US surgeon general details spread of coronavirus and debate over masks l ABC News

Apr 03, 2020
Joining us now from Washington is US Surgeon General dr. Jerome Adams Dr. Adams, thanks again for joining us. We really appreciate his time. We know how busy he is, but we want to know his opinions and some things because at the beginning it was said that it takes 15 days to stop the

spread

and then the president extended it to the end. april many people wonder what are the chances of that being enough doc well the original 15 days were designed to slow the

spread

and so we had time to reevaluate and we learned some good things and some bad things the bad things that we learned that there are places across the country, no place has been spared, no state has been spared from the spread of this disease, but the good

news

is when you look at places like Washington, can you look at places like California that aggressively mitigated in Social? distance in which they were able to level out and flatten their curves, so we're looking at the next 30 days as an opportunity for the whole country to really understand that if we do the right things, then we can flatten our curves in our different areas and actually lift ourselves up getting to the other side you asked us for 30 days will be good enough it will be for some places it won't be for others depending on where they are in your curve but the most important thing to know is if you are aggressive with the mitigation you can go to the other side and It's usually about three weeks to peak and start to see cases go down, that's the hope of the mask

debate

A month ago you initially weighed yourself and said don't shop don't wear

masks

if you're healthy and now the CDC and others are changing their recommendations so what's your position right now on people wearing

masks

who don't have symptom? thank you for the opportunity to clear the air that Robin initially, the CDC, the World Health Organization and my office recommended that the

general

public not wear masks based on the best available science at the time in terms of whether or not it prevented the wearer of contracting

coronavirus

now that we've learned about this disease and we've always said we're going to learn more, we're going to adjust and we've learned that there's a fair amount of asymptomatic spread, so we've asked the CDC to look again yes getting more people to wear masks will prevent disease transmission to others but this is the most important thing right now even if you wear masks it can't be at the expense of social distancing which we don't do I don't want people to think I'm going to cover up face so it's appropriate for me to go out with other people the most important thing right now is for people to stay home and again the cdc is looking into whether or no we should be advising more people to wear masks when they go out the final point I would say to people with masks I mean if you are going to cover your face when you go out understand you still don't need a n95 mask and if you take one of those in 95 masks you may be taking it out of the hands of a healthcare worker who desperately needs it to care for patients yeah that's a good point and i'm glad you asked that final question i was talking about how stay home but you know that's not the case across the country there are some states that haven't issued that like Florida do you think governors should have more governors in their states to have stricter guidelines on staying home House?
