The Brutal Murder Of The Chohan Family | Real Stories True Crime Documentary

Mar 27, 2024
months of testing, nearly 4,500 different exhibits were presented, from financial transactions to gas receipts. But it was the telephone follow-up evidence that provided the basis for the entire case. - We put ourselves in a position where we knew exactly what had happened and could give a very clear indication for the trial. The enormity of the

crime

and who had committed it. (somber music) - Initially, the police had established Regan and Chohan's movements by tracking their cell phones. Once they gained access to Horncy and Reece's phones, they had compelling evidence of a kidnapping. - Our telephone intelligence had suggested that Mr Chohan had been with Mr Regan, Horncy and Reece, the phones then traveled to Wilton in Salisbury, specifically 3, Forge Close, which was Ken Reagan's home address. -During the critical period, when Mr Chohan was initially missing, there was never a time when one of those phones was not in that area, which led us to believe that he was being watched at 3 Forge Close. (tape moving) (somber music) - All the men at the scene could now be located, but detectives still needed more clues about what

ly happened at 3 Forge Close.

In the run-up to the trial, they unexpectedly received vital new evidence from one of the suspect's relatives. - Mr Horncy's son approached the police and showed us a Lexmark color printer, and also this gray suitcase, which contained several pieces of A4 paper with Mr Chohan's signature. - The printer and documents in Horncy's suitcase explained how Regan had managed to convince CIBA staff that Anil Chohan had sold the company and left the country. (suspense music) Police argued that Anil Chohan was held at 3 Forge Close, so Regan was able to force him to sign the documents under duress. - What are you playing?

What are you doing? Just sign it. (somber music) (shuffled papers) - The suitcase contained 10 blank sheets of paper with Chohan's signature. Spare parts, which Regan could have used to produce other fakes if necessary. (somber music) - Regan's initial plan was to get rid of Anil Chohan. I think once he went down that path, he was left in a position where he had to

the entire

family

, because he knew that if he hadn't done it, Nancy would have raised the alarm. We were able to see clearly from the telephone information that while Mr Reece remained in Salisbury, Regan and Horncy traveled to London, to Sutton Road, Hounslow, where they spent several hours.

I can only guess, but it is possible that this was when the

family

met their death at that address. I don't know to date. What I can say is that Reagan and Horncy were in the area. And I can say that the family disappeared that day. (Door slams) For Mr. Regan, these

murder

s were something he had to do to get what he wanted. And that meant almost as little to him as changing his shirt. (somber music) - Police were unable to establish precisely where or when the family was murdered, but were convinced that Anil Chohan had been murdered in Regan's bungalow.

The problem was proving it. - For many days we carried out a complete forensic examination of the premises. Nothing significant was found there. The reason for this was that the room had been recently decorated. And certainly the furniture in that room was removed. And Mr. Regan had immediately replaced it with new furniture. -The fact that the place had been redecorated, he had removed the carpet. The couch had been removed, which

ly clearly indicated that someone was trying to hide evidence and clean up the

scene. But despite the suspicious activity at the house, it was not proof that Regan had murdered Chohan.
It was just extraordinary evidence that will convince the jury beyond a reasonable doubt. A clue that initially went unnoticed by scientists and that remained stored for almost eight months. A clue left by Anil Chohan himself. - We have two exhibits here. One is Mr Chohan's right sock, which was removed at the post-mortem in Dorset. (somber music) Most of the clothing was immediately sent to the Forensic Science Service for examination. But the socks usually have very little evidentiary value, but to be complete, we decided to send the remaining garments to the scientist who had requested them. When the scientists unwrapped the sock and examined it, they found a folded piece of paper inside.
As you can see, it is in a very delicate state, it has been dried, but has obviously been in seawater. I think the way it has been folded so many times has protected it. And it is a letter from Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society, and it is addressed to Mr Regan of 3 Forge Close. And it is dated February 12, 2003, which clearly means that the day came when we believe Mr Chohan was held captive in Forge Close. (somber music) (door closing) (upbeat, suspenseful music) (urine dripping) (suspenseful music) (toilet flushing) (suspenseful music) You can only imagine how scary that would be Mr.
Chohan made sense to hide this on his person and certainly to put it in stock. He must have realized that he was facing imminent death. - Of course, it is overwhelming evidence of the message that Mr. Chohan was trying to send from beyond the grave to whoever had murdered him. - After a nine-month trial, the jury reached a unanimous verdict. Peter Reece was sentenced to 23 years for the murder of Anil Chohan. Horncy and Regan each received five consecutive life sentences for murdering the Chohan family. They will never get out of prison. The remains of Charanjit Kaur, Anil Chohan's mother-in-law, were finally found off the coast of White Island.
But the bodies of the two babies, Devinder, 18 months, and Ravinder, eight weeks, have never been found. - I think the murder of any child is extremely tragic. And I think as a police officer, after you've investigated these types of crimes, you can usually see the reason why that happened. Someone snapped, someone was depressed, someone was mentally ill, and there are usually a variety of motivations for a child to be murdered. Under these circumstances, the motivation was purely personal gain and greed. And to me, that seemed particularly horrible. - I still have nightmares about how the killers could have killed Nancy or who was killed first.
Nancy was murdered in front of my mom? Or my mom murdered in front of Nancy? Or the children murdered in front of Mom and Nancy? And it's very difficult, you know? And I don't think I'll ever be able to accept it. (somber music) - Onkar returned to New Zealand. He would never meet his sister's children. The only time he saw them all together was in a family video he found in his empty house. -When I found Nancy's video, it was filmed just two days before her disappearance. - Hello! (Nancy cooing) - And I could see in the video the family celebrating life and the children playing in the house. - Joy in a cup. - The eldest son took his first steps in the video.
And my mom was very happy in the video. (Charanjit laughs) When I watched the video, I felt very happy, you know, because I never actually saw Anil and Nancy living together. - Do it well, gardener. Very pretty. - But through that video, I learned that Nancy was very happy with Anil and she was, you know, very lucky to have a tie like Anil had had. Every time I close my eyes I can see Nancy smiling as if nothing had happened, she is still there. And she's waiting for her to go. (somber music) (suspense music)
