Rovan 36cc pull start common issues and fixes.

Apr 21, 2024
hello youtube, welcome back to wtf rc cars so today we're going to try to fix a

common

problem where the manual

start

er gets stuck and won't activate that way which isn't much use when trying to

start

an engine so The first thing we need to remove the dust cover, then you have four screws, two on the top and two on the bottom right, so there are many ways to do it. You can remove the motor. You can remove the dirt guard from there. The easiest way I finally get into them is a socket with the tip of a screwdriver, one of the universal joints and a small extension and then you can just ratchet them out and once they come loose they will unscrew pretty much by hand , so we'll go ahead with that and I'll get back to you in a second, so moving this way, the easiest way I've found to get this out is to basically put what you want in the head of the allen wrench, um, it's A little complicated to get an allen key.

Enter here because it hits everything, but basically, if you put it in, get a pair of pliers, take it and twist it a few times once you've given it a few twists, it will come off by hand, so just squeeze with your fingers, like this let's get that one out good, so save this one for last because it's the easiest to reach and then once you get it out that far, you don't need the tip of the screwdriver or the handle of the screwdriver, should I say? You can just remove it using the tip of the screwdriver and watch that they don't fly off because they have spring washes and sometimes the washes get caught and sometimes they come off but you don't want to lose them so once you take them off.

Then you can remove this and inspect that part now, as long as there's no damage to any of these, and they all look good, we can move on to check them and usually they're the ones that get stuck because they get filled with aluminum dust. and all kinds. but they are pretty stiff and basically get stuck and then when you

pull

on the starter they don't get stuck, they don't move to engage with those they need to catch, they are also the parts that break. If you're a little clumsy and a little crazy with manual starting, then what we need to do is clean all this up, basically get all that stuff out of there, do it and I'll get back to you right away, so if you can get a good photo of this, basically what you're looking for is to get it really nice and clean so they don't stick because basically what happens is they get filled with dirt and they'll come back nice and easy, but they get a bunch of dust and debris and then they stay open in that position and then when you

pull

the starter button, it just turns here and it will never catch, it will never grab onto these, so it will never turn.

The engine dies but once you remove all the dust and debris you can see that they will move pretty freely and all you need to do is make sure the pull start mechanism is pulling and returning so now just it's a matter of putting it back in and see if you can see it, basically when you put it back in you just want to make sure you don't push them, you should try to move the starter between them, but you should only need one of these back in position or such time the first two just so I can try it and this is definitely a lot harder with one hand let's see if I can start with that so if you roll it up to now then you can just move it like this and line it up let's get another screw that should be able to pinch that one now let's try to introduce another one and an advantage is working on these fifth scales, they are so big that you don't have any problems getting to most places, now you don't want to pinch them all the way until you have all four in, so you know not to, so you're squeezing them and everything stays straight. but just to try it, you can cut them off and then we should turn them off and at this point it became very obvious that this wasn't going to work, we have something else that's broken, so another

common

cause of these failing, uh, easy.

Basically this has to be held in place with that is the end of the spring and if you remove it for the spring to hold it in position and return it it also causes it to spin when you pull the starter now the problem does this have a screw in the middle basically so it holds it in place and keeps it from coming out and keeps the spring from falling out, but what seems to happen is that this part, let's see if I can get it, is meant to be attached? the outer casing down there and it breaks and then when this breaks even though the bolted top comes out forward that's why you get all this dust that looks like aluminum because then it falls forward when the engine is running here and rubs on the inside, so it falls forward there and it catches here and then when you pull it out, it can't drive because the spring that's on the top falls down, the foot falls back and then your little drive gear instead of being able to activate and push the motor, push the motor like this, it's just spinning, so let's see what we can do about it.
Now you could replace the black plastic part of the pull starter, but I'm going to see if we can drill a hole. down all the way, then take the brass insert out of that bit, put a longer one all the way to the back of this, put a big washer and a locknut on and then we should be able to set the gap. so it can't fall forward, but because it is held on all the way around the back with a large washer and locknut, it should be much stronger and might last a little longer. I'll go and try to find some pieces and see if we can fix that right, so we have them all drilled all the way through, we have a stop mechanism that needs to go in there, then we need a bolt long enough to go through the top and we need a hole through this bit.
So we can put a nut and bolt on the back to hold it on, so let's see how we continue with that. Okay, that's the hole drilled through it, so we have a hole over there, a hole over there, and then that should still be on top. from there and it will position itself right in the middle of that, so it should keep everything where it needs to be. Now we need a nut and a bolt to hold it in place, so basically what we're looking for is the bolt all the way back through the hole, the spring where it should be and then on the back, I looked for a larger washer.
I don't have a locking nut, so I had to put a nut on and then tighten one up to it, um. and then I just cut the top off to hold it in place, but basically what we should have now is a functional boot that can't go forward, so that spring can't fall out, so let's put it back on the card. If it works fine then we just put the screws back on, you can see the two nuts locked together so they don't come loose, the mechanism is fully aligned again and I'll see if I can get a video of this without the dust cover falling back off and , as you can see, now we have a starter that activates every time, so it's easy to fix if you have a uh, literally, you need a bit, uh, nuts, a couple of knots and a bolt, a washer. and a lock washer and that's the entirety of the parts I've used to fix the pull starter but ultimately this is going to be a lot stronger than it was designed for in the first place because it can't break so let's see how long does this last if you like this video like and subscribe and don't forget to ring the notification bell to see when we upload another one of these pearls of wisdom if you enjoyed it if you have any comments leave them below and thanks again for watching cars wtf rc
