and I think in this video I was pregnant with my son and he's 10 months now, but this canvas had Sharpie all over it and I couldn't get it off.
I tried, it was a really nice painting and it was obviously something painted in Arizona, which is where I'm from and I love Arizona, but I couldn't save it, so instead of saving the painting that's on the canvas, I decided to just save the canvas, so I painted it with Waverly black chalk paint and it's not chalkboard paint although you can use black chalk paint as chalkboard paint it works so I painted it all black and then I took this tape and I got clearance for a 50 bucks , so here we are, the project only cost me 50 dollars and I tied it around the canvas and made a cute bow.
I'm no bun expert, but I did a good job on this one. I guess I'm just a little proud of myself and I'm also super obsessed with Buffalo Check, so this is something that was perfect for my home decor, although I ended up selling it on a lot of these projects that I do here and decorate in my home. with it for a while and then I get tired of it and sell it, but now I'm just going to look at some feeds on Pinterest and find something that catches my eye and that I feel like looks pretty and I'm just going to look at it.
I drew it on this canvas and used a chalk pen, it's like a pastel texture, it's very soft, I don't know how to explain it but I just looked at how they did it on Pinterest in a picture and then freehand. I drew it and if you're interested in doing freehand calligraphy like this, you should definitely go back and watch this video because I explain it in a lot more detail in the video so you can see how I did it. It was actually very easy and you have normal bad handwriting so if you have bad handwriting there is still hope for you but now I'm going to go back and complete the calligraphy style part and the nice thing about using a chalk pen is that if you If you make a mistake, you can just take like a Q-tip, wet it, and wipe off the area of chalk that you know went outside the lines or didn't look right or whatever, and if you mess it up, then you can just erase it. all or if you do it with paint you can always paint over it but that would be a little more difficult so sorry for the poor quality of the camera these are old videos and I was using my old phone and it had the best camera ever You know, I got into YouTube a lot at the time, so I didn't have the best camera.
Well, this project will be. You know, I didn't even put the number on this one, the number seven. I think so for project number. seven, this was a total

trash

project to hoard. I literally took

trash

and turned it into something that was really cute, so I had cardboard and a bunch of paper bags on hand and I really wanted to find some crafts that I could do without. paper bags because I feel like that texture and color can be really pleasing to the eye. I don't know why I really like that natural brown color, so I cut a bunch of leaves and made them into a wreath. that old piece of cardboard that I cut the circle out of, if you've already seen this video you already know what I'm talking about, if you haven't seen this video yet you might say: well I'm going to try that because We're all in a situation where this time where we just have to use what we have to be crafty and for the artistic type of people like me, they just like to create things, there's only a need and if you're not creating them.
I'm stressed and sad, well at least that's how it is for me. I have to do things. I don't know what it is or why, I don't know, but I have to do things. It's part of who I am. If you have paper bags and a piece of cardboard or even cardstock and a large piece of cardboard, I know you are shopping on Amazon right now, so I'm pretty sure you have a lot of boxes in your houses and could easily do this project. You can do it. in any sizeyou can do it in different shapes you can do it with different colored pieces of paper you can even paint your paper bag first before putting it all in cut it all out and put it all in your wreath shape there are so many different ways you can make this your own and that's something that is What's important to me is that you understand that you don't have to do things exactly how I do them in my video.
I'm just trying to give you a little inspiration, even if you just watch part of this video and think, Oh, I'm going to do something like that. It doesn't have to look anything like my final product, as long as you find something you like, go, create and be happy. that's the most important thing this is how mine turned out if you liked it let me know in the comments section below oh do you know what number seven is God apparently I can't count myself but I gave you more projects than I thought so number seven apparently is this ladder rack and it was so cheap only three dollars.
I was very lucky to find this at the thrift store and of course remember that all of these projects were previously purchased before this virus situation occurred so there is no need to worry and so did I. I'm showing here that I infected this piece. I used a product called Microban that actually kills bacteria up to 24 hours after using it, which I think is really interesting and something interesting that you guys might want to try is something that I What I've been doing is every time I have to go to the supermarket or any type of store in general, I have been spraying myself and my clothes with the germ and that way, if I am exposed to that virus while I'm out, I don't survive on my clothes or my skin or anything that is exposed.
It is a substance with a strong odor. It smells a lot like orange and citrus, but I'm not sure if it's good for you to breathe in, but it's a little less scary. than getting this virus so that's what I do if you're not doing it that's cool too but I thought maybe some of you might be interested in hearing about it so this color is actually the same color I painted my fireplace in my house and I really like it. I use it in many things. It's pretty much the same color as the stain I used on the lower kitchen cabinets too and here it is.
I set it all up nice just for the video, but now. He's actually in my daughter's room holding all of her books. I tell you I'm changing everything all the time now I'm breaking out this little window I made recently and I feel like I spent like five or ten dollars at an antique mall I know I bought it at an antique mall for sure but I had this old hardware and took it all off and made sure to be very careful not to break up the wood too much and then I go ahead and ship it. down with my orbital sander, this is also from Harbor Freight, another thing you can get super cheap, you don't need a lot of money for certain power tools like orbital sanders or paint sprayers, this mirror mirror spray that I used first is actually a little expensive, it's like twelve dollars a can, so I recommend that when you have the opportunity, when we can go shopping again, you buy it with a coupon at Michael's with a 40% off coupon, so I already have the part of the flipped mirror.
I put it back on and just use a razor blade to clean up the paint and it actually works great, it works a lot quicker and easier than taping which is something I don't like to do and I feel like paint tape It's a waste of money and time, so I rarely use paint tape on anything, not even painting inside my house. I just use the brush to make a perfect line or I kept painting things like this. I use a razor blade to clean off the excess paint which I understand, but here is the final product.
The mirror finish was not perfect. I had to make do with what I had due to the situation we are in now, so the silver paint on the back was a little blurry, as it could have been. I used a couple more coats of that number nine mirror finish. This is one of my favorite projects I've ever done. I bought this little toy kitchen at a garage sale. The woman I bought it from said that her dad built it and that she played with that ton when I was a kid and as you can see it definitely shows that it was well laid out and that's totally fine.
I feel like we should let our kids play with their toys, we should let them use them and hit them. you know, it leaves its mark on them and that's totally fine and in this case it's really cool because you can have that history and those memories in the piece, but it doesn't work and I needed to fix some things, so luckily all the pieces. They were still there and I was able to put these drawers back together. His father had built them very well and had tried to repair them several times. I think it's a really beautiful story when you see that they even tried to repair them. over and over again that shows how much they love the piece and how much they used it, and they even took the time to fix it over and over again so it could still be used and played with, but I glued it on using my handy nail gun and I'll put it back together now.
I'm just going to use my caulking gun with some regular white caulk to mimic a wood filler. I didn't have enough wood putty for this, so again I used what I had. I had caulking so I used that to fill in the cracks and just to give the wood finish on the front a smoother feel. It was really broken so I had to do what I could and now I'm going to just paint it with its first coat of chalk paint. I just bought the usual cheap chalk paint from Home Depot. I painted the first coat of chalk paint when I was inside the house.
The chalk paint was very adherent. I guess it sticks to everything. so it's good to start with chalk paint, then I used painter's tape for this. Here's why I use spray paint. You can't really get a perfect edge with spray paint unless you use tape, so this is a good time to use painter's tape. That's pretty much the only time you use painter's tape, but now I'm going to replicate my kitchen and paint the top half white and the bottom half the same gray as my cabinets, my fireplace, my bookshelf, and then I spray painted it. the knobs, just like I did at the beginning of the video, I made them silver and now I'm just going to pre-drill some holes and glue some hooks on the sides so my kids can hang their little kitchen accessories on there like they were. excited to wear this piece they were right behind the camera waiting saying Is it done yet?
It is done? It is done? They actually use playdough and pretend they are having baking competitions and creating cake decorations outside of the game. Doh, that's their favorite thing to do right now, all thanks to that show on Netflix called Nailed. They're really into that and in the original video you can see how I made that lemon sign right there. I used fabric and a canvas that was imperfect. I had a small hole and I recreated something useful. Okay, if you've made it this far into the video for the latest project number 10, I just want to say thank you so much for sticking with me.
I know sometimes it's really hard to have time to watch a whole video it's like sitting down to watch the video skipping the ads because I'm pretty sure a lot of you were skipping the gist which is fine. I do the same thing, don't worry, but this project was the most recent. and it was super simple and I really enjoyed creating something that was really colorful. You'll see this piece is super colorful when I'm done with it and the first thing I did was of course clean it and take it to I guess it's the bones and tighten all the screws and now I'm just going to give it a little bit of color like I said this one piece is super colorful and I was very happy to do it, it's something I needed, you know, it's kind of In these monotonous times right now we can't go and do the things we want to do, we can't see each other, hug each other and hang out with our loved ones and friends, so I needed something to cheer me up and I had all the supplies to create. something super colorful reminds me of something that would be outdoors like on a patio and the colors also remind me of I don't know like a parrot or some kind of beautiful bird.
It doesn't sound strange, but it does remind me. like some kind of cool tropical bird, for some reason I don't know, let me know in the comments if you agree that it has a kind of tropical bird quality. My grandmother used to collect tropical bird things like canned things and parents and stuff like that she was really into Florida for a while so this is like a blast from the past this color scheme I'm doing is something my grandmother liked. He would have loved it a long time ago, he even painted a mural of a beach. scene like a Florida beach scene in her room and we live in Arizona so it was really cool that she did that but here it is and thank you so much for watching guys and I'm so happy to have you.
I have a lot of new friends here on my channel and I hope you enjoy my new content and stay and thank you very much for subscribing and see you in the next one, bye guys.
