I've never seen the strongest Legacy it's great it's absolutely amazing you know we'll see it today as we go down to Thailand for the supercar race hopefully we'll also get a win for everyone here but to see. this convoy and seeing so many examples of Holden heritage is really wonderful I think no matter what brand the enthusiast is on an occasion like this it has to mark in the history books it's just never going to happen again um it's a aim for heartstrings, isn't it?

event in january From 2020 and later today some classic Holdens will experience the track, but today in the eyes of thousands of Holden fans here at The Bend it's all about the packed grandstand at Turn 17 which has been temporarily renamed Holden Heaven for this purpose. weekday just good here we are in the band hello face hello how you gonna fletch great yourself good thank you that's good you're dressed in the theme you're part of the era what a beautiful car we have a fv hole a I've been here since 1957.
I think it's yours, yes, it's my car, it's my pride. and joy, there is no doubt that it is a beautiful restoration, what can you tell us about it? So I restored it when I was 15 as part of a school project, it's a family car now, it's been in the family since midday so I was very lucky to have inherited that one and decided to continue its story. Carol. This is a contest car. For that yes, but it was a, it was my love and luckily it was left in good enough condition to also be a concours car, so it's absolutely fantastic in terms of history, do you know much about its early years?
So yes, my grandfather. I obviously bought it new in '57 so it was built around June of that year so it's kind of a mid-run huh so it's also a special sedan so it was kind of a range extras high that my grandfather wanted to upgrade so he sold it to his dad and kept it until his 90's when he stopped driving and then I inherited it in the 2000's when he went into a nursing home and I thought the right thing to do was restore it to its former glory. Is he still with us? Unfortunately no, but I was 100 years old when he passed away. a nice entry and this was kind of a memorial project for him.
There is nothing more beautiful than this. Grandpa's car and you still have it and I can see you have that passion. It's not just a case of oh yeah it's a family car this affects you deeply doesn't it certainly it's definitely been something I enjoy telling the story and I enjoy having that heritage there that a lot of the cars have No It is from the number of hands that have passed over the years without a doubt driving the car. How does it make you feel? Does it make you imagine what it would be like to turn back the clock to 1957?
I definitely think so I think I was born in the wrong era definitely um I have some of those moments where I think I wish I had been around when these cars came out so I could have had that experience but I really enjoy the kind of second hand nostalgia that I get when I'm out and it's nice to talk to people about their stories of working at Holden or driving these cars as a kid especially now the legacy means a lot to all of us yeah I think today has been quite a memorable day just i hit zero zero zero zero again then for the first time so um i think it's a fitting day in that sense cara i think one beautiful thing about it is while you're driving this car it's going to be in your family as long as you hold on to it I know but your great grandfather will always be with you yeah 100 and that's also why we call the car george because it's in his memory a bit even though it's her george it's geo rge is still the name we like to call there so so expensive i believe in the tradition of you from your family your great grandfather your grandfather and you putting away the car it's a beautiful story and i'm so glad you were able to share that with us and you brought it here today thank you fletch now it's time for john to support the holdens shirt how are you doing buddy im great fletch how are you good having fun here today always love it on the bend great place have a nice trip here oh beautiful yeah from birdwood to here it was really great 1955 fj uh whats the story here the story of the vehicle is i bought a 53 fj special and then i always loved wagons and utes so i started doing what you found john i know why you love wagons mate, yeah, I know it's Comfortable in the back, right?
Yeah sorry yeah go ahead so we started restoring the ute and love for the van. I bought this one from Barry in New South Wales. I completely restored it and never looked back. It's been fantastic and now. I'm done with the ute so I have all three. I have a special sedan, a wagon and a ute so that's a pretty high priced collection. our name on the side not just to stand out but just to give it some meaning because chris and i are just passionate and we've restored the thing from the ground up and i really love doing it so it's been challenging relationships are tested sometimes , but we're over this and we're happy, well she followed you here today so you couldn't have been too wrong.
John actually did three laps in a mustang supercar. the other day driving it and i think i wanted to switch to the uh and co-driver but uh no i think it saw the light and stuck with me so there you go mate yeah now these old vehicles uh look at the camaraderie huh? It's the excitement that we all get out of them and show up at events like this and especially this is very special John when we look inside this vehicle like in the past. There is no custom work. thats how it would have been its just beautiful yeah even though we made it custom made by Fletch we put an armrest in the doors which was available on the specials just to make it easier to close the doorsdoors and more comfortable to drive other than that it's pretty well stocked and has comfy seats and we put seat belts on it for safety but other than that it's pretty well stocked yeah before I let you go engine wise mechanically eh what have you done up front? pistons because that's all you can buy piston rings and pistons that size pretty well stock obviously we've installed a power amp because we towed a caravan and needed to stop and the other thing that works a f The new thing from tough people is that we put a 12 volt system on it just because we tow a caravan and that has a 12 volt supply so what do you want to watch at night too yeah exactly and it's amazing how the thing will start first and it's just a lot focus more sensible when you drive an old vehicle like this and with so many vehicles we can cut and put that battery in all of our vehicles so he's pretty good in that regards yeah yeah good john good for you and your lovely wife chris will show up for the final

You're almost just meant to get this car or maybe that was the case, but I was certainly very pleased to get it after remembering the cars. in its as-new state then boug ht it 20 21 years ago what were you driving at the time you had an fj? I was about 18 years old driving an fj and was very envious of the local doctor and their new prime minister huh wish now you still had the fj i can certainly imagine though the fj in its 50s styling with the higher roof line , the hood line higher the huh came up it was lower to the ground it had a sleeker look it must have been an amazing transition period back then for the young man to see that I remember going when the ehs carried the premiere and go to the local holden dealership and open the door and smell the leather and see the carpet on the floor and wonder how cars can get more luxurious this just left the world after vinyl seats and rubber floor mats from a fj, those are great memories, rex, aren't those great memories here?
It only goes deep d doesn't it? Yeah, yeah, okay, now how long you've had the car, how long have you had it? 21 years old, okay, 21 years old at that time, what have you had to do with him? original hydramatic transmission alot of them changed them to trimatix but i definitely wanted to keep it original so i had the hydramatic rebuilt about seven or eight years ago and had a complete engine rebuild at 128k original miles when i bought it and it was starting to Puffing a bit so I had a complete engine rebuild about three years ago so it's back to original spec. fletch, yes this is nice, isn't it to go out and enjoy this while we can?
Okay, I'll finish it there before we, uh, start lashing us with the rain. Rex has been. It's been an absolute pleasure, rex. thank you fletch thank you so much buddy what a special part of this whole event ten selected cars are about to do a parade lap here at the turn one of these cars is warren hi buddy hi buddy how are you? uh, that's fantastic. do it fantastic we just came down from turn 17 here the cars are pulling up huh the weather here wow it's been a fantastic day considering the weather has been pretty bad in and out the chamois are outside they are getting the cars ready huh i have a choice with you here warren with this hk four door car its just an amazing looking car whats the story with this so i came across this car about 18 months ago i have been looking for something to cruise with my family and i called in a client of mine i am a builder and he was sitting in his shed and the rest is history we made a little deal and you know the history of the car is quite interesting in itself it doesn't seem like it had a hard life Warren No I think it's only had four owners and maybe in the fourth, uh, it's an Albury car, so it's a fisherman's sleeper car that was delivered by a Preston Motors dealer in Albury and, um, I think from what I understand where it got a year of use and then sat in a driveway for 26 years.
These are the fines, aren't they? But how beautiful is this car. a grandpa's car you know we uh put the bowler on it we'll uh you know a nice sunny night in Adelaide and we'll go down the esplanade for a cruise yeah fantastic great times on it Warren I will leave you. Get back to it mate enjoy your runway lab fantastic thanks fletch a lovely original 1950 fx holden hi kim hi fletch how are you doing great mate thanks how does it feel to have something as original as this yes its uh between me and my brother and gary it has been Mentally beneficial to both of us uh and it's been good for 30 years and I really enjoyed today and it's good to see your uh your little brother with you here today he's my big brother uh yes it's been he's the one who took her from Adelaide had the challenge while i was up in the caravan park but he survived and the car survived and we enjoyed the track experience huh challenging conditions with a wet track but it was ok it's been a great day love this car complete with its 1950 cheese cutter tires in all their exuberance either waterfall grill and a restoration done a while ago kim yeah before we bought it we think probably before 1990 we bought it locally here but we think it comes from the west coast of south australia and on the air peninsula and uh it's done then and just uh we upgraded the mechanics upgraded the oil leaks and stuff so it can be fixed it's not surprising when we hear stories from many decades ago when these cars weren't that old and the conditions here in regional australia with corrugated roads and lots of dirt roads and cars like this got to the top of cape york and back yeah we think they are fragile , but they used to do this regularly and the reason we got this car was because our dad used to have these cars when he started his taxi business and yes they certainly took some punishment from all sorts of drivers and survived incredibly well kim ha It's been nice having a chat with you and as I said before, it's good to see your brother here too, uh, your little brother, and it's great to see this example here, leading the way in the return of the parade I mean, it doesn't get much cooler than that. to do this I couldn't pass it up because because it was just a great family memory for all of us and certainly thanks for showing interest and I've enjoyed your shows over the years and I hope to continue to enjoy them too thank you kim and I think it's a great too big thanks to general motors australia for playing a big part in this over this weekend here and even marty here uh in the grounds here at the bend uh it's been a fantastic day and i'm glad you're uh you've been a part of that, yeah, it's been really good and uh, I want to thank everyone, it was really good, okay, thank you, kim, thank you, mitch, good to see you. in the last form but this episode ended in the first form the last tribute to raw holden i hope you enjoyed it and the bend motorsport park here in south australia was the perfect place no matter where you are watching from classic rest until next week please drive and drive carefully.
