I try to convey things like that. I know my teammates could use it or stuff. that I know they are worth it and they don't do it, they are not doing it, winning or losing is not the answer, the problem is doing the best you can because in life you are going to feel it many, many times, but if you do the best you can , you will do it. be successful in the long run and that's a lesson that we try to teach these kids the team sport, the team player and the kind of supporting everyone and not just thinking about yourselves Westlands, not just individual teams as well, don't know. drink, no smoking, no drugs, children.

You know there are more than 25 sets of brothers in this wrestling tournament to get top honors. We break down some of them and talk to him as our coverage of Joe Louis Arena on Fox Sportsnet continues.
After this, they have crowned two Stanley Cup champions here over the last four years and today Joe Lewis Arena will be remembered as the greatest wrestling experience for 56 state champions. You know, there are over 20 sets of brothers strapping on their wrestling helmets hoping to be on top of the podium at the end of the day with a state championship title for themselves and their parents. Wrestling is more than just a sport, it's a family affair. Michigan high school wrestling can be described as a family event where coaches or parents and parents become coaches. Family and friends are also there watching from a distance cheering their children on to victory.
A sport like wrestling requires discipline, courage and attitude. It's an individual sport, yes, but it's also a team sport, but in a game where the advantage is crucial to victory, some kids have a little extra help in their corner, a teammate, a brother, we're pretty close we're pretty close I think we do a lot together we spend a lot of time together they have a lot we fight a lot together I mean when we're just at home playing so we just keep hanging around fighting just playing yeah we spend a lot of time together outside of practice too and we hang out together when we're close brothers and, uh, I think that helps too. uh, throughout the year because it is such a hard and long sport in which we know each other very well and it seems that we do not want to fight so much in the season because normally we all lose weight and we are much more tired than in the off-season we practice during the summer and if there's no one to work with me, he'll work with me and fight with me so I can hone my skills a little better, but most of the time he just hands it over to me. trying to keep up with them is pretty much the hardest thing.
I mean, he's so good, he got so good so fast and I think I only placed higher than in one tournament in my high school career, so he's tough, he works hard every day last. I've been the little brother on the team for two years, so it's nice to be the big brother in Boston for a while and tell him to get going when he's slacking off or something. It's fun. Wrestling coaches understand what it takes to win and they understand the sacrifices their athletes make, and as brothers, they know that having someone close to you on your team can make those sacrifices a little easier to handle.
Wrestling can bring a family together a lot, so you know. They sacrifice a lot these kids sacrifice a lot their weekends uh going out with their friends uh food you know what wrestling is, it's a very hard sport and to overcome it it's a long season and to overcome it you have to stay together, you have to be able to listen when things happen. things go wrong, you are not in a good mood, you can go to someone who understands that normal siblings argue, compete and sometimes even fight for fun, sometimes we fly, it's okay and we get along, we do a lot of things together and in Most of it is pretty good.
I practice with it and sometimes I knock it down. I think that motivates him to hurt me some more. My other typical siblings. I mean, there are times when we fight and we don't get along. but I'm going to fight so you won't see it, you'll see it encouraging each other, you know, it's never a fighting thing. Once they're on the mat, they cheer each other on. It will come. It's no surprise that human nature soon takes over in a sport as grueling and challenging as wrestling when one brother watches another fight on the mat, emotions flow quickly, yes I always knew I'd be a wrestler just because it's been tough and hard. uh boy since he's little because he's always the youngest on our block but uh I get more nervous for him than when I'm fighting and uh after his madtima I'm not so nervous for myself anymore so kind of helpful in that factor to see Their game doesn't make me so nervous.
Well, some will be successful, others won't, we know that a successful lineage is here, the Torella family, their two sons talk about how they reached the state championship. games and how much pride you have, well, I'm very proud, obviously, as a father and a coach, that both guys wrestle and they both made it to the Michigan State

For some of these Grapplers, it's their first trip to the Joe Louis Arena for a competitive match. Fighters need four. win here to win a weight class title and welcome back a lot of people come here inside the Joe Lewis Arena, the crowd surrounds them and suddenly they feel a little intimidated the school, probably the most comfortable, Temperance's room, our goals in terms of what the team achieves This is always the same building.
I almost started this program 30 years ago, 35 years ago, 36 years ago and they took it to a level where every year we want to be state champions and every year we're in the hunt for the state championship last. The year before they beat us in the semi-finals, the year before we won, the year before we were runners-up and the year before we were in the semi-finals, so we were there the whole time, we always put that at the forefront and these kids last year. We went undefeated other than a loss in the state tournament, we won all of their tournaments, we lost in the semi-finals and it was disappointing, we felt like we didn't achieve what we needed to, so we set our goals high and all the kids hope to achieve them.
They happen, we come together as a family, we can all feel how everyone is doing, we know if someone is fighting better and if someone is not fighting better, then we can encourage them as much as we can and bring them back so they can fight the best they each can. of these kids care about each other each one cares about the program we will get into a situation Chad Diddy, our 19 pound fighter, could have fought individually but preferred to just fight as a team. He washurt and possibly could have done it individually too, but he said I can do better for the team if we don't support each other at all times and make sure no one gets depressed because one person gets depressed.
We will drag other people down and by lifting them up we will act as a team and make sure we come out victorious. We got up at 6:45 or 6:30 this morning and ran this morning to prepare for this one of ours. The kids are willing to sacrifice and pay the price. They understand that we're always talking about if you do the right thing, if you pay it forward, something good will come of it. We have four captains and the four of us unite. and we talk about if there is someone who is depressed and we have to bring it up, we talk about that if someone is in their situations in the rest of the room, like if someone is not getting along, things like that, we have to make sure that we are all working together. friendly, so we don't have any fights and everyone works as hard as they can.
We have talented kids, talented like Justin, we have average kids, we have some kids that have very little talent, we have kids. with a tremendous recruitment of good, smart kids, we have some tough kids that we have to discipline and do some things, so we were such a big program that we will have probably about 55 boys in the program plus another 25 girls, so we're going to have a mix of everything uh the mules have been kicking for a long time in 11 state championships how do they keep doing it year after year? Well it's really surprising but Bill ring nearby was the head coach there for many many years, Denny Brighton came in just a few years ago and has continued the tradition.

Welcome. Back to Joe Louis Arena, friends when you cover Sports, you look for the silver lining, you look for inspiration, you don't need to look any further than the next piece, his name is Scott Zesko, he makes it to the state championship with just one loss. and a guy you can't help but feel sorry for.
We began documenting Scott Susco's incredible journey in 1999 when, as a sophomore, he surprised and delighted those in attendance at Joe Louis Arena with a fourth-place finish in the state finals. He has a mentality and Scott has all those things and he also has physical talent. You know that he is an athlete and with his character and his determination that is what makes him succeed. A lot of people always compliment me and say, "Yeah, you're amazing." I'm glad you're doing this and it makes me feel good. Scott responded to his first trip to the Joe with two exceptional encores last year.
He returned to the United States and placed fifth this season. He completed his high school career with a personal best of 54. -2 record while he ranks third now if these achievements are not enoughimpressive, consider that Scott Susco has accomplished these feats despite having only one leg at the tender age of 12, this energetic young man began experiencing severe pain in his left leg, he was actually in a basket, the basketball banquet my sister and I got in the car that night and I felt pain I couldn't stand it was like a charlie horse but it doesn't go away and our local compactor took an x-ray and he didn't like what he was seeing and sent me to another doctor and he wasn't very sure and we want a second opinion on what it was and that's when he sent us to the Dr. all here in Detroit, the diagnosis was all his, a type of bone. cancer that is highly fatal, suddenly the teenager faced a very adult decision.
The doctor caught me at work and told me that he wanted to take the leg off and that was bad enough and he told me they could amputate my leg or he could replace it. every bone in my leg, but it would increase the chances of the cancer spreading. Did you understand the magnitude at that age? Yeah, I got it, I knew what cancer was and then I basically couldn't believe it was me and I was just like, which one can? I play sports and he said amputate it so that was my decision at first, it was a little frustrating but then it just kind of happened.
I just have to get used to it now. Go forward. Scott's passion for sports, particularly wrestling, drove him to persevere. I had changed my form a bit, at first I dropped, struggling with my knee instead of standing up, but it was basically the same form, just my posture was different initially, as they had already attracted most of the attention to return to the state. The finals stopped another tough competitor. I think a lot of the novelty of his leg is starting to wear off. You know, most of the coaches that have seen it now and he's been here, so the state has seen it and they've accepted it. now also, as a wrestler, you know, he looks like everyone else in our area, do you know that he is just a wrestler and that he is very good and this four-time captain of the team has become an inspiration to everyone.
A coach talked to me. the kids lost their leg and he says boy, I wish my son was here watching, you know, because what a great inspiration and he's, yeah, you know, you know he's just Scott, but to a lot of other people that you know that have . come talk to me you know he was an inspiration I mean he's doing things that you know no one would expect him to do every time someone comes up to me he always does he makes me feel good and he lets me know that I'm making other people happy people. and I hope he helps like someone else with an amputee or who doesn't even have fatigue, just disability.
Hopefully it will give them a little foreign boost.
