Walking Our Cat For The First Time • Saf & Tyler

Jun 08, 2021
Crusty has a resting homicide face. Hello friends and welcome to another video. Today we're going to do something a little dangerous... We're going to take our crusty old cat for a walk for the

first

time

. Tyler: He's very old. Safiya: Yes, Tyler: he's not a chick. Safiya: No, it's a winter chicken. So Crusty is a feral adoption, meaning he was once a feral cat that showed up outside our door and now lives with us. He was a vagabond. Safiya: Uh, what do they call them? Tyler: A prostitute. So when we took him to the vet to get his shots, because we thought he was a kitten because of his size, his adorable meow, and the fact that he still had his balls.

The vet looked at him and said, "This cat is 15 years old, he's 75 cat years old, and oh, he had a vasectomy instead of being neutered. That's why he looks like he has balls." So when Crusty was a feral and we started feeding him, he started planting himself in front of our door every night, basically becoming our cat right away. Over

time

we became more comfortable with him, we let him in. So we thought, "I guess he's our cat now," and we took him with us when we decided to move. Basically, Crusty has been an indoor cat since last fall and loves being inside.

More Interesting Facts About,

walking our cat for the first time saf tyler...

Tyler: This is his retirement community. This is your Florida. In the last couple of weeks, he's getting a little restless. Going into strange corners, like... fighting bottle caps, dust mites, and old Cheerios on the floor. Tyler: He's been shadow boxing with me. If he sees your iPhone cable, he will go in for the kill. He scratches himself and puts it in his mouth... The final straw for wanting to take him for a walk was seeing him, on the balcony, crouched, ready to jump onto our neighbor's balcony. So we wanted to find a way that Crusty could still spend some time outdoors without necessarily having to cross a five-story building.

And we've seen videos and read articles about people

walking

their cats and it seems like some people are on the "Don't try it, I just dragged my cat for half an hour" train, and a lot of people, however, are also on " Hey, this was a great idea and gave my indoor cat some good exercise and some fresh air (with a little practice), but it was good." So Tyler went to PetSmart and picked up a harness specifically for

walking

cats. The instructions say to put him in the harness a couple of times before trying to take him out with the leash.

We want to see where we can take Crusty for a walk. We'd love to take him to this nearby outdoor mall we love that's like a park without coyotes, but we want to make sure he can handle it, so today we're taking him around the apartment like it's a dress fitting. Has he already come out? Oh, he is. Hello Friend how are you? Oh, meow, man? :3 :3 :3 Let's do it. Safiya: Oh my god, he just gave me a very nervous look. Tyler: He knows something's up. Tyler: 'Okay, let's go buddy. Safiya: Do you have the keys? Tyler: ...Tyler: No.
Tyler: Yes? Tyler: Come on. Safiya: At

first

I thought, "Oh no, is this too much for him?" Crusty: *meow* o.o Tyler: I think when he was right outside the apartment door, he was a little like "Did I lose apartment privileges?" Safiya: Maybe we should move further away from the apartment. Tyler: Yeah Crusty: *meow* _ Tyler: Hey, what's up buddy? Come on. It seems like the further we get from our apartment, the quieter it gets. I think he was nervous about leaving the apartment and now he's a little curious. Here we go! We have some traveling action.
Tyler: He liked one side of him to be aware, and he also liked me to walk a little closer to him and that's where we got the best kind of "crisp trot." Good? Where he's like, "It's okay, I know what's on my right side, I know you're on my left side, you're okay. I don't know if I like you anymore, but you're okay." Safiya: Once he got to places that had more bushes and places to hide, he was actually pretty calm. It was as if he was looking around him. Oh, I think he's liking it, honey!
Tyler: Yeah, I think he loves it, actually. Every once in a while, he'd be moving forward like, you know, the little engine he could, then he'd want to stop and just be like Crusty: *meow* O_O Tyler: Hey! Oh, shoot... B-cakes, come on! I think we have to go where he goes. Safiya: There were times when he walked around a little happy. Tyler: I'm sure he'll go that direction! In fact, I think after a while he got quite used to it. Tyler: Part of walking a cat so far has been not so much "walking him," but taking him outside.
There was definitely a moment where he reached his limit and said, "I don't want to do this anymore..." Crusty: *meow*_; Safiya: Look, this is like, "Get me out of here, Mom!" Then Tyler picked him up and took him back to the apartment. Although there were definitely some ups and downs, walking with him around the apartment complex we thought he had passed a minimum threshold for liking it. It seemed like he liked Tyler: Definitely. Safiya: And besides, after we got back to the apartment, he seemed okay with it. When all else fails, he's totally fine being held in Tyler's arms, so if that's how we spend tomorrow, he's fine too.
Safiya: Then it's time to go to the mall. Tyler: Today will be the real test. Crusty, do you think you can do it? He's not fighting at all. Safiya: That's fine with him. We crisped up to cool down, more or less. He was a little anxious sitting alone, but then I put him on my lap and now he's just relaxing. When we got to the mall, he was honestly nervous at first. I was definitely nervous too. I thought, "Can we do this? Are we going to get kicked out of the mall? Will Crusty get scared and run away?" We've seen so many people walking around this mall with their dogs in their hands, on or off leash, so I'm interested to see if anyone gets mad at us for trying to walk our cat.
Tyler: Well, I mean if people are allowed to bring their dog Paris Hilton to the mall, it's like, "Why can't we take Crusty to the mall?" Safiya: It was quite empty, which is perfect for the cat to walk around. He doesn't like the font. Everyone likes the fountain, but not Crusty. Safiya: The harness was a little loose on the first day, but it just needed to be adjusted. Tyler: Yeah. Safiya: So he wasn't going down her legs. We left it and the first place I wanted to go was the Cheesecake Factory. Crunchy! Tyler: Which actually conveys the conspiracy theory that Crusty grew up in a dumpster outside the Cheesecake Factory.
One thing we learned from day one is that you can't pull Crusty, like he really has to want to walk. What would happen is we would take him from place to place, put him down and see if he liked it. If he didn't move, we would pick him up and try somewhere else. So we put him next to the grass... He didn't want to have much to do with the grass. However, I did want it all to have to do with the sushi restaurant next door. Now it's out of the burger, beer and ramen joint. I think he was just smelling the food and said, "That's where I want to go." Tyler: "There's a lot of cover.
Safiya: Exactly. Tyler: There are places I can hide, there's a fence I can sneak through." It's like he goes back to the "alley cat instincts" of him. "I need to go there. They have a food grinder. I'm a food grinder too." So we wanted to see where else Crusty might want to go. Safiya: I didn't want to go to the Apple store... Tyler: No. Safiya: I didn't really want to go see a movie, I didn't really want to go to Urban Outfitters, um, it felt medium. about sparks They have a vegan cupcake! Crusty, we know you're vegan.
Safiya: Crusty is the furthest thing from a vegan. Tyler: We all know Crusty is pretty environmental, I mean... Safiya: I don't know if he wants a Tesla... Tyler: He doesn't like Tesla? I think he's thinking about that! Safiya: Oh no, he's going for this... pipe! Tyler: He's not going to fall down that pipe. Oh no! He is thinking about it. Safiya: He didn't want to go to Sephora... Tyler: No. But the people at Sephora loved him. They started taking photos of Crusty from the entrance of Sephora. He's a big hit right now... I don't know if Crusty likes the mall, but the mall likes Crusty.
Tyler: Yeah, they love him. Safiya: They LOVE it when the cat comes out. Tyler: There are more cat lovers than you think. There are simply more opportunities for people to be dog lovers in public. Safiya: People disliked the idea of the cat being walked. In fact, one person said: "Yeah, it looks like he's getting a little fat, he needs a walk." Yes, no, they... They're right. You know, I've seen examples of people who like to drag their cat around and that doesn't seem right to me. I didn't want him to be scared or stressed. I think there were some moments where he said, "This is a lot." Loves a good bush, man.
Do you think we're done with the mall? Yes. He handled this very well, and I would get nervous every time Crusty started walking alone, and I would say, "This is the best!" I think walking Crusty was a moderate success. I think this really does a good job of getting him out, easing his distress, and getting him some exercise, as long as he doesn't completely sneak into the Cheesecake Factory and eat his food. As if he had been less feisty, less irritable. He doesn't really care about the harness or leash. I think it's more about the new environments.
Tyler: Yeah. It'll be cat to cat, like with Crusty, Crusty is pretty unique, because he was a feral and he lived outside for so long, he has a certain degree of confidence and even for him, he got to a place where he was like, "This It's not that great." I don't know if we'll do this all the time, but he would definitely do it again. Thank you all so much for watching!
