You Know It's GNARLY When There's a WARNING!

May 29, 2021
Today on BCPOV We're back in B.C Riding the rock slabs of Squamish With different Pro lines Just kidding We're actually still in Quebec But you'd be forgiven if you believed me They're very similar to the ones we found in BC Last week we went to have a look to the super incredible circuit of the World Cross Country Championships. It has tested our skills. But now it's time for our next destination. A gentle drive southwest and we arrive at Sentiers du Moulin, just outside Quebec City. One of the largest route networks in the region. All routes start at this peak, but the route I'm looking for is actually not here, but on the neighboring mountain.

The route is called Wolverine and is not to be done without gloves, it is actually double rated black and. It is full of rock slabs. I love rock slabs but for Wolverine I wanted to ride Slab City, another route I had heard about, it's not on the map yet but with a little internet detective work we found what was probably the entrance to the route. It would have been,

when

we got there we found out that it was closed, a shame, because with a name like Slab City it seemed tailored to me, but we will talk about that later without being lucky enough to be able to drive a New route, we continued towards our objective original, Wolverine.

More Interesting Facts About,

you know it s gnarly when there s a warning...

It's not often you see these types of

warning

s at the start of the trail, but

when

you do, it usually promises a wild ride. We put on our knee pads and begin. , the route starts out pretty flat with a number of technical parts with some difficult climbs, it's a bit difficult for Yuka at this point I'm starting to realize that the mountain feels like a gigantic block of granite, all you have to do is. Just dig a little and you've found it. This granite reminds me of Squamish. Oh, slippery when I looked at the climb graph, it seemed to start off pretty flat and then drops steeply.

Brilliant. Ah, I'm sick judging by all these beautiful bridges from the locals. They are clearly passionate about mountain biking at the top of the climb, there is a family enjoying the view, they are trying to communicate with me But my French is, uhm... Bonjour *The boy says something in French Oh, not French Ah , Yeah! and then we reach the first of 3 Pro segments, it is a small part of the route that is more difficult than the part next to it, which gives it a pro segment rating and it doesn't look bad. The father of the family will come soon and see what I am doing.

It feels good? Uh, pretty good, I guess, yeah, yeah? Yeah, it's not that bad. I'm just waiting for my wife. OK. Yes. It's quite technical. Some rocks were placed to allow a mountain biker to ride off. Then Yuka arrives and I'm getting ready to try. Can you wait a second for my children? Oh man, now I have an audience. The whole family is here! It's not that bad Just some things that are hard to notice if you make a mistake Okay Yuka's a little nervous too But I'm sure she can do it I think it won't be that bad Oopsie So, you've never done this before?
No! I have kids Yes, but the kids will still do it for you, I think Oopsie! Nice! That was crazy. I don't

know

, but I thought I could go even slower than that. Oh yeah, you have to use your whole body and maintain your grip, but I didn't do a great job either. That's true, yes, she. She did a fantastic job, it's definitely an intimidating obstacle, but yeah, Yuka stood her ground. Okay, let's move on, Danger! Oh great! beautiful beautiful abyss there it would be, eh, a lot of work to clear this route, it is full as if they had dug into the rock Danger!
Oh, it's rolling. You can do it Yuka! Nice! It looks like little Squamish. Sometimes I'm such a coward at heart that... I almost fall. Oh really? Here we go to the right for a moment. Soften it. Well, let's see. This is probably the most difficult of the 3 pro route segments. on the right. Yes, it is much better to go further. Yes. A little wet down here, it's difficult, isn't it? My only problem is that I have to send it. Well, I'll take the easy way out. And if it goes well, maybe I'll come back and do this one.
I wish it was dry. Okay, now I'm going to take the main line, okay? Afterwards I definitely felt adrenaline but I felt good so I went back to see the full piece. How was it? Awesome! Awesome? Awesome! It's a really nice slab of rock, the bottom curves really nicely. It's very fluid. Yes, you see rock slabs like that in Squamish, where the bottom feels like a water slide. Well, with two of the three professional segments finished. Keep looking for the latest. A great path! Sick! One roll, another roll That doesn't look too bad A little drier here Apparently it's getting more sun And not long after we hit the third pro segment Oh, what's that?
There's another pro segment with a strange ladder bridge. This seems, uh, iffy. But as always, I'm a see-then-do type. Oh, this is easy, let's see. I think it's not so bad. Let's try it! How weird! This could very well be the biggest rock roll of the route. But it is also the easiest, with a fairly straight entrance and exit. All you have to do is hold on and not run over your wife at the bottom. The part with the stairs bridge was the most technical. Drive towards me. You were a little close to the road. Pleasant!
Good route And look, a fan passes by the canal and shows the rock to the camera. Beautiful! Good! Just wanted to say hi. I am a big fan of your channel. Pleased to meet you! Are you OK? Yes, this route is incredible. I saw you driving, it's Gee. Hi, I'm Eric, nice to meet you. Pleased to meet you. I watched your Bromont video. You said professional segments aren't real. . It's not exactly Whistler Pro. And here? The same? Yeah, I think in BC this is more likely to be double black and not a pro segment yet, but yeah, it's still pretty spicy, so cool!
It's really good, enjoy it. Yes, you too, if the big one is too much, there is a narrower double rock on the right. Oh, I think we've reached the end! High five! That was a nice route, wasn't it? It was fun. I give it five stars. Well, shall we return? I guess this is all we can do here. Although, remember that closed route we just passed at the beginning? A few days later we met a local YouTuber, Gabriel, from Mountain Bike Quebec, and he invited us to participate. He leads the route with Eric, the project manager here.
They were kind enough to show Yuka and me not one trail, but three, including a new climbing route to the top of the mountain. It ends up on a road, but that doesn't mean you have to use it, alone. drive on the rock slab right next to the road, this is amazing. You clean your tires. This place is starting to look more and more like a gigantic rock, it's quite steep and you have no escape from the sun. Eric told us that he will continue to build the climbing route, that way you can stay under the trees longer.
He had never climbed a rock slab before. Yes. That's amazing at the top. We are ready to dive into Slab City. Looks great. Yes, you have to dig it. everything there is on most of the entire route But how do you

know

there are rocks underneath? You just take a piece of metal and just... in this place we don't know it, it's a surprise, it's cool. Nice off camera. It reminds me of The Ribbon in Colorado except there are trees here on top of this rock. slab Like this Great, it's pretty incredible, I guess 95% of this route consists of rock Great.
I get a little nervous when it's wet, but it holds the grip so far. Brilliant. Oh, that's great. Ah, nice abyss. But wait! There is more! Oh, that's great, beautiful. Yes, this is really cool! It really is a unique route. Yes. So with Slab City behind us we continued towards Gold City, a fluid jumping circuit. Okay, well, I don't think I'm ready for this yet. I have to do them a few more times before I can take them off completely. I have to go even faster. Oh that's OK. I think I'll have to do it a few more times.
Oh yes, definitely. For the highest part you have to be committed. from the beginning Yes Otherwise it's like Yes, you hit your back So it's become clear that it's pretty good to ride here in Quebec City In fact, on this mountain with its granite trails it's like riding in Squamish And that had Never I thought about it before. I am grateful to Gabriel and Eric for showing me these routes. Slab City is really cool and interesting and of course Gold City looks like a real jumping track. I wish I could have repeated them a few more times.
These latter routes will not. open until 2020 So we are very grateful that you have given us this personal tour. But, as always, thanks for watching and staying calm.
