I think it must have been extremely bittersweet for him, like a dream come true, but I'm putting myself in the shoes of someone who can never be filled. It must have been very difficult and for him and for us it was difficult, it just was and you. Yeah, as tough as we were, he was trying to get the fandom out of him and also trying to get him to play something different like Cliffwood. You know, he would play with a pick and follow whatever I did and I remember there. There were times when he knew he would be playing. I would just turn around so he couldn't see what he was playing and he couldn't follow me. It's like do whatever you want, you know, but obviously live, he was. He was definitely a perfect fit, he was a great force and you heard the bass live, so, uh, uh, and he wasn't afraid to get up to the microphone and bark when he wanted to and he was sweating.

His creativity came out enough in Metallica, he needed to get it out somewhere else.
