We'll be back to recap things sometime when you're watching the mhsaa Network championship. We hope you enjoyed our coverage of the division three and four wrestling championships next year. See you on our news site, Joe. Lewis Arena in downtown Detroit for our team at Blue Sky Productions I'm Mark Crawford, so for all the foreigners, it's the oldest sport in the world and in this country, perhaps the most misunderstood, it's true wrestling imposes demands incomparable to young athletes, while other sports talk about dedication and determination in wrestling those attributes may not be enough strength technical speed fighters must develop all three through a relentless regimen of physical and mental conditioning understand that in this sport even Failure has its rewards because the road to greatness is often paved with feats that galvanize the hearts of future champions.
Yes, success on the mat is not easy, perhaps that is why the sport demands so much respect from within. Because victory in wrestling does not simply mean conquering an opponent, but pushing yourself beyond expectations, why do young people train so hard? to compete in a sport that is cherished by so few, unless you have raised your hand at Victory, you may never understand that we are in Menomonee, where this afternoon we will crown 14 new State Wrestling champions. I'm Scott Fury and together with Teen Wolf. It will be our pleasure again to bring you all the action face to face.
Today's broadcast is brought to you by Nelson Chevy's editorial paper division, your trouble-free dealer. Top-notch engineering and manufacturing from Marinette, Michigan's united dairy industry, and by These Fine Menominee area businesses so let's get to the action first of all 103 pounds, we have a couple of outstanding freshmen, the number favorite one Munising's Paul Sadler is 33-3 on the year and Escanaba's No. 2 seed Jason McCuskey also has 30 wins on the season against seven losses to get here. Sadler had a major decision over Eric Myron, the number four seed from Gladstone, while McCuskey beat three seed Luke Mott of Norway.
They have fought three times this year. Sadler won twice. It has to be a big advantage, well that really has to help Sadler get into this match once. I think he covered it earlier this year, so he's like, "Hey, I did it before I could do it again here in the finals," but on the other hand. hand mccuskey the numbers are in his favor maybe his number is up tonight and he will get the big win Sandler right away with a nice deep double right here he knocks him down hits his two points from referee Dave gonya pretty physical start for three pawns leaves I you I say it and look at the size difference, we might want to point that out right away.
Sadler is much taller than McCuskey and leverage is a big factor in wrestling. Yes, sometimes you know that as a coach you will want to take advantage of leverage. strength, but look at McCuskey, he's short and stocky, he has a lot of power in his own body, right there, the sailor who is pressing right now is in his bell and here comes McCuskey, he kind of got in a bad position, he stayed lying on McCuskey's belly. he almost goes in for the reversal, now he's got his arm trapped under him and he's got the ball right here Scott and he's in serious trouble when Sandler comes over and puts his head forward wow, he's got him hooked there, I think it's going to end well. here in the first period Scott has him in big trouble here comes McCuskey now they're going to catch him again you readjust the chair, readjust and he's on his back, all good, my husky is really fighting hard to get off his back.
Sadler's got us just a little high, though he needs to adjust, he could finish it right here, boy, what an inauspicious start for Jason McCuskey, here we go, he's fighting for his back, but he's dug himself a hole. Five nothing in the first period. He won't give up. he's going to fight back, he's very Scrappy, he's going to finish this match strong, well look at Sadler getting back to work now that he's back and working those arms. Look, the pressure he has there brings him back to his core, a lot of pressure. keeping him face down and again here he goes again he's getting high but he's working again to almost fall boy he doesn't stop he's trying to turn him one more time here in the first period we're going down for a short time but right now he's really trying to get better half, get him out of your fall and it looks like the period ends well and that's it and Sandra will have a big five to nothing lead so as the second period begins McCuskey has to make a good start on the way back.
You see his face right there, she had to look him in the eyes and she immediately takes Samuel to her back and she did it, you have two comments, he has to put his hips in and come out on her back. He gets a few more points here if he can get him off his hips, he could get back to a near fall situation, but Sadler doesn't look like he's going to explode into dust, he rips his head off, so luckily he escapes, he's up five nothing, almost got stuck, but now. he's 7-4 and now he's back, I didn't even bother him, he's back in front, he's going to try to get close to the fall again, but he's exposed himself to the man, he's got to be careful, McCuskey's not going to lie down here .
Let's now move into the third period and Sadler has taken a commanding 12-5 lead and he's reallylooking to put it aside, he's not staying still, look at McCuskey right here on Sadler started to lower his head, throws the headlock and tries to catch him. at his back Sandler with all the confidence in the world right now he's moving forward and now he's got my clients back and I could finish it here boy, that was maybe Jason's last break now he's on his back again quite disappointed there now they're going To stop him, There will be a near fall of four points that will leave him 16-5 outside 16-7 Paul Sadler, the top champion.
We have an interesting story at 112-pound senior against The Freshman, senior, number one seed Adam Munising Jared. Bowerman 32-3 on the year he will face Jason Gothier, the powerful freshman from Ishmael 27 wins just three losses to get here. Barrowman took an 8-2 decision against number four seed Ryan Rezinski of Escanaba, while Gothier fights his way to the Finals over Brian Utke of Menominee, so we have experience versus young guys winning that battle. I would say most of the time you will go with the experienced guy when you have a freshman in the finals, he has nothing to lose here. he can let it all hang out and go for it where you would think Bowerman might be a little more hesitant and not go after it every time, well we've had some really good looking freshmen we're only two games in and we.
I've already had three freshmen, yeah, it's really amazing in the finals so far. A lot of times you'll find freshmen wrestling at lighter weights, but we've got three guys who have really done a fantastic job and check out Gothia right here. boy, he's very well armed, that says a lot about where wrestling is headed when we have some handsome freshmen like that and now Barman goes on the attack, yes he goes on the attack, he had a good advantage with the crossed arm, but he sat alone. on the hip and he's going to have to be careful in that situation, he doesn't want to get caught underneath and here he goes again, but he just pushes it and comes out with a kind of Kelly and gets the single leg takedown. he immediately into gothian and here he carries it on his back and maybe he'll get a two count.
The referee says no, but he's still working towards a near fall. Obama is definitely in control here now that he is going to run cross-body. Come out the other side and try the old Banana Split, but Gothier shows up and catches a leg, yes he's got his arm on the inside, he could pull off a reversal, but the period is running out, we'll move on to the second period now and Bowerman chooses the La low position try to reach the top and catch some points near the drop. He got out of position. He allowed an easy reversal for Bower and slid right behind.
Well, Bowerman is the captain of his team and has a lot of respect. just from his coach and teammates, but also from the community, a wonderful young man means a lot to our program, when I can get someone like that, it's a coach's dream to have someone like that in his program, obviously, the coach mutters , you will really regret seeing it. His captain is Jared Barman, who is now very excited about Jason Gothier, yes, he has very good hip control, he keeps his hips high on the guy, he has his leg forward, there you go, he really works on placing that arm and Behind the back. and maybe try to get a guillotine, but nothing's really happening here, maybe I should get to a stalemate, well we'll move on to the third period now and, uh, Bowerman now up four nothing and here comes what a nice shot from Gotham.
He was going to give up, he really went in deep, used his strength and took him down to get the two points. Well, you like to see that he doesn't back down. We're in the third period, but he has the takedown on the outside and now we'll move on to the third period. period six in the lead, they are in neutral position and let's see what happened there, if he can close the gap, he will get behind for two Scoops right behind, he has to find something big here on the edge. at the end of the match and again Bowerman, kneeling, is almost caught and pulled back, but when he got to the front, he was fighting to get behind him, he needs to step forward and get his arm out of the front, he will do it. his two-point takedown is there, but the Bowerman kid almost gets caught in the hip again, but now they're 6'4 and there's just not enough time for the freshman to get him out, the horn is heard and you see the championship finally for Jared.
Barman, a 6-4 win over Jason Godfrey, dropping to 119. We have a pair of Crosstown Rivals number one seeds, Rick Ryan of Norway, 35-3 on the year he will take on his neighbor, senior from Iron Mountain, B.J Moore, 33 and 10. These guys have fought quite often all year to get here. Wright beats number four seed John Larson in a close two-on-one match, while more defeated number two seed Brad Elliott just 18 seconds into the first period, so we have a pair of seniors they faced each other here when we started the action at the beginning of the first period, yeah, both guys know how important it is to fight in this game and go out and win and right here, Moore almost makes the same move that uh. yeah that's the same move now 15 seconds come out and he's going to get the two points so he's going to come out front he really got deep into that high crotch he lifted him up in the air and brought him down to the mat and made sure he got his two points, now let's move on to later in the first period, Rick Wright is still on top, he's still on top on the scoreboard and two nothing, and let's see if he can maintain this lead, now more is coming, he's going to sit here.
Yes, he's trying to make some kind of change and, you see, he's trying to make a new change, but he's actually not in a very good position. Moore will try to step up and get him on his back, maybe close. fall here boy Scott, he's not panicking at all, a lot of guys would have run away from here a long time ago and you can bet his coach could be saying the same thing, maybe you should give up, go to your base and work from there. Maybe he gives up too, but the Wright kid shows a lot of patience, a lot of self-confidence and is once again the best at catching that arm and puts Moore back on his stomach and as we get closer to the end of the first period here I tell you what they are, he was close to giving up, almost not just the reversal, but almost falling there and he uh, keep the pressure, yeah, keep the hip pressure and he will last the period and go into the second period with a lead of two and nothing.
Now let's move on to the third period, it's still a score of two and nothing. Nothing happens in the second. period, just a lot of this type of action, more trying to get out but controlling things with uh really his leg, his leg, his ability to walk, yeah, he's really sitting tight on the hip trying to hold on to it to see more immediately making a shoulder. he rolls into a switch, but he's lying on his side too much and that allows him to get that leg in and we see here that he's going to try to work some kind of tilt, uh, throw it with his legs, he's got a bar arm.
He's going to work for a near fall, but he's really got his hips planted on the mat once again, like he's wrestling with his back, now he's going to get that heel in and try to open it up right here and more rolls into him, uh , No. I don't know, I think he definitely got a two call and almost got turned over again, but now he doesn't panic again and comes out, extended his lead to four nothing and we're right at the end of the period, the end of the game and it's Lo we'll see unless something happens here, it looks like it's Rick Wright, the top champion at 119 pounds, a four way win over B.J Moore, welcome back to Menominee, we're going to resume action at 125 pounds, we have another upperclassman year versus freshman, but this time freshman, No. 1 seed Dan Maloney of 30-6 Escanaba on the year will face 28-5 senior Jason Lafave out of Gladstone to get here.
Maloney had a 6-3 decision over West's Jason Waligurski. Iron County, while Lafave beat number six seed Todd Duboor in Nagani two to one last time, experience prevailed over youth, let's see what happens this time. Well, I'll tell you who Lafave is. He has been in the top tournament three years before this. He won it as a freshman and, boy, you'd think his experience would get him through this match. He also has 114 career wins from him, so it's a really interesting story and he gets in deep right away, but Maloney. With upper body strength he fought his way out of there and look here, he's going to finish a nice double turn in the corner.
Russ percolo is still aiming for the takedown, let's resume the action now in the third period. There's been a lot of training, uh no. scores, but here Maloney immediately comes off the bat in the third period, moves his lead to three nothing, yeah, jumps to his feet, good hand position, fights to get out of it and here you see him struggling on the shot, it catches with his arm in the air and puts him on his back Scott, I don't know how the favorite got caught, I thought Lafayette was going to have a takedown there, but he gets caught with his arm up and he's damn just doing it. he calls, it's a five point move and that will increase the lead to, at this point, eight to nothing.
There are Russ Percolosi's three and you can see the favorite here. He escapes and makes it 8-1. That really has to be it. disheartening in that situation because the favorite you are on the scoreboard gets thrown onto your back and now you really have to dig a deep hole and you have to defend yourself and try and probably get a shot here, well now we'll move on late to the third period Maloney great standing you saw him release Lafave a little earlier they are still standing he likes to fight in neutral now here he comes deep and favorite Sheila here he has a double hook, you know he is trying to do some kind of throw, try to put something together , put Maloney on his back, that's the only hope he has tonight and Maloney falls to the left, a deep double takes him to the Matton boy, it's all over right now and, uh, Jason Laflave unfortunately knows it.
It's a 10-1 decision right now and we're at the end of the period and it'll probably end that way. There is no hope left for Jason Lafave. A great career ends, but the new guard may have taken over. 125 Dan Maloney, the champion in motion. Now at 130 pounds we have another senior wrestler from Escanaba, Tim Connelly, going 36-4 on the year as he takes on another senior from Westwood High School in Ishma Maine, Dustin Abraham, who comes with a 33-6 record to get here safely. He beats Norway's Scott Skoog in a close match 7-4, while Abraham had no trouble with third-seed Matt Leighton of Iron Mountain 10-1 in the final.
There you look at these two guys, it's almost like looking in a mirror. The structure itself is almost identical. Yes, I think we are going to have a great game here in the final. Scott, these two older guys really want to get out there and chase it and they're both pretty good on their feet as well as we pick up the action. At the end of the first period you see right at the end of the fight, there is Tim Connelly with the points and the takedown. The unusual Canadian story didn't start wrestling until his freshman year.
Mrs. spent the entire second year with an injury, but she stayed there. and here he is in the finals he has the package he's a good athlete he's tenacious he's a really tough kid he's an honor roll student uh he leads by example and he also leads with his uh he just has a genuine heart in the solidifier of a The team of wrestling he's a silent guy, he lets his wrestling do the talking and right now he's in control, two nothing on Dustin Abraham, look at Abraham here. Camille is really trying to keep good pressure up top.
Abraham comes underneath, if he gets his arm through he's going to escape there it looks like he's doing some kind of Granby turn here but he gets caught on her hip and Camille sinks Hibbs hits him back and then stops to move towards him Tim Connelly still he's in control two nothing here and we're getting close to the end of In the period he could get some points here and if Abraham throws his arm up, he'll be able to escape there, but Camille with a lot of pressure on her upper body forced her hips and your chest down towards your hips and swim there, we'll move down.
In the third period, it's a 2-1 score. Abraham was awarded a penalty point due to him stopping Tim Connelly from the top position I might add, but now Tim Connelly is trying to boost his checkers in the bottom position, it's easy to score down there, let's see what. Abraham can set himself up well, he really has to try to take down Connelly down here, he looks like he's going to fall, he looks like he's falling to try to get a close up view or a spear rest, he needs to get his head to the side and get a lot of it. further. pressure there almost able to get up and free himself he had nothing, no, no weight on him and I was going to try to throw him, he is going to get in trouble, wow, he comes up with a desperate shot at the point wherewhich doesn't.
She doesn't need the match, she's only losing by two, she goes right behind her back and really puts Camille in the driver's seat, but what a difference, all of a sudden it's eight to one, so the five point move really is the difference which Tim Connelly wins. is 8-2 the final score at 135 pounds, we have the first weight class where the number one seed failed to pass us, that is because of this guy, Shannon Matheson, from Marquette, who will enter the championship fight 24- 5 confronting Josh. mayodata Escanaba, a junior who is 27 years old and 10 in the year to get here, Matheson had the big surprise: the number four seed took suda against uh Newberry and a 5-3 decision while mayet was pinning the sixth seed , Jared Hoy, off the win at 132. so we'll pick up the action at the beginning of the second period, it was a scoreless first period, it's really been a couple of guys that really know each other, yeah, it was set up to be a great game , both guys have met each other twice, now Matheson won a May at 1-1 and they're really looking for it again here tonight, so Matheson walks up and walks away and looks.
Oh, I thought we were going to get a headlock from the Escanaba wrestler, but Matheson. comes in behind scores two, yeah, stands up and gets good hand control, comes out right away and throws a middle right here, he's going to work for the takedown right now, he jumps even though he's going to drag me out and he still has hands through the cracks now that he's gone, so he's got me into some trouble right now, but he really needs to settle in here, put his chest on top and work for that pin, you see angrily, heading back to the area outside limits, uh, very smart of you, but let's see what Matheson can do.
He will drag him back. He looks like he again changed his movements now to a front headlock position. Yes, he let go of the arm and you can see him trying to drag the man back inside. Mat, he's got a lot of pressure on his head here, boy, if he adjusts, he's really got himself into some serious trouble and let's see if they can complete and there's a ball, so Shannon Mathis, at number four, completes it and has cattle. the EP championship at 2 57. It's a big surprise that the number four seed wins here at 135. You see him congratulating the Escanaba coaches and there he reaches out to his own coaches, a happy Shannon Matheson and he should be because this is a great fall, tell us what is happening here, well he knows exactly where he is in the match, right here he knows that mayat is out and if he wants to pin him here, he has to drag him in very patiently, he pushes him in.
There is a lot of time left in the boy period, he has a lot of pressure on his head, he is using his head like a pole back and forth and here he readjusts his chest right on the man's chest, adjusting himself and he is going to fall, he raises his head . up and there's Dave gone before he comes back welcome back to Menominee it's time for the 140 pound weight class this will feature a defending champion Nathan Todd just one win at the junior penthouse 38-5 in the year he faces Brandon Rutter. Kingsford senior, who is 23-9, an unusual situation in this weight class to reach the final, Todd had to beat his own teammate John Grant 19-5 to score, while Rudder, the top seed number three, eliminated the number two seed.
Nominee Todd's Bob Rue card will be in the simple black and gold on the right of the screen and here's a guy who really likes to fight on his feet, yeah he's really been doing a great job all year, you can expect to see a There's a lot of action here in the final with him right away, very fast, look at him right away, between the legs, go out the back door looking for a takedown, you have to go up and there he has his two right away, Scott , so Nathan Todd comes out. the first two nothing and just like that Brandon Rutter escapes.
I don't know if that was an escape or more. Todd was just careful to let it go well. Sometimes you feel like a guy is running away when you're so confident on your feet. instead of fighting let him start over with another shot uh the Nathan Todd part really likes standing flat and wants the fighter to come to him you know he's good at shooting standing up too but he likes to leave that a guy stands on his legs, he has no problem with that, he has very good hip control, very good body control and he will take a guy down when he is on his own legs, so he has a lot of confidence in his feet and it's I'm going to make it work here from now on I think ear to ear now Rudder doesn't like that situation so he comes back he tries a shot that's pretty deep here on the leg, all he has to do is a little circle. but Tyler just slams his hips into him like he was talking, slams his hips, comes around from behind and gets another takedown, making it a 4-1 score, now Nathan Todd is in front, getting a little high right here this.
I have to be careful, maybe Granby or Jim Tillson will call him potentially dangerous, let's move on to later in the first period. Todd has increased his lead to six to one, he was about to fall and there goes Rudder back on his feet. Don't know. I know he's pretty fast, he had a good hand fighting there and he got away right away, he gets taken down here Scott, he's back in the fight, but Todd with a cross arm and grabs the rifles and I think yeah, Rudder got hurt. back and that will be the end of the period it's eight to two, we'll now move on to the second period Nathan Todd has increased his lead to ten to four uh, Rudder has really been favoring his back, as he heard at the end of the period. first period there and it really affected him a little bit, but here comes Nathan Todd again, well I'll tell you when you have a bad back and you have a guy in your legs shooting a takedown, it's very hard to go down and it's hard to get out of there. and it probably affected him at this time.
You saw him come out of there when Top is in deep and I hope he can finish the match and fight well and have a good performance here, well, once again, an escape for helm and here. Nathan Todd comes along, he's relentless, look how he's just digging his hips under here, he's got his hips right under him, he picks it up, he comes up behind him, he's got it up to his back, there's the period, let's fast forward now to the end of the third period , it's all been Nathan Todd. He currently has eight takedowns in the match, he just gave up another Escape, so he's been taking him down, letting him go throughout the match and you know what wrestling is, the bottom line is you're supposed to try to pin the guy Yes, but you can.
Look Todd, it's not just that he's not Showboat and he's letting the guy, uh, let him up, take him down, he's not a real fancy guy, but he's working on trying to get takedowns here, maybe he's going for the technical fall , you may not be able to immobilize him. but here you see Rudder in a nice fireman's charge at the end of the period where he rears his head here, he could get some near falls, maybe get the pin out. I don't know, he takes. Nathan Todd came back late in the match and I don't think there's going to be the moment, although there's not enough time for the pin, but I think a good finish for Brandon Rutter, he has to feel good about himself, he gets four of his own points to become the final champion Nathan Todd U.P 20-12 again. at 145 we have another returning champion, David Felger, just a sophomore from West Irons Counties 34-1, his only loss to Travis, eighth, a wrestler from Bayport, will face Jesse's Pasco, the senior from Westwood , which arrives with a 31-7. record of reaching the finals it seems this felger beat Josh Seitz of munising 11-3 that score while Pasco was shutting out third seed Joe Royer of Escanaba we will resume action early in the first period felger in the Pasco blue and red jersey, already You know, Scott, we like him, we have a fighter here in Pilger who likes to move on his feet and he has pretty good quickness, good ankle, you see it from the beginning, here the guys will say Pascal, he is also very long. a lot of leverage and he really likes to use his leg when he rides on top, so let's look for that later in the match, you know, Felger, who is trained by his father, just saw Doug Felger there and that creates a very interesting relationship with David.
He is an unassuming young man and is very motivated, so David is very easy to train. Our father-son relationship hasn't gotten in the way of anything at all. Well, back to action. Here you see that David Felger has increased his lead. at four to two when he goes for more he is working the duck underneath he did not get penetration he returns immediately he does a small chain fight he hits the carry of a fireman and achieves another takedown he moves up 6-2 in the boy of the match, it really shows great the wrestlers are so good on their feet now here goes Felger off to a quick start he's up 6-2 and could end this early well you can see he's trying to take down Pasco he's got a double inside wrister but he's not. slamming his hips into the mat, you have to take him down, get some good pressure on the hip and try to wear him down, but he's not doing that right now, he's like on a Navy trip right here and the period will be over, let's move on. in the game and out of the second half 7-2 felger started down this period he has escaped they are back on their feet where he likes to be victorious he is a little down with one hand on the mat moving around trying to work as quickly as possible and here , Pasco comes close and almost falls here, this will get him back into the game.
Scott like that, the Gap closed, it was 7-2, there's a four-point move, it's seven. to six and felger looks a little dazed. I'll tell you it doesn't take long to get back in the game and now Pasco has the legs, he's working on the arm right now, well you talked about this guy liking it. to ride the legs he might be about to fall over and I hope he doesn't, he won't be able to turn it there, he really keeps his hips up and never gets nervous when he has those legs on uh boy, he's turning, aren't he trying? to finish with the lady doing what she can to get her on her back trying to cross the body right here working really hard let's move on now to the end of the third period it's a great match Felder maintains a 9-8 lead this one It's really been a surprise, you can really feel the tension building here and there is Pascal trying to slide behind needs to get him down to the mat to get his two point takedown, he still has nothing, Scott and there he is. about two points all he needs to do is hold on for the champion Jesse Pasco takes the first lead of the match at the end of the period 10-9 is the lead Pasco can overcome it and take the championship at 145 10-9 for the third weight class in a row We have another defending champion this time it is Bull Baumgardner undefeated in the year 36-0 won two undefeated fighters in the tournament.
He will face Escanaba's Pete McGuigan, a senior who is 28-3. Take a look at how they made it to the finals. Baumgardner, of course, the top seed beats Brent Hill, number five, nine to one, while McGuigan pins Bruce outside Gwyn at 2 41. A bit of revenge in this match as we get back to it. in the second period with no score because Bumgardner beat John McGuigan last year to win the title and that is of course Pete's older brother, yeah you're going to think Pete wants to come back, he's trying to get revenge on his brother right here, Hey, Bumgarner. he goes a little crazy with McQueen coming from Reversal baumgarner in quicksand and he goes back to work behind another motivating factor for Pete mcwig and he has 99 games for the year, one less than 100 and he's going to do everything he can to get it today, That's how I'm sure it would be. a great way to end his fighting career, but he's going to have to get something going right here.
Baumgarner rides with a very tight waist keeping a lot of pressure on him. McGuigan has to make a couple of moves together throughout this tournament. He has spread himself too thin here. almost makes up points against him, he really has to watch his hips, he's overextending himself, but he could show up here for a few points, so I was going to say throughout this entire tournament, Bull Baumgarner, one of the most physical wrestlers in the tournament, yeah . he likes to press a lot and, like you said, be very physical, throw at a guy and let him know who's in charge of the game as we finish the beginning of the third period.
Baumgardner chose the neutral position, let's see. If he can make him pay, he has a three-quarter Nelson in front and gets behind for the first points of the match, you know Peter started with a good shot but he got his head on the mat, huh, kind of Bumgarner's room. Nelson just pushed him behind him and knocked him down, but it could be a 2-0 fight right here Scott, the way these guys fight they're so close, no one is willing to make the big mistake, well they fought four minutes and 10 seconds of fight without goals. before the first takedown of the match now it looks like baumgarn is trying to use a Tails here a bit Pete is trying to work out trying to use some kind of switch but he definitely has to clear his arms there is no way the bomb iron will let him loose in that, you see he has to work them behind his back, he's not really maintaining a lot of pressureabout him he needs to get off his knees and really work the pressure on mcguigan well mcguigan might have a little different story because he's been down a lot and of course he's got that bad arm and that doesn't help at all and I don't think he doesn't Go let that bother you Scott, he's a pretty tough fighter, a pretty strong kid physically and he has to do something.
To put something together because he has the ability to come back and win, well, it looks like Baumgarner is starting to get a little tired, but he still has that great hip press on the downswing against McGuigan, let's see, try to get a turn here, yeah. He's a little sloppy, he doesn't want to go out and make a move like that and give up cheap points, but Wiggin sits down, looks, the clock knows it's ticking, he stands up and here he gets a point, so that's a good job. On his part, well, how many times has he come down to a takedown to win a mansion right on the attack?
Pete McGuigan but Oh will come up short and in comes Bond Gardner to take a 4-1 lead now and that will be tough for Pete. McGuigan is aggressive again, yeah it looks like he's hooking up a Granby here, though Scott, wow, Mom Garden was getting a little high, but let's take a chance on catching up with the Crocs working for a Granby, but he doesn't good. it's about to end in Pete McGuigan's career here it is 4-1 Beau Baumgartner defends his title there it's for the second year in a row and this year he finishes undefeated at 37-0 welcome back to Menominee we're starting to work our way up for the big guys we will be at 160 here our first senior negoni contestant Phil Vanney who is 35 and 10 years old the year he will face his old nemesis Matt Baker a junior from Gwen Matt has 36 wins and only three losses .
The season to get here, vanity, the number four seed eliminated first seed Gary Anderson of Iron Mountain 12-7 with that score, while Baker beat Dale Morrison, the sixth seed of Munising, by a fall in 2 48. Baker To the right of the screen, the black t-shirt and black socks. I would be very surprised to see much action here at the beginning of the fight. Scott, these guys have fought each other a few times. I think they'll be out there, feeling each other out. a little bit as soon as I say Vanny shoots, Baker rushes in behind, still no takedown, picks him up, squats and picks him up, takes him off the mat and now he has his two points, well these guys have met each other , as you said. several times this year and they are familiar with each other's style, both very, very strong and when you have two like the Rams clashing, I would say that's what we're going to have in this game, it's the two guys fighting for position.
Let's move forward now to the second period Matt Baker picked, he managed to escape and that brings us to our current score of three-nothing, you know, you talked about gladiators a little earlier, Scott, I'm a little interested, a vanity was a 103-pound weight when he was a freshman now he's at 160 and he was really well built and he's really come a long way since he started and doing well now he's got his work cut out for him as Matt Baker gets another takedown to go up five nothing but results. Phil up front, he's got something going here, yeah, it looks like he's trying to do a front lock here.
Baker is clinging to his arm. Manny has to do something to get the arm off of him. He can't just sit there and pull and pull. Right here he tries to roll and maybe catch Baker on his back. He has his head trapped underneath him. Baker is still hanging. Vany has to get up from her knees and try to get away from him. Baker is still in control according to referee George Pond. He will back up and get behind Danny again, although when trying to do a sit-up he looks like he is looking towards the corner asking his trainer for a little help.
Acres Scoops moves back behind Manny. maybe one or two moves together, let's move on now to the beginning of the third period, man, he's got a fight, he's down five, nothing, you see, if you're working for a quick tilt, here he cuts it off with the whistle, looks like possibly George Pond got a two count and yes he does, he's now 7-0 and he's trying to tip it up again, that's really going to put Phil Vani into panic mode and it looks like he put some fire under Matt Baker as He was going for a half there to try to get another turn, but Phil Vanney defends that he looks like he almost feels a death, he turns it over once, he thinks he can do it twice, but now Vanity is back on the offensive trying to score some moves, sit outside, roll, he's trying to get all his tricks out of his bag and in the end score some points here, the guy Matt Baker is just choking Phil Vani right now, he can't really do anything.
Seven, nothing, the score is good in the third period, and Baker continues. win 7-1 the final film Nine at 171 pounds we have the returning champion in this wave class and the wrestler with the most wins in the tournament 39 wins Brian Baker, a Marquette senior, will face Don Rickley, too a senior from Saint Agnes who is 35 and 5 on the year to get here Baker, the top seed of course, beat Joe Toloski and no problem, pin him at 4 14, while Rickley went into overtime with second seed Alan Staselasquez of Escanaba, so it's Ricky and Baker will resume action early. in the first period Baker on top of the two swims with the first takedown of the match you can see Baker immediately has Rickly knocked down to his belly here he is working his arm behind his back he goes halfway he turns him on his back but Rickly appears , he's going to play catch Baker here upside down and the creators who are about to go down squirm somehow get back on top and no points are scored in that situation, boy have you seen Baker a couple of times in our Marquette Challenge broadcasts and you know, it looks like he's in trouble, but he keeps working and he never seems to get caught and here he is, back on top, still two, nothing, now he's working on Tilt, he's working on Tilt here, it seems who is going to try to get closer to the fall. has him in a pretty bad situation, look, the referee attacked you, counting, it's hard to see his back here, but all day, I mean, not all day, but a couple of times I've seen Ricken in trouble and he always fight.
Just when you think you're going to catch him, boom, he comes out and here he does it again and goes back to his base. Well, he'll give up three there, so put Baker five up. Nothing, yeah, let's move on to the second period now. Brian Baker picks the low position and let's see what Rickly can do if he can get Baker a turn here. You know Ricky was in the finals last year against a wrestler from Marquette. Andy Man, he came up a little short last year, but it seems. like he's really working hard this year, he wants it, he wants to be champion and not be defeated by Marquette again, well, here Baker comes out the back door again and that will improve his lead to seven, he just turns to get behind the The back goes to the middle, I think it's hip to hip here.
He'll have to go to the side but he pulls, pulls his legs here on a vine, he's got him in big trouble right here, Scott, well, I'm telling you, they take turns every time as often as this and you have to start wondering here. but he squirms again but now Baker is up 10 nothing and wow this game is quickly getting out of hand well we'll move on now to uh later in the second period it's 10 nothing Baker up let's see where Let's go from here, you know? Ripley is also a very strong kid, he has a good physique, he needs to get up and do something, he will probably try to make a shot and get maybe five points and get back in the game that he is looking for. yeah, he goes for the headlock, Baker again with the half put on his hip oh man, I don't know if we get out of this, well, it looks like he was going to be in trouble all of a sudden now that he has Ripley on his back, goes for the three point near fall, possibly for the pin right here, I just want it to look like Rickley was going to throw in the headlock.
Baker comes up with another move that puts Rickley on his back and this is going to be at least 13-nothing unless he falls, but you see Rickly up on those elbows, really the elbows and neck are preventing these shoulders from touching the mat and Baker let's see if we can get it flat, yeah, I don't know, I didn't have my hips up. at the top yes Baker continues the 15-0 technical fall to win his second straight title now at 189 pounds we have local boy Nash Myers out of a nominee he is a junior and 32 wins four losses in the year he faces Jason Zodunik of Marquette, also a junior, is 22-9 to reach the final.
Myers, the number one seed, defeated Kelly Castor, who was sitting at 15-6, who scored a dunik, taking down the number two seed, Eric Nellette of Newberry, with a fall. at 5 12. Both guys are good together, maybe the two best physiques in the tournament, Tim, yes, I think there will be a lot of pushing and throwing during this match. These guys are really like you said, they're both good together. I've already wrestled once this year in the conference and uh, it's going to be a really interesting match here, well we've said it before, but you see you imagine the Rams locking horns and that's what these guys, well, here Nash Myers is coming, now I'll tell you.
You, Myers, but very, very quickly, with his arm crossed, he lowered the zunik, let him go immediately. I think he believes that he has a lot of confidence in the leg, it seems that he is a dunik, it was a little more. ready, this time he's still extended, he returns his hips where he'll be taken down again, right off the bat Nash Myers shows excellent speed, he's a little shorter than Zedunic and so far it's easy to get under him, yeah. what he's doing he's going to have to move his feet he's going to be standing flat footed here these two guys need to move a little otherwise they're going to get caught in a quick shot at each other there well they're doing a little hand . fighting right now, headbutts and hand fights, not much action, they are both trying to feel each other again, uh, no one wants to make a mistake here, they know their opponent is very strong and if they go deep, it will be a good takedown .
Myers has a 2-1 lead, you saw the takedown and he immediately broke free and here comes the dunik on the attack, exactly the same thing, well, you talk about a couple of guys that are very fast, three on three, like that, let's move on now At the end of the third period, there have been a lot of the same buttons, a lot of manual control, fighting for manual control, it's 6-6, each fighter has been penalized twice for stopping, so that's been the type of fight, yes, it's getting late in the fight, here you can. look there, Meyer is looking at the clock, nobody wants to make the mistake at the end of the game.
I think maybe they'll just try to hold on. Go to overtime, first point in one. Well, you hear the crowd chaffing the Dooney. hometown gym having a surprise Nash Myers kinda trying to throw an underhook maybe get a call from Stalin I don't know one of these guys has to make something happen here at the end of the match looks like 15 seconds left like it's overtime, you can see it again here, they're both tied up, there's a takedown right at the end of the match for Nash Myers, the local boy, and Zidunik tries to get out of bounds.
Myers looks at the clock and he has the lead six and only one second left and how disappointed Jason Zaduna is. He made the aggressive mistake but couldn't finish the takedown. Yes, he was the one who tried right at the end, but it cost him and Mass Myers with the championship well, that will make it an 8-6 final Nash Myers, the UK champion at 189 and we will return from the nominee after these words from our foreign sponsor from Norway, he is a 34-2 senior in the year he faces Dan Ross of Marquette, also a senior, he has one more win 35-3, he is also a senior to get here.
Apricorn defeated last year's 215-pound champion, Jason King of Escanaba, 7-4, while Ross defeated Munising's three-seat perksetic. 11-4, so here we go to 2 15. once again, the top two seeds half a ricorn one Ross number two we have seen the meaning of the top two seeds in quite a few brackets today yes, we have seen it a few times today Scott and I We know it. Many people are eager to see this fight. They haven't fought each other this year, and in fact it's been a couple of years, but Ross is itching to get a little revenge on his half-corner and you see. right here Capricorn in the neck and the neck falls towards a just try to pick it up and we have a stoppage here Scott, let's see what's going on here it's a technical violation apparently against Haverkorn interesting that substitute official Russ percolosi makes this call I think it's a violation with a helmet that grabs the head and that's exactly why they have two officials on the mat, Scott, if one guy isn't in the right position to see it, they have the other guy out there so no one gets put. a disadvantage, so Ross comes out in front, nothing interesting to know last year in the 215 pound final, half corn lost by one point and was penalized for fleeing the mat, so he lost with a point penalty, let's see if that's okay here.
We see it, Scotty has him tied with a collar, he goes to the single and knocks Ross down. You know, in the semi-finals we saw Ross Russell Sadek coming out ofMunising. Sadak took quite a few shots, but Ross beat him to his feet and slipped him. he's pretty far back, usually using his length and his leverage to get him behind the guy, but here we see half of the report right below him with a two-point lead. He's pretty tall, so those legs are a great target for a guy who's a bit. a little shorter like half the corn and, well, right now half the corn protecting the 2-1 lead but Ross comes out in front.
Oh, I thought I'd get what was going to become two, yeah, she turns to him, walks over, and gets in. his two reversal guy just what you said, you said quickness where he was able to slide behind he has the tights on top looks like he's working some kind of inside wrist here trying to rotate that arm out he's used that move quite often in his career in high school and a half horn He works his way back to his base what we have here it looks like Ross is sometimes he was working on the crib there and here he goes back again 22. leaves his head right next to his knee Ross jumps to a crib and he's about to fall right here, boy, this is kind of a surprise, nothing really seemed to happen, all of a sudden, boom, throws him behind his back in a box, it's like, uh, Capricorn has the Shoulder up, he's not going to get caught up in this. situation because he has his shoulders in the air, but here we see Ross coming out to the side, really putting a lot of pressure, but in the middle of the corner again, his shoulders in the air, on Ross's neck, there boy, look at him, look at the real faces.
Both guys are working really hard here and we can see that Ross has gotten off the side that he's trying to get down, he's putting a lot of pressure on that shoulder, he's using his chin to get that shoulder down and he's very close to it and there it is. He's right on the horn, let us know what's in the game. I think he did it right before the bell, yes, the officials talk to each other without any indication yet at the head table to make sure he's going to do the right thing. call, uh, Russ Burke Losi, you can see it right there, yeah, it's going to hold, yeah, Dan Ross is pinned with Tracy Haffer Corn at 159, you see, he just figures it out and Dan Ross, the number two seed, is the champion superior, a great ending to a great. career for Dan Ross overseas and now it's time for the bigs and we've got a couple of bigs, number one seed Bill Baker, from a record standpoint, tournament best at 37-0, takes on Don Balzavic of Escanaba, senior. who has 19 wins against eight losses to get here Baker pinned number five seed Mike Amaker of Saint Ignis in 28 seconds, while Balsamic needed overtime against Lee Curignon of Gladstone well, here we go, the fourth meeting between these two wide bodies, I'll tell you what and Bill Baker has won all three and it looks like as we go forward it's going to be another one of those aggressive fights with no holes and you see Bill Baker kind of just pushed him, yeah, Bill Baker is really armed, well, really strong for a heavyweight, he's not one of those big, fat, sloppy heavyweights, but on the other hand, Mostovich is fine, he's probably only about 210 pounds compared to Bill Baker's 270, so he looks at the end of that or on the edge. off the mat, Baker is able to throw him out of the way, well you see Russ percolosi go in and panic, try to calm Savage down a little bit, you know he's got the adrenaline in him, he wants to be very feisty.
We'll have to do that to fight a big guy like this, uh, Baker almost gets knocked down here on the edge of the mat. I think we're going to see a lot of push from these things, that's what happened in all three. matches these guys and it should be pretty interesting here, you really know, it seems like they're waiting for Baker to make a mistake where he can capitalize because you said there's a big 60 pound weight difference and you really have to pick your spots. When you fight a guy much bigger than you, yes, and he is also Bakers, you also know that not only is he strong, but for a heavyweight he is very fast and also quite agile, we will now move on to the beginning of the third period with Bill Baker. top three nothing uh Bal Savage has two penalty points Bill Baker an escape to make the differential three points and that's a lot of weight on you but as Don jumps and now he gets a lot of what he gets up his feet really take their hips, good hand control and leaves for the Escape.
He's done it all day. He's very fast under these two guys. I think they spent a lot of time in the weight room and you see the old cat Mouse again. It happens again as Ball Savage walks to the edge of the madman. He's been penalized a couple of times for playing The Edge and now he comes on the attack and Bill Baker just goes down and gets two points, you know a lot of all the shots. that he has taken, probably not the best he has, he went to the side a couple of times, got into the leg a little bit, but here he doesn't get a great shot, Baker manages to take down and then balsavage again . with the Escape, so it's going to be five to three and it's all going to come down to the end of the match, maybe again, who's going to get the last takedown is going to win.
Stranger, that's amazing, there's a champion, let's take another look at that 10 and Just uh, look better, there's two and two ends and here you can see Baker very tight while Baker's straight-legged Salvage takes him in the air until the mat, uh sit your hips to the side. a reverse half really putting a lot of pressure on, we see burkalosi coming in for the count and he gets a two count and gets two and two here, 480 pounds in the air, wow that's a lot of tonnage coming down to the mat there. Scott and that's just a great ending to a great match and congratulations to both guys, so that closes out the 32nd annual wrestling finals.
There you see Bill Baker coming up to shake hands with the Escanaba coaches and raise his hands in In the victory, Bill was greeted by his cousins Brian and Matt, also champions, and each of his fathers was also a champion. .
