Minecraft Beta's Last Unsolved Mystery

May 02, 2024
I stumbled upon a rather strange post on an obscure Minecraft forum. It's from a user called faceless. The post contains the contents of a message from someone named David who believes he owns a cursed Minecraft world. Let's take a look at these messages. I hope you can help me with a rather strange case that happened to me since I understand that you have extensive knowledge about the dark side of games and in this case the game in question is Minecraft David's story begins back in 2011 in Minecraft Beta 1.3 that describes the post. How David and his friends played on a personal Minecraft server.
minecraft beta s last unsolved mystery
Initially things started out normally, but after about a week strange problems started occurring. A friend of mine built a hotel and it seems to be the source of all the problems. Inexplicably, an unreasonable amount of creepers. It began to appear near the hotel, there were about 400 of them. His friend built a long tunnel called The Maze of Doom that led to his new house, but the strange insect continued. The vines appeared so frequently that the group finally decided to leave their world. We finally decided to say goodbye to our dear and expensive server and moved on in our lives 3 years later.

Nostalgia made David find the server backup. I decided to dig deeper into my backup files and disks. I found the server folder called bancha. David copied it in single player. When starting the game his computer crashed with a blue screen of death, he tried again and was able to enter the world, but David discovered that something changed. I rebooted and tried to enter the world again. Now I witnessed something strange. All the creepers had turned. in cows with the same amount as before around 200 intrigued David recruited a friend to help him explore they opened the world on a multiplayer server disabling mobs to eliminate the cows the team went to the Maze of Doom but the server crashed several times changing His focus David remained on the surface while his friend navigated the tunnels below, then David discovered something.

I saw something strange. A peculiar structure that looked like a tomb made of quartz blocks. The disturbing thing is that this block did not exist in the

beta

, it is not a case of Minecraft's new features mixed with the old when my friend's maze passed under this tomb, indicating that the structure existed when we played; However, the strange thing is that I asked everyone who played on the server if they built such a structure and they all claimed to have it. I have no idea what he was talking about so I decided to let it go.

David tried to access the server again later, but a blue screen appeared every time he tried to connect, so he decided to walk away from the situation and send the message to whoever he posted facelessly. Maybe someone in the forum can understand it. David's story is a remarkable one, describing strange occurrences in a

beta

Minecraft world. These are the types of claims that have become popular since the proliferation of Herobrine, but there is something that establishes David's situation. Aside from the rest, I'm attaching the original World file directly from the backup that hasn't been opened since 2011, if you like, I've also documented some of the other server crashes and strange things that happened below the text on the Forum .
The post is a link to a download of David's World, perhaps inside we will find the answers to one of Minecraft's darkest

unsolved

mysteries, the

mystery

of bban. The attached file is called David andema server. RAR upon extraction, we find that the file structure is actually somewhat complicated, there are multiple world saves, other ra files, and server files, all of which are from 2011. Untangling the mess requires a bit of work. There are a total of six different Minecraft saves inside. this file scattered throughout the file system, these saves represent snapshots of two different worlds at various points in time, a level called World 4 and bancha that was mentioned in the DM, assuming the metadata is correct we can use the attribute modification date to place these saved.
Chronological order let's start with world 4, the larger of the two, there are a couple of snapshots, one with just the bottom one saved on February 2, 2011 and a raw file containing the entire world saved on February 7. These dates suggest that world 4 was played in Minecraft. Beta 1.2 and there are some additional details supporting this World 4 containing blocks like birch logs that did not exist before Beta 1.2, but we also know that this world was not played in beta 1.3. World 4 is saved using a scheme known as alpha. level format in beta 1.3, this format was replaced with a new way to save levels called MC region, since World 4 does not have MC region save data, we know it was only played in beta 1.2 versions.
We can explore this world, but we didn't find anything interesting right away. There is a very standard town with houses, statues and farms. There are a few bugs, but nothing too out of the ordinary. The chasm is sparsely populated with very little infrastructure overall. There's nothing really cursed in world 4. It seems pretty normal. In fact, however, the same cannot be said for the second world called bancha, there are four different bancha saves that represent a state of the level at four different points in time. We will call these snapshots by bands a, b, c and d, where a is the oldest known. save and D is the latest version, the first version is bban a, which was saved on March 19, 2011, it is almost identical to burban B, saved only 2 days later on March 21, let's load this into Minecraft Beta 1.3 and Let's explore, we meet in the middle. of the desert with no civilization in sight, but in our first moments on this strange world we notice that there are some abnormally sharp walls in the distant terrain.
This type of feature usually indicates that there was some type of change in the generation of the terrain being seen. most of the time after an update the sharp border delimits the old generation from the new one, let's walk in that direction, we don't see anything worth mentioning, we are still somewhere inside the desert, but after about 3 minutes, our character suddenly freezes without being able to progress, we can watch. but we are unable to move the mobs that are nearby, we are equally frozen, we leave and rejoin, we find ourselves in the same situation, as it turns out that we are actually trapped forever.
I haven't been able to find a way out in the game to escape this. soft lock, fortunately we can use external tools to move before doing so, however, let's take a look at this world in a beta 1.3 compatible mapping software, our player's coordinates are just outside of Civilization by editing the internal data of the player. We can move to the center of the city, but this does not free us from the trap, even if we reset the world and start again, we still freeze every time we approach the main settlement, it seems that there is something in this area that is to blame .
We can teleport to various locations, but it's still not immediately obvious what went wrong. This teleportation is a tedious way to explore the world, so let's bring it to a modern version of Minecraft with spectator mode. When we update the world to 1.16, we will find that the freezing issue no longer exists and we can fly around it. The world must have been played for a decent amount of time, as there is quite a bit of development near the city center. Mining operations have been carried out at great depths and many of the adjacent caves have been explored.
As we survey this site, we discover important landmarks: The hotel is a simple wooden structure with a fence surrounding it. This is supposedly the source of the cursed vines, but it seems completely normal. Nearby is an underground door with a sign indicating that this is the place. entrance to the Labyrinth of Doom this was also mentioned in the DM we know that the end of this tunnel is a new house built to escape the infestation effectively the canal leads to an igloo the existence of these land marks tell us that the first part The David's story occurred before the date of this file, which was March 21, 2011, and while it's fun to see what his friends were building, it's still unclear what's wrong with this world, the causes of the freeze.
They seem to have been fixed in modern Minecraft. So let's go back to the Minecraft beta. One thing we can try is to open this world in an old version of MC Edit, which is a Minecraft world editor. The controls are a little complicated, but we can do it without problems while flying. Once again, we don't see anything clearly Miss besides the regenerated fragments, but if we look closely enough, we'll eventually stumble upon something interesting in the MC edition. Translucent red blocks indicate entities that include objects such as mobs or items on the ground right next to them. the hotel there are some entity blocks that are dark red, there are several entities stacked in this same location, the MC edition does not show what these entities are, but we can teleport our player next to them and load the world, the speed of frames drops dramatically, but the game does not crash by looking in the direction of the infected block, we discover that it contains cows, it is not clear how many, but there are more than a couple, we can see that their mafia tags are text overlaid from multiple identification numbers, plus the shadow beneath them. is very dark, presumably due to the sum of several, that is, freezing occurs when these cow pockets are within the simulation distance.
We encountered this issue on both bban a and bban B, the latter of which was saved on Mar 21, 2011 at 3:21 PM. the next bancha C version was saved only 58 minutes later and when we loaded this world we found something very different, in fact, cows are everywhere, there are so many, hundreds and hundreds, a sea of cows, a boine suami, these cows suffocate to the Minecraft client. putting it on its knees, the frame rate drops to sub-whole levels cows and cows and cows and cows how many cows I'm not sure, but I do know that there are too many and an unnatural amount something is very, very wrong in this Minecraft world, can we open bban C and MC edit To get a better idea of this infestation, we find that it is densest near the hotel, the structure that David believes is the source of this world's problems, but the cows are not limited to this fenced area, they are have extended.
Due to the surrounding landscape making the nearby city uninhabitable, this distribution of cows leads to a logical theory, perhaps somehow the cow-infested blocks of bban A and B were disturbed, causing the rapid release of all of these cows on the nearby blocks and while the simulation freezes in my In the beta environment, it is actually possible to see this effect if we open the world in a later version of Minecraft when we enter the city, cows can be seen gushing out of some specific blocks, maybe something similar happened on the beta server, but how did it change in our search?
For Hints, we discovered that there is an intriguing file within the file, the server log, which contains a treasure trove of information telling us about player joining and server exits, restart commands and even chat messages, perhaps this will tell us. help to find out what happened between bban B. save and bban C save, so let's dig into the server log according to the logs. bban B's final save occurred at 321 p.m. on March 21st this is aligned with the creation date of the raar file immediately after the server starts a user named Eric logs in, we know that he is the one running the server since his username has the same IP address as the abandoning server.
The game after less than 2 minutes of play, the server stops right after at 3:24 p.m. then at 16:18 the server boots up again and Eric joins once again, this time he leaves after just 40 seconds. Eric stops the server at 4:19 p.m. and this is where bancha C is saved. This is very interesting in the time period after bban B's snap. AR played in the game for a total of 2 minutes and 29 seconds, but these 2 minutes had no impact because it was then when The nature of the spam entity completely changed from a few failed blocks to empty ones everywhere.
What happened during these few moments? Did Eric somehow cause this change or was he just there to observe it? This is the reason why he decided to make a backup of the continuous world. With the logs we find that the server starts up once again about 2 hours later. Now we are looking at events that occurred before saving bban D. The final snapshot of a user named Eric tries to join but has been IP banned. he tells us he's still Eric with an e and they use the console to unlock themselves, turning that account into a server operator in the process.
Eric sends some commands but eventually leaves, they log in a few more times, sometimesthey change their username and also use world. Edit presumably to build a new tower that will be seen by the city. It's also worth mentioning that bban is renamed World before the server launches on March 22. The reason for this is not obvious. If we open bban D, we discover that the cows have been replaced with feathers using MC Ed, we can see that they have spread to a wider region and have found their way to the forest and the lake. It's hard to say if the total number is different, but the fact that the entities have completely changed shape is. notable on March 27, 2011 at 4:55 p.m. the server closes for the

last

time the strange entities have defeated the players the burban server no longer exists now is a good time to take a step back and give an overview of what we found in this mysterious file there are saved snapshots of two worlds of the server at various points in time, world 4 has two partial snapshots, but does not contain anything especially strange bancha, however, it has four snapshots, each of which is strange in some way.
A and B both have dense cow blocks that cause the game to freeze. C has the cows uncompressed and filling the nearby landscape and bban D has the cows replaced with feathers. Our working theory is that the dense cow blocks seen in A and B were activated somehow, resulting in the mobs exploding out into the world and the effect can be seen in later versions, but up to this point we've been trying to understand what we have, we haven't even considered how these cows got here in the first place, unfortunately we don't. I don't have a backup of the world before the cows spawn, they are present in the first backup which is bbcha a, this means they were generated sometime between the initial creation of bancha and the time of the first copy security using the server. log we can see that burbano was first created immediately after the server was updated to Beta 1.3 on March 8, 2011 11.
According to our timeline, there were 11 days of play time before the first copy of security. Let's focus on this period of time to see if anything jumps out. To us using the timestamps of the chats we can find confirmations of the existence of certain landmarks such as the hotel was made by David G and was finished only 2 hours after the generation of bancha we know it from his triumphant message the hotel Mention of the tunnel or Canal is made for the first time on March 10 at 5:10 p.m. This is probably the same one connected to the door to the Maze of Doom.
We have reason to believe this because 45 minutes later, ARX diema mentions looking out the window of his igloo, confirming that it was completed sometime before this message, since the DM said that the Maze of Doom connected to the igloo probably exists. in this point. What's interesting is that the Log Show ARX Dima mentions building an igloo that same day, compare that to the DM saying that the Maze of Doom and the igloo were built for escape. The mob infestation in the chat has no reference to this, instead David is the one who says that he is moving away, not because of a technical problem, but because his hotel was afflicted by a player named Amed RX. .
Dema says they will make an igloo and then help. David's move, it is not clear if this igloo is for David or not, since the igloo was not designed to escape from glitches, it seems that we found a contradiction with the forum post, this logically leads to an important question: when were glitch mobs referenced for the first time? Any logs that find this will help us narrow down when these problems started, as with most Minecraft servers, angry or surprised mob chat messages are quite common, but on March 16 at 5:46 p.m. we find some messages that appear different David logs in and is surprised by the large number of zombies a zombie apocalypse as described by RX diema the players comment on the extreme lag a little later is the first reference to a damn structure friend come here there is something wrong with this structure it's evil, now I understand it, I understand how they spawn like this, they continue later look at this thing, this thing is full of evil mobs coming from there after a few minutes something else strange happens.
David logs out and logs back in. but the spawn point has changed, neither David nor RX diema know why these messages seem to suggest that mob spam first appears sometime around this time, so let's explore to see if there's anything more notable around this point 10 minutes before the zombie apocalypse. We found something intriguing at 5:34 p.m. the server boots in the burban world and then converts the map. This is strange. Let me explain why, near the beginning of the video, I talked about how the safe world level format changed between beta 1.2 and beta 1.3 if you loaded an old world in beta 1.3. it would automatically convert it to the new save format, but it's very strange that it's happening here.
We know that the bban world was created natively in beta 1.3, so there is no reason why it needs to be converted since it never used the previous level format. Why do we see logs of your conversion being backed up later in the log? We discovered something on March 18, 2011 at 3:57 p.m. The server boots using beta version 1.21 and instead of the default jar, the server starts using craft bucket. This is the only time this happens in the log file. The spawn area is ready but the log then fills up with error messages. David G and a user named lion L try to join but are immediately kicked out due to a stale server error.
This time the server reboots to Beta 1.3 and this is where we see the world converted, so this is what happened to the server. updated to Beta 1.3 including new MC region save format, admin decided to run bban using craft bucket instead of server default jar when admin used craft bucket beta 1.2, server didn't understand level format and instead it generated a new level. Using the old Alpha secure format, players who tried to join were kicked because they were running beta 1.3. They didn't know that the server had been downgraded to Beta 1.2. The server version was then changed back to beta 1.3.
The server program saw. that there was map data from the old format, so he converted that data to the MC region and as soon as the players logged in they saw the sacred mafia problems, there is additional evidence in favor of this interpretation, remember how the bban map has an edge where there are differences in fragment generation, what happened is that during the downgrade a new seed was generated for the world since beta version 1.2 did not recognize that a world existed; then in the update the server converted the generated terrain to the new format it also took the seed and applied it to the world overriding any previous seeds that existed that's why there are sharp edges on the terrain because the seed changed to whatever it was the 1.2 beta seed on the downgrade, presumably that's why the spawn changed too, the level conversion code was not designed for a situation where a world already existed and I think this is a possible explanation for what cursed the world, maybe this is the cause of the mob spam, but this doesn't completely answer everything, there is no specific evidence as to why the dense cow blocks appeared, but I think it is at least plausible that this demotion update sequence is the culprit, the mafia issues are not mentioned in the chat beforehand and as soon as the update was completed they are discussed, the timeline makes sense and we know the conversion code was working. in an unexpected way as it would normally never be run with the data saved from the pre-existing MC region, so unless someone comes up with a better idea this is my working theory, there are other things to talk about worth talking about if you look at the responses to the initial forum post there are several people saying this situation is fake, to be honest that was my initial thought when starting this project, someone ruined the world to do something intentionally creepy and there is a reason why they could have done this.
David sent the DM to faceless, but this person has another name, spicy shit 666, since it turns out he was actually a YouTuber covering mysterious things found in games, kind of like a certain person David DMed to spicy asking Help and Spicy posted it on a public forum, so that the community could help solve the

mystery

. Spicy initially made a video introducing the topic. It was released on July 11, 2014, the same day he made the forum post. The video is now deleted, but an archived version exists. However, the video does not appear. add a lot, it's mainly there just for people to help solve the mystery on November 15th.
Picante updated the forum post to say that the mystery had been solved, but nowhere could I find what the supposed solution is, there is no link to any kind of news. text containing a summary it also doesn't look like Spicy made an update video, unfortunately at this time all of Spicy's videos are deleted, however an archive page for his channel shows the initial video from July, but there is no video with the November Minecraft theme. A channel has been uploaded again. a mysterious undated Minecraft video, but it doesn't reference bban at all, searching through old forum posts doesn't turn up anything, so we don't really know what solution Spicy found, if any, maybe they found the same thing as me, but maybe not so much.
Instead, we are forced to draw our own conclusions. I don't think this map is fake. It seems to me that this file contains a server that actually existed and was in fact used by a group of friends in 2011. There are thousands of messages and while in theory all of this could be fabricated, it would take an enormous amount of work to achieve it, simply I don't think many will find it worth it, especially since Minecraft storylines didn't really exist in 2014. There are some things in the DM that don't quite match up. The unreasonable number of creepers does not appear to exist in the file.
Instead, they appear to be cows. Furthermore, the idea that the igloo was created to escape the mob swarm is not supported. It's backed up by evidence in the chat, but since they're both stories from 3 years before the DM, it's certainly possible that David is simply misremembering what happened in bancha, the core of his 2011 story seems to match the files, it's It's just that the minor details have it gets confusing, however I think they're probably embellishing their 2014 Scans, the random blue screen crashes they mentioned are plausible, although I couldn't replicate them, it's certainly possible they had a system setting that had problems running old beta versions. from a lot of cow mobs is obviously backed up by the files and most of the locations they mention are there too.
The obvious exception is the tomb made of quartz above the labyrinth. Frankly, it's just not there even if we load the world using 1.7. 10, the July 2014 version of Minecraft, there's just nothing like it anywhere I can find, maybe David felt the need to make a story a little juicier to increase Spicy's chances of seeing it. I'm not sure, but according to my research, there is nothing like a tomb of questions anywhere. This is a Minecraft mystery that has been simmering for about a decade and was almost forgotten forever. It's pretty deep into the iceberg of Minecraft's dark mysteries, especially for the English-speaking player base.
It's fun to dive into this topic, ironically this idea was DM'd to me and I want to thank you for showing me this mystery. They also helped me with some of the translation. I shouldn't need to say this, but please don't. harass any of the people mentioned in this video. I must also warn you that the logs in the file contain extremely NSFW language and as always I make no guarantees as to the safety of the files I mentioned today if you wish. download them, download them at your own risk, let me know in the comments what you think, did you enjoy the video?
Did I miss something? I'm looking forward to hearing from you and if you enjoyed our time together, don't hesitate to subscribe, it really helps. Let me know this has been Retro Gaming. Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you all in the next video. Have a great day.
