Nowadays, it seems unfathomably dangerous to simply jump into a stranger's car or, conversely, for a motorist to pick up a random stranger on the side of the road, but back then

A man about a few years old seemed harmless enough, he stopped when he saw the signs and parked on the side of the road, maybe 15 feet ahead of where they were, so Mary's companions stayed where they were and Mary ran towards him. light. blue van and she looked out the passenger side window that had been rolled down and asked this guy, hey, can you take the three of us? We're going south and this man was looking at her and saying, "I can only take you." a ride I can't take the other two I can only take you and then Mary is confused because she's looking at this guy and she's looking at all the space in his truck and she's thinking to herself, you know why I'm just They're allowed to go when they're going to the same place I'm going and there's plenty of room in this van, but when she gently pushed this man and said, "Well, you know, are you sure you're not?", you don't mind taking. them too he just said look I'll take you I won't take them and then mary said okay wait let me go back and get my bag so he stays parked she gets out of the truck and runs back to the other two people. was and you know she explains the situation and they tell her you know, Mary, this is not good, there is clearly something fishy with this guy, but Mary, even though she also shared these kinds of reservations about this guy, she was so desperate to get home.

She was so homesick that she couldn't face the thought of having to wait for another ride that might not arrive until the next day or the next because not all motorists are willing to pick up hitchhikers and she simply didn't want to wait any longer. Then she told her companions that guys, I'm going to take the trip and then she said goodbye to her two friends, grabbed her bag and ran back to the truck and got into the passenger seat as soon as she sat down and closed the door. , this man came out onto the road and started driving and then he turned and looked at Mary and introduced himself, his name was Lawrence Singleton and he was 50 years old and then Mary, you know, introduced herself and then they had a little chat. and very quickly Mary feels comfortable with Lawrence, he reminded her of her grandfather, he was very kind, very polite, so when she started to feel tired at the beginning of the trip, she said: Hello, Lawrence, do you mind if I fall asleep while you?
She was driving and Lawrence was saying no problem, go ahead and go to sleep, so Mary walked away from Lawrence and curled up in the seat and quickly fell asleep a little later, when she woke up, looked out the window and immediately realized . They were going the wrong way, so he turns to Lawrence and says, you know we're going the wrong way, and Lawrence was like, oh, you know, I made a mistake, I'll make us turn around, you know, I'm sorry, no. I had idea. but Mary is thinking to herself: we are way in the wrong direction, there is no way he could have done this accidentally, but she bit her tongue because Lawrence was actually turning around and starting to go in the right direction, so They were traveling in the right direction. direction for a moment and Mary is totally nervous, but she's careful not to tell Lawrence because she doesn't really know this guy and even though he made her feel comfortable, she just doesn't really know what his intentions are and so she was just looking at him.
They looked around quite apprehensively and then they stopped on the stretch of road that went through a fairly wooded area where there were very few cars on the stretch of road and Lawrence suddenly tells Mary that he wants to stop because he has to go to the bathroom, He wants to relieve himself and then Mary with some apprehension says yes, okay, okay, and as Lawrence starts to pull off the road, Mary looks at her feet and notices that one of her shoes is untied and instinctively Mary just she thought to herself, "I better make sure the shoe is tied because I might have to run away from this guy, but she didn't want to bend down and start tying the shoe, it was a little awkward because the space was small." And she was worried that she would be a little suspicious if she did it, so she thought, "Okay, as soon as we get out, I'll get out of the car and tie my shoe, so Lawrence stops, but he doesn't." He doesn't just stop on the shoulder of this road, he stops on this driveway which is kind of a trail into the woods, so as soon as he turned onto this road, alarm bells ring in his head.
Mary. She knows something is wrong, but she doesn't really know what to say to Lawrence because he's not talking to her and she doesn't really want to look at him, so she's thinking about what she's going to do, if she's going to run. she goes to confront him, she doesn't know, and finally, after about a minute, when they're far enough off the main road that no one on that road can see them, they're pretty far away into this forest. Lawrence stops the car and he jumps out to relieve himself and immediately Mary jumps out of the car too and bends down to tie her shoe before she could finish tying her shoe, suddenly something hit her hard on the back of the head and she left unconscious.
Lawrence had hidden a hammer next to her seat and when he got out he did not go to relieve himself, but instead walked around the vehicle and smashed it in the head when Mary also arrived and noticed that she was lying in the back of the vehicle. van. and as she looked out the windows she could see that they were still parked in the middle of the forest and then when she tried to move she realized that her hands, her feet, everything was tied to the truck, she couldn't move and So, while she wonders what is happening, Lawrence appears, opens the back doors of this truck, gets in and starts attacking her.
Mary has no idea what to do, she's a 15 year old girl and this guy is all over her and he won't stop. And then she began to quietly beg him to please stop letting me free. I will not tell anyone. She kept repeating that over and over and Lawrence never responded. She simply continued the assault for hours and hours, finally, when Lawrence tired. He got off Mary and got out of the back of the truck and turned around and climbed into one of the front seats and fell asleep and Mary probably tried to free herself from her restraints but there was nothing he could do. . the restraints were too tight and so for hours she had to lay there wondering what was going to happen to her and then, sometime in the middle of the night, Lawrence wakes up again and, without saying a word to Mary, just walks out.
He gets out of the truck and sits in the driver's seat and then drives the truck out of the forest, drives down the main road for a while until he turns onto another access road that takes them away from the main road, so it takes them away from any prying eyes and stops somewhere in this forest, in the middle of this grand canyon, Lawrence parks the truck, gets out and walks back, opens the back doors where Mary is lying moaning, crying and begging to be released. he climbs inside and his torture continues for hours and hours until the sun finally came up, at which point Lawrence stops, gets out of the back of the van and is standing there and turns to look at Mary and sticks his hand in. and he undoes her restraints so that he can free her, he takes her out of the truck and puts her on her feet on the ground and then she cries she's beaten she's bloody she doesn't know what's happening and she just tells him softly please let me free and he He says oh, you want to be freed, I'll free you and then he walks around this totally destroyed 15 year old girl and he reaches into the back of his truck where this toolbox is and he pulls out an ax and he comes back and he's standing in front of her.
Mary and Mary would have had a split second to see what he had in his hand before, in one fluid motion, he reached out and grabbed her left arm with his left hand, grabbed her by the wrist, and then raised his ax and lifted it. he lowers her onto her left forearm, severing her arm just below the elbow and then Mary falls back to the ground and looks to where her left arm was, she's shocked and before she can do anything, Lawrence just walks away. Once again and with his left hand again, he reaches out and grabs her right wrist and now Mary knows what she is about to do.
She is still holding this axe, so she screams and kicks it as hard as she can to try to get it off of her. but his grip on her is too strong and then he starts cutting into her right forearm again and again, it would take four strong blows to finally separate his right arm from her body and so Mary falls to the ground in a heap, she is bleeding profusely. screaming in agonizing pain and the only thing Lawrence can focus on is that one of Mary's severed hands was holding onto his left arm when he cut off her left hand that had been holding on to his arm and was now stuck to him and with Very indifferently he began to try to remove his hand from her arm and finally, when he let go, he turned and looked at Mary and realized that she had gone silent and was limp and was lying in a huge pool of blood, so Lawrence put up the bloody hand.
The ax went back inside his truck and then he walked over to Mary, grabbed her, and began dragging her about a hundred feet down the road from the truck. There was a sewer. A culvert is a large tunnel that runs under roads and allows water and runoff to flow. pass over the road without damaging it, so this particular culvert under this driveway was built about 30 feet below the surface of the road, so if you were standing on the road above the area where this culvert was, If she walked to the edge of the path on either side there would be a 30 foot drop to the opening of this culvert on either side, so Lawrence dragged Mary to this section of path over the culvert and then dumped her lifeless body. .
The sides slammed him into the rocks below and then Lawrence walked very carefully until he reached her body and put her inside the royal sewer and then, as he walked away from her, he told her now you're free after that Lawrence left. Mary should have been dead, she really should have died at various points throughout this attack, but miraculously Mary did not die and, in fact, she would later say that she vividly remembered the entire attack. She was completely lucid, completely aware, completely aware of the whole thing.saved for him. moment when the hammer knocked her unconscious, so she vividly remembered that her arms had been amputated and she specifically remembered one particular point at the beginning, before her left arm was amputated, the first arm, he grabbed her by the wrist left and she, in turn, instinctively grabbed it with her left hand on her left arm, so she held on to him and when he came down and cut her arm off, she started to fall back, but she remembered thinking to herself Why am I falling backwards?
I just grabbed his arm, grabbed it firmly and then as she's falling, it's like time has stopped, she literally saw her hand still holding onto his arm and saw that it had been cut from her body and then when Lawrence cut off her arm right despite feeling agonizing pain, it's as if he instinctively understood that he had to do it. She pretends to be dead, otherwise she will die, so she went completely limp, her eyes were half open and she watched as Lawrence moved her left hand, the one she thought she had grabbed when she fell backwards. , watched as he shook that hand. of his arm and then she was limp when he grabbed her and dragged her 100 feet to the sewer and she was limp and still and didn't make a sound when he threw her 30 feet down onto jagged rocks and she broke four of She had a pain unbearable in the ribs, but his will to survive told him not to make a sound, accept this punishment and you will survive and then after he left, remember thinking: you know, I don't know where he is, he could be waiting down the road For me, I can't just crawl out and try to save myself because then he could finish me off and then she was left in this sewer in this horrible position totally contorted with her arms missing and her ribs broken and finally after a while she started to feel exceptionally tired and that was due to blood loss and she said there was a voice in her head that told her: you can't go to sleep, if you go to sleep you're going to die and if you die, we can't catch you. this monster and he's going to do this to someone else and then she had a surge of adrenaline that made her decide I'm going to live, I'm going to get out of here, I don't know if he's still up there, but I have to get out and I have to try to save me and somehow she got out of the sewer and then, once she was on the ground, she dug the protuberances of her arms into the dirt and tried to cover the wound with dirt and mud and then later she raised her arms above the head because he didn't want his blood and muscles to fall out, so with his mutilated arms above his head he managed to crawl down this embankment to the road.
She doesn't have clothes. She is covered. bloody from head to toe, she is in shock and starts running down the road and a car was passing by quite fast, but they were so shocked by what they were seeing that they didn't stop and kept driving, so Mary finally ran three. she miles on this road before finally stopping a passing motorist who turned out to be a young couple and after getting over the initial shock of what Mary really looked like, they bundled her into her car and sped towards the hospital. Mary would stay in the hospital for a month and during that time she was giving the police all this information about her attacker about Lawrence Singleton and using her very detailed description of him, the police were able to create a very good composite sketch and the neighbor lawrence singleton saw that sketch and they handed him over lawrence was finally sentenced to 14 years in prison for what he did to mary it was the maximum sentence the judge could give him the judge wanted to do more but legally they couldn't and so mary testified in court and So, after it was all over and he was sentenced, Mary was leaving the courthouse and when she passed Lawrence, it was the only time she had to be physically close to him, he turned and leaned toward her and said, " I'll finish the job if it takes me the rest of my life, eight years later, Lawrence was paroled for good behavior and of course this terrified Mary, who had already become a wife and had two children, is worried that now This guy is free, come on. and finish the job, but Lawrence wouldn't go after Mary, instead, 10 years after being paroled, he would attack another woman, a 31-year-old mother of three named Roxanne Hayes, and unfortunately kill her at her murder trial. of roxanne, mary would testify against.
Lawrence and his testimony is what they used to secure a

death

sentence for Lawrence, but before he could be executed, Lawrence died of cancer in prison in 2001, when Mary found out that Lawrence had died, she felt very deceived, However, his children were greatly relieved to discover that their attacker had died and so found some comfort in the outrage over Lawrence's early release considering what he did to Mary and the fact that his early release led to another person died and led to the creation of the Lawrence Singleton bill giving judges the ability to give sentences of 25 years to life in prison in cases involving torture means that under this bill Lawrence would never have been released from prison after what he did to Mary, so that'll do it guys, if you got anything out of today's episode and you haven't.
