He cannot go down or up at that time. Joe didn't know if Simon had fallen. off the cliff with it or if he had cut the rope but the rope was still tied around his waist and was going up and out of the ice crack, so he grabbed it and pulled on it until it all fell back down and he saw it was frayed and sure enough , Simon had cut the rope now, although Joe was not angry with Simon for the decision he made because he understood that it was the right one. As he went in there was a hole that led back up the mountain and sure enough he crawled out and fell and the sun is shining on him and he remembers lying on the mountain looking at the sun and laughing, he couldn't believe it. but after the initial relief of not dying wore off, he realized that he wasn't out of danger, but he still needed to get down the rest of the mountain and there wasn't much left to climb. He was towards the end and that was it. He was so steep, but after that he would have to navigate five miles back to base camp, but for several delirious, painful, miserable days, he managed to drag himself to base camp and arrived there just as Simon was packing up the tent and getting ready. to leave he couldn't believe he saw joe alive joe said simon he just swore he just swore incessantly he was cursing he couldn't even talk he didn't understand it was like he was looking at a ghost but after that kind of
