The Real Ghostbusters: The Good Episodes - Phelous

May 31, 2021
The Real Ghostbusters is a very important show to me; It was actually my first favorite show growing up and helped shape me into the well-adjusted human being I am today, whose weird and eccentric sick bed covers it up after watching this entire series again. I was

real

ly struck by how well written it was at the beginning. I was

real

ly glad I had shows like this growing up. The real Ghostbusters can be separated into two parts, the original high quality part and the post/abc interference part, so first. off I want to talk about the version of the show that made me a huge Ghostbusters fan.

Yes, I was a fan of this series before the movie and it probably had a little to do with the fact that I had seen The Real Ghostbusters for the first time. three and probably more in cartoons at the time and that of course is not to say that Real Ghostbusters is inferior to the movies, it's not, it actually stands the test of time very well because of the writing, the show was written primarily as a sequel to The Movie and almost all of the show's

good

scripts had the same excellent blend of horror and comedy.

More Interesting Facts About,

the real ghostbusters the good episodes phelous...

Now that I watched the show as young as you probably remember, in fact, watching Real Ghostbusters is the first memory I have of watching anything. I think I can say it worked pretty well because it wasn't dumbed down for kids, now they definitely had some jokes that I missed at the time but they never affected my enjoyment and that's really what makes the show still very fun to watch nowadays. Ghostbusters, we're about kids, beer, teens of any age, we just did what we thought was fun, so one of the first things we should address the show, I guess, would be why it's called Real Ghostbusters.

Instead of just Ghostbusters as the movie, this actually dates back to 1975, when Filmation made a live-action series called Ghostbusters, which actually almost caused the Ghostbusters movie to have to be called something else. Columbia suggested we change it, so we thought about calling it a ghost. Breakers, we couldn't find another

good

title, at one point we had 300 extras on the street screaming Oh my God, Breakers and then whatever, and now all you Ghostbusters and I said we can't do this and we got the property D more big, so Look, you have to do something about it, they gave Filmation some money to use on the movie, but the deal was that any of them could use the title on the TV show, so Filmation could still use the name in this deal and after the blockbuster movies, they decide to revive their Ghostbusters as a cartoon show and they did it slightly before the cartoon based on the movie also note that they were now spelling Ghostbusters as a word and they removed oh yeah, Filmation obviously knew what they were doing.

This caused the need to separate their Ghostbusters cartoons from Filmation's, as well as something of a coup for them, the title Real Ghostbusters was formed, no ma'am, these are the Real Ghostbusters, this also ended up giving a nice distinction between the universe of the cartoons and the movies because well, there were some notable differences, one of the main things is that all the character designs have been modified now there is never any dispute about the resemblance of the actors in the movie, but they decide change them to avoid something or have to pay for them I'm going to deliver the next car and I want you to tell me what an idiot you know, he doesn't look anything like me.
There were also some changes made just to make the characters stand out more in long shots. like giving everyone distinctive hair colors and, of course, different colored jumpsuits. Things like this were a later decision, as you can see in the teaser pilot made to sell the show, everyone still had the same jumpsuits from the movie, albeit in an incredible nod. for continuity and really part of the testament to how good this show was, they actually had a citizen ghost episode explaining why this happened, okay let's bite, what's the first thing we need to do? get rid of our uniforms, they absorbed a terrifying amount of psychokinetic energy during our battle with Gozer will have to be destroyed in the launch pilot.
One of the other most notable things is that Peter looks a little more ville-marie, it's like he's somewhere between him and his final design from Real Ghostbusters, which made him more muscular and gave him much bigger hair (speaking of hair), although he's gone, although Harold Ramis sported a pretty amazing hairstyle in the Ghostbusters movie cartoon, Egon had an even more amazing 80's hairstyle, but for the most part I'd say Egon looked the best. closer to his real life counterpart only with blonde hair, instead now he becomes a little chubbier, definitely the fat one. I know that although they ended up thinning him out later, I actually liked the fatter design better, it kind of suited his extremely carefree personality and was also just a trait that made the breed stand out a little more from the other three.
Winston has to shave like he wouldn't in Ghostbusters 2 and even though he doesn't have many extreme changes going on. She definitely doesn't look like Ernie Hudson here, Janine however got some major changes and really they were all for the better even though her sharp glasses scared me and as a kid Janine also has amazing hair and her design characters was okay, can I say sexy in a kids cartoon? Okay, can I say sexy on a kids box? and Slimer, of course, was changed to look less grotesque and more friendly since they're turning him into the Ghostbusters' kind of mascot.
This was also something that was a bit of a later decision, as you can see a not-so-nice cartoon version of Slimer in the tone pilot, but even though they all had these cosmetic changes, their characters were kept intact thanks to to writing and to himself. talented voice cast, they could all improvise, that was a really important part, they could just take Joe's stuff and deliver it and then from time to time add to it and it was a pleasure to do, you said before that we had his voice recording sessions , Yeah. They absolutely gave me opportunities, you know, to add a line or Hill or a joke along the way and they can make it funnier.
Lorenzo's music was Peter Venkman and I really can't think of a more perfect choice to have done the cartoon version. This character really had the dry, sarcastic wit and goofy charm that the character should have now if you stay still Slimer this won't hurt one bit are you sure this won't hurt him? Absolutely true, oh well, forget it then. I'm leaving. I don't want anyone to touch me again, do it and die again. Slimer, his version of Venkman is a little more understated than Marie's, but he still captured the most important aspects of the character, so it's a slightly different take, but it all still says Peter Venkman now, of course, the voice of the Lorenzo's music is probably best known for Garfield, which was another match made in lasagna heaven and Lorenzo's music increased his energy for Venkman versus Garfield, don't be afraid, dr.
Venkman and his staff are here, this is not fun, I've had fun, haven't I? If anyone else has other good ideas, please don't share them. In fact, I loved this version of Peter Venkman so much that I said I want to be one. him when I grew up, of course, as I got a little older I realized that I couldn't be him, so my expectations became a little more realistic and I just want to be a Ghostbusters. I think one of the reasons I gravitate towards this character is that I can relate to Peter, I mean he's sarcastic, which you know, I am too, sometimes he's a little cynical and there's even a kind of depression. underlying that he uses humor to cope, that's why it bothers me so much to see that stupid thing. thing parading in his skin once the program changed.
I'll talk more about Dave Coulier's version once we get to the forced changes to the show, but suffice it to say that those layers of the character were stripped away and the only thing that was really left was a stupid loudmouth when the idiot came in Kalia was lost because hello Linda , small slips are a big job. He created the Bob Newhart show, he created the Rhoda show, he was an established comedy writer, Emmy-winning comedy record, okay, let's move, I want to get there. Back with the intention of looking up Newhart rip I told him why are you doing this why are you doing voiceovers when you had the power to be a producer in Hollywood eNOS what kind of power would someone come in and say this rotor wear the red dress or the blue dress In this episode I would say that the blue dress has some power.
I have much more power in doing this because I have the power to control my performance. I think that says a lot about Lorenzo's music and why he's so fun to listen to. his delivery on the lines is really what gives them that extra edge, so it really makes sense to hear that he cared about the art, that I have to go after that thing right before it hurts some patient, plus, it'll eat Slimer if we don't. Yeah, we didn't really have to rush if someone couldn't make it, we were all good enough to do each other's voices, we thrived from time to time.
I was one, for example, one time Lorenzo was able to do it, so we all took turns. play Lorenzo and I think Frank Wilfred did the best Lorenzo could but I came in second and that was okay, I personally like Maurice LaMarche is Lorenzo a little more than Frank based on the Garfield show but it's still a little hard to hear someone else do Garfield's. voice, however, Maurice LaMarche and Frank Welker are probably the best in the world at achieving it. As for Egon, I really can't imagine anyone other than Maurice LaMarche voicing him; He's probably the only other person in the world besides Harold Ramos who really nails this character.
Maurice LaMarche really seems to understand what motivates Egon, which is part of what makes him so good at playing the character, and one afternoon in the stadium would be good for you, yes, as if a fungus on the brain would be good for me. Did anyone mention it? mushroom Egon, now, as long as we don't disappear, we'll be pretty crazy, and while I also loved Harold Remus' interpretation of the character, I mean, of course, he originated it. I think I like Maurice LaMarche and Egon just a little bit more. Ghostbusters, right, hey, Don, can you do that?
I think he is infringing on our trademark. I've seen enough. They said: stay away from impressions. Whatever you do, there are no impressions. Okay, my background was stand-up comedy and as an impressionist, so I said let's go. You know, it's like tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, not breathe, you know, not make an impression, I don't see any other way to do a gone except to do Ramos, it's really hard to imagine Egon being played in a very different way than Ramos. --So whatever his deal against prints, it's probably lucky for the program that Maurice LaMarche decided to do it anyway.
What a genius. Yes I know. Maurice LaMarche truly is one of the most talented voiceover artists and impressionists in the business. He also had to play a lot of other characters on the show and usually you didn't know they were him, it wasn't unusual for Frank and I to be the multi-voice guys to play, you know, five characters each, six characters each. in the program. I was lucky to have two voice actors in the main cast who were so good at additional voices like this as they tended to use them quite a bit, one of the unfortunate reasons for this is that although at the time they didn't.
In fact, I have to pay them extra for a couple of extra voices. Now, one of the best things about the Real Ghostbusters show is that it can expand on certain things that were stirred up in the movie, like when they hinted at a relationship between Egon and Jeanine, it was always that way. It's great that Janine's affections were played on the deadpan Egon and they even went on a few dates during the show. The show is over, so I can confess my feelings to you. Did you really feel that way? affection at this time, so this made him feel particularly bad when they had the jeanine and lewis thing during the second movie, a lot of the time with Egon was even though he would be very flat in the way he talked about many events.
It's not that he didn't feel emotion, it's just that he didn't express it much. I just want you to know that I'm having a wonderful time. He wasn't as expressionless as he should have been, but in the studio Do You Know Arsenio? When does he leave? Ghanaian join yourself and here we go. I'm having a wonderful time and he was so dead that we both laughed out loud because the idea behind it is that he's telling the truth. wonderful, ha ha, Maurice LaMarche was the one who stayed in the series, the one who voiced Egon the longest until reaching the extreme Ghostbusters.
The one who stayed in second place the longest and the only other memberThe main cast member who stayed for the entire run of Real Ghostbusters was Frank Welker as Ray. He and Stantz really captured the character's overzealousness. This is great. We have a classic disturbing year. It's like the whole place is turning evil by having a boy alive. This is great. I love a man who enjoys his work. Ray helped balance things out. eliminate his positive attitude against the cynicism of the other boys or even just illuminate someone's more realistic view of the situation and although he was the fun-loving character of the group, he is also the second smartest after Egon oh no no, what? what's happening? than others and we'll fix it while the show as a whole was still smart.
I mean, winston zeddemore was played by Arsenio Hall originally. Arsenio was waiting to come in, he sat with him and talked for a minute and someone was gone and I wasn't. I realized who came out, it was Ernie Hudson, who had played Winston in the movie, so one time our sin and I were talking, he came out and they called Arsenio and he turned around and looked at me because that's it. Bob, I'm taking on the guy you played in the movie. This must be some kind of formality. Lo and behold, Arsenio got the job. This was certainly a strange situation.
Apparently Ernie Hudson was given the impression that he basically had the part and went down. Auditioning was really just a formality, then he was quite surprised when he found out that his character went with someone else who said that Arsenio Hall did a great job with Winston and that he was still the realist on the most realistic Ghostbusters team. . Venkman dr. Dr. Spangler. sequin dr. Stan Zeddmore's Doctor Dr. Spangler, but I'm not a I'm on a roll, certain elemental imbalances have asserted themselves in other words, you don't have to answer precisely. One of the particularly fun things about Winston in this series was that he was the most grandiose of the main four.
In Ghostbusters, he usually wasn't very over-the-top, but every once in a while he would come up with a stronger line and it would be cool, ah, yeah, ah, sweet, there's always been that kind of annoying Winston stuff. of being left out or not as focused on him as the other three Ghostbusters, but the original version of the show gave Winston pretty much the same focus and many stories that would center on him, what's that parallelogram? turbulence and dangerous convergences across rivers I can't believe anyone would want to go there. I would, yeah, I thought you were locked, unlocked, shooting us, they did it with digits, unfortunately it didn't really stay that way throughout the series.
Fire, you stayed for a season after a while, changes happened, but then he ended up having a big hit with his talk show and he didn't have the same amount of time to do the cartoon anymore and Buster Jones took over the voice . This is Winston, you read, take it easy, slammer, we'll get him back. Buster Jones is Winston although he's not really bad or something wasn't exactly the same and sounded a bit old for Winston. The other problem he certainly wasn't. Jones' fault was that he never had the same fun times that he used to have.
Now I can say it with certainty and I think that for a lot of people, Laura Somers, Janine Melnitz is the definitive version of the character, luck and attitude were perfect and helped. of course the show had more opportunities to give Jeanine more times to shine in the movie. Oh, it better be good. Jeanine Slimer brought this increase in trouble and if you're not down and ready to go in five minutes, you're fired. he was smart and witty, normally he'd be the one to take down the Ghostbusters if they were getting a little silly about something or getting a little proud of the rubbish it contained, no thanks, come on ma'am. favish um, I'll show you where they discover new ways to do stupid things.
Janine was a strong character, which was really nice to see, in fact, she almost never got captured or she had to play a damsel in distress, which was all too common. it actually happened a few times or the opposite happened and it was up to Janine to save the rest of the group and she even got to be a Ghostbuster several times Janine get out while you still can't do anything we're here to rescue you listen Proteus is one of the gods paramounts like Gozer, uh, yeah, and Jeanine even thwarted a God once and it was really nice that even though there was a romantic plot between her and Egon, it was never her defining trait as a character.
Egon probably left it there. I love that guy, but I'd forget his head if it wasn't welded to his collarbone. The Green Ghost of the Hotel, of course, got his name here and although he was never called that in the movie, most people would just refer to him. him as Slimer and later is a character in the sequel Ghostbusters 2 due to the cartoon show. I doubt he would have reappeared if there wasn't a cartoon of the toys. Unsurprisingly, Slimer was the second Frank Welker character to voice on the show. He's pretty much the best at doing many non-human type characters and he almost did Slimer as one of the voices he does for the gremlins.
That's right, we had to shut down the gremlins all the time. It's pretty cool because you can definitely still hear the gremlins. Influenced by Slimer's voice in the previous

episodes

, the cartoon even explained the path from him terrorizing the hotel to ending up as their kind of pet after the containment unit was closed and all the ghosts were gone and after The Battle of Gozer Slimer began. hanging around the firehouse and Egon wanting to take a closer look at a ghost guy more willing to keep him around now. The main thing about Slimer, of course, is that he loves to eat his slimmer Peter, which of course led to a conflict with him.
Slimer Peter, wait, let me explode. once is that really too much dad, it was this conflict with Peter that really made the Slimer scenes work and then you would have this angrier reaction towards Slimer offset by someone like Ray Arginines, a kinder attitude towards him. Oh, Peter, take it easy. Discipline Slimer out of shame, Slimer, you've been a mischievous ghost and even though Peter was constantly threatening to arrest him, they still showed that he cared about Slimer from time to time, without exaggerating, just turning him into another ring, hand over your weapons or it'll be me .
Forced to do something unfortunate to your friend, no one messes with this friend, but I understood when you write a show with a guy named Slammer, there are times you just want to hit him really, really hard because you can basically, how about, no? ? It would be fun to send him out into the world and get a job, do something worthwhile with his life or dead, as you wish, and put him in a situation where I could beat him up endlessly, so my joy was his pain. Slimer normally just talked nonsense, but with a few words scattered around, let's say, he got the gist right in the original version, then he just wouldn't shut up, but originally this made it funny when Ray or Jeanine managed to get it.
Wow, let me get this straight, you say. Victor put you there, also made it funnier when he actually blurted out a whole sentence, yeah, Slimer just yelled, oh yeah, this was a syndicated episode, but I still guess some people missed it because of the usual words Slimer nonsense. It's interesting to rewatch the show and see how much time they actually put into the characters and how much deeper it makes the entire show itself and with the much worse

episodes

in the other seasons, it really highlights how much more shallow the show had become. It's like this we always film together as a cast, if we can trap and contain the ghost master, the force field will disappear, that's great if Egon, according to Who's Who in the Spirit World, the ghost master is classified as a class 1111, even if we could use our traps and launchers we were never able to hold it down, the fact that they did the recordings together like this really shows it and I think you achieved a more group feel with the characters that probably would have been lost if everyone had recorded their lines by Separately, it also led to some improvisational lines that help bring an episode to life, although there seems to be a lot of improvisation, at most, it would certainly never make an episode our biggest nightmare: always having the music of Maurice LaMarche Lorenzo and Frank Walker sitting next to each other because it was like the kids in class that you would never want to have together in the same row, there would be this chaos, the humor became very uh, like I said, you would have a lot of humor in the bathroom, a lot of fart sounds , God, it's very difficult, you know?
I knew it was hard for me to think of anything I could repeat to you if someone saved their outtake reel, you know? I guess we were always late to this before they got pretty quick, even between takes if necessary. improvising would turn into a roast of the Friars doing those characters because it wouldn't be placed in the booth, there was like a big room, you had all the actors, cities next to each other in this room, arguing with each other and sometimes, they got really really funny and the things that weren't in the episode, we're often the funniest of all because if we rip each other off and improvise and improve things that were too gross to write in the cartoon episode, I really wish I could hear these recording sessions so bad and they keep making fun of me with that on the DVD, when a cast really likes each other a lot of times it raises the level of acting and it really seems like there was a sense of family with the cast of Real Ghostbusters, working with Lorenzo's music was great and they taught me how to play the ukulele and seriously, this is not real in cartoons and he was so generous and sweet that Lorenzo protected his face and thought that gave him that. a certain mystique and he was right, the headshot of him showed him eating a giant hamburger with a pair of reflective sunglasses and a beret and you had absolutely no idea what the man's face looked like.
He was one of the kindest, sweetest men and I remember him afterwards. That first season he has everything in his beautiful house for Christmas dinner. You have, you know the cast, you know the friends of the cast, but you meet your friends on the show and they go their separate ways, but he really turned it into a family. I really love listening to it. stories like this and hearing how the voice actors would do these things and help each other, another thing that I'm sure really helped elevate the performances was the script editor and writer of many notable episodes of the series, Joe Straczynski would be quite In For the most part, all the recording sessions were not considered pro forma when I was working on Ghostbusters for the story, going to the recording sessions was like why are you here, but because the show was so characteristic of Orion, since many times the humor was very specific. and the references were very indirect, someone had to be able to explain to the actors what this means and work with them on the characters, a lot of animated shows are already time, we are very superficial when it comes to the characters, you just, you know, run skip most of it. part, but they delved into the characters, the fact that Joe Straczynski came out and did that really shows Carey's head for this series and without a doubt, he is one of the main reasons why the show had the quality that it had of the 78 that were. done that first year, I probably saw three hundred proposals and premises that came in before Radler came in with ten premises.
I chose one and that was a high wear rate. I set a very high standard for Ghost Busters in terms of the stories we get. I would say this really shows up considering how few weapons I think there were in the original series and you have an easy comparison when you can look at the rest of the series where Straczynski had left as story editor, so as mentioned, Straczynski He wrote some of the best episodes of the show, like When Halloween Was Forever, Citizen Ghost, and Take Two, and even if something had a stupid-sounding premise, he would actually make it work, like doing a story involving chickens after that I handed in the script for Chicken He. with claws, which was a little crazy.
Joe Metra called me on the phone and said, are you okay? No, we love it, we just care about you in the chicken. He understood the fact that the plot revolves around chickens and that being a stupid thing is a plot point. There is a guy who goes crazy because he lives next to a chicken shop and he gets so tired of them that he summons a demon to make them disappear from the face of the planet, the demon becomes a laughingstock for having to grant such a stupid wish and he ends up eating the Ghostbusters so he can turn it around and try to get some dignity.
When you compare this to the ABC interference episode Chickengeist, where the premise is chickens that are just some kind of practical thing that exists and instead of the episode and the characters waking up to the fact that it's a stupid plot, instead it feels. as if it wereinsulting your intelligence, this is just a good example of how you can approach a similar topic and leave it pending writing. It can be an interesting plot with good humor or just something a little embarrassing. Another strong point of the series was, naturally, the fort. The ties he kept to the movie, as mentioned above, actually explained the series of events that led to some of the changes that the Ghostbusters direct in the cartoon versus the movie, this came up right before you went up to fight Gozer, They are your new uniforms, the second order.
The goal of the business is to rebuild the containment grid so that we have a place to put the ghosts. This is how I think I'll make it bigger. I love it so much that they even have touches like this to explain which is another thing that really shows off. how much they didn't want to try to write this show for kids and I can say that I appreciated it as a kid and I appreciate it even more now and even though the events of the movie took place within the Real Ghostbusters universe, the episode took actually involved in the production of the movie very Aykroyd and Raymond, what is that legal?
So it happened and then the movie was the kind of biopic that shows these events. Another reason that helped the show maintain such strong ties to the movie was the fact that Joe Magic and Michael Sea Grows for the producers of the original movie were also executive producers of the cartoon, so they obviously knew what they were doing in when it came to Ghostbusters and they also gave Straczynski a lot of freedom with the writing that the show would create as well. In different ways the Ghostbusters had to solve problems instead of just always going in with their proton streams and capturing a ghost in a trap, they had to deal with things like possession, vampires, werewolves, trolls, imps, hell, they even had to fight Cthulhu in one episode, designs.
Some of these ghosts and creatures would also get pretty creepy, what also adds a lot of depth is that sometimes the ghosts on the show weren't even bad. Some of them actually just went back to the good or evil done in life or went away. They said goodbye to a loved one. I wasn't looking for anything. I was looking for you. I just wanted to tell you that I love you for the last time. Casey. Jones was an engineer, he died in a train crash, so I thought his ghost wouldn't rest until he fixed things by preventing a train crash, he wanted to save someone's life, not take it now, during the original run, there were episodes produced for the first season on ABC and the others were produced for a syndication package and the syndicated episodes didn't have to go through network approval and weren't specifically for Saturday morning, they were able to do a little more so you could have spookiest designs. for some of the ghosts or creatures and a super creepy Peter flirting with more women yes, definitely too extreme for Saturday mornings, the main difference between the two was the presence of rock in the centers and practices or bsp or just plain BS.
I am really very grateful. there was also the syndicated package because I can't imagine if we had only had one season of good ABC episodes, because there were only 13 of them, they earned a whopping 65 from syndication, giving the series 78 quality episodes compared to the later sixty-two. The /abc interference meant that good episodes were still playing long after changes happened to the show, which made them easier to ignore since I could always go back to the quality ones without saying I didn't notice because I did. I did and it made me sad. I always hated the Peter episodes that sounded bad and it made me miserable to revisit them.
The most you can get after the original version of the program, although it is the animation, sometimes there were quite a few bugs like them. clothes would magically change in one shot and then he would have the wrong hair color or the wrong jumpsuit color, causing the more extreme ones, like Egon, to decide to distance themselves from themselves or the white Winston. I have seen that it will turn you white. It's also noticeable in the syndicated episodes where there is If there was less money for animation, there would also be a little less movement and sometimes awkward pauses between lines.
The Lord of Evil, yes, but I bet he can't dance to save his soul, but those are all minor problems. I'll take them all day for something with that and a good script instead of something with pretty animation that's brain dead and saying I actually prefer the overall look of the show at the beginning versus the later seasons, it kind of has a vibe. of anomie that makes a lot of sense since many artists working on the storyboards were influenced by anime at the time and sometimes the show even has extreme anime moments that were quite fun to see in something like Ghostbusters, but the real version of the Real Ghostbusters really holds up.
The Test of Time is still very clever writing for the most part and makes me laugh out loud quite often. The second incarnation of the real Ghostbusters gave me a few laughs, but for the most part the magic was gone, so next time. We'll talk about the show it became after the network decided to ruin everything with Snyder and the Real Ghostbusters, but please, if you're going to watch a show for something really good, just watch ABC's first season and the syndicated episodes . I can't recommend them. those pretty high stuff, the stuff that came after really isn't even the same show, isn't it a little strange that a group of

ghostbusters

has a ghost living with them, strange, strange, eccentric, sick, that covers it.
