May 31, 2021
Hello creative weirdos, welcome to another Mr. Kate Decorates. This is a room for

tween

s on a

budget

and this video is sponsored by The Art Institutes. Which is awesome because we're going to have a very creative weirdo in this room since we're on a limited

budget

. We're working with Bennett and she's in her room like The Tween is, but this room wasn't always hers because it actually used to belong to her older sister, who tragically passed away from leukemia. So obviously this has been a big deal for the entire family and they just haven't had time to prepare this

bedroom

for Bennett and have her voice in there, as well as honor her older sister, etc.

Do you have a favorite color? I like many colors. Okay, that's great. Kate likes many colors. Yes me too. You're more the musician. You create the art of hearing. Yes, not the art of the eye.

Give it to mom. Creative weirdos in three, one... two... three! Creative weirdos! So, my goodness, she's amazing. Yes. Mom is amazing. I don't know, I just want to make sure of that in that room. We like to honor Arbor because she is obviously still part of the family even though she is no longer physically with them. And we also celebrate Bennett as an individual. Yes, and you are an older sister. Arbor was an older sister. You want to keep that big sister love going and I'm sorry, I don't know, it just excites me. I can't imagine my life without my sister.
It makes me so

emotional

to think about everything that Bennett and the family in general have been through. Then I do not know. This is like a very special project for me personally. So obviously I want to make sure that Bennett likes that Lia, his mother, feels like we have Arbor represented in the room as well, you know, in spirit and just, yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay, obviously this is a very

emotional

situation. I really want to make sure we honor Bennett and give him an incredible room while also making sure we keep Arbor's memory alive in that space.
So this is a tall order and we are limited by our $300 budget. So we have a lot to do, we have to go shopping. We have to come up with the plan, but first I'm going to get in there and really just figure this out. Come on. Alright guys, we have a lot to do here. Now, get to know Bennett's style. She wants something clean, organized and with a bohemian touch. Obviously we have that DIY macrame thing she started making, so I'm going to follow suit and break down what we have. She's already here, obviously we have this bed.
Right here you come in and see that this bed feels like we should center it a little bit more. I want to divide the keyboard, the desk, the dresser and all that. Right now I feel too heavy on one side and then the other. This comfortable Hmm. It's going to be hard. It's very clumsy. It's on the way to the closet. The style is kind of, you know, old school. I know she really wants a more updated, organized and clean space, so that might be the only thing that gets started. But we definitely need to use the bed we are going to use. her desk.
She also has a TV and her record player and everything. As for entertainment, try to make sure we include that on the TV, it's not my favorite item to decorate with. But we'll see if we can integrate it and obviously make sure we have the music. be a complete moment. Because she loves music, so we definitely have to celebrate it here, but I definitely want to make this wall a moment. Like I'm thinking of some kind of build here that Joey will be great at. There is also a lot of clutter here. There are many stuffed animals, etc., which is a very common thing to find among teenagers' rooms.
Since we have to take out all this stuff to redo the room, I'm going to encourage Bennett that she just goes through some of this stuff. Maybe she wants to donate some of this stuff so we can bring back the stuff that's left. Which always look cleaner and better because that's the look she's going for. So there's a lot to do obviously this is just kind of a normal sized preteen room with a lot of stuff in it and of course we have our budget that we have to stick to so I have to go find Joey because this isn't going Let's keep it easy, guys, Joey Joey Hello everyone, I want to tell you. about today's sponsor at the Art Institute.

Hi Joey Hi Kate Okay, now let's talk about what I want to do or something like something built into the wall. So we definitely have to go to the hardware store and buy probably a sheet or two of plywood. .
Well, I want to paint a wall. We will only get one liter of paint to save budget. So we'll have to pay a visit to the hardware store. So I think I might want to take the golden ticket for this one. That?! 100 dollars So you're officially getting it now, do you know that? Well, I'm kind of mapping out in my head The golden ticket is for Kate. I think we said the rule is once a year. I don't know where we've been. Didn't we say that? Definitely last year, but I don't remember that part either. Well, she's allowed to get the golden ticket once a year where she gets an extra hundred dollars, okay?
So what are the things we need to achieve? So we have to get I want to get a dresser. I want to get him a side table, and I'm thinking we'll go to the Swedish Mega Store. For that. I want to make a hanging lamp next to the bed, where they have those lighting kits that are really inexpensive. There, the fun details find their way to second-hand stores to, obviously, DIY. He loves music. I already ordered some small instruments for her online. At the thrift store we need a desk chair for her. We need a desk lamp.
We need to bring some lighting there. Okay, let's go to the thrift store first. We help schools and youth programs, one sale at a time. Wow! Oh my god, I love it. Joey. Can we get these? Oh yes, I would show them off. Would you wear these? Joey! Are you feeling the hype? They are too small. They are not very small. Take them off. Joey all frames for sale. Wait. This one is perfect actually. Wait, because I have that piece of art that I made for Well, it's a very special piece of art. You will see it, but I already painted it because I wanted to take more time and I think it would fit perfectly here.
Soccer ball. So I have to be careful because she already has a lot of those, like soccer trophies, which I think are cool and golden. Then the brass ring will look great and she wanted to decorate with those trophies. So we're looking for accessories, more like storage items, that we need to make this an organized teen room. Cool pop. Those are cute. Maybe expect some pen and pencils on her desk. Mm-hmm How cute That reminds me that we should give him some notebooks Mr. Kate's Notebooks. Yes, we should Soccer ball What? Look, those are our pastel colors.
We're doing like the ball guy, the soccer ball thing, a dollar. They are like fancy little trays. This little shopping basket here. Look how cute Lantern with candles Yes From one thrift store to the next They have a sink. Do we need a sink? No, but that's great. Look at this cute pharmacy. That is cute. Okay, do we like that little guy or what's up with this little guy? Six dollars. Oh perfect. Smaller things are not necessarily cheaper. Oh wait, look Joey. That 2.99 for sure. Joey looks like the smallest writer. Forget smartphones, but it's $99. Oh, maybe we can negotiate it to be 99 cents.
Alright. I love those things we have, but now we have to go to the hardware store to buy plywood that you like. everything as incorporated And then we also have to stop at the Swedish hypermarket Good And that chest of drawers and a side chest The bedding there, as if it were beautiful and expensive bedding Great Doing it, we are doing it, we are doing it well. See you at his house. Okay, I don't know how to play one of these things. This is Joey's job. But guys, the cute little instrument I ordered online is here.
So these will go on his wall as accents. because she loves music. So now she has options when her friends are visiting. They could form a band, I don't know. She wanted to show you some of the decorative things. Look at this cute rug. It's like a runner rug because we obviously don't have the budget for a big rug. But this will go in front of her bed and it will be very pretty. I love the colors and then I bought this duvet cover that I'm obsessed with. It has like these beautiful fan-shaped types of flowers.
How cute and what else are plants from the hardware store, you know, I love a dripping plant. This is a beautiful ivy this light kit. I think it's really great as a bedside hanging situation. Obviously we got the one from the thrift store for the desk lamp, so we're good. Let's jump in and get started, we have a lot to do. Joey! Can you help me download? Why do you match me all the time? Oh my God, you agree with me. I'm the one who woke up with pink hair and you decided to match me. What's going on, Joey?
We're not going to paint this wall. Yes Yes. Yes, now we are retouching. Did you see that we agree? Yes, I get it, we are invested. I understand. We are opposites, opposites attract, blah blah blah, let's focus. Okay, we have a lot to do, it looks much better now. She's already cleaned up that mess, so she already has access to her closet. Curtains Of course, we will keep the blinds with curtains around them. Yes, we will use her desk. She already has the desk chair that we got and then on top of the desk. I want to celebrate her love for soccer.
I have a DIY plan for that. It will be like a whimsical version of football. This is where you will really shine. Plywood project. So we have the beautiful blue paint color that we will do on this wall. So just paint this wall. We don't have the budget to paint this entire room, the ceilings are too high. Show me because you wanted to remove a little bit and that shows me what you're thinking. Well, this is what I'm thinking. This will be the entire wall of the bed. So you're going to build around the three drawer dresser here and then go up again and make something like a little side table next to the bed.
Inside the side. The table will be a small U-shaped nesting stool. She can remove it, then we'll go up around the bed and make a little shelf there. I'll put a hanging plant over here I'll make a macramé here down down down down down up again over that two-drawer dresser here Up againhere. Boom. Boom, another U-shaped nest stool here and this one you can stop and use with your keyboard. You got it? I hope I can translate that. Can. We are a good team, right? So, I guess you can't guess what I'm doing, okay? So, obviously, Bennett started that macrame project in his

bedroom

.
She had this little DIY project, which we're going to take a cue from since she likes macramé. She likes bohemian accents. and give it something a little bit bigger and obviously we're bringing more colors in here and we're using this really cool natural stick that you can find in a backyard near you. Now that you see where this is going. Now we have to tie them all together. Now that I've tied my first knots, I'll show you this box knot. Basically you take four strands and you kind of make a four over them and then you take the fourth one and you wind it up and back.
So, you pull out the tail and there's your first knot and then you just pull it up. Now we have to do the same, but in reverse. So where you did the four on one side now, you're going to do the four on the other side. It's basically just a mirror image of what you just did. Go up to my room in the middle here up and around pulling Okay, I've got my first row of box knots done. Now let's move on to the second row and this is what you're going to do until you're done.
Are you going to take two pieces for the next row? You will take out these two pieces and then grab all four. that's here to continue the knot and go all the way and then when you come back for the third row, you're going to pull out another two to make your row and that's going to create this kind of downward angular shape for the knots. You guys don't have to see all that to see how Joey is doing. Alright guys, it's that time again. Time to get serious about power tools. We are doing two big projects.
I have a quarter inch piece of plywood and then I have a larger 3/4 inch plywood. The first is the first. We are making the soccer ball. I've already measured it. But basically you just take a ruler like this. Put a small screw in there so you can keep it centered and just draw a circle with your pencil. Leave your saw in the same place. Goaaaaaaaaal! I'm going to sand the edges with some sandpaper and then Kate will somehow turn this into a soccer ball. We'll see. Alright, next one. We got that great model built in the football era!
In fact, I'm terrible at sports. Fortunately, this is a DIY game, not a sports one. Well. So Joey cut this out and it will be our soccer ball artwork for the wall. Now, we keep it all kinds of bohemian with the accents because that's what Bennett likes. What Bennett Likes Bennett gets for this room, especially because instead of doing the traditional black and white, I really love this wood grain. It is so beautiful. And it looks very natural and peaceful. So we'll keep it that way. However, I will turn it into a soccer ball using some moss.
A budget saving tip for you when you have something with a beautiful natural wood grain. Instead of buying a can of stain, you can improve the look of the wood by using a little cooking oil. Also, we're playing with perspective so the lines aren't totally the same size so it looks like everything is on the wall. This is like a full 3D situation now, but I hope she likes it. What do you think? Oh my god, how cool. So now we just need to put some mounting hardware on the back and place it on the wall.
It's a joke. Now it is a work of art. More laps. Alright guys, your stools are ready. Oh okay guys, I knew after I met Bennett and her mom and we decided to do this room for her that she really wanted to do a very special piece of art in honor of Arbor, her sister, that obviously this used to be her room and now it by Bennett. moving So I spent some time at home creating this watercolor piece and basically my inspiration was The two as sisters. I'm going to try not to get emotional about it, but Bennett obviously loves music and Arbor.
Her name is a tree. . So that was kind of the inspiration for all of this. And I like the idea that I've never cried while she was talking about it and obviously the musical notes are now on the tree. So it's like the idea of her memory living on through the music that Bennett plays. in her room And the musical notes continue. Ah OK. I'll stop talking about that because I need to get into the frame and the wall, but that's the whole rant. Okay, here comes the vintage frame. Alright guys, I'm almost done here. I want to leave Bennet a few last things, some gifts.
These are all our Mr. Kate stationery items. This is a small card game. Everyone is different inside. Of course, they are all painted and drawn by me. These are our puffy stickers, which are the moon and make an amazing accessory for pop up plugs. Just saying, and then we have the notebook package, which I'm really excited about. This is the new Bennett. He's the first person to get them, but I'll show you the inside. They are so cute. We have the definition of a creative weirdo and everyone inside says: Stay creative. Stay weird. Stay. I'm going to repackage them and leave them as a surprise for Bennett on his desk.
I think it's a little extra surprise. But guys, I think we're done here. This was a very special room. What do you think? As usual, we played with Floorplan and moved his bed out of the corner to create another moment in the middle of the room. The biggest difference here obviously came from this amazing built-in that I think gives the room such a personalized touch. look and guys, it was cheap and Joey only needed plywood, some screws, a drill and paint and that gives him a place to display all his trophies because wow he has a lot of trophies, Bennett accessories and obviously this bedding is contributing some color , but it is a very quiet room.
I know Bennett wanted something peaceful with bohemian accents and really just an organized look and now we have our amazing macrame there. We took Bennett's DIY example and are now amplifying it. finishing what he started I love the hanging lamp there. Obviously it's a really fun way to have a bedside lamp and there's a little switch on for her to turn it off and we have the stools here as part of this built-in design So when? she has her friends there, she can take them out for extra seating and obviously use the one there for the keyboard and she has this big closet here with sliding doors.
So we mounted the TV in her closet, which is much nicer. use of space now The TV is just not in the room She can close the closet when she's not looking at it, open it and watch it directly from her bed, the whole music area. With her keyboard, her discs are close to her. I think it's super inspiring there And obviously the main art above the keyboard is in honor of Arbor and her memory in this room and just celebrates the music that Bennett will play and yes, we have her desk here, ready for the task Because she's a preteen , a growing preteen and has a lot of homework and a lot of growing to do in this room and honoring her love of soccer.
I'm obsessed with the small soccer ball. I love how she turned out. And of course, we have things in our thrift store like hello, popcorn. I put her wand in the popcorn container. I mean one of my favorite moments. Alright guys, I think it looks really good here. I'm so excited for her and her mom to see this room and I really hope they love it. So, oh, okay. Now close your eyes, we'll put you in the room. You've seen the drill. Very good on the count of three. One two three! Oh my god, oh my god, I know there's a lot to take in when you first open your eyes.
OMG, that was inspired by the DIY you started. Oh yeah. I mean, obviously this isn't the same one. Yeah, I was inspired by that and then I looked at that. You like that? That is so cute. Oh, it looks like a soccer ball. I'm shaking it a little. I'm shaking too! I get so excited No, this looks much better than I expected. I had no idea it would look like this. It looks so good. I love decorating with gold and thank you for being such a winner. I think they are mostly. Participation We find a place to put your TV where it doesn't have to be outside in the room to watch.
So I painted this for you obviously, but also for Arbor for her memory, right? My interpretation of this is that instead of the notes being on the staff, they are on the tree. So it's like you keep her memory alive with your music. Thank you. So you don't have a stool here, but we have these little things hidden away. Also for your friends to hang out. There too, so you can take it out and you can sit down. Yes, and you can save it. to make it easier to get around here. This is so Wow. I've been having dreams like, oh my god, what will it look like?
There have been so many things and this seems so much better than anything else. I'm so happy you like it. Should we show it to your mom? ? Yes, did you give him the Mr. Kate treatment? Yes, one, two, three and open! Oh my gosh, I did this art in watercolor because of course we obviously wanted to make sure that the memory of Arbor in this room is still there. You have a clean desk to work on for all that homework you just started. The notecard set you'll love decorating with these All the little touches. I love the trophy rack Yes, and I think having the bed open like that makes it cozier.
So when your friends are at home, you stay on the bed as if you have both sides to access it, plus the stools and your chair, like now. You have seats or they can even be side tables for drinks, etc. We also did all this for $400. We had $300 and Kate pulled out the golden ticket which gave her an extra hundred dollars. But she wanted to buy you the new dresser and side table and the nice bedding. Thanks, it looks fantastic. It's amazing. I'm very glad you like it. We'll leave you here because this is it, we're done.
Enjoy, thank you very much Bennett. Thank you. This was so special. You guys enjoy it. It's just fantastic. Okay, yes, yes. Bennett loved it. That was very special. Obviously, this was a very emotional episode for me. I am an older sister. And you know, I took this very seriously to make sure that room was special to Bennett and also honored Arbor's memory. So I'm still happy. that she liked it and her mom liked it and everything Guys, a big round of applause for Kate, that was a great room. A round of applause for Joey for that addition.
I like that it was great. A big round of applause and many thanks to the Art Institutes for sponsoring today's video. Art Institutes weird and creative creatures. Yes, perfect. The best way to have it Follow us on social media, guys! For more inspiration, I post a lot of photos and stories and everything behind the scenes. Make sure you follow and subscribe too because we really need to grow our family of creative weirdos, why not? The sun is out, we're done. They were happy. So I'm happy and I cried like five times today. We'll do something tonight.
It won't make you cry, a good dinner. Okay guys. Alright, be creative, be weird, be. See you next time. Goodbye This is the smallest stool ever. How nice. I'm Mr. Kate to proclaim my love for thrift stores. Thank you. That's what you do on a stool, make announcements.
