The truth about powder coating hot! - Ep 96

Jun 01, 2021
What's up everyone, welcome back to the channel? I have something different, a different style video today. I'm going to do a sort of instructable on how to hot shoot and my thoughts on hot spraying, whatever you guys do. I want to call it, I know there are a lot of people who think that I'm completely against you know this technique or this format, whatever you want to call it, I'm not, I just think that unless you know your weapon incredibly well This is not just for anyone start doing it. I know there are people out there who have learned how to hot flock or flock shoot from scratch.
the truth about powder coating hot ep 96
I think there's a guy on the UK Army Facebook page who said he's always in hot flocks and he actually shoots cold now and I think he actually likes it more so obviously he's a bit hit and miss. This seemed like a good opportunity to do it because I was starting with, you know, an Audi wheel with damaged curb, uh, they had. It's already been refinished by someone else and not very well, as you'll see here in a minute, but I'm going to repaint this in gloss black for the client. You know, he brought it with a tire, so of course we took the tire off. here in the shop and then we get to it, as you can see here, it's a pretty horrendous rash, but the rash isn't terrible all things considered, but it knocked down all the black

powder

that someone sprinkled on the original finish and there's the curb. rash here um you know it's not that bad let's go ahead with a day like normal and get all this out you can see it trying to get good light I know it's really hard to show it with the flash on but I hope you can Guys You can see it and like any other sidewalk job I do, this is just one 80 grit disc in a day and it's a dual action sander for those of you who have been asking, this works for 99 of sidewalk repair.

More Interesting Facts About,

the truth about powder coating hot ep 96...

Honestly, unless it needs to be soldered of course, all you're doing is knowing you're sanding the high spots to the low spots, you basically want to make sure you don't round any of the edges or any of the edges of the spokes or anything like that, but it's a pretty simple process, honestly, okay, so we move on to the uh scat blast scat cat 40, it's the blasting cabinet that I use. I have a video on all my gear, so I'll put a link to that. down in the description for you guys too, I know I get questions about the gear all the time, but there's actually a whole video specifically for the gear.
the truth about powder coating hot ep 96
I explode everything with 30 60 green diamond. I don't run a siphon feed setup. I run a pressure cooker setup. even though this cabinet was originally set up for siphon feed obviously with a pot set up you get a lot more airflow you know a lot higher velocity for whatever sand or media you're using like I said I used 30 60 green diamond in Almost all my projects with the exception of a few things. There is a link in the description of this video. It's always for Green Diamond. But anyone who has tried this medium has loved it, so I continue to encourage more and more people to use it. with my current setup, you know, making a wheel like this takes me about eight minutes, you know, six to eight minutes on most wheels, this one because it's mesh and it has a lot of spokes, it takes me a little bit longer, so don't put it. at the eight minute mark, but it comes out clean, ready to go and we move on to the next step, so with these now they've been chemically stripped, we fixed their sidewalk rash, they're out of gas, now they're out. sandblasted, we're going to go ahead and tape off the rear mounting pad and the type of hub hole area, as well as many of you ask me about the tape I use, where I get it, what brand is it , actually I couldn't even say it.
the truth about powder coating hot ep 96
What is the brand of most of this tape? I got some high temp amber tape which is what I look for on Amazon and I just find the one I'm looking for size wise and order it that way. I've never had any problems with any of them. This particular roll is a four inch roll and I know it's a little bit heavier tape. It's actually closer than I think to most green tape which is why I use this tape because it seems to stick significantly better than the green one. the tape stays in place, I know it's good for a little higher temperature, it's usually a little flimsier so it's harder to cut, you actually have to pull it by hand and then you know You should cut because you have tension, which you don't.
Not a big deal for me, I know some people don't like that because the green tape is a little stiffer. You can usually move the blade around an area and cut it like I said, that part to me doesn't really matter. I prefer to have tape that I know stays in place and doesn't wrinkle or do anything too wild. You know, you put this on and you just take a squeegee and you pull it all down and you can see very clearly when you pick it up. all the marks going down and sticking in place and I have never had a problem with this tape pulling on anything whether it be a sandblasted surface or a machine surface or even a

powder

coated surface so this medium is definitely the way or this tape is definitely the way to go as you know once again just search for amber high temperature tape and you will find it all over Amazon.
You know, if you find a brand you love, let me know and I'll try it. but apparently every brand I've tried has been perfect, so we're going to go ahead and finish trimming the excess off of this mounting platform as you can see here and we'll move on to the next step, and the next step is We actually just put it in the oven and we wait, so we'll take it out of the oven. Here we're going to put an infrared thermometer on this thing to show you how hot it really is. It's not this initial reading, which I think is 204.
Yes, the next reading is 264, which is a little bit closer to where we want to be, so while I don't necessarily suggest shooting hot, I know it has its place. There are people in the industry who only shoot hot. I know there are people who think this is the best way to do it. I do it with certain colors. Glossy black is not traditionally one of them. I'm just doing this. They are spraying this wheel with heat to make this video for you. Guys, and since it was just a repair part, it seemed like a good option.
You know, there was another YouTube channel that had posted a video about hot water spraying and clearly didn't quite understand what hot water spraying actually is. was and you know the finished product didn't look that great either as a result so hot spraying is literally hot spraying I mean you're spraying it and the powder instantly takes away one of the big advantages that you have about it. By doing that you can ensure you get good coverage and hard to reach areas without problems, you also get a decent film thickness. You know, we'll go through it and check the film thickness later and make sure that This is ready, but even when I hot spray, you know I'm good enough with this gun now that I can check it and know that I'm getting the amount correct powder.
I'll be at the top end of the safe. scale for the thickness of the mill every time, but if you know it's within that scale, you know the only thing I'd really like to emphasize is that you have to know your gun incredibly well to do this, you have to know the powder production that you're putting in, You know, the gun settings aren't going to matter too much in this setup and I'm not going to give it to you because there are too many variables involved, but when spraying gloss black like this, you know, my kv is pretty low. and my air pressure is quite low.
I don't have a cone on the end of this tip just because I want the powder to go exactly where I want it to go, that seems to work best for me but that of course is different for everyone. I would suggest that if you want to go this route, really learn your gun and cold fire it before you start hot spraying, of course it can speed up production times and things of that nature if you're in a real hurry, but Honestly, it can also lead to some pretty terrible failures, so you know the downside to this is when you're spraying hot.
If you make a mistake you are starting completely over, there is no way to work backwards from this, you can't just throw it away. you know things of that nature, like you can do with cold spraying, by the time you see a problem, you see a problem with this, it's too late, unless it's just a matter of adding more powder and then I guess you can get away with it. yours, but you end up taking this wheel, you know, when you see the still-smoking powder take away instantly, you get that glossy finish right away, this is sherwin-williams, uh, plain black, um, and then the next step is to let it Cool completely and then place it back in the oven. by its regular gear cycle and this is the end result, you know, as you can see, the coverage is excellent, the gloss level is excellent, everything worked well with this wheel.
You know, I can't emphasize enough how much I encourage people to learn how to use the gun. adjustments before trying this, but it works, you know, if you know what you're doing, this can work, you know, one of the real tricks to hot spraying is if you're going to spray it like this, I do a single coat like this specific and generally everything works well. I have friends in the industry who suggest spraying a hot coat, letting it cool and then applying a light coat spraying everything and then doing your full cure cycle. I did it both ways except both ways successfully, but this is my preferred method if I'm spraying something hot.
You've seen me do this in a couple other videos. You know, spraying some of the chameleon colors where I really want to stack the chameleon flake so that it has a lot of color definition, there are a couple of candy that I'll do that with or sheer powders. I tend to avoid doing it as much as possible on those, there are only a couple of certain colors that I really like to do. way and I prefer it that way, you know, as you saw, this wheel came with a rim, so we had to take it off, so we'll put it back on now and that'll pretty much be the end of this. project, one thing I do know, since I have them here, make sure you check out the ukc army page on Facebook, you can type in ukc army, I'll put it here on the screen, you know, I think that's the group.
There are even about 500 members, I don't remember exactly how many, but it's about 500, so definitely go check out there are a lot of really helpful people there. It's been a great community, you know, I'm lucky to be a part of it. Although I guess I was the one who did it. I'm still happy that you guys have become the community that you have. I hinted that you might know what it is, but I think it will be great for everyone.
