Using the heart shaped

wood

en plaques from Dollar Tree before we get into today's video, I wanted to give a quick shout out to Mariah Riley, she watches and comments on all of my videos. Thank you Mariah, a big hug to you for this first DIY. I'll be using these paper flowers I bought from Michaels. There are 36 flowers in this package and I want to say that I paid three

dollar

s for them using a coupon. I liked the multi-color pack because these are the colors that match my room and my comforter, and that's it. where does this piece go before gluing the flowers.

I started by just placing them where I thought I wanted them to go and outlining the outside edge of this heart shaped wooden plaque when you're making a piece like this and you're filling it with something like these flowers, you can very easily lose the shape of the plaque, so I wanted to be careful and not do that so once I lined up the outside of the plate and you can still see it was a heart I went ahead and hot glued them on and then I went ahead and filled the rest of the plate with the remaining

hearts

.

I think I used about 25 of the 36 flowers that came in this package, on the top of the heart here. I wanted to take and just hot glue these petals all the way to the back to give it more shape back because I felt like it was losing its shape, so just folding them back and really defining this inside edge where it tapers at the top of the heart, really helps to maintain its shape. I'm going to hang this piece, so to do that I'm just going to hot glue some twine to the back and that's where I'm going to hang it from.
If you want this piece to stand up, you can easily hot glue to

dollar

tree

djenka blocks, one in front and go to the back at the bottom of this heart, then this piece will stand up easily instead of hanging. Okay, seriously, tell me it wasn't like that. easy to make and the result is so elegant that I almost can't stand it. I love the feel of this piece using these paper flowers and since I didn't use the traditional Valentine's Day colors, it's easily a leave-in decor piece. in my room all year round, this next DIY will use these wooden

hearts

.
I feel like it has more of a country feel than elegant. For this DIY, I will start by removing the yarn hanger and setting it aside. because I'm going to use it at the end to hang this piece for this heart. I'll be using this denim scrapbooking paper and yes, I said denim. You can get this pack of paper at Joanne's for about five dollars. It comes with two different shades of denim this darker denim one lighter one actually became my new favorite find a few months ago and I did a DIY using it. If you want to watch that video, I'll link it in the description box below, so for this heart we'll use that. the darker denim and I'm going to start and just putting a nice thick layer of Mod Podge on the wooden heart plate, once I have it covered well, I'm just going to place this face down on the back of the denim paper to scrapbooking because it is lined with some type of paper, it is not a sticky denim, it is just lined because it is very thin.
I'm going to put it in the oven for about 10 minutes just to speed up the drying process once it's dry. I'm going to take my razor and I'm going to cut off the excess denim for the next step. I'm going to use the aluminum Expo Expo that's available right now at the Dollar Tree and instead of gluing it on, I'm going to take some Waverly chalk paint and the color ivory I'm going to dry brush this over this. I'm not going to adhere it or tape it. I'm just going to hold it in place and just dry brush it on the denim, no need. worry about perfection when it comes to this part because actually the more imperfect it

look

s the more perfect it will

look

and really this is just to give it more of that worn and worn look, maybe that painter jean type look is

what

What are we looking for.
If you're going for this or that cloudy look, it's really easy to do, you don't need a lot of paint on the brush, just go over it lightly if it gets a little harsh in some spots, don't worry. Because you're only adding one character, this seemed a little unfinished to me, so I decided to finish the edges of this heart using this thread. This is a four ply yarn, which means it is not a very thick yarn, it is thicker. that the twine you would get at Dollar Tree but not as thick as nautical rope is a medium size and for this one pound skein I think I paid 298 at Walmart and this set is very useful and I thought this was the thread perfect to finish the edges of this heart.
He still wasn't completely happy with this heart. I felt like it was too simple, something was missing and so what? It is better to finish than one of my yarn flowers and in the center of my flower I like to finish it with a simple button. Now I'm happy with this. There's something about yarn in denim that really has that. country feel, I don't love a farmhouse feel so much but I would say more of a country feel and I think it's a fun change to go into the ultimate DIY, this is kind of a two in one because I'm doing it in two different styles.
I'm going to start with traditional Valentine's Day colors and to do so I'm going to use these scarves I bought at Dollar Tree. I chose three different styles of scarves if you were following me. Me this Christmas, you know the theme of my Christmas DIYs this year was that quilted country Christmas. I used a lot of fabric and had a lot of fun using it when it came to these wood plaques, so for this last DIY I'll be gentle. To go that route, I'm going to give this heart plaque again a really good coat of Mod Podge and use the scarves from the Dollar Tree to cover them and since they had such fun patterns I thought it would work perfect for this, once you attach the fabric over the board, you'll want to apply a second coat of Mod Podge onto the fabric because it helps it adhere to the board a little better and it also makes the fabric a little stiffer and harder, so when you cut off the excess fabric it's very Easy to do and you get nice, clean edges for this DIY.
Not only will I use one of the larger wooden hearts, but I will also use two of these smaller ones. and I was going with one of the simple hearts and one of the hearts that has the arrow through it and I'll do the same thing I did with the big heart, apply the Mod Podge and add fabric. these too and I'll be using two different scarves and the great thing about these scarves is that they have such a large amount of fabric that you can really do a lot of crafts with each of these scarves and you're only paying. a dollar per scarf and honestly I think the fabric is probably over a quarter yard long so you're really getting a lot of fabric and you can see I'm only using a small amount of fabric for each of these. and I thought it would be fun to put a different fabric on each heart once your Mod Podge is nice and dry.
If you use a straight razor to cut off the excess fabric using the plate as a guide you will get very nice clean edges and since I applied that second coat of Mod Podge it made the fabric stiffer so it is very easy to cut and it won't fray because that's me and I like to fray things because these hearts show. a little too clean for me. I'm going to use this brown ink pad that I bought at Hobby Lobby. It says it was 399, but I used a 50% off coupon and bought it for $2 dollars. The

tree

s got black, blue, red pads I think. green one you can get for a dollar if you want to use the black one you can.
I like brown. I think it gives it a more rustic feel and will match the decor in my house a little better, so I decided paying the extra dollar to get the brown was worth it, so I'll just use a stiffer brush. I'll use it to distress the edges of the heart. The next step you don't need to do, but I wanted to do it because I like the dimension. on the back of the two smaller hearts, I'm going to hot glue two dollar tree Jenga blocks and I'll do it in the center of the hearts, nowhere in particular, it doesn't really matter once I take off I'll gluing these hearts to the larger heart and I thought this would give it some dimension, give it that 2d 3d feel by adding these blocks on the back of both, although I'm going with the more traditional colors of this piece, I still wanted to add a little bit of twine to give it that more rustic feel and I feel like that's what twine does and to do that I decided to use two smaller bows for the smaller hearts and a Here's a larger bow for this larger heart and I'm going to replace the twine and instead of using the holes that were once there, I'll just hot glue it to the back for this last DIY.
I wanted to show you how simple it is to stay away from the traditional Valentine's Day colors of pinks and reds, and if you go a more rustic route by incorporating burlap into something like this, you could really make this a decor piece that you can keep , so for this larger heart I chose the burlap and I applied it first with a felt and then with the burlap using Mod Podge and I'm sorry I didn't get it on film, but you actually do it the same way by applying Mod Podge, then the felt and then Mod Podge then the burlap and then Mod Podge again and by doing this you will stiffen the burlap so that when you cut it with the knife it won't fray and you will get a nice clean cut.
I also made the hearts smaller and used this black and white plaid that I had left over from some of my Christmas DIYs and I also used this other fabric that you'll see in an upcoming DIY next week that I actually bought from Walmart and I think it was from Emma and Delilah, I think fat quarters at Walmart. I'm not sure who it was, but you'll see this fabric again in an upcoming DIY this week, like I said, so I really wanted to go with something that was going to match my home decor and just doing this you'll see how it completely changes the look. , the vibe and feel of this DIY by simply making it in colors that suit your decor, in addition to traditional Valentine's Day colors and again true to my nature.
Using the brown ink pad, I'm going to distress the three hearts as they look beautiful, clean and crisp. To me, there's something so rustic about using the ink that you give them when you age them gives them that aged feel, that warm feeling like there's a story behind them, like they've been places and that's a look that I love. I'm going to put this one together the same way using the Jenga blocks on the back and I have to tell you just by changing the fabric I love. The way it changed the feel and look of this piece really went from being just a Valentine's Day piece that you put out every February to a piece that you could leave out all year long and use as a decor piece.
I really love it. the way this looks using the burlap, gingham and this lightweight printed fabric, i think the result of this was exactly what i was looking for and that's why i feel like i'm going to finish it with just one of my yarn loops. because the fabrics alone really add to this piece and so I feel like the simplicity of this piece is nice because of the fabric and the burlap and the way it all comes together and it really gives it that rustic feel and again I'm I'll keep going and I will hot glue the string hanger to the back and like I said before, with any of these pieces, if you want them to be a standing piece, a piece that you put on a shelf or countertop, you can easily do that by gluing a couple of Jenga blocks at the bottom of this heart on the front and back and there you will have a standing piece instead of a hanging one.
I am very happy with the result of this piece. I love it and I think just putting the two of them together was a couple offun pieces to make and you can definitely see how this traditional one is fun, bright and vibrant and this burlap one has that rustic farmhouse chic feel when I said they were quick and easy I wasn't lying, they're quick, they're easy, they're inexpensive and they What I love about decor pieces like this is that you can make them totally Valentine's Day-appropriate or you can transform them. and turn them into something that fits your decor and that you can maintain and that really was my goal.
When making those three hearts was to make them in the traditional Valentine's Day colors and I honestly wasn't very happy with that I wish the scarves had had different colors because I feel like the two pinks didn't contrast enough. It's not different enough, so they just mixed it up, the white stood out a little bit, but you know, it still came out nice, it still had that rustic feel because of the twine, but when I took it and used the burlap and plaid. I think it made it such an elegant piece, a farmhouse piece that could be left there all year and people aren't going to look at it thinking I left out my Valentine's Day decor.
