Watch Morning Joe Highlights: March 2 | MSNBC

Mar 24, 2024
Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, a hearing dominated by grievances Politics as Attorney General Merrick Garland makes his first appearance before the new Congress, actually had insurrectionists as the guy was like, what's really like the bird, the bone hands of bird, how to make the uh, the power? of people make the sign with raised fists, that's right. Raised bird fist, yeah, um, yeah, I mean, there we go. I'm telling you, a strong wind could break that arm. You have to be careful, but anyway, against the Democratic challenger, alone, but anyway. Can you believe that insurrectionists trying to overthrow American democracy could sit in front of Merritt Garland, a guy who dedicated his life to the rule of law, and be moralistic Willie, what a joke, it was quite a spectacle and since we've When we started this , we could also show that this is the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday, where you, as you point out, had many of the same people who applauded the January 6th attack and who applauded the overturning of the 2020 election even after the stroke.

By the way, I voted to put Attorney General Merrick Garland in the hot seat yesterday on a variety of issues. Here is some of what happened yesterday. I must say that I am deeply disappointed by what the last two years have shown, in my opinion, the Department of Justice has been politicized to the greatest extent that I have seen in this country and has discredited the Department of Justice, the FBI and the administration of law in this country. I also want to at least respond to your characterization of the department with which I strongly disagree. I believe the men and women of the department do their jobs every day in a proper, nonpartisan federal garland when rioters descended on the homes of six Supreme Court justices night after night after night you did nothing Have you filed a single case against any of these protesters who threaten the judges of the ruling under section 1507 of the 18 USC?

He even brought a senator, he asked me if I just sat there and on the contrary, I sent 70 United States Marshals, why are you not willing? to say no, the answer is no, you know it's no, I know it's not, everyone in this courtroom knows it's no, you're not willing to answer a question when you issued your directive, when you directed your criminal divisions and your divisions anti-terrorists. to investigate parents who are angry with school boards. I didn't do that. I did not issue any memo directing the investigation of parents who are concerned about their children.
watch morning joe highlights march 2 msnbc
The memo targeted violence and threats of violence against a large number of school staff. It was not aimed at parents filing complaints with their school board's attorney general. Are you cultivating sources and spies in Latin Mass parishes and other Catholic parishes across the country? The Department of Justice doesn't do that. How many informants do you have in Catholic churches across the United States? I don't know and I don't think we have informants targeting Catholic churches. Does your department have a problem with anti-Catholic bias? Our department protects all religions and all ideologies. He has no prejudice against any religion of any kind.

The decisions about how to do this were made on the ground by the FBI, so you're saying you don't know. I'm saying what I just said, which is that you are abdicating responsibility. I'm not abdicating. I, the answer is: Do you believe that, in your opinion, you were the Attorney General of the United States? It is run by the Department of Justice and yes, sir, you are responsible. So give me an answer. We're supposed to hate long guns and assault weapons. you're happy to deploy them against Catholics and innocent children Joe, we've got to start with the acting, it's just, oh my God, you know, I was thinking I'd cut Willie off, we, the acting, we're so glad you caught that because As I was

ing this, I was thinking, I really think the

morning

show should work.
I think it's a service to all of these members. We can play Sarah Mclaughlin's tune in Arms of an Angel, right? And say, for five dollars, for only five dollars, you can. contribute to the people who are insurrectionists against the United States of America, uh, who tried to overthrow a democratic election and help them with acting lessons, by the way, here we have these three, these three populists, the guy is shouting and again some of The worst performances I've ever had. I see I'm still on the verge of doing it, but anyway, the first guy was a guy from Princeton who I think went to Harvard Law School and then there was the corn guy, the guy from Oxford who voted for John Kerry and then there was Josh.
Hawley yelling at the insurrectionists. I love this, embarrassed for us Oxford kids, and then there was Josh Hawley, who was yelling at the undergrads and then at Stanford Law School, and everyone was screaming and screaming doing his populist nonsense, but I mean, This is very good, but we. We need just Oxford if we can make one that only has members who went to Oxford and voted for John Kerry and played with the right wing population that would be great maybe we could work on that too but first of all that was What a scream bad guys about the most politicized Justice Department that has ever followed Donald Trump's Justice Department and Barr, who played Donald Trump's Lackey again until the end, when he decided Well, I have to go out and write a book about how I saved how I won the war, it's really mind-blowing and then you know these guys pick up stuff from the Internet and actually have the temerity to act in shock and then they ask Mary Garland if you take long guns after little kids like, what are they?
Doing this is this is like uh who is the oldest Republican in history? It's not right, it's not Doug Grassley. Oh, I thought you meant the story, yeah, Grassley Grassley, what's up with these people saying oh, they're taking AR? 15 so they're breaking down doors and shooting people not only Holly says they're doing that to her calf like it's unbelievable it's unbelievable that they're actually doing this but again you had Donald Trump none of them complained When Donald Trump was pushing his attorney general to arrest his political opponent and his family two weeks before the presidential election and these are the people who led the insurrection against the United States government from within the legislative branch and they are the ones who are the most shocked and stunned like what a joke, yeah, I think they probably weren't shocked and stunned when we saw some of those bad performances, we have to get a workshop or something, maybe I don't know if Rob Reiner would volunteer some of his time. of our great directors and simply help them in these actions because it is a bit like you point out because these are the same people, these are the same senators who applauded the Insurrection who supported the people who went to the Capitol attacked the capital and they didn't even tell you I'll explain if you're

watch

ing the show wondering what Senator Hawley was talking about there.
It's a story about a man in Pennsylvania who stands outside abortion clinics and harasses women as they come and go. confrontation a shoving fight with someone in one of them he was charged with assault he was later acquitted but it was the way he was arrested that Josh Hawley is talking about that FBI agent showed up at his house with guns to arrest him they thought it was too much That's what he's talking about if you live your life every day, you go about your life or your job and you're with your kids, you may not know it, but it's something that has consumed certain corners of the news for cable and the Internet, and that's what Ayer went to that hearing with the attorney general to take advantage of these incidents of these people to make them see more clearly about the armed Department of Justice, again, the same people who promoted and pursued an insurrection against the United States government and I wonder. and I've always wondered why they weren't investigated why the members of the house who knew what was coming didn't remember the tours those who gave the tours those who wore Kevlar vests those who brought weapons January 6th because they knew there was going to be problems, what was the department of justice after them?
Why didn't I still want to know? I said it the next day, I kind of shouted it the next day, why aren't these people who knew there? about the insurrection and were part of the insurrection why they have never been charged seems to be a good question. I mean, I understand there are a lot of people who think the federal government should be overthrown, apparently the 40 percent who still support it. Donald Trump I mean I think Donald Trump is going to win the Republican nomination which means the Republican base supports the overthrow of the federal government every time you say election denialism well yeah Alexa it's the same if you overthrow if you want to overthrow to an election just because your side loses and, by the way, the more I see, the more I read, the more I talk to people, the more clear it is that they don't care, they don't care that Donald Trump tried to overthrow American democracy, they don't care .
They don't care, so you try to rule out a presidential election. They don't care that he wanted to end the United States Constitution. These Democrats are who you are going to face and if he is elected, you know it, because everyone talks about sadness. ah I don't see it I just don't see it I think the sadness is going to melt if she faces Donald Trump on the debate stage there will be a guy who if elected Katie closed the door on him already said she wants to end the Constitution of America and Republicans love him.
She already tried to overthrow American democracy and Republicans still love her. He already tried to arrest his political opponent like they do in banana republics when he's two weeks away from yelling at his attorney general. arresting his political opponent and his family two weeks before the election and everyone loves him in the Republican Party, this is the constant threat to American democracy and I'll tell you what, Mika, it's terrifying, during a Committee hearing House Homeland Security on Tuesday. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia blamed the rise in fentanyl overdose deaths on Joe Biden's administration. No, she is now number one among young Americans between 18 and 45 years old.
And this is inexcusable, the Biden administration is responsible for this and they have blood on their hands. Because they refuse to secure our border, she also posted a clip on Twitter of a mother who testified at that hearing. The woman lost her two children to a fentanyl overdose, which Marjorie Taylor Green blamed on the Biden Administration. Their deaths are, of course, tragic, but we will do it. now check Congresswoman Greene's timeline, both men she referred to died in 2020 during the Trump administration. CNN reporter Daniel Dale contacted Green's office about that mistake that Dale posted on Twitter that Green's spokesperson responded with expletives, you can see it on the screen, uh, and still ahead, but if you look at that, I mean to my Barnacles, they say everyone who cares about your fact checking, which is another way of saying, do you think anyone cares about the facts?
This is what the Russians did. This is what they continue to do. Do the Russians really call it a hose of falsehoods where the idea is to lie so much that you simply overwhelm your opponents? It's what Hitler did during the 30s and 40s: they lied so much that they didn't expect people to actually believe. Every lie just wanted to numb them to the truth, so the truth just didn't matter, people stopped trying to figure out what the truth was and they just chose sides and that's exactly what's happening here, one lie after another, lie after lie. green Marjorie Taylor lie by certain networks that there is lie after lie and then they are desperate to try to find any excuse they can to distract themselves from the fact that they have been caught lying red-handed about covid lying about the election lie about the biggest stories of our time lie and say the US military and soldiers and troops are going to fly helicopters from Afghanistan to the US and attack Trump supporters lie and say the FBI is going to break down doors lie saying that the FBI is going to arrest people just because they voted for Donald Trump these are the lies they bombard my relatives and friends with I wish I could say it every night but you hear the lies on podcasts you hear the lies on radio conversations They see the lies online then they see the lies at night and they're just numb, they say no, well I'll believe it, why not?
Who can you believe? And that's what everyone says, they say, oh you know. It's so hard to find out what the truth is now that I don't even watch the news anymore, but they did, they saw the propaganda, they digest the lies and then they give themselves a way out saying, you know what you know, it's too hard to find out all this. is veryconfusing because everyone says different things, that is the goal of liars, that is the goal of propagandists, that is the goal of certain networks, that is the goal of podcasters, that is the goal of these people who are spreading the Trump lies they just want. to lull people to sleep and that's exactly what they've done, yes, they've done it, Joe, and they've been very successful in doing it.
You know, we started this

morning

at six o'clock sharp with a full-on farce play, performing, uh, performance art, Senators. Holly, Cruz and Kennedy are questioning the Attorney General of the United States and I have to tell you, for me it was personally depressing to watch. It's depressing to watch Marjorie Taylor. Green is depressing to watch and all I can think about is looking back at history. Do you know where Joseph Welch is when we need him? I mean, Joseph Welch was a lawyer from Boston, Massachusetts, who stood his ground. at the Army McCarthy hearing and told Senator Joe McCarthy, who was conducting the hearings, that they were somewhat similar to what is happening today, the play depicting farce and, above all, to his point, complete lies who said they managed to control the American public in the early '50s and Joseph Welch, the lawyer, looked right at Senator McCarthy and said, have you no sense of decency, sir, have you no sense of decency and who has a sense of decency? decency today?
While he watched Holly and the others Cruz Kennedy Green Marjorie Taylor blathered on and on with their lies and misinterpretations of reality. You know, I wonder where they think the country is and if they think about the country. What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see your loved ones? own ambition at the expense of the country I think they do, yes, and it is a very, very damaging aspect, they lie, they got caught lying about covid, they got caught lying about greed over and over again, throughout 2020, they got caught lying about the elections.
I knew that Donald Trump lost the election all these people knew that Donald Trump lost the election all of them and they all lie to their voters their listeners to their viewers their liars and they know they're lying you can you can you can speak for them on the side where they will tell you yes he lost and then they will get in front of the cameras and say otherwise or you can just look at his text messages, everyone knew he lost and yet Jonathan, they keep lying. I just can't stop it and you ask why.
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know how they could do it, they just do it, although not every day, they continue to lie, their politicians lie, the media lies, they continue. Lying, it's too obvious your attempt to maintain or regain some kind of power. You see some attempts to achieve the personal ability to make a little more money from it, whether it's about podcasts and whatnot, but it's certainly also about raising funds and doing them. turning them into stars, so that's part of it, it's about the headline, it's about owning the libraries, it's about getting the click, um, that's what the spirit of government has become for so many, not all, but many do, in the Republican Party, and it has been that way for a while, certainly, Trump accelerated it and now we are faced, of course, with him again on center stage with the lies with the lies about greed with the lies about lies about the election, the Allies about the insurrection in which, of course, you still haven't fully understood what happened and this is where the Republican Party stands as we enter another election cycle.
The Democrats, of course, are trying to present a very different, stable, bleaker case, and by the way, the more they lie, these members lie about the election being stolen, the more they lie about Covid, the more they lie in defense of Donald Trump and his crazy theories that they actually lose elections and have every year the more money they collect from taxpayers, the more money pours into their campaign accounts, yes, this is the ecosystem where lying is rewarded and also amplified, yes, and while the House Republicans launch investigations into coronavirus origins, Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida had this response to House Oversight Committee Republican Chairman James Comer during a hearing Tuesday.
Listen, I just want to. To convey something that was just said during the roundtable, Dr. McCary just said today at the coronavirus pandemic select subcommittee roundtable: the following, and I quote, the biggest author of misinformation during the pandemic was the government of the United States. End of quote based on those comments. I would like more information too, I mean did that person specifically talk about the misinformation that President Trump spread about maybe putting light into the body could get rid of covid or maybe using a horse tranquilizer to get rid of it? of covid? talking about the misinformation that maybe we can do a body cleanse, you know it as misinformation, so I would like to know the misinformation that was put out, you know Kovid will be gone in a couple of months. that misinformation, you know, there was a lot of misinformation put out there, so I would love to maybe have a hearing on that, Mr.
President, I think that would be fantastic, I stand back, I mean, it really is, it's just amazing that you have Republicans. speaking of misinformation, I am referring again to the lack of fair self-awareness, of the lies that have been spread for years, that Donald Trump, your hero, has spread about Clorox bleach putting bleach into your body to clean it. Donald Trump in January told the American Church Donald Trump on January 24, 2020 saying that President XI and China are doing a great job and they are being transparent and they are helping us and on behalf of the American people Donald Trump thinks that President XI is so open about the covert or when Donald Trump said it was a person who came from China and would be leaving soon and then Donald Trump later said that it's a handful of people that come here and he hears it when it's warmer outside, uh, it'll just go away. it's going to magically go away, I mean, we could talk and we've been for hours just quoting the misinformation, just quoting the lies and again, this is a look at the bird that's there, they get one thing they can try to grab. and it's usually just a piece of information, just a partial truth, and they try to blow it up thinking people are going to be stupid enough and it's a real insult to Republicans that they're trying to talk to people. stupid enough to overlook everything that has been in front of them for years about all the lies that Donald Trump pushed regarding coveting all the lies, all the mangled conspiracy theories that Trumpers have been pushing for years is really Seriously, they're not ashamed, it's been incredible in these first few weeks of this new Congress with the Republican majority in the chamber to watch the extent to which Republicans are engaging in these conversations, I mean, we want to focus on misinformation and disinformation.
A Democrat says great, let's talk about it. We just heard that from the congressman. Moskowitz Republicans say release all the tapes, the security videos from January 6th. They really want to talk about January 6th and what happened that day and their attempts to overturn a presidential election. I guess the answer to the question of why is because for a lot of these members who are just political celebrities, it doesn't matter because they're just talking, they're preaching to the choir and they can raise money by appearing to defend the people they think they're defending or raising. issues they believe they are defending. they're important to your viewers or your podcast listeners or whatever.
Your audience is, but as you've been saying for a long time, if they really want to open these Pandora's boxes again, those are conversations Democrats are happy to have in public. Jonathan omir We have some news, breaking news from the BBC. Lincoln and Lavrov for me for the first time since the invasion. You talked about it, but some of the details are coming to light. I'm sure you probably have some of this, but, United States Secretary of State. State Anthony Blinken told his Russian counterpart that the United States will support Ukraine for as long as necessary in the conversation that lasted about 10 minutes.
He blinked too, like you said before, he said he's new to freedom. Paul Whalen and also spoke about the Arms Treaty. but it's interesting that again the message is being delivered, we are in this all the way for Ukraine, yes, so this is the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in New Delhi, India, they are the hosts this year. uh, and it wasn't a formal meeting, the two men just met on the sidelines, like you said, it was about 10 minutes, um, but Secretary of State Lincoln was able to deliver some of the messages that his aides have said he was king to do it. who sought out Lavrov and they had this conversation Lavrov at least initial reports that he had not committed to anything, of course and certainly, you know, we had previously denounced the United States' continued support for Ukraine, so what does it mean to see if this will start any kind of dialogue, but it's an interesting moment, Joe, in the war here, where last week, of course, we saw President Biden go to Europe, make that surprise visit to kyiv, give that thunderous speech in Warsaw, but also.
Almost not as a celebration but as a commemoration of the Ukrainian resistance that was that and the unity of that Alliance. There are some difficult days ahead, the president said that and there are some different opinions within the alliance in Europe about whether Putin should be offered some sort of off-ramp, you know or not, do you know how much longer this can last? Full support? And the German chancellor is coming to DC tomorrow, he's meeting the president at the White House and he's a key figure here in county terms. keep the germans at bay and boost support we heard zielinski say that berlin should do more looking for president biden to press that case tomorrow too yeah and elise um yeah im just old fashioned uh i think he speaks with your friends you talk to people who consider the United States their enemies um and and you keep that engagement open so I'm glad, I'm glad Lincoln is talking to Lavrov I hope Biden calls her, it's that kind of Engagement it may not work well, uh, wherever you know John Kennedy is, he's putting on his fake uh uh corn put accent, um, but I think most people are smart enough to know that it's better when we talk, it's better even when There are misunderstandings, this is how you prevent misunderstandings from turning into crises, from turning into wars, we have a war right now, but my God, I think it's very good that we are talking to Lavrov.
I think it's very good that you know we are. We are trying to start talking to China again, because, again, how to prevent a dangerous situation from turning into a global war is certainly a start and the international community is going to have to start pushing a little harder for there to be something. kind of peace negotiations to get to some kind of ground where the Ukrainians and the Russians can reach some kind of agreement or start to start reaching an agreement because otherwise we're looking at another two years of war of trenches and that, ultimately, is not going to benefit.
The Ukrainian civilians who are caught in the middle of this as much as I am would certainly hate to lay ground for Russia, yeah, no doubt, Mike, listen, we'll most likely see if, if, what, uh, military experts on both sides of The Atlantic says there is a chance we will see trench warfare over the next two years, no one will win, just a lot of people will die, and if that happens we will be exactly where we were in World War I, as far as two three years of trench warfare, in that situation no one wins, of course, American policymakers will rightly say that it is up to Ukraine, they were the ones who were invaded and I completely agree with that, the question is, at what point it is just the guarantee of The protection of the US advances the guarantee of NATO by, let's say, even if it is not by NATO but by NATO by another name uh and and and the existence of the protection of Ukraine as a nation in the Future uh, when will that be enough?
Yes, Joe, I mean the word volatile should not be misused here because we have a volatile situation in Ukraine, we have a volatile situation in our relations with both China and Russia and isolation could be combined with the word volatile, not good be isolated from the discussion about these Problems with the Chinese and the Russians to some extent, so the meeting with Lavrov and Blinken is potentially promising, although you hear from certain people who know much more about this than we do than Lavarus's relationship with Putin is not what he was. Recently it was a year or two ago, but still adiscussion is more important than the anger and silence between the parties and David Ignacio's article today on the need to renew and restore a relationship with China between President Biden and President XI, that is also critical, but the volatility and the Bunsen burner effect we must reduce the heat of the war in Ukraine that country has been destroyed we do not want the world to suffer also the voters of Chicago will go to the polls again in April to choose between two candidates who advanced to a second round in Tuesday's primary for mayor the two contenders are former Chicago Public Schools head Paul Valles and our next guest, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, who joins us now.
Thank you very much for joining us this morning. This is historic for many. since there's this runoff going on right now, so tell us why you chose to run and why you should be the next mayor of Chicago. Well, thank you for inviting me and good morning, you know it's a fascinating time in the city of Chicago. exciting, let's make history. I will be the first public school teacher elected to become mayor of the city of Chicago and I began teaching high school over 15 years ago in the city of Chicago at Cabrini Green USA. Everyone is familiar with Cabrini Green and this is a very dynamic community, but it really captures the essence of the city of Chicago because my students would wake up every morning and they could see one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the entire country or one of the richest countries one of the richestCity neighborhoods across the country in the center from their back windows, but from their front windows they have bulldozers looking at them preparing to destroy their public housing and of course they would come into my classroom where I taught studies social and like many families in the city. of Chicago and the entire country chasing this economy that is behind them while everything in front of them falls apart in that Tale of Two Cities, we are going to interrupt that and pour out a better and stronger dream for Chicago, a story, a Chicago, and that's what I'm excited about uh commissioner uh thank you so much for being with us you talked about a safer Chicago, I heard that was part of the description of what your Chicago looks like, there's always kind of an oversimplification in the media when you look at these races, especially what we've seen in the Democratic Party for Merrell or D.A races across the country over the last two years since the big crime Spike and that's a progressive candidate against a Law and Law candidate.
Order quoting my question is: can you? a progressive candidate at the same time as you. I I is that a fake election is a better way to ask this question is that a fake election uh can't The progressive candidates also uh are candidates that are tough on crime well, it's actually about being smart um Frankly, you know my Wife and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage in June and are raising our three children. I mean one of the most dynamic communities in the entire country, it's the Austin neighborhood on the west side of Chicago is one of the largest concentrations of black people in the entire country.
We love the west side. We love the Austin neighborhood, but it's been a community that's been disinvested in over the course of several decades and because of that we've seen unprecedented levels of violence, you know, I had to replace one of the windows because of one of the bullets that went through our house and this is something that we don't just see on the news, we experience it every day and That's why I'm very committed to doing what works. You know, we now know that about 37 percent of the 9-1-1 calls that come into Chicago are mental health crises.
That's why we're putting police officers in a space where they're not qualified to fight, you know we're forcing police officers to behave like social workers, that's irresponsible and that's why you know we're committed to making sure that we have EMTs and crisis interventionists and social workers and therapists who can show up to address mental health crises and on the west side of Chicago we saw the most horrific act when one of the students who came home from college was having a health crisis mentally, his neighbor came to his defense and they both ended up dead and so we are going to change that in the city of Chicago, we are going to make sure that police officers can focus on the most serious violent crimes, in which 40 percent of those violent crimes actually occur in six percent of the entire city is right and so making sure that we're responding not only equitably but we're doing it strategically, that's how we start to move toward a better, stronger security for Chicago and that's what I'm committed to doing, let me, maybe you can help us, since you've been studying this issue, you've been living this issue, of course, we heard that Mayor Lightfoot lost because of crime. and a couple of numbers here, total crimes. up 41 since last year in Chicago up 45 since 2020. um and then you look at robberies 14 up 14 uh robberies up 14 robberies up 56 percent uh car thefts up one hundred two percent um like the nation uh especially uh Mayors and The district attorney is trying to deal with the increase in crime in recent years in general. it needs to be more of a focus and like you said six percent is more of a specific focus area where most of those murders take place so that you can protect the citizens in those neighborhoods what is the answer to this yeah well look , it has to be um reflects a more holistic approach, right?
So, as you mentioned, you know that the type of violence that we're seeing across the country is really a direct result of disinvestment. You know there was a scripture that was referenced above and I thank you. brother, now to mention it, you know, my scripture today is: you know where your heart is, your treasure will also be and because of this investment that we have not done what safe American cities do all over the country, they all have one thing in common. um, they invest in people and, you know, Reverend Al, I grew up in a home that was sanctified for what it is, for what it's worth, my father was a pastor and a carpenter, do you understand the pressure when his father is like Jesus?
Its alot. There's a lot of pressure, you know, but he raised us with those principles and values that we are only as strong as the person who was struggling the most and therefore when there is a particular ailment, if you don't address it, it starts to take its toll. the rest of the body and that's why my plan is a very broad public safety plan and a budget plan that gets to the root causes of the violence in the city of Chicago and the root causes that we're seeing across the country, but we're dealing with With the immediate crisis, you know, part of our Public Safety plan, we are going to promote 200 more detectives, from the rank and file, so that they can begin to solve the violence that is taking place in the city of Chicago, but we have a decree of consent that has been ignored and that is why we are going to spend to make sure that we are implementing it very quickly and so that you know again where your treasure is, of course, your heart will also be, as mayor of In the city of Chicago, I'm committed to investing in people because that's really what's going to get us out of this particular state of violence and the kind of trauma that people have been experiencing for far too long in this city, but it really has been a It's been a national problem and I'm prepared to address it head on because I have the lived experience of people across this country and especially here in Chicago that the best investment we can make, of course, is in our young people and I mentioned that before.
I have been a high school teacher, and by the way, since I didn't become a pastor, I became a high school teacher. If you know anything about 12, 13, and 14 year olds, I can definitely go to heaven no matter what, so yeah. Now I have to go back to those same students and ask them for their vote, so it's amazing how the world changes, but there is a direct correlation between youth employment and reducing violence, so I am committed to hiring young people not only for the summer. positions, but all year long we do these things, we can actually create a safer, stronger, better Chicago, yeah boy, I'll tell you what rev, in fact, was raised in a sanctified home where your treasure is there too, It will be your heart quoting Jesus.
The Sermon on the Mount signed him up, he signed him up and his father and I preached about a carpenter, so I know something about sanctified churches and carpenters, but let me, really, just the commissioner, the general approach to crime and and surveys They say one of the reasons the current loss was crime, it's something we've had to struggle with across the country, you know, I even had an apartment across the street from Reverend Hathy's church for a while. dealing with crime in Chicago traveling back and forth, so I know what you're talking about in the neighborhood where you come from, but there have been people in the progressives or in the center left that you and I have identified with that say deeply fund policing and I say Define policing How will you define policing in Chicago if you're mayor?
The police chief resigned yesterday. Who will help you define? Have you thought about who you would choose as police chief or the type of person he would choose? have as police chief, yeah, that's a good question, it's really about the guy, you know, my father, you know, who turned 80 last month in the middle of my election and I told him how selfish he was of his Part of having a birthday in the middle of one of the greatest times in the history of the city of Chicago, but one of the things he was very clear about raising the 10 of us, by the way, uh, Reverend Al, in a house with a bathroom, so we should share.
Later there are stories about learning to negotiate, especially with sisters, you know, but he always said listen, whatever you do, you have to be a competent collaborator and make sure you demonstrate compassion and that's what I'm looking for in the next superintendent. and that is what I will be looking for for my entire administration. Can you work with people? Can you show a level of competence? Can you make sure you're compassionate because that's how police should be? This is how our public education system should be. that's what public housing, public transportation and good jobs has to look like, you know, as we come out of history, the month of February, celebrating black history as a social studies teacher, I'm very clear about what the former slaves ask for As emancipation became a reality, good jobs, good schools, health care, transportation and housing, we can now talk properly about the environment and access to food, but we have not strayed too far from these demands and that's why having someone who is collaborative, compassionate, someone who is competent. someone who is tied to the community, someone who really wants to serve and that's what the city of Chicago deserves and that's what I'm going to bring as the next mayor of the city of Chicago and by the way, reverend, I would have become a pastor, but those are non-union positions, so if you can start the Chicago Preachers Union, then I would consider, you know, redefining my career path, now you're going to get into me, you're supposed to be mayor, not meddle in our affairs now. exactly exactly let me tell you something.
I have yet to see a deacon board that would allow a unionized preacher because the deacons at least in the churches that I think I grew up in don't believe in Kenya, so, but I'll tell you why, thank you very much for being with us and the Reverend, and I'll tell you, we've known this growing up and I know you did too, it's hard enough being a preacher's kid. but being a preacher and Carpenter's son at the same time, man, that's tough, thank you so much for being with us and good luck, hope to see you soon, thank you so much and come visit us in Chicago again and of course, reverend the west.
Chicago side, that's where Reverend Martin Luther King Jr stayed, so that's it, I'd love to see you again, thank you all again, thank you very much and tomorrow morning Joe will be talking to his opponent in the runoff on the 4th April, Paul Vallas and coming. thank you
