3 Totally Wrecked Trash To Treasure Makeovers

Mar 07, 2024
You won't want to miss today's video in today's episode. We're doing three total Trash to Treasure

makeovers

and I mean, seriously,

trash

. I got them for free. They were literally going to go into the

trash

on the sidewalk. found for free on Facebook Marketplace and something we created from scraps literally Trash to Treasure and you won't even recognize this one when it's finished but this board here we got for free on Facebook Marketplace and I'm actually I'm going to fix it using some leftovers I had from the previous project and I will use it as a display at my booth where I resell my items and then the last thing is something that you have been asking me for, you have seen it in some of my videos, this is how we made our bulletin board DIY Little China Plate Holder Beads.

I don't even know what you'd call this, but you've been asking, so we'll show you how we did it. I like to start. with the biggest piece first, so let's start with this hut that came off someone's front porch and was pretty damaged and very dirty and I've been calling it The Franken Hutch because it doesn't make sense how it was made, some of the things that are here were original and it looks like some of them are something taken from a different piece of furniture and put there and as you can see someone did the DIY special here which is fine I understand if you don't have what you need to do it the right way, so you have to do what you have to do, but I don't think these doors are original to the piece, I think they come from something else and you can tell because there's like there's a completely different colored wood there, I don't know , I really don't even know what's going on here because it's actually supposed to be a piece of mahogany, but still there are random areas that were colored completely different, made of different wood and then the glass doors look so weird that the original hinges They are no longer there.

They added some kind of weird gel dye to the inside to give it more of a brown color instead of red, but the hinges are now on the outside of the piece. I do not understand that. is going on here with this piece why would they replace the hinges unless these are not the original doors, but what are the chances that there are non-original doors that fit this cabinet exactly? I don't know, I'm very strange. Because of how this piece was made, none of it makes sense, but what I do know is that one thing is for sure: I'm going to remove all the doors from this, so since it has these weird Frankenstein-like constructions, I think it would be a really good candidate for one painting and two to remove all the doors and leave them as open shelves.

I feel like lately I've been doing renovations on furniture, kind of like people have been doing renovations on houses they want to open. concept, so I'm doing an open concept on a lot of my hutches that we've been renovating, so my husband had to step in and remove the hinges because the metal that the flat head screws were made of was peeling and it wouldn't bother me. he let the screw come out, so he had to go in. He has very strong hands, so he went in and took it out for me and he's also going to take out all the little pieces of the doorstop that were in here and he has a really cool way of using his super smart engineer type brain to get these things out. .

I would get really frustrated and give up so I'm really grateful that you help me and if you're new to my channel, my husband and I have been doing this for many years I think we've been on YouTube for about four or five years , but he recently started going to school full time, he's going to school to get his degree in computer science, he wants to get a B in computer science, so he's helping me more with our YouTube business while he's away. at school, although his school takes up most of the day, so it's about the same as if he were working full time.
I think we really underestimate how much time you spend when you're in class and you have to study and read, it really is like having a full time job, so if there's anyone watching who's currently studying full time and working or has done that in the past, we really want to I applaud you for your hard work, completing all that work and having a job because man, that's really hard, but now that all those things are out, I have to fill in the holes where all those things were, as well as the hinges there are. hinge screw holes and stuff like that, so I'm using Bondo.
This is my second time using Bondo and I'm getting used to it very quickly, so I know if you've never used it before either. You can also get used to it very quickly, you want to work in small batches and the reason is that the hardener in it hardens quite quickly. I would say in less than 10 minutes it starts to harden and is too thick to spread. So you have to work pretty quickly with this Bondo, but it dries very quickly which makes projects move very quickly and it's also stronger than most wood fillers and doesn't shrink like many wood fillers do. once you apply it on a little. holes, it won't shrink inside and show that depression where the hole was again.
Now I'm going to remove these aftermarket handles and I'm going to use some Bondo to cover those few holes that are here as well. The piece was very dirty and when something is that dirty I like to go in with my drill and some brushes to remove all the gross stuff that is dry or not sticky, anything that is there that would take forever to clean. or make you have to use a bunch of different rags to clean everything. I remove it with the brush first, so when I go to clean it it is much easier to clean and there is much less residue, so it builds up.
I get rid of all the cobwebs, all the dirt and dust and just the random crumbs of things that get in there and then I can go in and sand off all that Bondo that I put down and it becomes nice and smooth and flat, it's like never before. happened, none of those screw holes were there and then I'm going to use a type of paint that doesn't require me to sand this entire piece, so if you're wondering while you're looking at why not sand everything, get it ready for painting is because I'm going to paint with paint from polish and that's amazing it sticks really well so no need to prime unless you have a super slick surface then I would definitely sand some and primer and stuff but once I sand all of this I have to give it a deep clean and another thing to think about when you're sanding, even if you're not painting the sides of the drawers, go ahead and give them a good sanding because it makes them look new again and they'll slide much better after you're done sanding.
I do all the backup in my workshop now that I have used the brush. I have sanded. I've done all those things. I've created a lot of dust and I'm going to vacuum up all the dust I can. You can also use a blower like a leaf blower or something, but I like to use the vacuum because it blows out everything that's inside. the cracks that maybe a blower couldn't reach and then I hand sand the spots that my sander couldn't reach and that I noticed needed sanding before I finished vacuuming, but then I go back to get all of that.
Sawdust, it gets all that dust off of whatever gross stuff was there before and then that way when I go to clean it up there still isn't a lot of debris, it's a much faster way to clean and really very efficient, plus if all this It makes you sick. things, it really helps if you vacuum it before you clean it because it starts to look really gross when you wipe it with something wet when you have so much dust and dirt and cobwebs and I don't even know what else I don't know. I want to know what else because you know what dust is made of.
I mean, who knows where this piece has been or what it has seen. But I cleaned it all up off camera. I hate filming cleaning just because it takes forever, it's so boring and I hate cleaning, but now it's nice and clean and I use a disinfectant cleaner on pieces that I think are really dirty and gross, so I literally microband sanitized this when I cleaned it. Now I'm going to use some Bondo on the front of these drawers because I

totally

forgot to do that, but my Bondo already dried on my spatula, so I'm going to show you a trick you can do to remove the Bondo from your spatula, which consists of simply sanding it directly from your spatula.
I just sanded. it's soft, not necessarily back to metal because you'll keep putting Bondo over and over again as long as it's soft and usable, that's really all that matters, but it's time to take Bondo to these bigger holes so you can save time. I'm going to let it dry while I paint it. I'm painting it Laurel green. This painting was on clearance at Lowe's. I think I paid about $4 a can for this. It could have been less. I actually don't remember because I bought a ton of different paints, but I bought all the ones that were on clearance.
Something to remember is that many times when paints are on clearance it is because they are no longer going to be manufactured, so buy them all or make sure you have them. the exact right amount for whatever project you're doing because then you won't be able to get it back if you run out before you're done, so I bought every can I could get my hands on, so I think I bought maybe five or six of these cans, which which is more than enough, generally a shelf like this or a sideboard like this is four to five cans of enamel paint.
If you're wondering, I know a lot of people have asked me that in my previous videos, so I'd say five cans to be safe, especially if it's a little bigger than this and having the sixth can can help you later if you accidentally hurt this one. piece somehow and you need to touch it up, you never know what will happen with moving or kids. or you never know, but that way you have an extra if you plan to keep the piece you remade if you are following my instructions for this makeover, but I did two coats on all surfaces.
I actually usually start my pieces backwards, but I couldn't do that right now just for time reasons. I had no help getting this up at the time my husband was looking after the kids for me so I had to do what I could at the time I have four kids and I run my YouTube business and we also have a stand in a store and we are also starting an Etsy online store, so our time is very limited now that my husband came and helped me get this up. He had already done two layers on the sides so it was done, but now I had to do the base and I finished doing the rest of the two layers on the rest of the piece, you can see my face.
I'm not enjoying everything. spray paint gets in my eyes so I recently bought a new respirator that covers the eyes and everything like a full face gas mask so I will use that in the future and wear my hazmat suit because after I painted this. Even with a respirator on I felt bad for a few days afterward, like I was really sick, I didn't feel well at all, like I had a really bad cold or something. I'm also holding my chest so I don't bump into the Painter right there and I thought it was funny. I'll probably laugh, but now that it's dry, I'm going to sand it nice and flat and then paint it like the rest of the piece too, but I'm going to tape it down. sides to make sure I don't overspray that nice drawer I just sanded and cleaned to be free of this heart, yes, I want to feel your arms around me, I need you more, I need you here more than I'd like to admit.
Let's forget about tomorrow, yeah, I should hide forever, I should close my eyes and never hold you tight again, call you, I think of you every time I remember it's over, yeah, you never break, you never lie, you're never afraid of the dark, then why? Am I the one crying? I'm so afraid of being left behind. I think a lot about you. This piece is really coming together. It's the next day. I'm almost done with her. You can see my full face mask now that I was talking about earlier. I was wearing it because I was painting something else and when I'm sanding again I really want to cover everything so I don't have that sick feeling from breathing in something toxic.
I love this polish. paint, but I'll be honest with you, that's one of the main drawbacks of using it. If you have sensitivity to paint, this material is very strong so make sure you wear the proper PPE and I will. slight wear throughout the piece this piece is not perfect none of my pieces that I make are perfect first but this one has some characters, some ages, a story it tells so I'm going to do a little sanding and distressing all over the matter just to help highlight the details but also to show that this is an older piece and it's supposed to look like an older piece and not like something new that's trying to look perfect but it's beautiful with that light dressing and I think It was definitely the right decision.
I bought these handles at a garage sale. I think I paid about 75 cents for the pair, which was a big score. I haven't seen any garage sales lately, which is so great. a shame because the weather is perfect for it and yes, I measured by hand to make surewas equal on both sides. I'm an eyeball and if you're new you probably don't know that about me, but I hate measuring and doing things perfectly because it's not who I am, it's not in my DNA. My husband is the one who loves to do all those things, so when I need something perfectly done, he does it for me and helps me, but he watches how.
Great, this looked bad because I saw it here, it's inside my stand, the lighting is a little dubious in my stand. I really need to find a way to get rid of those shadows at the bottom of my pieces and maybe some underlying lighting, I don't. I know I really have to figure it out. I am not a professional lighting person. I don't know what you'd call that, but I need to figure out something to get rid of the shadows inside my shelves and my shelves in my Hut are like this, but this is just a good idea of what I have and how I've currently designed it.
I want to go back and style it a little bit differently, but I had just sold my last touch here, which was my French Provencial. You probably saw that in one of my last videos, but it just sold and I had to hurry up and put this new hutch in there as soon as I could, as soon as it was cured enough to go in there, so I quickly put what I could in there to display my items to sell and let me be honest with you about the way I present this. I don't think I really like the way it looks and I don't think anyone else likes the way it looks either because nothing.
It sold out from my booth in 2 days and it's the weekend so that shows you that people aren't buying because that's the time when people buy the most from our store so I really need to go back to the drawing board and discover how. I may organize my stands a little differently, but this is the next piece we're going to work on, so I got it for free on Facebook Marketplace, someone was getting rid of it. I didn't see anyone else show any. interested in picking it up, there was another person who said they might be interested, but they never went to pick it up, so when that happens, I say, well, no one seems to need it, so maybe I can take it if they want it.
I'm going to end up throwing it away and I ended up keeping this one because I wanted to use it in my booth to display my stuff because I thought this has a lot of character and could look really cool displaying my stuff. It has a shelf here and it's a very good size, but that top part needs to be removed. It was actually under a larger plywood top, a circular plywood top, and they were using it as a card table, maybe for poker or something, but it was as big as a large dining room table. , so I already removed that piece.
I don't show it in the video here, but this was the bottom piece that was just holding up that heavy plywood top and this thing was falling apart. I was meaning to flip it over and then cut it so it's square like the table, but there's no way it's going to survive cutting like that. I think I'm actually going to throw it all away because it was in a very rough state, it was kind of rotten or dry. something, but I had this on the day when being a hoarder might have been worth it. I see all these jokes all the time that hoarders save that one like random pieces of wood and then 20 years from now they take it out and say, look, I told you so. there was a reason to keep it this comes from a different table oh please it fits it's perfect it even matches the color of the wood oh my god i don't even have to repaint it you gotta be kidding me man and then it would be great to be able to open it honey look, we can actually open it and access the things that are there, it keeps getting better, but how would we keep it there?
Although that's the question, here's another good example of when I would use those electric toothbrushes and I'll link them in my Amazon store. I already have some in my Amazon store for you if you want to try them. I use these things for almost all the furniture I make and if you are someone who likes to redo furniture. Often, even if it's just for you, I think they're definitely worth buying, they're not expensive at all and I've used them so many times that they're actually wearing out and I'm about to need some more, but I want to add some wheels to this piece just because I think it will help increase the height a little bit, it will look great and also make it easier for me to move it around in my stand if I want to change it. eventually I want this piece to be right in the middle of my stand and have different things stacked on top of it at different heights because I think it would look really cute, but the way I put these wheels on, I'm just pre-drilling a hole which is about the size of that little piece of metal that comes with the wheel and then I'm going to put some glue on that piece of metal and just slide the wheel in there. um with that piece of metal there to hold it.
No, I really don't know what it's called. Sorry, this doesn't sound very scientific, but I bought these wheels from Amazon and will link to them on my Amazon. They're also pretty affordable at the store and I'm going to use them on some chairs in my house as well, but look, I'm just dipping this piece, whatever it is, into the hole I drilled so it stays nice and strong in there. and then I just slide the wheel on that piece for the top. I'm going to secure it using some small L brackets. I ran to the store and grabbed some L brackets but first I need to track where they are going to go because I want to drill them into the top piece first and then into the actual table, then you'll see what I mean but it's so good to see you we all do this days and I'm still so amazed by you, so hold me tight. through the night it's just us to me and you I can't believe you love me oh oh I feel so lucky oh I still can't believe you love me I hope it never ends it's being more than friends yeah you know I'm here to stay Every day, yeah, so hold me tight through the night.
I applied a little bit of glue just to make it even stronger because you know this is really old and I want to make sure it will work and last a while on my stand. at least and I just slid it in and it went back to where it was supposed to be based on the lines I had drawn and I'm screwing it to the actual piece of furniture. Now here she is at my booth, I put a not for sale sticker on there just because this is not for sale not right now and probably not for long if I ever sell it, but I have some things prepared here.
I think they look pretty good for now, but I really need to go. I went back and did something different with my booth design and maybe put an even bigger hutch in there. I also redid this hutch here on the left. I didn't film any of that though, but it was fake wood and like faux pressed board. I laminated some of it on top and spray painted it with gloss black enamel and then put some black hardware on it that I bought at Hobby Lobby and I think it went looks great, but now let's move on to the third Trash to Treasure.
This thing came with us from Arizona before we moved to Houston, almost 2 years ago, but it was made from a salvaged bead board we got from a built-in device. If you have been watching my channel for a long time. The time you saw this built-in, we actually built it into our laundry room, but we have a built-in that I assume came from some historic town in Arizona, maybe like Tombstone or something because it was so old and made of beadboard , but it was too big for the space we were putting it in in our laundry room, so we took it apart, took out the bead board to make it thinner so it would fit where we needed to put it, and we had all this.
The super thick historical remains, like a 1 inch thick bead board, so we kept them for a long time and made this board like we took a piece of plywood. Then we glued this bead board on top and I was going to use it as a wall decoration and put a crown on it or something, but when we walked into the house we are in now, in our Eden kitchen, there was an intercom system that was on the wall right in the middle of the wall in our Eden kitchen and it doesn't work if it worked I wouldn't have covered it up but since it doesn't work and I don't want to have to remove all that, there's no power coming or anything like that but since I didn't I wanted to fill in the drywall or whatever I had to do to fix it and get rid of it.
I just decided that it would be perfect to install on the wall and hold some really nice China that my grandmother had when she passed away. I decided that I wanted to keep it to help us preserve the memory of her amazing house that she had and all of her elegant and elegant decoration that she did. She's actually the person who got me started on Flipping Furniture and she used to do all of her home renovations. She literally has a book B that shows everything before and after with every receipt for every DIY she did in her house, that she bought and paid for on her account, she was a single mother with seven children and came so far in life. as far as buying her own house and paying for it in full and DIYing everything that was there, everything was original from the '70s, everything was dark brown and disgusting, and she did a complete job like, I don't know, like an album of clippings inside a notebook with each receipt. of all the things she did there and I still have it and I think it's the best, but that's where my love of decorating came from and I used to watch Trading Spaces back in the day, uh, when Trading Spaces was really, really popular and we talked about all of them. the different things we would have done and that also goes back to when decorating your house didn't have to be expensive when you could spend $20 on a gallon of paint and repaint a room.
Wow, it's crazy to think that wasn't that long ago. I guess maybe it was like 20 years ago, but it wasn't that long ago that I couldn't afford to do any of that and those prices. They're incredibly cheap compared to what they are now, so it's really fun to look back and think about how it all started and where my love for decorating came from and how different decorating has become compared to before, like before, no one really had these. Instagram-worthy houses because there was no Instagram, it was just you visiting your friends and family, there was no way to show the whole world what you had inside your house, it was only for your family and what you loved, and I think remembering that, especially, just thinking.
Right now, we really need to get back to that mindset that things don't have to be perfect and you don't have to compare your stuff to everyone else all the time, you can spend 20 bucks on something and make your house. I would feel better for you and how cool it would be if you swapped houses with your neighbor and spruced up each other's living rooms for a day. I would love to do it. That would be the best day of my life, even if it was very exhausting. I would. Have a lot of fun redecorating a room for my neighbor, obviously I literally do this for a living but I love it, I love my job, my husband and I love what we do but now I need to paint this white.
I want it to be white. and bright in the kitchen because our house doesn't get any natural light downstairs, but another thing I needed to do that I noticed after painting it was that I really needed to fill in all the cracks that were there, but the stain was coming out. The white was bleeding through the wood so I couldn't spray shellac there because it was already installed on the wall of our house so I'm just going to use a little bit of shellac with a foam brush and paint it to get rid of it. of that stain that is coming out and then apply a final coat that goes unnoticed.
The quickest and easiest way I can think of to fill in all the cracks and imperfections that are like major imperfections here is to just use some caulk and, if you've never used one of these before, all you do is cut the tip off and Pull that thing back, stick it in there and squeeze it and it will come out, it's that easy and I think this is one of the easiest things you can do. can do to fix something or even in your house, for example, if you are going to spend a day doing a deep cleaning in your house, go to the store and spend like four or five dollars on a hammering tube and make your baseboards or make around a door or a window frame or in your bathroom and you'll be amazed at how fresh and clean it looks once you're done and you'll be thinking why I didn't do it sooner.
It takes about 5-10 minutes and none of this is difficult at all, it's one of the easiest projects you can do, it's actually fun in a way, but you'll be amazed at how incredibly fresh your entire room looks after it's done. you fixed the assembly. around your room, especially in a bathroom, putting some fresh air in the bathroom makes it look fresh, clean and new again, like you are moving, hiding in the shadows, protecting yourself from daylight, no one I should have to live that. hey now it's okay now you don't have to hide from the world anymore hey now it's okay now it's your S time it's time to stand up straight and take a step towards the light it's time we once and for all have the same right come now Hey, it's okay now.
I saved this beautiful plate. I guess it's just a serving tray, whatever you want to call it, and I think it says Henry Alcock, but it's from England, and it's very old and super beautiful. I'll have to see it. how to search for iton Google or something, what era is this from, but I'm guessing it's probably the early 1900's I'm going to hang this plate, as well as many other plates, using these plate hangers I bought on Amazon. I will link it in My Amazon Store below it has these little rubber things that you can put in there to help not damage the plate.
I don't have anything super valuable like China in perfect condition so I'm not too worried about this damaging my dishes so that's why I'm okay with using them on the things I have because everything I already have has little imperfections that It's

totally

fine but I hung them all here using just one nail on my board if you're wondering if you could use command hooks here but I wouldn't put it anywhere where if something fell it could really hurt someone because the command hooks failed when they hold something. a lighter weight than its similar maximum capacity, so keep in mind that I would prefer if you used a real nail on the wall, but look how cool it turned out, there's my grandmother's plate, that pink one, the other ones I bought and that one with green rim is also my grandmother's and then the top two outer plates are also my grandmother's and in fact mine used from here in Texas, Texas has great antiques.
I love if they made it to the end. From this video I want to personally thank you for watching and supporting our channel. It really makes a difference for our family. We have new videos every Wednesday and Sunday. See you next time, bye.
