VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGi 35

Jun 02, 2021
Wow, look at the definition of the ridges on his muscles. There are a lot of subtle things going on here that are blowing me away right now. The most notable thing is how saturated the green is. Thanks to expressvpn for sponsoring this video. Until the end to see how you can get three months free for another episode. The sex artist's

ion we have Nico, we have Clint, we have me. Wren here and today we'll see a bunch of different visual effects, some shots of the Hulk. different movies that have the Hulk and compare the technology, the things they did and a whole section of the effects that you've probably seen before, but never in this context, let's start, it's this Journey to the West, it's Journey to the West.

Nico friend, it's economical Gandalf, no, uh, excuse me, look at the veins in me, this is completely CG. You have to wait, why did he make the veins and veins just disappear and the foot come out from a different place? Wait, wait, roll. that back, wait, it's like halfway through the art direction, they're okay, the foot materializes right there and the veins grow and then the foot isn't really interesting, interesting, dude, all the hair on that leg too. I know it's too real. very well done, yes, yes, I love this footshake when he gets serious, he says yes, okay, so how do you think they did it right?

More Interesting Facts About,

vfx artists react to bad great cgi 35...

Definitely with reference they had to have referenced a real footshake, you can see how he really likes the skin. it flexes over the knuckles and bones when the foot flexes and you see the veins bulge a little as the blood flow increases, that's not something you can do with basic animation, it's something we need to start using, now whether it's like surface scrolling where they're moving the geometry up and down based on a texture map and an artist just marks it by hand. There is no point in building an entire system of muscles and bones for this shot.

You can probably get an artist to just go and like it. move the mesh and geometry by hand foreign I think they probably filmed that for real how would they have lifted them? Stilts and cables so that all movement is straight. Notice how the guys use blue screens. It's like one of the most overrated things in Hollywood Productions is putting someone in a green screen suit. It's so unnecessary that he concludes yes, but they're going to rotate him. He is right anyway and you will notice the shot they took. When landing on the actual shot, they are slightly different, they reconstruct the geometry of the background roughly so that I can reproject the image and be able to animate it a little bit and animate it. the camera is a little different to give you this shot of the leg, basically the camera is raised above him, so with the exception of the main actor, this entire shot is CG, even though it is of a real plate, that plate is projected onto the geometry and then repositioned. - rendered, in essence, it's a new CG because they didn't actually have the foot there on set when they filmed the shot, so they sweetened the camera angle to show the foot in its best light, basically, exactly, yeah, It's like it's difficult. composing for something that doesn't exist, it's usually easier to just recreate the shot, oh man yeah, this is a bit of fun for you, another Stephen Chow clip, okay, Kung Pao Came Into the Fist, came out in 2002, this one is an 18 year old movie. i can vote now this is just a weird movie it's

great

it's super weird it's so good there's one thing that really stood out to me after watching it in retrospect is that it has an amazing blue screen so they bought the rights to a really old movie of kung fu and then they put Steve Odenkirk in the whole movie and they did a really good job to the point where it's like it doesn't immediately register as an old movie with a new guy in it.

I thought they shot the whole movie as is, yeah look that's what I mean, technically they shot a lot of original stuff for this movie and you can actually tell it because it has that newer aesthetic, like less grain and everything, but there's a huge part of this movie that just reused old footage and they compared it in those shots, it looks really good dude, there's a lot of subtle things going on here that are blowing my mind right now, you gotta paint that guy, he which means you have to repaint the guy behind him who is moving and also match like the movie.
What's craziest to me is that they match the quality of the movie perfectly here when he actually does something. Really interesting here they use his arms that go in front of his head and use it as a transition cloth. They actually just film different plates with the static angle of it and they set up perfectly. It's just a very classic cut. Paste it into the footage. They also set up the lighting perfectly on set when they filmed this stuff. It's like the best thing you can do to match blue or green screen images is to just make sure your lighting settings are as close as possible to the things you're going to compose is basic, they're doing basic effects here but they're very effective, yes, they are doing them very well, the artist's hand here is very skillful, this film has so many strange sequences, although, like you? remember the whole cow sequence oh boy oh my god Chick-fil-A commercial oh gee dude remember this is 2002 this is so funny everything about this is absolutely ridiculous absolutely ridiculous oh that was good foreigner are you ready for the most referenced Early 2000s visual effects shot, oh my god how do you think they did that?
Even though he's hooked up to wires and they're running around with a camera, he's just pretending to be in slow motion. Yes, that's the easiest way to do it. Fake it, what made the Matrix Bullet Dodge scene so good is the fact that it's actually moving at full speed in real time, but because of the camera settings, they can actually do it in really slow motion, It's the coat that made it, yes, sold. Yeah, while in this movie he's literally hanging on wires like I'm in slow motion, so Kung Pao is actually super inspiring to me when this came out in 2002, this is like the heyday of Sam and I just doing VFX . on our home computers and Kung Pao is like the most basic VFX technique, it's like it's some guy filmed on a blue screen and then cut and pasted into the footage, that's it and like it's a

great

demonstration of how much magic you could do with After Effects 3.0 and your PC is just a great demonstration of this is what we could be doing the limit is not our computer the limit is just our technique in our imagination and our storytelling experimental type things the second movie with Hulk was the Incredible Hulk starring Eric Norton Edward Edward Norton that's what I see Eric Norton now this is officially part of the MCU it's the second MCU movie that comes out right after the first Iron Man and they made some more creative changes, for example there are many more superficial details on Hulk's skin and he's a lot more of a badass looking, he's a lot meaner looking, but man, look at that muscle, yeah man, the veins, the muscles like he's flexing and you.
I see the muscles flexing and stuff, so it actually looks less real, although yeah, in the 2003 one he looked like a video game movie character, cow biceps, there's so much muscle detail that an Aaron Jaeger Titan Vibe has, here is the biggest difference. I'm seeing that between this and 2003's Hulk they don't care about photorealism anymore. I'm not saying they're just turning off all their shaders and just rendering it with some polygon like that still makes it look good, but it's much more painterly and animation based than trying to make it feel like this is real.
He's on set, the lighting is accurate, and sometimes he looks real, but most of the time he looks like an animated character. You know, it's like the sun is always making him angelic. while in the English Hulk the sun isn't always Edge illuminating him, it's the sun that is precisely placed in the first Hulk, it's very lit from the front most of the time, just very flat, but when you're more lit by Edge you get more definition with the shadows. and all that, I think saying not worrying about it looking real is a bit of a harsh ballpark, honestly, they're taking it into account, they're prioritizing a stylized look over pure photorealistic scenes, you're right, I'm oversimplifying. and because at the end of the day they're still trying to make something look realistic, that's still the main goal in every shot is to make it look real, even if it's slightly stylized to look better hyperreal, that's all.
This looks hyper-realistic rather than realistic, so how does Mark Ruffalo compare to these other two Hulks? The biggest change from the first two Avengers movies was the fact that they actually modeled Hulk to look like Mark Ruffalo, Dr. Banner now. It would be a very good time for you to get angry, that's my secret cat. Incredible. I'm always hungry. That's the line. I'm always hungry. Then someone on the street approached me. I watch all your videos. I mean, it's really cool. Do you see my videos? Have you subscribed yet? Do they turn towards me? They leave, that's my secret.
I'm always subscribed and they leave so you can be like that cool person who's also like the Hulk and subscribe to our channel please stay pretty. green yeah, I'm actually a little surprised because they tried to make us desaturate the green to make it look more realistic, but I think the green is actually more saturated in this scene than in The Incredible Hulk, so it's still super detailed, but I feel like the physics and muscle structure are much more precise for an organism now, like you can see the muscles in their shoulder blades shaking and flexing.
Look at the definition of the ridges of his muscles, like on the left side of the screen. There we are going to see that for me it is super realistic, they actually have that poor detail all over their skin, it looks like they are wearing one of those airplane neck pillows. I'd say there's less muscle detail on this version of Hulk than the second one, but he looks better on this one, yeah the second one was too depleted for me on the muscles, you know, yeah, too much like he was in a muscle competition , they spent a lot of effort on face, yes the biggest change has to do with that face, they have a lot more facial animation points here, it looks a lot more like Mark Ruffalo, it looks more like a realistic person inside this green character , it's a very realistic end result, so it was like the first Mark Ruffalo Hulk, right, it looks great and they continue to improve little aspects of them as the movies go on, let's talk about the Avengers endgame, which had the Hulk more disheveled.
Well we all have our tasks stay down keep an eye on the clock then there's the original Hulk from the Avengers from 2012. Do you think they took the old model? You would think, and they actually thought, okay, we can reuse the original model, but all the surrounding technologies that had come this far couldn't be reused. the original Hulk asset, so they had to remake the original Hulk as close to the 2012 original as possible. Maybe smash a few things along the way, I think it's gratuitous, but whatever this all looks like, really he looks like Mark Ruffle, so between the two final Avengers. movies basically Bruce Banner figured out how to merge his personality with the Hulk.
I put the brains and the bra on and they got it and became Professor Hulk. The idea is that he has all the intelligence of Bruce Banner with the bulk of the Hulk. I mean, he would. de-hulk to go to sleep and of course he built, built a new house, does he have a new bed?, he's a rich man, he lives on a fucking flying aircraft carrier, okay, like you can really see the details in his The face now like this is absolutely 100 Mark Ruffalo with a green texture on it now essentially true obviously it's all CG but it's very much driven by the original Mark Ruffalo Knight and of course they actually have Mark Ruffalo on set to almost all scenes, etc. he's actually there acting with all the other actors and they just completely replace him with the digital version of him.
It's pretty standard practice in these movies, but it's much finer and more detailed now that all of his little micro movements are actually showing up. Now yes, you are getting like crow's feet with wrinkles on the sides of his eyes. Yes, the first two Hulks look nothing like the actor who led them, but then, even within the Mark Ruffalo versions of the Hulk, they look more and more like Mark Ruffalo. the course of movies, yes Clint, these movies are not bad, you should see them, they are actually not pretty, they are good movies. I will say it, the MCU movies are particularly The Adventuresses are works of art and they are achievements. in movies and if you consider yourself a filmmaker, you deserve to show them some respect, watch Ant-Man, sure, buy the books, whatever, Iron Man 3, buy the books, whatever, but the Avengers movies are some fantastic artwork that we are literallydoing Clint. young, I mean, honestly, for all the crap they give me for not seeing them.
I think it would be easier if I just watched them so they would stop giving me nonsense, yeah if you subscribe to the channel. I'll make Clint actually watch in the game anything, you can't make me do anything, so it's really cool to see how technology has changed over the last 18 years of making Marvel movies. Now it's time to talk about expressvpn, what is a VPN? As long as you are connected to the Internet, all those bits you send can be intercepted and read by third parties and you don't want to have privacy when communicating with the Internet, so basically a VPN just creates a small secure tunnel that runs through the Internet that no one can penetrate. with your hacking skills and of course expressvpn is the best out there, no joke.
I actually legitimately used our coupon code to buy expressvpn like I really did because I needed one. I've also used another VPN in the past and it was very slow, but the good thing about expressvpn is that it's actually very fast, so let's say there's a show you really like on a streaming platform, for example, you can't watch Rick and Morty on Netflix in the US, but you can do it in the UK, so all you have to do is change your location within expressvpn and voila, you can now watch all the episodes of Rick and Morty, so do it, since I literally didn't go to the expr ESS dot com comps team and you.
Can you get it when you sign up using the link in the description? Check it now. Return to video. Hulk smash. I've been really enjoying doing these comparison moments. One thing I want to do is compare Spider-Man 2 to Spider. -Man 2 to Spider-Man 2. We'll do that soon, but I want to see what suggestions you have. The more we do this, the harder it will be to find really juicy clips, so if you have any kind of recommendations for us. things to watch please leave a comment below we love reading them and they actually inform a lot of the clips we make for you but thanks for watching it's always a fun time doing them with you yeah next time let's do it. them every week so I'll see them next time
