But I missed. I missed one and again". , and that's why I made it." Michael Jordan is one of the most famous basketball players in the world, but he didn't start out brilliantly. In high school, he couldn't make the basketball team because he was too short and his skills were not good enough. They know that learning requires effort and they learn from criticism. They are inspired by people who do it well. Michael Jordan has those qualities. Another person with a “growth mindset” is Dwayne Johnson. He was expelled from the Canadian Football League in its early years. He could have given up, but he didn't, he worked hard to meet the challenge. He now he has become a very famous movie star and one of my favorites. . (Laughs) You know what? Professional coaches or scouts are not looking for athletes who are just skilled, but rather players who are willing to learn, learn, and do their best in practice.

They want people with a “growth mindset.” They don't want people who think they are good enough, that they don't need to learn, and that they can't be taught. These people have a "fixed mindset." “Strong mindset” is the opposite of growth. They believe that being good or bad is innate. They won't learn. They are afraid of challenges. They give up easily and are very defensive. When someone gives them advice, they feel criticized. And when they see others doing well, they feel threatened. What kind of mentality do you think I have? Well, let me tell you a story.

Reading has always been difficult for me and even now I still see it as a challenge. From kindergarten to fourth grade, my reading was always slightly below grade level. Every night I read aloud to my parents and that was the worst time of the day. (Laughs) Of course, every time I read, I always make mistakes. Misreading words, reading words that aren't there, and omitting words that are there, as well as punctuation, are commonplace. But every time my parents try to correct me, I feel very uncomfortable. I would say they are wrong. I might even collapse. I would do the same with my friends and teachers.
So do other topics and activities. I think I know how to do everything and when I discover that I don't, I feel bad. I thought I would be able to master what the teacher taught me. You wouldn't guess it. I learned to read and sometimes it wasn't easy. I feel so bad. Negative thoughts arose: "You are inferior. You can't do anything. This is so easy." Suddenly, I felt tears streaming down my face, right in front of my friends and teachers. In my mind I said, "No, no, no... please, no." I couldn't control my emotions anymore. That's where the problem begins.
You see, I lost control of my emotions. I didn't hear anything and I stopped thinking. I found it difficult to live with. When I finished crying I felt very tired. This is very unhealthy. I don't want to be that person either. I wanted to know why I felt this way and the emotions were so strong. In fifth grade I was able to answer this question for the first time. Because I learned what a “growth mindset” is and what a “solidification mindset” is. I'm learning how to transform my "fixed mindset" into a "growth mindset" and have a king's mindset.
I think we can all have these two mindsets: a “growth mindset” and a “solidification mindset.” I believe this because I have both. I have a growth mindset in soccer, basketball, change, learning new languages, etc. I also believe that we can transform the “solidified mindset” into a “growth mindset” and then have a king mindset. Maybe not a king like Michael Jordan, but we can all be kings in our own way, we just need a little help. Dad and I are reading Carol. "Winning Mindset" written by Tuwek, Carol. Duwek is a professor and psychologist who researched and proposed the concepts of "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset." His book helped me know that I'm not the only one who occasionally has a "fixed mindset." But the best advice I received came from my teachers and school counselor.
The advice they gave me only had three letters in English: "Y-E-T", "Not yet... just." They asked me to add this word to everything I said. "I can not do it." "I haven't been able to do it yet." "I haven't understood it yet." I feel like as long as I try a little harder, I can do it. I still struggle with my “fixed mindset” from time to time. But now I know why I feel depressed and uncomfortable. If you have a "fixed mindset" from time to time, I'm proof that you can overcome it. I also had difficulties while preparing this talk.
But every day I am better than the day before. That's why I say I defeated him, and the fact that I'm here today is proof. Thank you. (Applause) (Applause)
