Mar 14, 2024
Hello guys, good morning, welcome to the jeep solid garage, so today Sasha's car is only going to receive a

makeover

. She needs a bit of a

makeover

. She has some paint tissues. The top layer. The

clear

coat

is peeling. Let's take a look at that. So the paint on your car. it actually has a few different

coat

s and this flaking that we're seeing here, so this is the

clear

coat, so the shiny part of the clear coat is flaking down to the paint color, so we have the clear coat, the color of the paint. Below that we have a primer or base coat.

If we sand this, we'll sand the top layer down to just this layer of paint and it's okay if we go through the primer a little bit. Okay, but we want to try. to just remove the top layer, the clear coat, if we leave it all the way down to the bare metal, then we need to apply a little bit of primer. I don't want to have to do that, so we'll just give this a very light sanding. we're going to start with just doing the hood, we're going to tackle this kind of small project, we're not going to take on too much at once, okay, okay, because the rest of the vehicle is actually not in bad shape, the rest of the paint and the clear coat are fine of course, the top of the roof has issues that we'll get into later, but since this is a beginner project we're figuring out exactly how to do it better.

To get it right, we'll start by just doing the hood, which is a good starting point and my motto is not to make it worse. There's our nice 4 liter engine and this video is sponsored by Engine Tech, they have it all. You need to keep your engine in good working order and repair any broken parts. They have new heads, valves, full gasket sets, valve seals, crankshafts, camshafts. Be sure to visit their website linked in the description below for any of your engine parts you need. Correct step number. one we are going to wash very well, so next we are going to take the hood off and sand it because it will be easier to paint, we don't have to tape everything up, so we are just going to take this off the vehicle right now, this is the super fun part where we sand, this is the one that takes a lot of time, the prep work is the worst part of this project so you need a mask because you don't want to breathe in the dust. that we're going to lift is really bad for you, we have 320 grit sandpaper and when we sand we want to remove just this clear coat, remember we don't want to get to the metal. right down to the bare metal, if we get to the primer, that's fine, but we're going to sand very lightly, here we have some sanding blocks that we're going to use to help make the areas nice and smooth on these.

The areas that are marked we will just do it with our fingers with the sandpaper, we are not going to use the sanding blocks, okay, perfect, let's sand this and on these edges we want to be very careful because we will cut those edges very quickly, okay , and we're just trying to get through the clear coat in these areas where we already have paint left. You don't need to do much, let's just scrape that off. like these areas that are reduced to the paint, but we're going to blend this back so that all these edges blend together, okay, okay, and we're going to do these outlines by hand, like this part where the indent is where you're curved.

Use the block on that, okay, obviously, we brought the hood into the garage and we hung it up and we hung it vertically, actually a little bit to our advantage, so then the dust or anything that doesn't like to fall and settle on our paint fresh, okay, okay. So now we've been touching this with our hands, so we have to clean off the grease, oil and the last bits of dirt. And I saw another guy who paints a lot of vehicles that uses glass cleaner because it doesn't leave streaks and doesn't leave marks. The residue may be a little different than anything they've ever seen, but he says it works great and he hasn't had any problems with it, so once they take some glass cleaner and wipe the entire hood with our lint-free cloth, now, just before.
When we paint you will take a sticky cloth and go over the entire surface again and that is exactly what it sounds like, it is a sticky cloth so it will pick up any leftover dirt or dust so I will use a This touch up paint from paintscratch. com and no, this is not a sponsored video by them. I ordered this specifically to match the color of your jeep, so from the make and model I was able to look up exactly what color your jeep is. I got the exact color of paint from them, I think it costs like 25 cans or something, not cheap but should be a perfect match except because your vehicle is 20 something years old the rest of the paint may fade a little . a little bit where this is going to be like new okay so it may not be an exact perfect match if that makes sense because yeah older stuff can be a little bit faded but remember our goal is to not exactly make it worse and then just keep going the instructions. in the can of paint that you get from whatever manufacturer you use, so we're degreasing it by priming wet sand, we don't have to do any of that because we're not taking it down to the bare metal, we're going to shake this for a minute and then we're going to give it two or three light coats, waiting about 15 minutes between each coat, so this should be fun, of course, we'll use a mask, a proper mask thief paint because this has toxic fumes while we're painting.
I'm going to keep this about 10 to 12 inches apart and I want to be very consistent. I don't want to get in and out right. Well, I'm going to start at the top and I'm going to work my way down because I don't want to, I don't want to go from the bottom up because I don't want my paint dust to fall on the wet, sticky paint, okay? We're going to start at the top and I'm going to go all the way in big sweeping motions, um, all the way to the end, I'm not going to stop right at the edge, in fact, I'm going to go over the edge a little bit and I'm going to do it horizontally like this all the way down and then I'll let it dry for about 15 minutes and then I'll do it, I think I'll probably do it diagonally because I don't want any streaks, if you do everything in the same direction you might end up with a streaky looking paint so you have to change the directions between layers, okay, let's do it.
I'm going to use my second can of paint this will be my fourth coat so you know it says two or three but it takes more but the coats I'm doing are very light but just for reference to make a hood it will take two cans, one just isn't enough. so we have, oh my gosh, I think I gave it four or five coats. The paints actually look pretty good if I look really close, I can see a little bit of streaking, it's not a perfect job, but it looks better than before, so now we have We're going to sand it, we're going to do a wet sanding just to get any little imperfections out with a super soft 1 500 grit sandpaper and we just want to give it a very light wet sand so you're really I'm going to dip that in the water, I have a little

spray

bottle just sand it with a circular motion there and just a lot of light and then you can also take a little bit of water and we'll wet it while we're sanding and basically you're just trying to cover the surface real quick, don't hit any of these edges with that block, we have to do that with the sharpened edges by hand, okay, okay, we're not really trying to remove the paint, you know you don't want to go through all the paint, so go very light and keep wetting the block because you want it to drip from there, yeah, that's it It looks pretty good now that it has all this dust. top so let's grab some towels let's go wash it put some clean towels on start lowering the top and we're just wiping away all the dust that we just created it's okay if it drips and then let's get some new towels and we'll do it while it's clean okay let's dry it now and by lutz I mean all of you now let's hit it with the attack cloth try to keep your hands away like we don't want the oils on your hands. and hold the back of the boat if you want, we have a clear coat now, so this was ordered on Amazon.
I'll be sure to link the clear coat in the description below and this is a two part system. a base here and an activator, we're going to put it together, we hit the bottom to activate it and then we have, I think it's actually a couple of days to use it, but we'll do it now and we'll do it. an initial coat of a really light coat and then let it dry for a few minutes. It says it's good for 48 hours once it activates, so after we apply that light coat, we'll reapply a thicker coat. wet coat all the way, let it dry and then maybe apply a final light coat on top and then we should be good, okay, nice painted top coat, now we need to cut it and polish it so we have some glaze of McGuire mirror ultra cutting compound this is a unique super micro abrasive technology, not normal super micro micro exactly, so we have our cutting compound, we're going to polish this real quick to get a nice shine, we're going to hit it with a microfiber towel and we'll make sure there's no dust on it, okay, we'll polish it a little bit, okay, now pick an area like a quarter of the panel, turn it over, just rub it a few times on the hood, yeah, and then pull the trigger and do a little faster twisting movements there.
All good, I saw all that cutting compound, good, we're done, we just hit it with some paste wax, so the hood looks great now, I'd say it's 47 times better than it was, oh yeah, that it looks a lot. better than before there are still some flaws because you know you are your own worst critic so we can pick out all the little flaws it's not a perfect job but it's definitely a lot better so our motto was don't do it The work doesn't make it worse so I think we are there. Thank you all so much for watching and have a nice day.
