Your first 3 RF LENSES | CANON EOS R

Jun 08, 2021
Well, today's video is for all the new members of our eos r family. Welcome to the club today. We are talking about RF

lenses

. Let's get into it. OK, what happened? My name is Tony and I am a filmmaker photographer in the St Louis area today. We are talking about rf

lenses

. I want to share with you what I think about them. Maybe they just picked up an eos r for a great deal or maybe they pre-ordered an r5 r6 and are really excited about rf lenses. lenses and you're trying to decide which one should be

first

so that's what we're talking about today too, if you have some ef lenses they're worth something on these eos r bodies so let's talk about that real quick now that I came from 5d mark 4 and 80d , so I have a stack of EF lenses.

I also have some efs lenses and honestly if you get the

canon

adapter they work incredibly well, I'd say they work better on the eos r than they do. doing it on the 80d and the 5d mark iv and some of those other ef mount bodies, they just work amazing, the autofocus works great, it's like it's native, but the biggest problem is that you have that adapter on there and there are features on rf lenses. that's just not in ef lenses, like for example the day I bought my 70 to 200, they came out with a firmware update for this lens, a firmware update for my lens, which is kind of crazy because it improved the sharpness and reduced it.

More Interesting Facts About,

Minimum focus range was crazy, I can't believe it, so there are advantages to rf lenses, but if you have ef lenses, I recommend you go ahead and use those lenses for what you need them for, for now there are three different ones. you've probably heard all this before, there's just a boring old adapter for like 100 bucks you can get it, but I chose to get the upgrade that has the control ring and the really cool thing about that is that I have it on the trigger dial I use the shutter on the back dial I use my aperture and then on the control ring I'll use my iso and all my rf lenses also have that control ring which makes it really nice so going up to the control ring is really nice now there's one , it's incredibly expensive and has a built-in ND filter.

A really great idea. The problem is that you can't use that adapter with all

your

RF lenses, so you still need to carry

your

ND filters. I like it a lot. the idea of sliding an nd filter before the lens just takes care of all those weird light flares and weird things you get with the hangman filter on the front of the lens, but it's very expensive and you lose the ring of control and I don't work with rf lenses so I decided not to go with that one. Well, let's look at three lenses that I think you should consider purchasing

first

before everyone else.

Now there are all kinds of different price ranges and all kinds of different styles of photography. uh, if you're shooting astro, it may not work as well for portraits or vice versa. So what are these three lenses? These are basic lenses that will work with almost anything. I promise you these glasses are great. The first is believe it or not it's the kit lens and I have a filter here right now but this is the 24 to 105 millimeter f4 it's this lens if I was stuck on an island this is the lens I would want I'm telling you this one is Amazing it works for everything from wide angle to portraits to landscapes everything and believe it or not although it's an f4 which doesn't scare me in low light I mean these cameras shoot very well in low light so no I am terribly worried. about that and the blurred background I'm shooting at f4 right now, you probably couldn't even notice it.
I mean, f4 is fine if you know how to use it, so this lens is my favorite lens. I say that about all the lenses I buy, but I love this 24-105. I love the way it works. It has built-in image stabilization and is quite affordable. Now you can buy it with a camera as a kit or you can choose it. Separately, what I ended up doing was buying my camera without a lens and then I went with this guy, since a refurbished model on the Canon website comes with the same warranty, comes with the same, you know, build quality on It actually has more quality control, but Well, I bought it much cheaper, so one suggestion I have is to buy all your lenses, if you can, on the revamped Canon website.
Now they are not always in stock, sometimes they have offers at reduced prices, you just have to be careful. and keep an eye out for them to come into stock and pick one up now. The second lens I want to talk about is the 35 millimeter f 1.8, it's macro, what a big impact within that little lens, it's just a small one that we're shooting on. it's here right now let me grab it I love this little guy it's perfect this thing is like 400 bucks it comes with a control ring it has image stabilization built in it's a macro lens and it's a 35 the classic look you can't go wrong with I'm telling you what This little lens should be one of your first lenses and no matter what type of photography you do, it's perfect.
Now I have a second filter here. I actually use a step up ring because I have a lot of 67 millimeter lenses and I didn't want to buy a new uh filter, so I put a little step up ring on there. I can use some of my old 67 millimeter nd filters for like 100 millimeter macro lenses. 55 to 250 stm, 10 to 18 stm, I mean, it works very well. This is a great little lens for the price. Now we have one more that I want to talk about and it is the 70-200. Now it is the most expensive. one I'm going to suggest today and should probably be the third one if you already have an ef 70-200, they are perfectly fine, they work great on the eos r bodies, but just telling you the savings and the packability with this guy made it worth the price for me, not to mention the overall quality, I think it's better, it just looks better, feels better, has better image stabilization, this is an amazing lens, but it's quite expensive, I can't remember exactly what .
I paid maybe around $2500 or so for it, but I encourage you that this should be one of your next lenses. Just the fact that I can stack it vertically in my bag. I'm willing to take it because not. It doesn't take up a whole row, same thing inside a Pelican case, all that kind of stuff, it just works very well, so I encourage you that this should be one of your next lenses, very good among these three lenses, the 35 millimeters, the one from 24 to 105 and the. 70 to 200 you will have an incredibly versatile kit, in fact this weekend my second shooter at the wedding that's all they had, they had the 70 to 200 that stayed there probably 75 to 80 of the time and then they shot with the 24 to 105 if they were getting ready and the guys needed to have that a little bit wider, but he still needs some versatility, so he used a 24-105 and then in a low light situation he pulled out the old 35 millimeter, which looks brilliant.
Probably 90 of my wedding day as the main videographer with a 35 millimeter camera. Now I use f 1.4 because he had my 35 millimeter camera, but these are amazing lenses, they are so versatile and they look so good. I usually photograph a lot with the camera. 85 millimeter f 1.4 for portraits, but since this guy, I've been using this for almost all of my portraits because it looks so good, it looks so good and there is an advantage to having RF lenses and the biggest one is the fact that it just you don't have that adapter that keeps the bodies really small, plus these lenses are pretty small, I mean they're not big at all, this one is about the same size as the 35 millimeter f2, it's a little bit smaller esp. once you get rid of the adapter but it's the rf 24 to 105 it's much smaller than the ef 24 to 105 without even taking the adapter into account ok let's land this plane at the end of the day the ef lenses look great with these adapters I have one right here.
I can take it out. These adapters work well, but add extra weight and length to your camera. RF lenses will maximize your RF mount bodies. I promise you that they are the wave of the future. In fact, they are not going away, like I said, they have firmware updates, they look beautiful, they are sharp, they have additional features, like when you are in manual focus, you can see the length directly on the screen, different things. like this and they look amazing, so this is just a way to continue to evolve and get the most out of your cameras.
This video was helpful. Make sure you like it and if you have any questions or comments, maybe I have a lens you suggest leave it in the comments section below. There are other lenses from 28 to 70, from 24 to 70 uh f 2.8 and from 85 50. All of those lenses are really good and they are beautiful, they are expensive. and unless that's your thing, I only shoot in 50 millimeters, I just can't justify it. These glasses take care of me so much. I think these three lenses are the ones you should buy first. It's okay, everyone. We will subscribe to this channel if you haven't already, we talk a lot about the eos r system.
By the way, we will enter R5. A small update. I made a video a couple of weeks ago when the r5 r6 was released and I said I returned my or canceled my r6 preorder the reason was because of that all me as a professional videographer uh the ipb probably looks great but just I decided, you know, I just want to film with everything I have. I want to get the maximum. I have weddings that cost over four five six thousand dollars that people pay me and I want to have all the details I can get so I ended up booking an r5, well that was expensive. but it is what it is I have a couple of jobs in the next week or two that will help pay for everything and I can justify it that way and if Canon releases a firmware update like they are talking about all this Rumor has it I will probably buy an r6 to replace my eos r and I will give a really good deal to someone with this eos r so everything works everything is fine.
I'm really excited about the eos r6, it's still an amazing camera, especially for photographers, sports photography, low light photography, all that stuff, that's the camera you want and then if you want everything it will be an eos r5 ready for the future, that's where you want to go, such exciting times for

canon

i I'm excited, like I said, stick around, we talked a lot about Canon gear, thanks guys, have a good switch.
