The Real Problem With Shane Dawson

May 30, 2021
This video is sponsored by a heartfelt submission, serious submissions, let them know where your heart is before you post your favorites. Well, this is probably the most conflicting moment I've ever felt while making a video. I want to talk about the Shane situation, but it's scary, uh, for a couple of reasons: one, he has a very large audience and a fanbase that's pretty ready to defend him at every turn, so opening up about that doesn't sound right. funny, and two, I don't think Shane is. a monster that I don't

real

ly know from either his friends or our mutual friends, he's a well-intentioned guy who has learned and wants to continue learning and growing from his past mistakes, but that's exactly why I'm doing this video I'm doing it because of the loopholes I've observed in Shane's past.

I apologize for your audience's misunderstanding of the criticisms levied against Shane and the gaps I have observed in the youtube discourse about Shane. This is not a Shane's video about platforms or cancel culture is not going away nor do I want it to, quite the opposite. In fact, he has a very large audience and I truly believe that he has the power to use his past mistakes to educate that audience. For the YouTube community to grow toward a better future, I think it's important to understand the foundation that Shane and, to a greater extent, YouTube was built on.

I'm just going to say that some of that foundation is not that good, it's just By addressing it head on, we can remedy this

problem

systemically because if we don't fix these underlying

problem

s, we're just going to be playing whack-a-mole every time something comes up on the platform that we don't like. So, with all that being said, let's grab Shane and YouTube. Welcome back to the Internet, it was a mistake. I am your host, power without control. Today I want to talk about the situation with Shane Dawson, uh, which has been hotly discussed for a minute, but after watching. d'angelo wallace's exhaustive examination of

shane

's past content i couldn't help but have thoughts as a black creator who essentially grew up on the platform i had a front row seat to the rise of

tv and i just have to say it was very heartwarming Seeing someone reach such heights that they look like me.

Representation matters too. Surprise, I'm black. There is always someone who had no idea. Leave your disturbing opinions on race in the comments below. All jokes aside. Shane's content simply wasn't mine. In 2007, when I was 14 years old, I would rather hear Hank Green say about the release of the long-awaited seventh Harry Potter book by renowned female anatomy expert J.K. Rowling. Shane's videos appeared on the cover for years and years. I didn't click on them because I didn't need to know any ghetto girl makeup tips. Shout out to all my ghetto girls until I became obsessed with the Tanacon dumpster fire and watched, watched every video I could.

Figure that out, including the Shane series, and at the time I was a little confused as to how you got from point a to point b. Today, Shane is among the most criticized people on the platform. Some of this criticism comes from the most recent videos of him that have contributed. to the rehabilitation of images of white creators who, in their own way, have said the n-word, but most of the criticism comes from shane's content from an era long spawned of youtube, the old landmark year of um, I don't know like 2010. Well, before we get too deep into this, I want to give you a little warning because Shane's previous content contains blackface, other racist jokes that sexualize minors, abuse jokes, and pretty much everything else you might be upset about.
I will censor what makes sense. because you can find it uncensored in d'angelo's video, thanks d'angelo, but don't say I didn't warn you, my goal is not to retraumatize anyone, especially since the worst receipts are already pretty well documented. I'm also censoring things because I want to try to monetize this video and donate all the money it makes to Rain, which is an organization that helps victims of abuse, which reminds me that I forgot to tell you about the money we raised at Papa John's. The Black Lives Matter video causes us to raise about two thousand dollars so it's exciting and I'll leave in the description where that money went and some links in case you want to donate and also I just wanted to say thank you for all the support. um, I'm a lucky guy, hey, what's up guys?
Shane's first apology, that I know of, occurred in 2014 when he was 26, and from what I understand, this was four to six years after he first received criticism for his use of Blackface. I couldn't imagine any other apologies existing. before this moment because like three days before I recorded this I was still responding to people on Twitter, why aren't we talking about Shane Dawson wearing Blackface which isn't the Blackface he was playing with? wendy williams and doing it justice, there is a big difference, very quickly, there is no difference. Also, who made you an expert on his first apology, talk about how he learned what blackface was a month ago.
I'll be honest, I

real

ly didn't. I knew what it was until literally a month ago I knew the term I didn't know anything about the historical background You know it's amazing that he says he just learned what it is because he's been criticized for it for years He also claims that no one in his audience was disagree with that, which didn't offend my audience, I never received any comments on it, it was fine, which is a weak defense for several reasons, one of them their audience is very young and that is an undeniable fact. Shane himself knows that and they said then, what do you do? and I said, oh, I do comedy for children two. youtube is an echo chamber built to show you things you agree with and this is your audience of course the people who came to your channel for blackface are not going to have a problem with blackface what do you mean you don't eat meat?
Everyone who comes to my store loves a good salam. Three people in the comments definitely had a problem with it because Shane was widely criticized at the time for his behavior and he says in this apology video that he ignored all the criticism against him, so I'm picking a narrative man for a long time during the last seven years. Every once in a while, once a year, I get kind of bombarded on Twitter with you know, change race, change race and they'll post screenshots and blog posts and all that stuff and I ignore it based on the fact that three days before this he was still defending his use of blackface, I can only imagine. that he was apologizing to save face with his own audience and also appears to coincide with a Times review of the film he was promoting at the time.
What was also really difficult is that you know the movie just arrived. came out and a review came out that wasn't even about the movie, it was about me because the movie isn't offensive, the script isn't that obscene. Someone out there is a rat and they go around saying this is the most obscene movie. ever done and it's pissing me off, he says look, I'm going to be honest with you. I've had clients go online, see Shane's stuff, and say I don't want to be a part of that when he was an actor. He was auditioning for everything.
I don't quite understand the logic of being demanding when you don't have a job. Come on, you can go somewhere amazing. You know, like Kentucky. You know you can be with your dog. Don't talk about it. talk about it, don't talk about it, he also promotes in this apology for some reason, like reading the room, the movie is fun, it's not, you know, but now a lot of people are not going to give it a chance because they think it's going to finish. be horrible and offensive and really not great received a lot of really negative reviews Shane's movie was gutted in the critical landscape i.e. absolutely destroyed one review said if you enjoy my movie you must be a sociopath who was in LA times for me Reviews don't really mean if a movie is good, this video isn't about the movie by the way, right?
I'm not trying to promote her, dear God, now it seems like I am, oh God, varus, the brand deal please. um, but that reminds me that you can follow me on Instagram and Twitter at Jarvis, you'll always be connected. Look, Shane taught me something. It is a mutual exchange. He, strangely, also doesn't know how to not monetize his video, which I find very funny. I am not making this video for money nor am I going to put ads on this video. There was like a three-second ad for my movie, but that's because it's in all my videos and I can't do anything about it.
He continued later. I apologize for confirming this, but the fact that I'm making this video primarily to protect his own bag will serve as a theme. The video is also super defensive because of my videos. Now every choice I make, people go straight to racism, it's very strange. that everyone calls me a racist when I do something racist, what is that about, of course, I hired him? blackface, but he just chose this particular thing because there's no racism in the movie, there's a black homeless man eating his. I didn't choose it. I didn't ask for a black bum.
I auditioned for every career, every kind of hobo look. I am an equal opportunity employer. It's been mentioned many times that it's a problem for people, so if we just like losing, I'm just saying I'm not taking anything out of the movie to please a bunch of out-of-work actors. In Pittsburgh you should be lucky to get an audition for a feature film. I'm angry because we found out about this two days before we started filming. I don't know, I'm going to go, Shane, stop it, you can't go. We have a lot to do, I'm going to go and do this at my hotel.
I also know it's 2015, but let's not use homeless to talk about homelessness because of the way the whole video is poorly planned as his. apologies are often okay um I don't really know how to make this video um I didn't really plan it I didn't like writing it and most of the time I spend with him making excuses for the circumstances of the video like he wasn't the one who filmed it and edited this sorry my brain is melted. I've been, literally, I was on a plane when I was reading all these blog posts and stuff and I turned it on.
I started to panic. I like to vomit a little in my mouth. I just wanted to make a video at the time, but I was in the middle of a plane and then the man next to me was coughing and threw up a little. a little bit and it was strange why are you in such a hurry? My camera will turn on at 4 pm sharp and I have to be there. Square Shane's defense of wearing blackface is that he is playing a character I knew in my head. It was like that's not what I'm doing because what I'm doing is playing Wendy Williams, and a lot of the screenshots going around are of me playing Wendy Williams and me playing Raven Simone and Chris Brown and stuff.
In my head I was like oh no, I'm just becoming the character. I'm not making fun of them for being black, I just look like that, which is a funny justification for me because it's obvious, like we know we know. you're playing a tone of character you're not actually black, although you may be confused about that thank you detail, detail, what's up, what's up, detail, it also avoids the fact that all the real black people in your videos are just jokes either they look silly or they are just there to get the audience to agree with their use of the n-word.
The most insidious part of Shane's comedy is that he constantly puts down people of color. They are always the butt of the joke. Shauna. I really want her to have it. a channel and she has a lot of fans and she doesn't know what she's doing, she doesn't know how to make a video, she's black, she doesn't even know how, she just hits the keyboard if you're building a brand. With this kind of humor that I would say is Shane, then you won't be surprised if it later turns out that the whole platform you've built is built on rotten foundations, by the way, for all the people who say it was a different time than I'll talk more later, people were protesting and demonstrating against Eminem in the late 90s and early 2000s for all the outlandish things he said and the only line Eminem wouldn't cross is saying the n-word, so just food.
To think in defense of his comedic sensibilities, he says that he grew up with Sarah Silverman and you know, listen, there are a lot of videos that I've made that are offensive. I've made a lot of jokes about things that people don't joke well about. I mean, you know I grew up, I was raised with Sarah Silverman, someone who did a blackface sketch that was critical of blackface, which, by the way, Shane has never done and still saw a lot of backlash for it, so I don't know. If that's the best example, I can't believe he has to make this video, I can't believe this is happening.
Shane's second apology that I know of comes four years later, when Shane is 30 and it's the first time he's addressed his history with the sexualization of children, but instead of talking about the root of the problem and the root of the criticism , avoid discrediting this specific manipulated clip thatpeople were using to call him a pedophile, first of all, I don't understand why anyone would turn me on that, but that's the first good thing you said, but they were sexy, I'm kidding. Well, back to Instagram, I wanted to play that full clip, I mean that moment, especially in its entirety just for context, because it seems to be missing nowadays, so there's a clip of Shane on an old podcast sexualizing a child for humor, that's an undeniable fact. shane in his apology focuses on the fact that this clip was manipulated to make him look bad and taken out of context even though in context it still makes him look bad like d'angelo played the entire clip in full context um in his video and shane doesn't, uh, which is kind of funny, here's my justification for pedophilia.
I can't, okay, first let me tell you that having sex with children or touching children or anything like that is terrible, it shouldn't, but this is my thing, people. you have foot fetishes, people have fetishes about you, you know everything and there are websites on the internet where they can watch that weird creepy thing and masturbate to it, okay everyone do their thing, so why when someone looks at a google like a naked baby on google? and they masturbate to it, they can be arrested, I don't understand why, but the energy with which Shane comes at us is that we all came together to call Shane a pedophile with minimal evidence, which is simply not what happened.
I'm going to start by saying I'm not a pedophile hey man uh don't yell at me I didn't do anything why are you mad at me what is Chain doing here and it's something he does a lot. He is committing a logical fallacy. Known as a straw man, which is where you twist someone's argument against you to make it easier to defeat them, for example, there is a lot of good faith criticism of Shane for sexualizing minors and his behavior towards underage fans, okay so on the daily stand i asked you guys to show me your best side that was the day i took a lot of vicodin it sounded like a fun game at the time let's see some of the funny pictures oh oh she did this before i guess for this one photo she likes being raped but in this video she focuses on I don't know anyone who is saying that because her boyfriend has a baby face and her ex girlfriend has a baby face, that he is a pedophile like no one is really arguing that argument good faith because one of their tests was taking a photo of me and ryland, my boyfriend, and then a photo of me and lisa, my ex, circling their faces and saying that they look like babies, they have baby faces, shane is a pedophile, that That's what you want to use this apology for.
What Shane should be doing is apologizing for sexualizing children, but that is much less defensible behavior, so he resorts to something that is a little easier for his audience to accept. This is also something that has been a pattern for Shane for a long time. time and to this day he still hasn't addressed it so if you're wondering why people keep bringing it up it's because you keep not addressing it that's why shane yaw my real name goes on record saying I'm not a pedophile Hey, you don't have to go on the record, we have you on the record, you kissed the 12 year old girl on the lips on the record, you traded gum with another teenage fan on the record, um, I want you to chew that gum and then . give it to me and you make inappropriate jokes to teenagers in your recorded live streams oh my god can you see my friends?
I was like itching and I'm not wearing pants so I have to realize I was on camera so I just made a joke about exposing himself to his audience with full knowledge that his audience is pretty young. That's an error in judgment at best for me, but it's a pattern that happens over and over again and perhaps this humor could be acceptable if it were. eric andre or something like that in adult swim where the audience is not expected to be kids but they are also not doing live streams with their fans on a live stream with a couple hundred fans, there is a power dynamic that is being exploited and it seems like I know it's a pattern.
This is a bad idea. Every time I do these little chats, I always say something or show something. This is weird because after that, if you look at the chat, you can see a girl saying that she is totally okay with you doing inappropriate things, ha ha. which kind of speaks to the normalization of this behavior with their audience, maybe this person is an outlier, maybe you didn't see the message, huh, but I'm worried that this environment is being created for young girls, it's not like if you were just learning now that this is inappropriate you knew it at the time i just got home from the cake in the hospital alley why did someone go so hard on you last night oh my god i'm looking at your profile picture and you're like 12 years old that was Did someone get really hard on me last night?
Someone in 6th grade took you to 12th grade. So why do you treat us like we're crazy when we have valid criticisms against you? That's manipulation and it's also absurd to me. takes such a confrontational tone in the face of such serious accusations, um or, for example, they say oh, shane talked about googling naked babies, which, by the way, I never liked that he was making a joke, telling a story, lying and saying well, I googled naked. Of course, I didn't Google naked babies. I'm busy, I don't have time to Google naked babies and that's gross and weird, so when everyone, including you, talks about how much you've changed, it's a hard pill to swallow.
These things that aren't addressed I also think that continuing to call them bad jokes really diminishes the impact of what's going on. There is a pattern of behavior that could be harmful to your fans and even people who aren't fans because it creates a standard. of behavior that is normalized because of Shane's position of power, do you have fans that you want to like, but young people like a lot of these young girls like 12 years old in my mouth like all this and I just don't see him acknowledging that? Although we'll get to the latest apology, it seems like this is damage control once again because it's mostly about how the situation affects him rather than the victims of his actions and I'm not going to turn this into a metaphor. . moment or like I'm feeling bad, I'm not going to turn this into that because that's not what I'm trying to do with this, it triggers me to listen to that clip, so listen to me joke about it, I've been in such a bad place before that there's apparently this term called performative regret, which is where you have self-deprecating apologies to emotionally manipulate the audience into being on your side and feeling bad for you, that's everywhere in these apologies honestly.
What happened today was that I read it. In fact I read a blog about myself and everything I've done and I read the tweets. I usually just ignore them or write something bold and read them and it really got me excited and it really broke my heart. He's also always talking about how he apologized before but where and when, if you've been here a while you know I've done this before. I have apologized many times for videos because I could only find three apologies and if your apologies are hard to find where you address certain topics then I don't think that's up to us also in 2014 you said you were ignoring everything up to this point in 2018 you acknowledged apologies previous ones, but the only previous apology that exists is for Blackface and you have never addressed the issue of sexualization of minors until 2018, so you think I'm sorry, Apol absolves you of all blame?
Hi, if you've been watching me for a while then you know I've done a lot. of things in my past, this brings us to the third and final apology as of August 6 at 12:12 p.m. p.m., as Deangelo points out in his video, this thread came up in response to a big Twitter thread about Shane in his past, but around the same day as another big thread with a bunch of other stuff, so it doesn't really get there to acknowledge a lot of the stuff, but he also blows up tati like four days after this, so it really undoes the whole shane thing.
The most recent apology certainly accomplishes more than the previous ones, but it relies on some familiar tropes like making us feel bad for him. My childhood. My past. I have had a lot of pain. Many bad things have happened to me. and um, it makes us feel bad for him, that's the level I've been feeling really bad about myself and last but not least, it makes us feel bad for him, I hate that person so much, shane, Dude, no one asks. to make you hate yourself I'm willing to lose everything no one is asking you to lose everything or at least I'm not, maybe some people are, but I think that would be the easiest way out, people you know I have. having been guilty of this, people tend to get defensive when accused of hurting another person and then try to prove to everyone that you are a good person, but that's not the point, it's not about you Friend, take responsibility, it doesn't mean Feeling bad about what you've done is about making it right, for example, I think it would be wonderful if you used your platform to educate like you mentioned you want to do, but by talking about how bad you feel, You really keep the focus on yourself instead of shining a light on people who have been hurt by your past actions and behaviors.
We will address this apology in parts. It starts with racism. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be black and see this white guy paint himself black and the whole internet at the time was like lol hey it's me, I was there and he's black too, this is cool to acknowledge, I just wish every admission of guilt was not expressed as a call for sympathy, I do not. I don't even know how to fully apologize because it almost seems like an irredeemable thing, you know, maybe just try to apologize please, life is long and I think a genuine apology that really addresses the core of where this criticism is coming from can be an un long way and then we get back to shane feeling bad for shane, he should lose everything over that, thankfully shane now seems to be acknowledging that he has normalized racism for an audience that wouldn't challenge him, that made the young people at the time watching me think which was okay, cool now to do that because of the sexualization of minors, him as a white person who wears a wig and plays a character and makes stereotypes and then says the n-word is something I probably should have lost my career for, yeah . probably youtube, where were you?
It basically happened to Sam Pepper after a petition that a group of big creators co-signed hit YouTube to remove a video he made depicting sexual assault, so we know it was possible at the time, but even though hate speech has been against youtube community guidelines since day one, it has never been enforced with shane

dawson

. I don't use any racial slurs in my life. I have never used a racial slur in anger. Just to point out that you shouldn't. I don't have to qualify this, I never used a racial slur on a Wednesday in February 2018. I mean, I've seen a lot of videos about the history of Blackface and how he was created to make fun of black people. they feel less and the fact that I was somehow a part of that, I kind of have to give Shane some credit for addressing the situation that happened a few years ago with a wonderful creator named Francesca Ramsey. now there was a person who actually tried to contact me for a long time and her name is Chescaleigh and she tweeted at me and we fought back and forth and my audience at the time was saying racist things to her and it was so toxic and I'm so sorry but once again i feel like the situation was misrepresented listening to shane talk about their disagreements you don't really get the gist of it but when you read the tweets it's like oh it's pretty disturbing honestly what's your deal i just don't get it , you've been attacking me for like three years, okay, strong words, attacking is not the same as criticizing, I think future Shane will eventually learn that one of my biggest problems was thinking that critics are being attacked and that's not the case either. she tagged him so he basically confidently responds to a subtweet.
You'll also notice that this was a day after her first apology, but you know she grew a lot in those 24 hours. I understand that you do not agree with my content and I understand it 100, but the constant tweets are so negative and hateful the constant tweets about my racism are so negative and hateful why can't you just suffer in silence like a victim? Blame me if you ask me and I've never favorited someone's tweet. telling you to kill yourself, I'm not sure if it was an accusation that was made or just a random statement he's making, I'm not even joking but it seems out of nowhere and I called you. a youtube because you seek attention not because you are a God I called you because you are attention not because you are a stop misrepresenting me I am sorry for offending you and I have apologized to the community numerous times this is before their first apology so I wonder where they are these apologies you must let go of the hate girl God I feel enlightened by this tweet so you know it goes through 24 hours of rapid growth and completely changes the person and makes itsapology video, um, after which he tweets at francesca, who asked him not to mention her name.
I saw your tweet about leaving out your name after I uploaded it. Sorry, I wasn't trying to start. Oh wow, my bad, I just completely ignore the unnoticed. Harassment that may occur if I mention your name in a negative way in one of my videos. Oh my goodness, I sure wish I could take it off and put it back up, but unfortunately my butt line is more important than your well-being, so my hands are tied. Francesca has spoken to Shane on several occasions, but I just want to share the story, I think, of the period in 2014 when she made this first apology.
Shane and I spoke on Skype. for about three hours and most of it was spent with shane crying and telling me how bad she felt and how he didn't want me to hate him. I felt cornered. I assured him that I didn't hate him or anyone. I just wanted him to understand that what he had done was harmful, it's clear that what he's really worried about is how he's perceived and not the harm he's doing and he doesn't seem to be able to understand that, but hopefully he does bring it up. You know this in his most recent apology, so I hope he's starting to get there, but Francesca mentions that she reached out to him in the past and tried to discourage him from, you know, propping up particularly problematic figures, which she wouldn't do. received a response.
So do you have any idea what kind of harassment creators can receive when they criticize someone with such a defensive fanbase? Francesca published one of the emails she received from a Shane fan on her day and I'm going to read it to speak out against racism, you speak out, you hit people on your Twitter, you humiliate them, you insult them. Shane Dawson is the poster child for racism. The guy has a lot of black friends and fans of different ethnicities. Has he ever mistreated someone because of the color of their skin or their nationality or religion? not once am I not here to criticize you uh mission failed since I know you mean well but let me say this and now, because of the psd resistance, you and I know that white people in the entertainment business are the most oppressed group in society , one small slip and they will be accused of racism, homophobia, sexism, etc., aren't you taking this too far?
Did you meet Shane Dawson in real life? To be fair, he's right, one small slip, a hundred blackface videos and you. I'm accusing this kind of racism, I mean, come on, don't you think that's going too far? I know this email is old, but it's still indicative of the way fans today defend Shane Dawson and I think he shares some responsibility. As for how his audience acts on his behalf, it is up to him to educate his audience that the criticism against him is not an attack against him and he mentioned this in his most recent video, but clearly the message does not filter through because These fans feel like they are losing their favorite creator due to some kind of unfair situation and that is not what is happening here.
He wields a lot of power like I do with my platform and with great power comes great responsibility. Hasn't Uncle Ben taught us anything? Oh, I meant Spider. -man, but that works in a strange way, Uncle Ben hasn't taught us anything. Here's another Shane apologist from 2020 for those who don't believe me. This is still going on. He literally asks a boy to twerk for him and other things. I love you too. Can? twerk for us, he had a forum where some of his underage audience sent him inappropriate photos that he literally asked for. Don't throw stones unless you're carrying absolutely none, period, period, damn if we've all made mistakes in our lives, then.
We can't criticize anyone, no, that doesn't seem right to me, he made mistakes, he apologized and I don't think that's who he is today. He wasn't perfect 10 years ago, I bet you weren't either. He's fine, yes, no. all mistakes are equal but go away queen he apologized too maybe you accepted his apology but uh jada pinkett smith didn't and I'm with jada on this one from 2017 which again recently she was still doing videos that evaded criticism. of him like there's a video of him reacting to hate videos with jeffree star uh a literal angel who has done nothing wrong.
They include this video someone made in 2010 called "Why I Hate Shane Dawson," which I watched and it's full of valid criticisms of who we are. I still do Shane Dawson to this day. The frustration comes from the younger places like the Nickelodeons and stuff that they know about me, they like me and they want to do something with me, but they also know that I can't change what I do. I can't tone it down, I don't want to be stupid, but if you want to get between these hits, you better keep it between the lips of your wallet, man, so that was 10 years ago, I just said this is out there and he literally It jumps. all the problematic chain examples done in that video and they're just making jokes about the way the guy looks.
Hello everyone, oh, pretty much since I started this channel, everyone has asked me the same question: Are you going to kill someone? That's the next one. great opportunity to use his platform to address the bad things he did in the past and how he changed from that directly and he didn't do any of it, he didn't show any of the receipts and all he did was talk about what the guy looks like in the video. He's scary and he's scary, but that's not the point. Francesca's story tells us that people have made the effort to educate Shane in good faith.
People much more eloquent than me, but that education has fallen on deaf ears. So why exactly are we supposed to believe he is? changed, where was he? Okay, third apology that completely unraveled on the livestream four days later because your message goes on to talk about his sexualization of minors, where he basically repeats this apology from 2018 where he talks about how the clip was altered. They cut out all the parts where I said you know pedophilia is disgusting and they put it together and it made me sound like I was talking about it being normal and remembering that it's still bad in such a disgusting context that I would never say that but also I shouldn't have been. joking about it anyway and he starts to recognize it, uh, until he once again talks about himself.
My childhood. My past. I have had a lot of pain. Many bad things have happened to me. so it seems like he is moving away from the situation where he made sexually inappropriate comments to his cousin, yes we want to talk to you, we want to explain to you what sex is, we stayed very quiet, oh where's the other peep ? We should probably do it. just use please, tweet, okay, one tweet and then we'll use you, oh, okay, so I'll pretend that's it, you know, I mean, that works, Lucy, this happens. Look, and then, you're so happy when you're an adult.
I can't believe he's endorsing how old you are. I'm 12. This feels very, you know what you are, no you're not on your period, you think it was a family moment he shouldn't have shared. online because I posted it on the internet for everyone, not just my family, that I didn't post it as a weird and stupid family moment for everyone, ah, which doesn't feel right, calling it a weird and stupid family moment doesn't really help no one except for your own image and ignore the fact that this is a pattern like you just forget that this is something you did more than once, talk about it like only this clip came up but there are so many clips you know what ? what you should do to dry off, go dance on that table over there, yeah, okay, I mean, we don't want any more hip action, yeah, we don't want to have sex with you, but this just makes it feel like you.
You're addressing it because you got caught because you're not actually addressing the whole problem, not to mention the rampant inappropriate comments about kids you're not related to. Now it's time to see someone hot and sexy wearing my hot topic t-shirts, damn oh. if justine wasn't watching i would rap to all of you of course people will say it was a different time but as far as i know nothing at that time was to this degree you know wheezywaiter wasn't out there doing blackface congratulations by a million subscribers, by the way, well deserved Craig and yes, there was edgy humor at the time as there is today, but that doesn't excuse it because one could also argue that Shane violated YouTube's community guidelines on sexualizing minors Uh, they had been in place before Shane started creating this content, but it seems like once again no action was taken despite a number of examples, but who am I kidding?
YouTube in 2020 still shows preferential treatment regarding the rules. Shane goes on to talk about how he's changed and The Beauty Drama, which you know, isn't going well considering what happens four days later and this is something that seems a little strange to me across the board and I'm not sure if it's fair . Mentions his merchandise in a couple. of apologies and, you know, right now, if you look at his social media during his highly publicized absence from YouTube, it seems like you see product links and that looks like optically it's like I, um, I don't know which one I am.
Still, I'm still on the fence, but it sure looks weird, so where does YouTube come into all of this? Everywhere, in fact, has been adamantly supportive of the chain from the beginning and you'll notice that in the old days it had a lot of placements on the home page that at the time I think were pre-algorithm so they were put there manually, although I could be wrong on this and only recently, like a few weeks ago or whatever, did YouTube take any action regarding Shane. content and they suspended ads on their channels for content like this that is many, many years old, which is strange to me because it's like you know he posted this stuff on youtube like it's been here the whole time, it's not like one of those situations. where you hire someone and then you find out they love eating other people's lunches and you're like, "Lunchtime is ruined if we had done more research on YouTube and the YouTube community in general, except for the people who criticized it." Shane at that point enabled Shane and content from him over and over again, so for me to evict him from the platform, which I don't think will happen, is hypocritical because YouTube was complicit in creating their platform in the first place.
I think YouTube needs Shane Dawson to solve the problem. shane dawson's problem, just like youtube needed shane in the past since he looked the other way every time shannane came to town or whatever he did again, i didn't watch the videos, throw shane under the bus now would only serve to save youtube pr and do nothing to solve the underlying problem shane's old content is just a symptom of something bigger. I'm not trying to say that shane isn't independently responsible for his own behavior because he is, but I also think it's important for youtube to recognize who provides a platform and how they promote those creators, jstation and many of them, like weird animated stories, These are harmful examples of content that still exists on the platform and technically doesn't break any quote-unquote rules, even though it appears to.
To me, YouTube feels like any action they've taken in situations like these has felt very slow, if they've taken any action at all, it's like YouTube only responds when there's a petition or someone gets arrested. I think YouTube should do it too. Be aware of your algorithm and the incentives that exist and how, from a human psychology standpoint, those incentives can lead people to do bad things because if YouTube doesn't step in to stop that vicious cycle of content at any time, "It will be erased at the bottom, where at least someone will do the worst thing imaginable and it will just sit there at the bottom of the platform, and we as a community on YouTube need to be aware of this and try to take further action." At the time, instead of trying to make up for things years later, all kinds of community and industry leaders supported Shane in the past even though his content was quite objectionable.
I found a reference to a video conference performance. from 2012 which was uh heartbreaking by all accounts I can't if anyone knows about it let me know I just saw bits and pieces on Twitter This is crazy I don't know if many people have seen this but USA Today posted an article. about Shane in 2010 and now. It feels like an Atlanta sketch because it's so absurd to profile Shane and talk about his successes while there's this racist content in the background. Meet Shane Dawson, one of YouTube's biggest stars. Dawson makes a living by producing videos that are published. on YouTube, sharing ad revenue that produces more than enough income to pay the rent on this two-bedroom house in North Hollywood, local teens make a living online, but who knows how this little emo haircut looks , talks about business again, we haven't seen it.
I'm happy talking about what happened during my week and then I do skits and the skits are characters that I have completely invented. My mom is a raging alcoholic who calls me, you know, gay every day and my brother is cutting himself. the kitchen counter and it's just things that don't even come close tonothing since Shane will probably be returning to YouTube soon, at least based on his fiancé's recent video where he apologized a bit for Shane and also a lot of these clips weren't trending. Date seven eight or ten years ago and I understand that Shane has made very insensitive and offensive jokes.
I want to make it clear that these are not just bad jokes from the past that are not a fair characterization of the actions and are unfair to the victims of the content and it is also unfair to Shane because if he continues down that path he will continue to receive negative reactions. I know shane has had to deal with his past more than probably most people in the world because every few years he comes back to ruin it to cancel it, he needs to show us that he fully understands everything that has been imposed on him and what he plans to do in the future I think about how we got to this point and I remember having a couple of video ideas about Shane's content, including some of the recent stuff, but I was afraid that any criticism of him would be taken the wrong way by his audience.
I don't want to invite that kind of chaos into my life, but now I've reached a point where I feel complicit, if I don't say anything as a creator, I feel responsible to my audience to let them know. where I stand on things, especially when I think it can help drive dialogue and I think it's important for all audiences to know that harassing people, it's not the right decision, if I get attacked online, I don't feel the need . come to my defense with any kind of bad faith actions, there is no harassment, if you don't agree with someone, you can have an argument, but there is a line between these, like hate messages and stuff, and threats of violence that were happening in Shane's name, whether he liked it or not because he didn't know those people reigned at the time, so I think that's a power that we all need to be very aware of, so we're here to repair the foundation. from our platform, good luck, I guess, and good. lucky for all of us that's all I had um it was a lot but thanks for watching if you did and I'll see you later.
