Why do Toyota engines consume oil ? And how to prevent it?

Jun 03, 2021
So, have you ever wondered why modern Toyota cars burn oil? You read this on the internet, people complain, people have problems, welcome to the car care channel, my name is AMD and in today's video we're going to talk about why it's modern. Toyotas are burning oil, what are the stages of oil consumption? That's actually the official name and, most importantly, what you can do to help avoid that excessive oil consumption, but before we start, if you're new to the channel, welcome, consider subscribing. to the channel check out some of my other videos if you are a returning subscriber thank you very much for watching another of my videos and without further ado let's dive in, first let's talk about what oil consumption is the official word and most people when their cars They start burning oil or consuming oil, they look for leaks, they look for the right people, there is no leak, which are the typical Toyota leaks that will cause that big quarter or two, three per thousand miles that would be. a giant puddle everywhere you go, oil leaks will usually drop a little bit of oil, but nothing like two and three quarters and people will say, well wait a second, my car is burning oil or I'm using oil, but I don't see blue smoke, friends and The catalytic converters on newer cars do such a good job that you won't see that typical blue smoke behind you unless you accelerate very hard, then you might see it, but again at that point you're probably driving on the highway and you won't see it.
why do toyota engines consume oil and how to prevent it
According to Toyota and this is their specification and it's not just the people at Toyota, it's all the manufacturers, if you burn a field every 1200 miles, that is the maximum consumption allowed, so if you burn a little less than a liter every 1200 miles, that's normal. Believe it or not, I know I'm with you, it sounds uh, not normal, but that's normal in today's cars, however, there are many things you can do to avoid it, let's do a little calculation before we get into details if you burn a quart every 1200 miles let's say you have a car that requires 45 quarts as most Toyotas use this amount by the time you get to your 5000 mile oil change hopefully you won't have any oil in the car and if you take that to 10,000 miles you're going to be negative 5 quarts so I don't know how that's normal but it actually is and let's dive into that right now let's talk about why cars burn oil these days and someone will jump to the comments and you will say my The 1997 camry has four or five hundred thousand miles, it doesn't burn a single drop and it is the best car and the quality of the Toyota has gone down and the world is about to end, let's go back to the horses and buggies, Well, that's not the case, believe it or not.

More Interesting Facts About,

why do toyota engines consume oil and how to prevent it...

These oil consumption problems have to do with something we all love: emissions regulations, believe it or not. This is a piston from a 2.4 liter 2azfe engine that has a Toyota campaign. This is an example of cars that have this engine. It's 2007. 2009. Toyota covered this for their owners, they took care of them, there was a problem, they wanted to keep people happy, so we ended up replacing pistons and rings. The rings are here now. The reason modern cars burn oil is very simple. Low tension piston rings. Rings in ancient times, these rings had high tension, they put too much tension, they're very rigid and strong, they have a lot of tension, so when they go up and down they're really effective at cleaning off that oil film, especially the last one. ring, so each will have three piston rings, two compression and one oil control ring.
why do toyota engines consume oil and how to prevent it
Right there you can see all three, so they're not actually called high tension rings, they're just normal rings, not low tension rings. it's enough work to stay at that high tension all the time where they don't come loose, of course there are exceptions to that from normal wear and tear and neglect, but low tension rings and the idea behind it is if you put less tension on the cylinder wall as this piston goes up and down you drive down the street this guy goes up and down doing all the magic inside the engine if you put low tension rings you will have less resistance the less resistance you have in your car the less load there will be on the engine, less load, less emissions, everyone is happy, the epa is happy and we are all one big happy family, however, that big happy family becomes really unhappy when the miles and age add up, which gives us leads to the stages. of the oil consumption stage one I'll call it stage, it's actually something I'm doing phase one, stage one whatever you want to call it, but step number one is the oil control rings because they don't have a very strong tension to begin with. with and they have holes where some of the compression air pushes them out to help them open, they start to stick from the oil build up, it's a little bit of sludge and we'll talk about that in a second, you get a little bit of oil sludge starting. these these ropes that are used to expand and contract and are very free now start to stick together, they don't have enough tension to push against the debris that is around them in the ring, by the way, the ring line is where you sit tight on the piston, they start to stick a little bit now, when the piston goes down, they don't scrape, they don't scrape the oil that is on the cylinder walls, well, you start to burn a little bit of oil and most people won't notice this because you're supposed to check the oil every time you fill up with gas.
why do toyota engines consume oil and how to prevent it
I hope, honestly, we don't do that. I do not do that. I don't expect you to do that. We all don't do that. check our oil from time to time, but not all the gases went down well in stage one, you're going to start burning maybe a liter when you get to the oil change, it's okay, it's not the end of the world, everyone says, well , you already know. It's a problem, but it's not really a problem until we move on to stage two. Stage two is when these strings just get completely stuck, now they're all stuck together with oil sludge and debris and everything and they become one solid piece that doesn't move. now there is no expansion there are no scratches that extra oil on the cylinder wall nothing happens it's like you don't have oil control rings well that's when the problems start that's when you start burning one course every thousand miles two races every thousand miles and those things get out of control and the typical thing with this is that people come to the dealership all the time I go for a drive and my car turns off or starts making noise or every time I break down the oil light comes on because it's out of control. very little amount of oil. in the oil pan, every time you step on the brakes, all that oil goes to the front and the oil pickup has nothing to collect, that says that the engine ran out of oil momentarily and, of course, that accelerates the wear of the engine quickly because now you have no oil and people don't realize this until the oil light comes on, friends the oil light is not an indication that the oil is low, it's basically telling you in a sense human that my heart skipped a beat, that's not good, we don't want it. to get to that point which brings us to when disasters actually occur, stage three, then this oil control ring that is now seized will eventually move to a position where it sticks out too far and is now scraping the oil off one side, but Because it sticks and doesn't move, it will start scraping in the same place over and over again until it wears down the cylinder wall.
The problem when that happens is that the car starts burning oil in a massive amount because now we no longer have oil burning. Problems due to the oil ring being stuck, we have oil passing through now that we have scored the cylinder wall where the oil just sits there and burns every time the piston goes down, it goes into the combustion chamber and burns and burns and on that point You will eventually wear down the cylinder wall so much that now the compression rings can't maintain compression either because now they almost have a passage for air to pass through and they can no longer keep everything sealed, so you start misfiring. and it really goes downhill from there, now the car gets to a point where it's like it's not just burning oil, it can't drive now we can't get past the emissions, the catalytic converters start to fail, the spark plugs start to fail and it's all downhill from there so at this point everyone is like the car that I drive I don't want to drive it again I'm selling it I'm going to buy a horse and buggy and that's what I'm going to do because I'm really worried but hang tight with me, hang on with me for a minute while we talk about what could have been done to avoid this whole mess, friends, what could have been done to avoid this oil change on time and with good oil is as simple as that , it all comes down to oil again, we have a problem with oil burning because of the oil that most manufacturers have turned to, including Toyota who did long oil changes 10,000 miles, one year life, cars with low maintenance cost, this and that, but if you really get into the fine print, if you will discover that it is you who is misinformed, not them playing games or lying to you, for example, did you know that if you make repeated short trips in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below zero you no longer qualify for the 10,000 miles? oil changes did you know that if you have a long idling, like sitting in heavy traffic, that's a long idling, you're stuck in traffic every day you live in a major city, you're always stuck in traffic, do you know that qualifies for five thousand miles?
Oil changes are no longer ten thousand miles and the biggest offenders of this ten thousand mile oil change in a year are people who don't drive their cars much, first, they always make repeated trips of short distances without letting the engine be hot and the second. The thing is, they go for miles, they drive 3,000 miles a year and they forget the moment when they keep driving 3,000 miles a year until they reach 10,000. We're talking for three years from the same oil people, it all comes down to how you maintain your car and I'm not just talking about a paper reading.
I will share with you my personal experience with me and a member of my family. I had a 2012 camry with a 2 ar fe engine. I bought it new a week later. a family member bought the exact same car with the exact same thing i changed my oil every three or four thousand miles most of five thousand miles that's what i did i used

toyota

or mobile oil i used a stock filter i drove my car very hard i drive a lot and I'm always in a hurry. I work 80 hours a week. That's right, so I drove my car a lot, but I did the oil change between three and five thousand miles.
A member of my family did the oil change every 10,000 miles but they spent the year because they didn't drive the car much when I reached 92,000 miles they only put 49 thousand at 92,000 miles my car didn't burn a single drop in the oil change 5000 mile oil or whatever I do, the oil change, I check that the oil is full, it's exactly the same as when I did the last oil change, a member of my family, however, they never got to the oil change because The car started burning two quarters every thousand miles and they finally got it done.
They got rid of the car because they were sick and tired because there was cylinder wall damage and it was a done deal. I did not do anything special. In fact, they in the photo took better care of their car. They washed it, it was always clean. my car was always driving in the middle of the winter covered in salt I didn't have much time to wax and clean and doing so I wasn't my daily driver I didn't have time to start waxing and cleaning if I show you both cars parked side by side you would think that Their car is much better, but that's not the case because they didn't do their oil changes, they didn't look, I'm driving these short trips and they live around here.
You drive these repeated short trips, oh, I'm just going to go to the grocery store and come back, and when it's 15 degrees outside Fahrenheit, sure, but what about the oil change? You spent two years and three years on the same oil, that's what makes that oil just sit still. There, every time you start your car cold, you have raw fuel getting into your oil, there is nothing you can do about it. That's what gasoline

engines

are like, so oil changes take mileage and time, and you don't want the oil to sit there either. Fuel forever, you're going to want to change it because that fuel, that little bit of fuel that gets into the oil, it's going to break it down and you're going to want to take it out and freshen it up.
It's not just about miles, it's about time. It's very important here folks, I love you all and I want your cars to never burn oil, but if you don't listen to me, read the owner's manual, dig into it, understand it, look at your driving conditions and people will say, "Good." . I only did this twice, it doesn't matter, that's how the owner's manual says it. People fight with me in the comments and in all the emails. I don't want to do my oil change every 5,000. I want to do it every 10,000 the engineers know what they're talking about you're just a fool on youtube well let me rephrase I might be a fool on youtube but I'm also the one breaking these

engines

and find the damage and the engineers didn't tell you to do that, they told you that if you meet these conditionsyou should change the oil before that's exactly what they did i'm not saying this because i didn't take this out of my pocket friends i'm doing this because i care about you i want you to do what's best for your car it's the second biggest investment you've ever made please do cheap insurance oil changes this is what will

prevent

your car from having oil burning problems now some cars some engines like the 2a zfe there was a problem with that that's why Toyota told you know what we are going to take care of you because You bought a Toyota, they did, that's what Toyota does for its customers, that's why it's an amazing company, but other engines that burn oil, do it out of negligence, not because they have a casing point of the engine problem. 2ar fe famous for burning oil when you don't take care of it horribly worse than the 2azfe the 2.4 liter that had the campaign or some people call it a recall it's not a recall it's a campaign it's a customer service program that the 2ar is known for destroy the cylinder wall when this happens to you when the oil control ring shows and I've seen many of them grab it you pull it apart guess what cylinder wall it's chewed up it's gone no fix now. you need a whole new engine folks it all comes down to oil changes and let me tell you something else it's not going to happen overnight it's not going to be oh my gosh I just watched this video I have a car new and I'm actually doing this and I just realized I totaled my car I have to trade it in and leave now it doesn't happen like that we're talking if you've been doing this consistently for five six years that's when things get really bad terrible but I always encourage you to change course and start watching your oil changes.
This makes a big difference and you know. Here is another suggestion for you instead of looking and thinking. I did this? Wait? I did that? Did you rate this? Why not? We just take out the gray areas and make it black and white so you can change your oil every five thousand miles for six months and you'll never have to worry about it. Why make the guest game? I have always told you and some. Unfortunately some of you have fought me on this, in the end it's not worth it, it's your car, it's your investment, it's your decision, but listen to me when I tell you 5,000 miles of oil changes in six months, whichever comes first , play it safe. don't push your car to the limit just for the sake of it and before we end this video I want to share with you some things now that you just watched this video you just realized this you're looking for this because your car is actually burning oil it's starting to , we talk about stages one, two and three, if you are in stage three, which can be easily found, the spark plug comes out, we put a camera in, we inspect the cylinder, if it's scored, that's it, there's nothing that can help. you have to take the engine apart, replace the

toyota

block, you can't machine the cylinder walls on the newer engines that's right but if you're at stage one or two we've had good success and this isn't 100% guaranteed . oil system cleaners unfortunately I can't recommend a specific brand because the brands we use at the dealership are not available for retail sales, however, do your research, there are many good products available for oil cleaning, it's the type of product. that you add to the oil, let the engine run for 20-30 minutes, turn it off, drain the oil, do a complete oil change, all those cleaners are harsh detergents, they're going to get to this ring that's stuck and they're going to attack that rubber and grime that are trapped here and it will release it, if you release it a little bit it will start moving again and then a good maintenance of oil will follow.
Now it will really break free and go away. to improve oil burning, if you don't take full care of it now there are no guarantees because it depends on how severe this is and you don't want to have this detergent as some people will say and they have tried it and unfortunately I had other problems, well I'm just going to clean the oil well at each oil change, the problem is that you put these high and strong detergents in the engine, now you are going to begin to attack the seals, the sealants that form in their place, the gasket and it becomes counterproductive because now the engine will not burn oil but it will leak everywhere so do it but don't overdo it with motor oil cleaners.
If you would try it once, if it improves a little, wait a couple of oil changes and then try again. Don't overdo it either. because we have seen people exaggerate and problems started and you don't want that either. One thing I never want you to do and please listen to me here if you have watched this video for that long. I want some people to hear this. when your modern engines start burning oil, okay, so let's say your car runs 0w20, it's burning oil fine, I'm just going to put 530. Sure you can slow down the oil burning rate, but it's still burning, that's not a solution, like when your radiator leaks, you don't put stop the leak, that stops the leak and clogs up everything else, in my opinion, you fix the radiator, the engine is burning oil, fix the problem, you don't mask it, putting Heavier oil, yes, sure it could reduce consumption, but that is not a solution.
Don't think it's a solution. I would prefer that you invest in oil cleaning because it could actually solve the problem or you can use the right oil for the car and not burn oil. I just wanted to bring this to your attention because you're going to read this everywhere. This worked with the older style engines, but with the newer engines you are just masking the problem and not fixing it. I strongly recommend that you try to fix it properly. I hope this video was helpful, informative and I know some of you will not like what I said in this video and I say this to you, please follow the maintenance, take care of your car, some people take care of their cars, but because to these little gray areas, they actually end up not taking them. take care of your car, friends, oils are cheap, oil filters are cheap, I always recommend that you use a good quality oil filter, the best quality oil filter is the original, the best quality oil is the original oil that you can buy at the dealership or at the mobile or cazuela or any of the good brands that exist, it doesn't have to be just one brand of oil, in the end it is oil and please do me one last favor before I let you go there, do not buy very expensive oil and I have seen it.
This is also a very, very expensive oil that promises to the world, oh, you can change the oil every 15 and 20,000 miles. You're much better off buying the cheapest, most generic, most horrible oil, and changing it every three thousand miles. Then you will continue with this one. Very expensive oil and it costs fifteen twenty thousand, that's not a good idea with Toyotas, maybe it works for others, but here we are talking about Toyotas that don't work very well. I hope you learned something new in this video. I hope it was informative. and useful for you if you liked it please like if you are not a subscriber consider subscribing and watch some of my other videos may the Lord bless you and keep you and have a wonderful day.
