Jun 06, 2021
Hey, what's up with mkbhd here? Okay, listen to me. Flagship phones are much better and also much more expensive, which has made the overall phone landscape much more interesting. Stay with me here, so there was a time not too long ago, maybe like eight years ago, where smartphone prices. it used to max out at 550 which was the highest it got so these are phones like the droid , flagships or non-flagships, but As we have all seen, the prices of these flagship phones have not increased so slowly since then, the Google Play

m7, one of my favorite phones, 599 rip, the Google Play

edition

and then, In 2014, the Galaxy S5 was launched for 6.49 and the iPhone 6 Plus was launched. to 7 49 and in 2017 we launched the iPhone 10 for a thousand dollars and raised a lot of eyebrows so now fast forward to 2020 and a next generation foldable smartphone will cost you between 1500 and 2000 so we just got the announcement too. here from the

galaxy

s20 fan edition and at first, at least for me, it was a little confusing trying to answer the question about what is a fan edition, as we saw we did the note 7 fan edition back in the day that the note 7 had has battery issues, but what is a fan edition?

Who is just for fans only for fans only for fans? But the phone itself has a Snapdragon 865, almost the highest-end chip available, less than the 865, plus there's a big, shiny six and a half. 120 hertz screen, but it's a 1080p panel and you can tell it's not their highest end and normally I wouldn't mention bezels that are already so thin, but hey, there's a bit of bezel here and it's a flat screen that in reality Like and you're also looking at a 4,500 milliamp hour battery with wireless and reverse wireless charging, triple 12, 12, and 8-megapixel cameras, a 32-megapixel selfie camera, and the smallest punch-hole ever, an endurance rating IP68 waterproof and a metallic tan plastic back. the side rails and the entire rear are plastic in one of these six colors it comes in, so this one is blue, it actually looks even darker in person than in the official images, but yeah, it's a What is it?

More Interesting Facts About,

the galaxy s20 fan edition hear me out...

It's cut out.

galaxy

s20 basically with better battery life and a better cropped selfie camera, but also worse cameras. It's not hard to tell exactly which one is the fan edition, but then the 699 price tag finally solidified it for me. See, not the fan edition. It doesn't really have a theme, but in fact you can probably argue that the biggest fans are actually the least likely to buy this fan edition, but in reality the fan edition is another variant of a phone that Samsung can offer to another competitive price because that's what they do just because they can, Samsung right now offers a phone at basically every significant price, from super cheap to the highest and latest generation foldable phones and everything in between, and we know that this is Samsung's long-standing strategy. just giving you as many options as they can to see what sticks, but seeing it actually laid out in front of you is a different thing if you actually go to samsung.com right now and sort their smartphones by price from lowest to highest of all. the phones that they will sell you right now will offer you a phone at 99 129 199 225 325 350 425 475 499 599 650 699 750 799 850 950 1000 1050 1200 1980 32.99 and there is much much more that I didn't even show So that's a lot of phones at a lot of prices different and we knew, like I said, this has always been Samsung's thing, but when phones maxed out at $600, there was a lot less variety of different things you could do. with a smartphone to offer different people different things, so my original point is now that the ceiling of smartphone technology has become much higher and much better.

Yes, of course, naturally, the prices of flagships have increased over time, but now there is also much more. Variety and much more difference between all these different average smartphone prices than ever before. It's the birth and flowering of this incredible mid-range price level of great phones that take all the high-end stuff and dial it down, so fan. The edition isn't just for fans, it's for anyone looking for another different phone that offers an attractive set of boxes ticked at 6.99, so that's one thing and then Samsung revealed another really interesting thing in its report, which was the sales volume that we now have.

I'm not getting exact numbers or anything of course, but I found it really interesting. They mentioned that the flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra was the most popular phone in the S20 line during the first month of sales, the one that made all the headlines, the one that all these. Early adopters and enthusiasts bought the most popular phone in the first week, but then over time volume buyers caught up and surpassed it to the point where the ultra is the least popular phone in the s20 line now and the cheaper, the s20 and the s20. Plus, they're in the hands of a lot more people, so the curve for phones that people buy and whose prices starts looking like this and then quickly starts to shift up, there are a lot more buyers and purchases and the actual volume and the sales at this lower level. at mid-range price than high-end, even though we devote all our attention to high-end flagship products, so naturally for these smartphone companies a lot of attention and focus is given to this price phone mid range. where there are a lot of customers and being able to offer them a lot of different things, including sets of really unique boxes ticked on phones like this, when also a lot of us enthusiasts pay a lot of attention to what they are doing at the forefront. its densest material and if you think about it, that's why we use the word flagship, right, it comes from the ship in the group of ships that has the flag, the first, the largest, the most heavily armed, the most important , whoever pays the most attention to that is only partially true, but we'll stick with it and by the way, that applies to all smartphone companies, not just Samsung, which is why cheaper iPhones outsell thousand dollar iPhones regularly.
The OnePlus Nord puts them on the map again. in a way that none of their flagships could have for the average person and xiaomi and huawei's dominance comes primarily from their mid and low priced phones, rather than their thousand dollar ones, so it's a well known trend, so anyway, yeah, that's just What I wanted to express I mentioned for sure on the waveform podcast, but I never articulated it in video form, so there it is, but hey, in case I told you You ask, this fan edition of the S20 is a surprisingly good phone, I mean.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, you know there are plenty of other good phones at this price, but hey, after just a few days of using it, I really like this balance, especially of a large 120 hertz flat OLED display and lots of high end. parts to pair with it, if you think about it, many other Samsung 120 Hertz OLEDs are curved at the edges or fold in half, so I've enjoyed this screen for everything from daily use to gaming, video viewing and of course with the high refresh rate remained fast along with the Qualcomm chip that actually ships with the 5g version in each region, so no matter where you are, if you get the 749 version 5g of this s20 fan edition you're actually getting a snapdragon 865 with no exynos anywhere so that's pretty cool now the triple camera system has been scaled down a bit from the rest of the s20 series but honestly I don't think it's missing much for most daily use, even in low light, it hasn't suffered as much as some thought. and while it doesn't have a spatial zoom greater than 30x, it also doesn't have the autofocus problems of the ultra's huge sensor, but there are some video limitations and the plastic on the back might get the most negative attention just because, yes, plastic.
It has a bad reputation among thousand dollar flagship phones, but for this 6.99 phone I think it actually works pretty well here again, less likely to break when dropped. My biggest complaint with this plastic is the finish, it just doesn't feel as good. High quality and shows fingerprints a little more than usual. I've seen others that hide them much better, but hey, most people put a case on their phone anyway, as they keep reminding me, so yeah, plastic to lower the price turns out to be a good decision here, this phone is a good buy for a lot of people, it really has a great screen, it has great battery life on this phone, with security, good performance, good cameras and then you have the promised three years of software updates or three generations of promised software updates and also that Samsung says we are going to get many have listed it as the iPhone 11 competitor because naturally it will be launched at the same price at which the iPhone 11 was launched and at which it is still sold to this day, but of course we all know that the new iPhones are like a month away, so we should probably stick to comparing them to those when they come out, but I also think it's interesting because the rumored launch price of the Pixel 5 also turns out to be exactly $6, 99, which would be very interesting to see is also Not yet seen in October, but overall there is a lot of action now at this price, so that's it for now.
