Free horsepower from your Rovan!

Apr 14, 2024
How are you doing, smokers? Today we have a little bit of a different video format here mainly because I'm actually talking to you. A new engine appeared. This is a 36cc twin ring Rovan engine. You are going to follow the first steps to execute it. These motors are now welded and ready to run, but due to assembly issues they are not ready to come out of the box. These are a fantastic engine. They're probably the best bang for

your

buck in what you can get on a big bore, this is a 36cc big bore engine, so in this video and the next one we're going to go over the basic steps to get this working properly as if.

If it were a big engine, it should have tons of power and we're going to make sure that happens that way. The first steps we're going to take, we're going to take the engine down, we're going to take these covers off, we're going to go in, we're going to take the head off and what we're going to do. What we will end up doing is we are going to remove one ring so you can see this engine has two rings now, that is done according to Rovan to improve compression, however compression is not really what that does, with the double rings you end up having a better ring.

Use a better ring or longevity, but on the other hand, you end up with double the friction and drag on the piston and we don't want to eliminate the drag, so we'll end up doing a ring removal. when removing the gasket, lower the head so we have proper compression because at this point it's nothing to write home about, it's decent. Don't get me wrong, you can run this engine as is and it will run fine, but we want it to run great and it will run great before you start with the modifications, you will need some tools, these are Allen wrenches.

Disassemble the engine. A good Phillips screwdriver. A nice big head by removing the screws from the top. box and an alfa knife to remove the gasket, it doesn't have to be as crazy as mine, but this is what I have, hey, engine removed, now we are going to release the head very carefully, look, you have a base gasket, it's one of this sealant that doesn't even seem to be dry and we're going to very carefully remove the top of the head to check for any kind of strange wear and as you can see try to get some light this engine doesn't even have It hasn't been used yet and there is some kind of dirt inside the motor.

So if you're going to use a Rovan engine, you at least have to open it before you do it, because what we're going to do is To use some acetone or gasoline, we're going to clean all the surfaces inside the engine that the gasoline is going to touch. touch to make sure it's spotless because we don't want any idiots inside our new engine to be destroyed now. that we have our engine open, inspect, look for any other places where we want to check the piston skirt, the bottom here, make sure we don't feel any burrs, any machining around the edges of the piston, check the top, you can feel, I can just feel it with my thumbnail, there is a slight burr right on the top of the piston.
Now I'm going to continue from here in the next video, destroy this completely and we'll end up carrying the head and the housing and In that video I'll go over how to arrange the piston so that it runs smoothly, but from here it's okay, we have the two piston rings , we only want to run one, so we're going to very carefully slide the piston ring until we get to one. side and very carefully pull up, remove it from the ring. Make a groove and then just gently work

your

way around there. The top ring is out and we're going to hold on to this one because now that we have some major wear on the ring, we're going to need a replacement, so this one is going to stay in the parts bin and now for the hard part, it's going to take this bottom ring and will move it to the top slot, so get it.
Again, around one point, you'll find that there is a pin on the piston that locates the piston ring, so we'll find that point, crush the piston ring again, and then very gently lift it up towards the second one. Ring groove a few moments later, remove the piston ring completely to see which one seems to be in better shape and then put it back on the piston tip facing up, find the locator pin, place the ring in its groove and again with a lot careful. work until you're home that's where your piston ring will want to live now this is where the magic happens here with the knife and we're going to get very carefully under this base gasket now from here grab some acetone or gasoline , whatever you choose to move it inside the motor, move it inside the head if you have a toothbrush or something, a paintbrush, work there because you want to get rid of all the nonsense that was left here from the machining couldn't hurt either. take a piece of 400 grit sandpaper or Scotch Brite SOS, well not Scotch Bray SOS, gently clean the mating surface here and then before you put any type of sealer or anything else on, use acetone, clean both mating surfaces or pure gasoline because I don't want any oil left to prevent this from sealing and then we'll use a very thin coat of petroleum resistant RTV or box sealer, that's what I like to use and very lightly, very lightly.
We want to make sure that all the surfaces here are covered because so that we get a good tight seal because then the engine comes back on, you can hear without the gasket, nothing bottoms out nice and smooth, but by removing this gasket and replacing it with sealant, I have lowered the head slightly to get the piston to go up, you end up having higher compression and more engine bogging than if you had taken it out of the box, this has taken 15 minutes but it will make a big difference in the way your engine runs. engine, so if you want to stay with the second part, we will continue to dismantle the rest of this engine and we will tackle it with some real tools, be careful.
