today's text is Luke chapter 10 verse 38 to 42 and I want to share this scene with you in an appropriate way let's really have a great time good today. This is a practical message and a fun little story that Luke put in his gospel account and since we're talking about this thing about

, I think we not only have to look at that in the deepest sense, but just in the simple, everyday ways that life hits us and hurts us and makes us sensitive and susceptible, so this passage is interesting for that purpose, let me read it now Luke chapter 10 verse 38 While Jesus and his disciples were on the way , he came to a town where a woman named Martha opened her house to him and then they were on their way to Jerusalem actually for a trip and that's where Jesus was always heading, he was always heading to the cross, no matter what he was doing, yeah He is healing people, he is heading to the cross, he is focused, he knows his ultimate goal and that is why no one could divert Jesus from the path or the mission because he knew what he came to do and he knew that that meant suffering and he I knew that meant leaving out certain things and people's agendas and maybe not necessarily living up to their preferences.

He was headed to Jerusalem, but many things happen along the way. How many know that many things happen in life? Things happen along the way. It would be a fun little Bible study for you. At some point Lisa just circles every time in the Bible that someone was on their way somewhere and something crazy happened. Something good enough to be included in the Bible happened. the road to somewhere and life is like that because some of God's greatest invitations come through life's little interruptions just put that there on

phone life is right now put it on your phone the greatest invitations from God the greatest invitations from God come through the little interruptions of life so it's like right before this story that Jesus is telling about the Good Samaritan remember you're passing through heaven and you're in a hurry to get somewhere and They couldn't be bothered to stop because they were distracted with what was on their agenda and sometimes the distraction will be what you planned and God's agenda will reveal itself in something you didn't know was going to happen and you have no margin in your life, you will go through high the things that God puts in front of you because you will be very focused on your goals and sometimes God's gifts happen on the path to your goals and you discover that He had something different in mind for your day or for your week or for your life, so okay, I gotta go a little faster NISS and then my preaching goes something like this, some of the things that mean the most are little things like that that happened along the way, so they're on their way somewhere , they arrive at a town where a woman named Martha opened her house to them.

My movies are often classified as ridiculous rr4. just the stupid things I could make up in my mind and even this week I was really afraid of something and when I actually did it I had nothing to fear, it was actually super fun when I did it, it was the best

of my week. but I did it, something in my mind doesn't make these movies in my mind because I'm a dysfunctional director and in my mind I make these movies and sometimes I edit scenes that have happened with scenes that will never happen and that's why the movie in my mind usually when I want to meet someone and I've never met them before, I just ask them what kind of music they like and then if they say I don't like music that much then I'm done. they have no soul, there's nothing else to talk about and then if they start listing, you know it was weird when your

pastor

's people would say Christian answers to everything, so you say what your favorite movies are and they start listing.

You know, it's been his 10 Commandments Facing Giants Fireproof, just recite it in every movie where someone is saved and I don't have the heart to tell you because I'm supposed to be a man of God, I don't. Christian is usually this horrible. I don't always like Christian movies. I almost never like Christian movies. Now I know this is going to be a boycott on this

icular worship experience because this is the most religious crowd I preach to. I know that on Netflix you only see reruns of Seventh Heaven, but now I say that in my personal taste I don't have much tolerance for movies where everything turns out well.

You know what I like I just like movies where at the end everyone is dead if not everyone is dead at the end of the movie I don't know why I like movies where at the end there is blood everywhere blood of the Lamb I love playing that hymn for church people. I know. I do not like movies. I was talking to some of our staff the other day about this and they were all talking about this movie. I said I hate her. movie in this Christian movie and it felt like the Antichrist because I will say I hate that movie it's too perfect everything feels good.

I like my movies raw and one of the people who were around gave me a different perspective, they said well, when I go to the movies I don't spend 54 dollars on a movie ticket so I can see more than what's already in my real life because In my real life it's raw enough that I need my movies to be rated and yet now we have to talk about the Bible. the Bible today so we came to get it, the Bible is rated G for brave, yes, yes, so parental supervision is required to access this Bible, but every now and then you see something in the Bible like what we just read, you might ask.

Why is it there if there are so many verses we can use to communicate God's eternal plan of redemption to humanity? Not a very good scene in the movie, you might want to cut that one. Luke, take it away, move on to the next part where he teaches the Lord's Prayer, the Good Samaritan. What was good in this scene, yeah, I'm kind of happy because my life. It's not always very epic. I usually don't march to the Promised Land on Monday, obviously, I sit in the carpool line or send Holly to sit in a carpool line.

Let's be honest, so I'm glad God put some things in the Bible. that feels relatable, I mean the most epic thing that could happen to me this week. I could gain five more pounds on the bench press, which might be my most epic achievement this week, probably not. I have something on my shoulder, so the most epic thing that happened to me last week. This is a good Scripture because the most epic thing that happened to me last week. What I need for my life is not how to deal with epic situations but just everyday situations in artha terms. She is not mentioned. her husband she manages but when Jesus rebukes her he is correcting her distracted focus and verse 40 is important, let's read it she got distracted not by Candy Crush or Instagram but by all the preparations that had to be made and we know that Jesus He wants to eat. something and he corrects her for cooking for him that is strange to me that he rebukes the person responsible and as I reflected on it I began to see myself in Martha instead there was nothing really wrong with her actions what Jesus was correcting was her attitude she was distracted look this because of all the preparations that had to be made someone had to do it it was not what she was doing Jesus was not angry with Martha because she was busy in fact the reason he liked her house is probably because it was clean and the reason The reason he was clean is because she doesn't sit down and pray 23 hours and 59 minutes a day, but her attitude in this passage is what I want to see.

Don't I give you five things today and a little seminar format that will help those of you who feel distracted, the literal meaning of distraction is separated, what a great picture it is, that inside every mind that is trying to listen to me today there is a series of priorities that try to take them in different directions, that's why I would really do it. I want to apologize for the preachers who don't know what the real world is like, the preachers who don't understand that if you are going to provide for your family, sometimes it will mean that you may not be able to be at church every weekend. I get it, I get that this is a priority for you, but I get that you're not perfect and that the manipulation that happens sometimes, even religious manipulation, can make you feel. I will not be filled first I will be ministering and living in emptiness and when I am living in emptiness I am divided I am distracted I am needy and I am and I am and I am living I am living my life at the level of what I expected, that is the final element of this passage What I want to mention is the expectation because as we think about the movie in our minds and we have spelled the word movie now with these different attitudes in this passage to realize that it is not what is happening in our lives many times, it is what is happening in our lives compared to the way we write them in our minds Martha Martha I know you expected married to help and I know you expected me to make Maria help but don't move Maria, you're in the right place, she's sitting at the feet of the Lord. doing what listening you can't interpret what God is doing if you never stop talking and listening and hearing what Jesus wants to do what you want that's what I need to ask see what you're doing right now what's important right now the contrast is not between work and worship the contrast is between Minnie and one Jesus said Martha you worry about too many things you are doing too much you would be extra right now Martha and there is only one thing needed at this time there is only one thing needed at any given time and wisdom is to discern that, but to discern that, let me show you what you can't do and bring me a lot here, thank you, just put it there in that place and I want to show you. where Martha was sitting with her thank you I appreciate you I know you didn't have to do it but you wanted to appreciate because in Martha's mine she was directing the movie and really she was just an extra let me break this down and then we'll go and get distracted and we'll go back to our crazy lives and we'll go back to our crazy minds and worry about stupid things, but for a moment while we're here now I want us to think about the inclusion of this seemingly insignificant story in the Bible about two women fighting, call Hollywood, which will make a original script, no, no, this is just one scene because a little later, Mary and Martha will call Jesus to return to Bethany.

The Bible says that when Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, Martha heard verse 20 of John, chapter 11, that Jesus was coming and I love this contrast. He went out to meet him but Maria stayed at home with her hand on her hip waiting on the road for this rabbi who came and ate my food but did not appear to heal my brother and while she had her hand on her hip Maria's head was on his pillow Mary hasn't even gotten out of bed Mary is still crying Mary appears and says to Jesus you're not very good at this Lord if you had been here my brother wouldn't have died didn't you get the script you were supposed to be? here for at least four days and here now you are late and I expected you back then and you just show up now, but I know verse 22 that even now God will give you everything you asked for, she is still trying to work with Jesus, you know how Hello when I start shopping in her it's like you are so strong how you carry so many bags Bassem's Mace I'm not very smart it works with me but Jesus will not be manipulated Jesus told her your brother will rise look at her she has a script yes, he will rise in the resurrection on the last day I already read that part because I wrote the script Gus this is my movie I know what is supposed to happen this is my life Mary is supposed to help and you are supposed to heal and I know how this is going Jesus told him I I am the resurrection and the life and he who believes in Me will live even if he has died so Mary wrote a healing script Martha wrote a healing script Jesus flipped the script and gave them something greater than they could know expect or request or guess that they won't be happy with it you're not happy with the fact that you don't have to direct this movie you don't have to make the movie you don't have to imagine Find out how it ends.

Remember when we were watching that Quentin Tarantino movie, the edited version of Halle and it seemed like it was going to have a certain ending and you asked me who made this movie again and when I told you who made it you said oh? I know how this ends because if I know who made it I said yes I know who made it yes I know who made the movie I know how this ends and I declare in the name of Jesus today your movie does not end like this your movie does not end in shame and your movie does not end this race but Martha Martha for Jesus to do what he wants to do you will have to stop being the director you will have to sit like this sometimes like Mary I believe There is a Mary in all of us who knows where to sit and knows what is important and who knows how to walk in step with the Holy Spirit and I believe there is a Martha in all of us who means well but tries to do too much and have a heart like Mary in a world like Martha sometimes you have to be misunderstood and sometimes you will have to make decisions about what's important to you that doesn't align with what seems to be important to this pill-popping world and sometimes you'll have to say things about our family and our commitments and things that people will misunderstand.
