Apr 21, 2024
foreigner What's going on? Everyone, welcome back to my channel. I'm starting this video a little differently and I'm going to try to show you the authentic version of my

desk

top

setup

, which right now, as you can see, is a mess. What I've noticed in my last two videos is that I haven't really put much effort into cable management and I haven't done a good job of keeping my

office

organized after what you see in the videos, so today I'm going to do my best to address that. I'll also show you some of the new things I added to my

setup

as usual just to give you more inspiration for your own setup, so with that being said, let's go ahead and get started with all the cable management. and what's inside these boxes and then we'll go from there to clean up this mess.

I wanted a fresh start so everything had to go, oh my goodness, even though this under

desk

tray worked fine for the last few years, it did. To hide my mess of cables so I had to fill the screw holes. I only used a little Minwax wood filler, but looking at this now I probably could have filled in the bleeds as well. This step is not 100 necessary, but I really didn't want to. to leave my desk a mess underneath, I remove the excess adhesive, use Gooby, a scraper and a lot of patience, my replacement cable tray is this long black metal option that I bought on Amazon.

If you also have a butcher block lid, you should use that. a bit or else you most likely won't be able to get the screw in to make sure you don't go through the entire desk, just measure the bit with the screw and use masking tape as a stopping point once the installation is complete. It was easy enough to flip the desk, not so easy. I've seen some comments asking what I do to keep my desk clean and since I had my desk away from the wall I wanted to take this moment and show you everything if that's not the case.

I know that dark board and Baton walls can collect dust quite easily, so if you don't have a rechargeable air compressor, get one. These things are a lifesaver for floors. I mainly keep them clean with a Dyson cordless vacuum and we also have an automated Shark vacuum. which runs approximately two or three times a week. I was going to say that I also use a steam cleaner for our floors, but after adding these clips I learned that you probably shouldn't use this on hardwood floors like mine, which sucks because they are so much better than traditional mops, luckily nothing It's been damaged so far, but I just wanted to keep this piece here in case anyone else didn't know.

To help keep dust out of my Alex drawers and desk, I primarily use Pledge Multi-Surface. to help attract less dust over a longer period of time because dusting all the time just sucks running cables through a standing desk is a little tricky because you have to take into account the different heights the cables have to go up so that look a bit cleaner, I added this cable management and vertebra design from Vivo, it has a bit of a cheaper plastic feel to it, but once I had it all set up it actually added a pretty sick design element to my desktop .
Don't believe me to see it in action. with this uplifting chorus sound, yes, as far as cable management goes, the first items were just the beginning, one of my biggest new additions and I mean big, as the box was five or six feet and It weighed about 30-odd pounds, it's my newest desk shelf. from hexcal, while it is overpriced and definitely not for everyone, I will say that of everything I have seen on the market, this is without a doubt the crème de la crème of desk shelves. The hexagonal scale studio measures 47.3 inches by 8.7 inches unibody unit made from durable, high-quality materials, including polished stainless steel and aircraft-grade aluminum.
Inside the box you get the basics, including the hexcal studio, two USB to bridge cables, a USB to USBC cable, cable management strips, and the instruction booklet, as I mentioned. In a previous video I want to merge design and function. In this case, the sleek, modern design blends extremely well with my entire desk setup, but from a functional perspective, this gave me the ability to do a lot of things, so let's go over everything that really makes this shelf different. its cable management area which you can access by removing the top. Inside, you'll first find the metal leg extenders in case you want it a little higher to store items like a Mac Mini under the shelf at the back of the hexcal.
The studio is where you'll find the backbone of the entire station, which has extremely clean cable management slots and a power delivery system that supports up to 14 different devices depending on how you use it. Inside this area I was able to store all the cables and power bricks so that they are no longer visible on the outside, good thing, you just have to carry it and then figure out which direction you want the cables to be routed once I have everything set up, I was able to put all my technology on my desk. I covered most of my tech options in my last video, so if you want to check it out, I'll put a link in the description.
Just relax. Another great advantage of this product is that it combines some other products. Firstly, one station includes a wireless charging area on the left side which gave me the ability to ditch my phone charger and meant one less cable for me. It also includes a 16 level light that you can technically use to eliminate the need. for a monitor light that said I still kept my BenQ light mainly for the backlight part if you use your desk setup a lot at night it is definitely recommended to have some type of light to help with eye strain there are many options with the hexagonal home light systems so you can play with it and even save your favorite settings to avoid having to reset them all the time.
Finally, hexcal also features some additional USB charging ports, as well as two USB bridge ports overall. I love this edition and hope to see more. options like this in the future, especially now that my setup has grown so much that cable management continues to become a bigger and bigger item. A new tech addition to my setup comes from Razer's newest low-profile keyboard, the deathstalk or V2 Pro, which literally just launched. at the end of July, so I'll walk you through the unpacking process so you have a better idea of what's inside. This option can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0 which you can use to switch between different devices or you can connect it with the hyperspeed wireless dongle which is all about low latency Razer started getting into lower profile keyboards with designs modern and stylish and I'm all for it, the battery life here is about 40 hours so I don't have to charge it very often.
The main reason I love it is because of the low profile design. I really liked the black option with green and black light. The ABS keys are of very good quality. Personally, I really like the typing experience with them, especially because they are not noisy and I also realize that I am someone who will always want a full keyboard mainly because of the number of times I have to enter data for work. My main complaint here is the lack of Mac OS support. This keyboard can be modified using the Razer Snaps 3 software, which is unfortunately only compatible with Windows.
I really love this keyboard, so if Razer is looking at this, consider giving options to Mac users as well. That said, I 100% understand that this keyboard is also developed for gamers where I plan to create a custom keyboard. PC soon, so I wanted to show you some of the other features real quick, since I mentioned that this keyboard is all about low latency by using low-profile optical switches with zero debounce delay and a hyperspeed connection of less than a millisecond outside of that. It features a really nice aluminum alloy multimedia button and multi-function roller. In fact, I prefer this keyboard much more than the MX mechanical keyboard.
I really hope they eventually come out with Mac OS support to go along with my new keyboard. Grovemade hooked me up with a few new additions, including this full-size handcrafted leather and walnut wrist rest that goes perfectly with my walnut wood top and the whole black aesthetic I have in almost every corner of my

office

that helps me with all my pending tasks. and the ideas I've been thinking about, I was also sent this matte black pen with walnut holder along with the dotted notebook. I specifically chose the dotted version because outside of the to-do list I prefer to get some of my ideas out.
Next up is an upgrade I have wanted to do for a long time but price was always a factor for this one and that is I finally got the Herman Miller chair in the body. The chair comes fully assembled but of course it didn't fit. I walked through it through my office door, so I had to unpack it in the hallway. Thank you. There are a lot of great reviews on YouTube that you can find about this chair. Now I understand the commotion. Maybe I'll do a more in-depth review on this later, but The best way I can position it for this chair, it just feels right.
I was able to make several different customizations although I didn't really have to take it out of the box, but after doing so, it was able to fit my back perfectly, which was exactly what I was looking for for most people. I understand. The price is a little high for this one, but someone once mentioned to me that you only get a spine as someone who has been dealing with back and posture issues. with my last few chairs it was worth it for me but other than that the back of this chair just looks amazing and adds another design element to the overall aesthetic of my office, besides the price this chair is almost perfect in my opinion, foreign yes Any of you have seen the videos in my smart home series.
I'm working on automating as much as possible, including the curtains in our house, so I finally decided to change the curtains in my office. The curtains I currently have are the heavy options that I have to open and close manually. Which, as all of us lazy people know, is the worst, plus there's always something that breaks, including this, so I decided to try a brand you can find on Amazon called ulax or yolax. I'm not really sure, basically, I just needed to know the inner dimension. of my window and choose the style and color I wanted, super easy, you just need to mount the top brackets a few inches from each side and then push the blinds in once installed.
I just needed to use the pre-programmed remote to get So this version is the rechargeable option. I only have to charge it every few months using a USB cable, which is much better than having an exposed cable all the time. These require an Amazon device that has zigbee, it is not very easy to get. Set it up with Alexa, but it's not really a problem once you read the instructions and again you still have the remote in case you don't want to use Alexa. Once I got everything set up, I was able to set it to an automatic opening time.
I open it slightly at dawn to give my plant some sunlight and then close it at dusk for privacy. I also have a command for when I have a certain visitor that will open the blinds slightly so I can guard our neighborhood like a chosen hawk. Dexter is here and now it's time to tackle the biggest monster in my office, the general section that I haven't treated with much respect. I'm talking about my super messy and completely disorganized Alex drawers, and no, I actually did. I'm not modifying this to make it look worse, it's literally the worst it's been because we've been pretty busy these past few months, so after watching a bunch of videos, I decided to try a few different methods for organizing these drawers Alex. and see what works best for me before continuing.
Yes, I know some people don't like Alex drawers, but honestly, I haven't had any problems with mine. I like the look I get, which is overused in desktop setups, but for me it becomes the job done and I like mine, as do my cable management. I wanted to start from scratch. I first started by removing everything and placing everything on a table after everything was ready. The method I chose was to group everything by category and eliminate things that I knew I needed to go somewhere else or that just wouldn't bring me much joy as some foreigners would say.
The advice I learned was that if everything has a home it will be easier to keep it organized, so I decided I wanted to custom make the drawer where I kept some of the tools I used.frequently in my office. I wanted to do this by making custom dividers along with using Kaizen film to get started. I laid out everything to have a better idea of where each item was. I custom made the dividers using two inch poplar wood that I purchased from Lowe's. I chose to cut them with slots so they could fit together and keep them sturdy but removable if needed.
There are better ways to cut the slots, but all I had was my miter saw, so I made it work. I still wanted it to look like part of my office, so I painted each piece by hanging them on a small nail in an area where they won't be visible and spray painted them using matte black paint, obviously I probably should have opened the garage door a little more for ventilation and maybe I should have used gloves, but I mean, art is art. I also added a rubber mat to the bottom of the drawer to add a layer of protection and keep everything from sliding around too much.
What I was most excited about here was trying Kaizen foam for this project for those of you who don't know that Kaizen foam is basically multi-layered foam that you can trace and trim the item you want to place by removing layers of foam. It is mainly used for tool storage and in factories to help ensure tools are never lost, but I wanted to try it in my office. I would use the Kaizen foam to fill the entire drawer, but in my case I only had a few slots that I wanted to use it in, so I started by cutting the first slot and since this version was quite thick I was able to break it. half to reuse at another time.
Then I traced the screwdriver that my dad handmade by me, I will post videos on my Instagram and Tick Tock for those of you who want to see more content. Then I started cutting layer by layer depending on how deep I wanted it to sit. I then repeated this step with my pliers. It actually became a little addictive doing this once I started getting used to the foreigner, which I knew would be the heaviest one you should keep. I wanted easy access to all my USB cables, so I bought this acrylic divider from Amazon and filled it up.
With the USB essentials overseas to make sure each cable had its own defined place, I bought this pretty cheap label maker that I'm pretty sure was like $10 or $12 and labeled each one. I'll leave links in the description below for everything you've seen in this video today, if there's anything I'm missing let me know in the comments, honestly you get to a point where you just want to label everything after you start doing this Please don't forget it either. Congratulations to Dexter on being promoted as head of security for my office. He has done a fantastic job.
I have never been more sure. Surprisingly, Kaizen foam is not the cheapest item for organization, so an alternative I wanted to try was using foam mats that I purchased. at Michael's craft store. Not only did I want to try this as a method of organizing my Alex drawers, but I also wanted to see if I could turn it into some sort of showpiece with my Apple products, just like with my other drawer. I laid everything out on the mat to determine my layout. Once I figured out what I wanted to do, I traced it all out and cut it out.
If the products here were a little thicker, you could technically glue some pieces of foam together and cut them out. There, this process required quite a bit of concentration and some time and wasn't as easy as the Kaizen movie, but it was still relatively satisfying, especially for the price. Thank you. Another trick I learned was that you can use a different colored foam for the base. area I attached using spray adhesive so that when you remove an item it will more easily show as a sign that it is missing. I use a light gray here, but I suggest a brighter color if you want it to stand out more.
This was my first attempt. with it, so I feel like I have room for improvement, but overall I was pretty happy with this method. Foreign Shores actually became a huge project for me because I wanted everything to be functional and sustainable from an organizational point of view over time, so I do it. I plan to continue testing various methods and make a full video on this at some point in the future, so if you want, be sure to subscribe to my channel below if that's something you'd like to see or let me know in the comments What else?
Would you like me to cover it in future videos? With that, that concludes my

dream

desk setup for 2022. Thanks for watching this video. I have a wedding to prepare for, so I'll see you guys later. Thank you.
