The M3 MacBook Air "Problems"

Apple launched its new MacBook Air M3, there is a 13-inch model and this is its 15-inch model, but despite it being what many would say is the best laptop in this segment, many concerns and complaints were raised. right in the announcement, like when I tweeted about it, there were just people who I think had legitimate concerns about it, but there are also things that seem a little wrong. I want to go over it, so right off the bat, this is the M2 MacBook Air in a 13-inch model and this is the M3 and the surface anization on the new M3 versions at least in the darker colors, so The midnight color and space black are supposed to have this seal as a kind of coating on it to prevent fingerprints or to reduce the presence of fingerprints and when I tried it on the space black model last year it seemed quite noticeable, but for some reason I I'll demonstrate real quick, so this is the M21 when I smudge around my nose and my face, which is gross, but just to get the point across, the grease appears right there, kind of spots appear, if I do the same thing on the again, I would have imagined it would be much smaller, but I feel like there wasn't much of a difference and I was surprised, I mean look at me, I'm like rubbing my face with laptops, but I was surprised at how present these spots were, uh, and no I know if I have a lemon or something. but when I try to clean it it looks just as blurry so my impression is that it's a little better than the unsealed version but it's not like a fingerprint proof material if that's what you expect, well on the real flesh from This video, okay, first I want to talk about what I think is the biggest change or update to the M3 product: the ability of the M3 MacBook Air to connect to two external displays now so you can take this out of the lid. it has to be closed, you can't use the built in laptop screen, only if you are connecting two screens it will now work.

I've always only had one display controller that would drive the external displays, it was like a single controller that could handle 6K output for externals. Now, what I think they are doing now on the MacBook Air M3. I think they are just redirecting. the internal 5K display driver uh and just pumping it up, there's no malice or weird tricks, that's just the nature of the hardware, you can't have more than those two displays running at any given time and I see the complaints like that's the case. That said, as the hardware stands now, I think there is some kind of cheating that was going on in the past, as when I think about what's going on here, it doesn't make sense for Apple to simply offer free features like this is simply Apple is not in the business of doing that well.

I think what happened is that Apple felt pressure to do this from enterprise customers, like for a lot of people I know, various types of high-end customers who buy Apple hardware and kept After Apple silicon, they continued to use their Intel-based MacBooks because those things could run two external displays without issue and I think Intel made a bet that business customers could pay a premium and buy that Pro line to get that extra display. external things and I don't think people wanted to spend that money and I think Apple felt pressured, they said, "You know what I think we have to do this if we want a lot of enterprise customers to switch to Apple Silicon I think that's the only thing that It makes sense to me why else would they do this right?

It seems too good for Apple's nature to be true, but I think it's a win. I don't think it's perfect, but having two external displays on a MacBook Air level. basic is not bad, but now you need to have peripherals connected to that device. The second point of contention is the initial configuration of 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage I hate it every time I see it like this. Issues at hand: First, the idea that the initial configuration is only 8 GB of RAM, but the second issue is the price of upgrades Now I'm going to address the base 8 GB of RAM first.

I don't think that number is. terrible in the sense that there are a lot of people, I would say the vast majority of people even consider that this machine would be perfectly fine with 8 gigs of RAM for five six years and they would never realize it. Any difference in workflow if they had 16 GB of RAM? I firmly believe that I have done a lot of testing. I have shown them to you. I think there is a lot of clickbait on YouTube trying to build the idea. that you absolutely need 16 gigs of RAM, but anger baiting doesn't take away from the reality of the data if you use it for regular use. 8 gigs of RAM is enough for the vast majority of people, but the other issue at hand is the cost of upgrades and I wouldn't be having this super sweaty conversation about RAM in a MacBook if it weren't for the fact that they are priced crazy for those upgrades, like going from 8 gigs of RAM to 16, it costs $200, actually I think it's like five times the industry price for similar Ram upgrades right now, but because everything is ready, you have So making that decision up front now, if you think about the math, is literally 20% more money to spend on an additional eight gigs.

RAM is so stupid it eats my heart out every time I look at the configuration price, but I think there's a little bit of a solution here, I think for most people who look at that as the price configurator and say, wow! it's a stupid amount of money and it is, but usually you have a strict budget, you say I have 100 dollars or whatever 12200 00 dollars and that's my limit, like I don't want to go any further than that. Then what do I do? The simple solution this time is that you don't get the M3 because they have a great product, the M2, which is 100 dollars cheaper and if you buy it on refb or use it, it's even more, you can get like 15 20.% off only for moving up to the previous generation and if you want to save even more money, the M1 MacBook airs are even cheaper, which brings me to the conversation about that slight performance gain over the years from M1 to M3 because that has been another complaint that we keep seeing come up and it's like wow these new chips aren't much better at all, they're not, but that's a good thing in terms of pricing when they release this M3 product and they have to reduce the price. an older one and if the profits aren't massive, they aren't, just buy the old one.

I think in all my years on YouTube, I don't think I've ever made a video where I said, don't buy the new one, buy the old one because that's usually common sense, right, if you want to get the best value, the older generation It will always be like that so I don't bother with it but think about this particular time in this period because the M2 and M1 had such close performance to the M3 and they are much cheaper and Apple has a refurbishment store that offers discounts more pronounced that it simply does not make sense to buy the M3 product if you are on a tight budget unless you need the dual external display now the CPU gains since M1 have been limited, the gains when it comes to graphics performance although it is more notable, it's just that it depends quite a bit on the app you're using now, the battery life on the MacBook air M315 was very similar to last year's M2 product, it just seems to drain a little faster with heavier loads, but I think which generally when you look at Apple's website, there's a reason they're comparing this performance a lot on the M3.
