The Ultimate GOLF SUPERCAR PROJECT

Jun 01, 2021
Ten years ago we uploaded a video to YouTube called how to create the

ultimate

Golf GTI, we did an update, added a muffler, fake wheels and some Altezza lights and for that we are very sorry, so now, a decade later, we have decided to go back and do it . Again correctly, this is the

ultimate

golf

supercar

project

. It was back in 2009 when I bought my first high-performance Volkswagen in the form of the Mark 4 GTI and I had high hopes for that car, but I didn't know at the time that it was the least respected. High performance Volkswagens across the range, but still my friend Marty and I got to work trying to make the ultimate Golf.

We added some wheels, we added a tune, we added some Altezza style lights and some angel eye headlights. It was absolutely horrible, so how can we do it again and turn a Golf into something that truly rivals the performance of a

supercar

. Well, we are doing it with a completely new platform and that is the Golf R Mark 7. Now I bought this second hand, this is a 2015 model and it was one of the cheapest ones that was for sale on the internet, why, because it's a Wolfsburg model, now some of you might expect the Wolfsburg to be the Wolfsburg special with all the extra special stuff, but no, in this case. it meant the Haldex was completely whipped so it was front drive only, the tires were whipped, the battery didn't work, the start button didn't work and for some reason the previous owner had repealed the stereo so none of the speakers actually worked. who knows why it's an absolute mystery, but now we have this car to create our

golf

supercar

project

, so let's take a quick look at the Golf R Mark 7.

More Interesting Facts About,

the ultimate golf supercar project...

Like most Volkswagens, the Golf R is very modest and does not You'd be wrong to think it's actually fast, especially compared to its all-wheel drive rivals, the Focus RS WRX and even the Evo, but this is what makes it an incredible platform for an epic sleeper. It has a class-leading interior and, being a Wolfsburg model, plenty of stylish black accents and technological driving assistance, but under the hood is where it starts to get a little more exciting with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in line and 2-liter that sends power to all four when you need it through an updated Haldex 4motion system.

It's the DSG model, which means it's faster than the manual because the computers can change gears faster than you can. It's all very balanced, minimal, serious and understated, so it's time to fix that with some supercar performance specs now that we're talking about doing the latter. golf supercar project, what does that really mean by supercar? Our goal is to do 11 second quarter miles and zero to 100 in the three second range, which would make this one of the fastest street legal cars we've ever made at Mighty. Car modifications, so that's the plan, let's get to it. The first thing we will do is a reference power figure for the stock car.
the ultimate golf supercar project
We're doing three consecutive runs on the dyno to make sure everything is up to temperature and I ended up with an impressive 180 kilowatts to all four wheels. Once this is done, it is time to begin the transformation of this humble little golf course. We recently met a couple of guys at the meet and they said, "We can come and help you with your golf." So we said, "Come visit the shed" and they said they actually work at a place in Castle Hill called Hills, your house, which believe it or not, based on the name, they modify European cars and it's home built HEU acid, That's the way it is.
The German side of the style so they said if you want you can come here now the place is closed this weekend so I think we're sneaking in to see a couple of our sneaky spinners left here a couple of our sneaky spinners . So we're going to go there, they're going to give us a hand and Martin, we're going to do this very quickly in 24 hours, which is buying all this, it's actually like 16 hours of work. This car will be a supercar and will quickly pass the Super Cup. It's roundabout, absolutely yes, so that's the plan, we're going to meet the guys now and I don't know if they've told their boss or if they haven't told their boss, all I said is that the stores closed and that we can use it on the weekend, they don't really go into detail about your house, that's Martin the tuning and performance improvement, it's exactly what we want, so here we are, this is your Hills house where we've snuck in to say hello, oh, here.
He is, this is the horse man, hey Jackson, what is he like? So, this is Jackson. I met him at a meeting recently and he was the one who said he could help me with my golf, which I imagine it will look like, so anyway. So these are the guys we met at a meeting and they said, Hey, we can help you make your car go faster and that's what we're going to do today before the bosses find out your pants, that's the coolest thing I've ever seen. . Now that I've learned the all-important secret golf handshake, it's time to check out the modifications being implemented on the car, so everyone's been saying I should do a stage 1 or a stage 2 or a stage, whatever May you know how we feel. about those, we're not really doing any stages, we go beyond that to unlimited power, this is a Revo kit, actually, it's two kids, a performance pack and a power pack, now a performance pack, just so I can understand it. intercooler intercooler pipe intake tun tun and TC you tuned for the DSG, yeah, and then the power pack is that, but we're also adding a turbo, yeah, tell them, uh, flip, delete, okay, okay, and then We'll go even further than that, yes. so let's go, let's go to the stars and back, so not only will we do the turbo, the intake, the exhaust, all that kind of stuff too, then we'll also go to the engine mounts, the fuel pumps, the wheels, the brakes, braided lines, exhaust. it works like a hamburger and what kind of power should we expect to get from this appearance depending on the quality of the fuel and the diner between four hundred and seventy to five hundred or if we pull a two liter of a cheerleader.
The rule of thumb is usually around 500 horsepower if you get a nice big batch of 85 5 2530 it's fine and will still work like a sock if you need it. Wow and unlike the other projects we've seen, have you seen the other powerful camera projects, yeah, where they are. like putting crazy motors and things that don't matter fit together, this thing here is meant to be like Lego, that's right, it literally just screws together. Wow, how long will it take to do all this? Obviously, you'll have you and Paulie there and then Marty and I as his apprentices, I haven't done this before if it was Paul and I, probably like a Dana heart with you guys, maybe - okay, well, I guess we just bring the car and we get to work, the plan is to leave here tomorrow with a really fast car but will it really screw up?
Can I cut up Marty's Evo and we'll smoke a supercar? There is only one way to find out. 220 220. Have you ever had to make active transfer cases or D boxes? or not yet, it was amazing and that's when one of the store owners showed up, that's your boss, you know, you know, we decided to leave while Paulie explains what's going on and, luckily, it's okay because it's not an Evo with That's calmed down now we can get back to work once I put on my special Volkswagen gloves man they said you have to wear gloves because it's running on a European car have you noticed on the YouTube videos that the guys who work In European cars do they use this?
I thought it was to protect your hands, but it's actually to protect your car, the first step of course is to jack up the car, then I'll disconnect the steering column and remove the wheels, and it lasted about two minutes with the special euro gloves that I just used. I've been seen without my special gloves on and get arrested all the time, really, yeah, you know, I work in carbonyl, where these wheels won't go back on the car, so that's the first factory part to officially go away now that The cars are running. the air we can investigate underneath, so what are we seeing here underneath Jackson?
Is there anything his automotive archeology can tell us? You can see a couple of white spots right here, yeah, plus this clip doesn't go back on which It's kind of vague overall, but these Evans brands have water pump bolts, but yeah, it's obviously been done, which is good because it means we don't have to, so what's the next step now? Yeah, I'm just going to suffer, man. We'll just leave it and get to work. Our next step is to remove the front subframe and factory exhaust, which we will replace completely. We're doing it a lot, but of course there will always be a comment from the Evo owner when you least need it. expect him to need it or even want it, what an ugly engine he is, man, there's nothing pretty about those warts, it's all business or sausages, sausage Oliver Seoul and he doesn't sputter or vote, goodness that's all about you, you don't need to be pretty. to cut and understand, yeah, well, what you're looking at, you're probably going to cut, that was hard.
Next, it's time to say Alvie goes down to the factory airbox and intake, so this is the OEM airbox being replaced by the carbon Revo. stock intake and a professional panel filter to get more air to the turbo faster. It's a bigger box and it also has 16 percent bigger pipes if you're wondering so we're going to replace it and make sure our aftermarket turbo can suck in all the air it needs looks like the word has gotten out because the other Boss stopped by to see what's happening in your store, kill your house in cosmic, these are things that depress us, by the way, what are you doing, what are you doing to make your pain go faster? the cards change quite a bit we take care of you and we make them fast we will make them look good thank you so much for being with us coming and he's in space and I'll try to leave on Monday morning when you open again That's awesome man thank you so much for having us here, Tom, yeah, feel free to come over and we'll get a tofu roll with us and with all that taken care of, now we can remove the factory exhaust and wish you a good trip or whatever. the German equivalent is for that guy on skis, lazy cat, exhaust off, turbo shuts off next.
Yeah, so this golf actually has a plastic crankcase that a lot of modern cars seem to have these days and it also has a plastic crankcase frog which is basically this little plug here with an o-ring and instead of having a thread, you put this special vaginal insertion tool in the back, like this, give it a twist and now it comes and I replace them, like when you're after you serve as a car, I'm going to insert the vegetable removal tool into the vegetable plug, I give it a I turn and there it goes, it's efficient and I mean this car is obviously all about efficiency so let's drain it.
This obviously also drains the cooling because those are the two lines that go to the turbo and then the turbo can come out. Compare it to the new turbo. Turn that turbo back on. Redo fluid skids. These engines respond very well to performance tuning but if you really want to get the most out of it then you need to upgrade the turbocharger and once you are going faster with more power then other aspects of the car need to be considered such as the brakes, Factory brakes are great for stopping with factory power, but in our case, when we're ramping up, it's time to get ready for a big brake kit, so lines are off the table.
Oh, we've dropped the oil, we've dropped the coolant at this point, where's the turbo? four volts are going to come out, that's when it's going to come out and then we have our big turbo which is the same casing but it's a big turbo. I'll go over it with you shortly and then it'll go to the exhaust. is going to continue then the car can put the brakes back down and the suspension will be finished at some point and then we move to the front for the front support and intake because that will happen when the car is down while the cars on the hoist without the wheels , I'm taking the opportunity to install some performance lowering springs that will give a nice drop of about 10 to 15 mils on all sides while still retaining daily drivability while Marty has figured out something absolutely amazing, our favorite Ryobi .
The flexible light fits perfectly on the hood of a Golf, it's almost like they know we're removing the five year old, completely toasted battery that we'll be replacing later. We also need to remove the battery trays to have better access to the pipes. Below with the front suspension loosened we need to raise the car so we're going to move on to the rear springs. I must say there is nothing better than working with people who are at the top of their game. I learn a lot working on a car withthem and I'm really grateful to have the experience when they are not the rear springs so now half of our car is officially lowered but now it's an exciting time because the factory turbo is ready to Sal, thanks for your long and loyal service, but it won't be needed anymore, so this is the factory turbo, it just came off the car and we are replacing it with a Revo 38 PT R, which is a direct bolt-on replacement. which is surprising because it uses all the same pipes and exhaust material, except we're removing the muffler, but we'll get to that later.
This is a modified version of the is 38, which is the case it comes with. on the car, but this one has been modified and it has billet wheels, axles, goodies here that have been improved and that will give us 45 percent more flow and will be able to generate over 500 horsepower. 500 horsepower with a 2 liter golf. It's crazy, the Revo. The compressor and turbine housings have been CNC redesigned to match the larger wheels. They have a stronger shaft and a custom-made heat shield. The new turbo has a billet backing plate. A specifically designed larger bearing housing. Reinforced thrust bearing and bearing system, the larger compressor wheel is machined from solid aluminum with longer blades and tapered tips and the turbo also features an integrated recirculation system to prevent the compressor from going into surge and best of all, it bolts back to the factory. position with the exact same plumbing, so the next part of the turbo conversion is the factory muffler.
Can you explain to me what is basically going on there to reduce the spool noise and turbo noises in the car? Volkswagen installed a turbo muffler. Now let's just close it. above, Revo sells a delete that basically just putting it on the new turbo will create less turbulence in the airflow and give us more boost, so the only function of this is to simply silence and reduce turbo noise more or less like is. ridiculous yeah radical wonder first of all okay so we're basically switching from that still to this so this has some disconcerting yeah and this is just my free time that's all you felt a disturbance in the vegetable horse.
We need to change some stock items from our stock turbo to our new turbo and then we go back to the car to remove the steering rack and then we can finish installing the lowered springs in the front of the car, usually when we change the springs. We would need to use a spring compressor but in our case there is almost no tension on these so we do them on the floor but if you are unsure always go for the safest option, this is a matter of having only one job and Of these three bolts now there are only two left because one of them has fallen into the fish that is inside this car, which actually sounds to me like it is hitting the interior protector, this plastic protector, and I think that if I remove this plastic protector, I will find it unreal, there it is, they are the small victories, don't you understand?
With the front springs now installed, our car has been successfully lowered so we can lift it up and continue installing our big brake kit. When your car goes that fast, of course you want to explore the brake options, so we are making the Reverb Big Brake Kit. These are six piston calipers, you can get them in a couple different colors, you can get them in red or blue. I have black because, of course. trying to stay with the sleeper type of look but this kit comes with the brake fluid it comes with braided lines and then underneath all of this it is almighty and huge it has 380 melrose vented absolutely huge it will make sure that Let's cut any Evo's that come our way, this brake kit includes huge 380 Melrose which are a 2 piece floating disc and hat design with internal cooling vanes to help dissipate heat.
I also have six-piston progressive calipers and a one-piece aluminum monobloc design. We will be installing performance pads and stainless steel braided lines which is a huge improvement over the factory rubber lines but before we get into that it's time for the turbo, this is a monumental part of the build because it is this magical unicorn air pump that will really give the Gulf the chance it needs when it comes time to battle a legit supercar, yes we have high hopes for what is essentially a daily driven Golf, but unlike ago ten years with our latest golf project, this time we are doing it correctly and with that the turbos in So, while Paulie improves it, we move on to the brakes are on, but removing the backing of the brake pads is not as easy as seems.
We finally got there and now the calipers can be installed on the car now that the brakes are installed. We need to make sure the ECU doesn't throw a fault code, so Volkswagens actually have a brake pad sensor now. If you take a look here, if I pull this out, there's actually a sensor built into the brake pad and that's to allow you. knowing when the brake pads need to be changed now because a new spare parts kit doesn't include it, we'll probably throw up fault codes so what I'm going to do is cut that and then basically just create a loop here, loop again the cable over itself, cover it with heat shrink, seal it and then plug it in and then the computer will think the brakes are awesome because they are right now we are just swapping out the factory brake lines for some braided units that go with our new and crazy epically big brake kit.
Thanks brother, we've had an absolutely fantastic day. We removed the factory wheels, brakes, exhaust battery and air box and installed our lowered springs. Large brake kit braided lines. and most importantly a new upgraded turbo and we've also been listening to Marty talk about his Evo all day which is an achievement in itself. Next we need to do the exhaust intake front mount fuel pumps, pipes, new wheels, tires and of course our Retune and that will all be on the next episode of Mighty Car Mods as it continues the definitive golf supercar project.
