Of all things, just like everyone else, they need to make money, but if you don't care about the length of your repair and just want your panel to look better than it does now, there is a way to do it yourself in this video . I'm going to show you how now the quality of your repair will vary depending on how long the clear coat has been neglected and

damaged

, so get some car wash soap and with a clean sponge give the panel you want to clean a good wash. repaired and then we will rinse our panel with a clean bucket of water and then we will dry our panel using a microfiber towel or in my case the sponge, so before we can apply a new clear coat to this. area and hopefully improve the look of this panel, we need to remove any old clear coat that may be coming off and at the same time scrape off any old clear coat that may be in good shape so that when we apply our core coat it will have something to stick and for this I like to use a gray Scotch Brite pad because not only will it scratch our panel but also because of its texture and shape it will help remove any old, flaky clear coat that we have here and as I said in my other video that this is a Scottish brake pad for auto body repair and finishing, not just any Scottish braided pad.

Now, if you are interested in this or any other tool or product used in this video, you can purchase a construction store. You can find them for cheap in the description box, so don't be afraid to click on them and check them out now before you start using our Scottish Braid Pad. It's a good idea to mask off any adjacent panels that you don't want scratched. I'm actually going to mask off this rear quarter panel as well as the roof because I don't want this video to be too long and I'll do that later on so if you're new to this when you go to apply your masking tape, make sure you put the masking tape on. only on the panel you want to mask because let's say you're not careful and some of this masking tape ends up on this panel later when you apply your clear. layer and then the clear coat dries and you're going to remove the tape.

When you do this, you'll be removing some of your nuclear code with it, so make sure you're ready between the two panels and then, uh. use a bunch of small pieces of masking tape if you have to so you don't ruin your hard work when you go to peel them off so we do the same for the roof make sure to slide this piece of tape under our panel and now we can use our Scotch Brite Pad, but something I forgot is that for this you will also need a little effort again. Link in the description box below and when you're doing this, you'll want to apply.
Nice, even, firm pressure, make sure you go over all the areas and get as much flaking as possible, click this here off of this panel and the areas you want to pay special attention to are going to be around the edges and the corners because If you don't scrape them off, this is where your new clear coat will start to peel off, bend the head of your scotch pipe if necessary and go over all of these corners and edges many times. I'll just go over all the edges. first get them out of the way and then the rest is pretty easy so here's a look at what we have so far, as you can see it's pretty worn out.
Now there is something very important you need to pay attention to just because your clear coat damage ends up in a certain place, that doesn't mean you should stop scraping it off in that area as well. We need a buffer zone where we will mix the new transparent layer that we are going to apply to this panel. old clear coat that is on this panel now, in this particular case, it might be easier to just sand or scrape this panel since it pretty much ends here up to here and then apply clear coat to this entire segment, but then again people don't You would learn how to blend the core coat with the old clear coat, so here's what you do: Where the clinical damage ends, you need to continue sanding or scraping the panel about five or six inches beyond that area and again, since the our ends here, we'll continue past it's pretty much over here, so here's a look at what we have, as you can see, this is nice and evenly worn down to here, so once again.
We'll take our bucket of water and rinse our repair area and then dry it completely. It is very important that it is dry before the next step. Alright, next we're going to mask our repair area using some masking paper newspapers or In my case, I'm going to use these blue towels, so here's another important tip when it comes time to mask off the mixing area that you don't want to mask, where marks and scratches really need to show up. a few inches and then put the masking tape and the paper here, but you want to avoid laying the masking tape flat like this because when you spray a clear coat here you will have a line where you put the masking tape, so what I want to do is mask this blend area and the way to do this is to place the masking paper right above the area where you want a mask, then apply the masking tape and then just push or pull back the masking paper. and that's it now, instead of a flat piece of tape, this is what you have now, which will help you avoid a thick clear coat line here after you apply your new clear coat to this panel and then it's time from spraying our clear coat. and I highly recommend that you use a 2K clear coat, which is what I have here, which basically means that your clear coat comes with its own activator or hardener.
These 2K clear coats are much more durable and last much longer compared to 1K ones. You buy the coats at your local auto parts store, but the only problem is that if you want to buy one of these in a spray can, you will have to find a local body shop supply store that sells them or you can buy them at line again. If you want to buy them online, I put a link in the description where you can find it, so the way we're going to activate this is to first shake it for a good two minutes, and then we're going to remove this little red cap from the top of the can and then put it on the bottom, put it back on the ground like this and then we're going to press this and this mixes our hardener with our clear coat, there we go and then shake it for another two minutes, you almost said it was going to be easy and one last thing before you start spraying is you want to get an antistatic cloth and gently tack the panel this way you will remove any dust particles that may still be here just before you start spraying your clear coat.
Next, about eight inches away, you basically want to point and shoot and you want to apply about three medium coats, waiting about 10 minutes between each coat and the difference between one light coat. coat vs. medium coat vs. wet coat is basically the speed at which you are applying the clear coat, so if it was going really fast that would mean it was applying a light coat, if it was just going at a medium speed it would be a medium coat. coat if you were going very slow that would mean you were applying a heavy or wet coat and another tip for beginners is that you should first start moving the can, then start spraying and then when you get to the ends where you want to stop. you want to drop this and then stop moving because if you don't start moving first before you start applying a clear coat or paint, you're going to end up leaving a spot of light code where you started or when you stopped spraying and you don't really want to do that, that just not good practice, plus you're spraying a 2K clear coat, you'll need one of these, here we go, so this is how things look after the first coat already looks pretty shiny I should say, but we can't celebrate still because things are going to look very different when they're completely dry and this clear coat dries, but for now we're just going to wait another 10 minutes and apply our second coat at the right time for our second pass.
Okay, now it looks even better, but if you put your eye right next to it, you can still see some of the white marks that were on the old worn clear coat. I guess we'll find out what it looks like soon, but for now. We will wait another 10 minutes and apply our third layer. Next we will wait about two or three hours and then we will remove the masking paper and the adhesive tape. Well, it's two hours later and we're ready. To peel off our masking paper, here's another important tip I can give you and that is if you're peeling off the masking tape directly from an adjacent panel, remove it away from the panel where it has a clear coat like this, if there are clear coats. still attached to this adhesive tape, it peels off around the edges and does not peel off or remove any more clear layer from your panel.
By the way, I talked about a before and after shot, this is a pretty big improvement if you ask me, but again, this clear coat hasn't dried yet so we're not going to celebrate it yet, so here's what the things without tape and this is what things look like in our mixing area, we still have a little bit of a line here, but that's it. Not bad, we should have no problem mixing our new clear coat with our old clear coat, but in order to make our mixes we will have to wait at least 48 hours for this clear coat to dry and harden, but if you have the luxury of wait even longer so let's say you waited a week or two before doing your mix, that would be perfect now as to how soon after applying the clear coat can you drive your car well, ideally let it sit. overnight because if you drive it before, say, three four five hours, you run the risk of dust and debris getting stuck in your new clear coat.
Alright guys, welcome back. It's been a couple of days since we last sprayed our clear wire here. now we are ready to do our mixture first, let me give you a close up of our repair area, as you can see, it turned out very well, very nice and shiny with minimal orange peel, yes, this clear coat is quite good. I don't get much better results than this using a spray can, but as expected, if you look very closely you can still see the white marks left from the old clear coat, but from a few feet away it looks just as good. like new and it's a night and day difference compared to the old clear coat, good enough to gloat about, let me show you how you can mix this now, what you want to do next is put your sauce on 1500 grit sandpaper and then use a light sanding. block and some clean water, lightly sand this blend area between our two clear coats.
Basically we're trying to get rid of this line that we had here and have a smooth transition between the two clear coats and from time to time make sure to clean up the area and check your work, you don't want to overdo it and remove too much of your new clear coat we just applied there, so here's a close look at what we have now. We got rid of our line that was here, but we removed some of our new clear coat, but it's okay, it's not too much and this shouldn't be a problem, so next you're going to have to get a polisher like this and then get a polishing pad. wool and place it on your polisher and then using amedium grit rubbing compound, completely buff this area where we have the opaque clear coat.
Now here's something else that is very important that you need to pay close attention to when polishing this area, you need to make sure the direction of rotation of your polisher is away from the new clear coat that you just applied here, so this polish that I have here it's going to spin in this direction, so I'm going to go in this direction, so as it spins, it's just going to heat up. this area and apply more of the old clear coat because if you go the other direction, let's say you go this direction as you rotate, this will heat up this area more on the side of the new clear coat and it will just peel off the new clear coat that you just put there and obviously you don't want that and you want to set it on low to medium speed and as you go down and back up try to have almost no pressure or maybe even lift this up and go back up and down over the clear coat area and use almost no pressure, very little pressure while you're polishing.
First we'll apply some rubbing compound and I'm almost done, but this should be enough. Now we'll spread this out so it doesn't fall on us, then we'll put our polisher on low heat and start polishing. and then after a couple of passes we will clean the area and then we will review our work, as you can see we made improvements, but we can still see the transition line, in fact it looks more because of the lighting, if I were to cover this. We'd see a lot less, but we'll still have to do this a couple more times until we get rid of this, so about three passes later, here's a look at our transition area.
I'm not even sure if The Boys will be able to catch this on camera, but it's right here, this is where our transition happened again. You can still see it if you put your eye right next to it and know exactly where to look and all that, but again. from one or two meters you can't really see the transition, you can see a little bit from this angle and maybe I could polish this a little more, but again, this will never be perfect, but when you compare it to what you had before You could argue that now it's perfect.
Another thing you can do to hide this is put a little wax here in this transition area, but generally speaking you should wait at least a month before applying the freshly sprayed wax clear coat, so there you go. People repairing stains on your clear coat can greatly improve the look of your clear coat, but it will never look as good as new or as good as if you were to completely paint and clear coat the attached panel. Also, your results may vary depending on how long the clear coat was left neglected, as this clear coat was not that severe, while the clear coat on the green Toyota I showed earlier in this video is a pretty severe case now if you have Curious about what it would look like.
I like it and when we do a Toyota Camry clear coat repair video, I'll do a poll and I'll put a link right here on this side of the screen that you can participate in and there will be enough bullets for me to do another one. video about it I will make another video about it and post it on my channel so that's it.
