Over the past few years people have been asking me: What's up with the

black

ghost

challenge? Have you ever heard of a black

ghost

? And I kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to say anything derogatory or negative. It seemed fine, but I noticed this black ghost Challenger. This was three years ago. I was in Carlisle and the car was on display and I had never heard of it, and if the car really had any kind of provenance. I would have heard about it. You know I'll get to that too so I saw this car on display it's a Survivor 70 Hemi Challenger with roaches and what caught my eye was it has a Green Top Alligator and I'm down for the Gator grain so I walked up and I looked at the car that's Rochi and I looked at the sign and it says do you know the black ghost the legendary Challenger street racing car okay so I'm looking at the car and I think this is not a street racing car it's well this is not a detroit street race car this is a completely original 1970 hemi challenger rtse race car so when i looked at the car i saw it says it has 45,000 miles on it and i'm like oh i know how it looks See a 45,000 mile car.

More Interesting Facts About,

the black ghost the greatest scam in collector car history...

This one is 145,000. This thing was driven hard and stored wet because it was just the car that had the patina of, you know. 145,000 mile car, but that's always speculation, let's call it 45,000. Okay, as I work on the car I get a good look at it, you know, yeah, it's definitely all original, the battery is still under the hood, it has a sway bar. under the front it has power steering, it has options maxed out, like you can click the box, it was anything you want, this car had it, which is impressive on its own, a race car, so while I look at the car The owner comes to see Gregory Qualls, so now Greg seemed like a nice guy and he doesn't know me from a hole in the wall and I was just looking at the car and he said, "You know," and he said, get in a conversation and we're talking back and forth and he tells me it was his dad's car and it was a legend in Detroit called the black ghost and then his dad used to sneak this out every once in a while on Woodward Avenue. and and I did a street race and then I disappeared and people called him the ghost because he would just disappear and at this point I'm talking to this guy and I'm biting my tongue because you know what everyone and his dad had been through. and his father gave him a car.
the black ghost the greatest scam in collector car history
I understood the whole story from him, but I'm biting my tongue now because I happen to be familiar with the street racing scene in Detroit from that era. I wasn't there, but it's okay. uh, I don't have the heart to tell this kid, hey, you know, I don't know, I don't know what story your old man told or what you heard or anything like that, but this is like a 14-second car, I mean. on a good day, this is a 14-second car, it's very heavy, you know, Dodge Challenger, there's a 4,000-pound car with a completely original engine, completely stocked, and there's no way this thing, every quote, to hold firm on Woodward Avenue. or any street racing at that time, okay, so let's start with the origin of this and the purchase of the car and the original owner of the car, Gregory's father, Godfrey Qualls, who, by all accounts and everything I can determine, he was an extraordinary human being that he served. in his country he was a paratrooper got the Purple Heart he became a Green Beret in between he served his community he was a Detroit motorcycle police officer 27 years on the job he was obviously a hard worker a good person as you know like literally, I know it again , this is only what I can determine.

You know, I can't speak for the guy's actual character, but it seems like he was a completely honorable guy in every way and seemed to be a good father and grandfather, so this in no way belittles Officer Qualls' name or reputation, What happened next, so he had a couple of bouts of cancer in 2015, he knew his time was up and he passed the title of the car on to Gregory, his son. I never told Greg, oddly enough, that the car had a street racing

history

in Detroit that was the black ghost, just no, this is my car, I mean, and it meant a lot to me and I want you to have it now. , that's it, that was it.
It was the sum total, so Mr. Qualls never claimed to be this outlaw, underground street racer, okay, he was just a guy who bought this car, he wanted the best of the best and he got the best of the best, he checked off every box y and The car he got is really amazing in its own right, it's a challenge Hemi rtse 70 triple black or four speed, I mean, it hits everything you know, rings all the bells, but never anything about those cars in the history of the trainer street racing. It only happened after people would tell Gregory about his father's exploits on Woodward Avenue and the Detroit area.
Now this thing was a legendary street racer, so now what we have here is we have a completely bone-in 14 seconds on a good day 70 Hemi Challenger. The owner was supposed to be this mysterious, legendary street racer from Detroit. Well, so there were many, many fast cars, many, many well-known cars that raced in Detroit at that time and supposedly the black ghost was in action between 1970 and 1975. Okay, so let's look at two cars that capped the black ghost's career, so the Silver Bullet, the Silver Bullet in 1970 was the car, it was a backdoor Chrysler engineering effort project, okay, the same thing they were developing for direct connection and the Pro Stock program of the day and everything else, the whole technology went to the silver bullet and the silver bullet was on the streets the silver bullet was a legit 10 second tram silent through the mufflers 10 second tram in 1970, I was hauling bananas properly and I had the privilege of examine the Silver Bullet.
This was in the 1980s, when he was editor of Mopar Action magazine. I had the privilege of examining the Silver Bullet as it was last raced, so it was the last time of it. The race was sometime in the mid to early 1970s 72 73 something like that and then the car was taken out of service and it was stuck in a garage and I actually had to get in that car and look at every little nook and cranny. Go back during that time period so it's a car I'm familiar with 1970-71 so now let's go to the other end of the black ghosts race (1975) and the car to beat in that time period in Detroit it was the Gap. and Roush built the sudden death Mustang, yes Gap and Roush are right, Pro Stock People, they built this car called sudden death and it owned the streets for a period of time around 1875. it was a legit single digit car , was a professional stock car, this is what they raced in Detroit during that time period between 1970 and 1875.
Now there are countless other cars that would fit this, but I'm just using those two examples to bookmark the race for the supposed race of the black. ghost, so make a monster short, it's a great story, it's a great story and it takes on a life of its own and it has people who are helping to perpetrate the story, you know, Haggerty is all over this now, okay, they're promoting . the black ghost the black ghost the black ghost I'm making all these little short films and documentaries and stuff the black ghost what a great story but the car itself contradicts the story the evidence you don't need any evidence that this The blood is made up apart from the fact that just look at the car, it's a stock car, it doesn't even have headers, it has the battery still under the hood, like nothing was ever done to this car to do it. faster than I would have been in the 14-second range if I had ever run on Woodward Avenue or that area in general.
Yeah, I mean, I'm sure it did all the muscle cars of the era, but if it elevated them, it did. beat anything, it was going to be like a 396 Chevelle with a Powerglide, yeah okay, the other black ghost is going to run and hide from this thing, it's not the stuff Legends are made of, but it's the stuff of the one where the big stories are made and the big story is not over yet because this scam has only just begun, in fact, the whole auction, the meccum thing, I think it's a scam too, so I'll get to that in just a minute, So, like I said, I looked. about the car I talked to, I talked to the guy Greg and I didn't have the heart to tell him no, this just isn't possible, okay, you know, it's a great story you have here, but that's all, it's a story . this car never had anything no one ever feared it at any point this was your dad's car it was just pride and joy he drove it to and from work and wherever he drove it and I could see where he would love this car and and and and you should love it too , You know?
But this makeup story, man, is a little over the top, so it sells for a million dollars. I have a lot of expectation, even Dodge, even Dodge, enter the ACT, they make a black. Ghost edition of The Challenger, just the new Hellcat, a black ghost edition of this thing, ends up on the national historic register for cars like this, it's like next level crazy and while it's happening like me. I'm not really paying attention to it because I got out of the fish so far. I have other things to do. I don't really care what's going on with this car, but I know it's all a scam and it finally sells for a million dollars the 975 was the hammer price I think the total was one million one million seventy two thousand dollars no You quote me it's a million dollars for my helicopter it's a million dollars and I think it's ridiculous, it's like what kind of idiot would spend this amount of money without looking at the car and putting two and two together and saying this is it? a 14 second car, this is a 14 second car, the accompanying story is obviously nonsense, so then?
If you do a little research, just dig a little below the surface, I think it's really interesting, okay, because forget about the car and this and what it is and let's talk about the real story and let's talk about who's telling it. the story Gregory Qualls, Godfrey's son, so Greg and this has never been mentioned or talked about or anything like that. Greg is actually a cinematographer where he is, he does, he's a filmmaker, he's a filmmaker, okay and just a little bit of research, a little bit, literally, okay. like a 30 second Google search brings up the fact that he owns a company called Full view Productions, visual content creators, okay and it's a very nice website, very nice website, very high end and Here's a mission statement about us so you know I'm not making this up.
I'll read it to you about us. Our goal is to be mission-driven storytellers who pioneer authentic, cutting-edge visual content with the goal of evoking an emotional response from a diverse collective of creatives. Visionaries. and artists ready to capture the most compelling stories that focus on impact, wait a minute, you're serious, you have this incredible story about a decorated war hero who buys this car and then sneaks out at night and owns the Detroit Street Racing. scene and then he mysteriously disappears like the black ghost and then he leaves the car to his son on his deathbed and then the car becomes world famous and sells for a million dollars in this giant auction, you mean a story like that one or something like that. the type of stories you make the type of films you make well is the type of story that becomes a feature film a full length film and I've even seen the trailer there's a trailer look it up on YouTube okay there's a trailer for the black ghost movie I think it's MGM Studios and it's the story of Godfrey Qualls and his military career and his police career and his family life and all that other stuff and then they get in the car and what. better way to end that movie, what better Cinderella ending for a movie like that that after his death he's remembered and as a secret, underground street racer and his car sells for a million dollars at this auction, you know you couldn't do this.
I couldn't make this stuff up. I'm not creative enough to make things up like this. It actually happened, don't take my word for any of this. If everything else I say is just, I'm just making this up. top right, just look at the car, it's off, it's an original 1970 Hemi Challenger, it's a 14 second car, it didn't have any street races anywhere on Earth in the decade1970s and early 1970s, just that fact, but now, like I said, you start to look at the background, you know, creative filmmaker, compelling stories, you got it. I mean, that's it and I personally think my opinion was that the whole thing with Mechem is maybe okay, no, I'm not even going to say it.
I win. I'm not saying that because that's wrong. I have doubts about the actual credibility of the auction. of the bidders who bid on this car um, I don't think they were too idiots with more money than common sense bidding on this, I think in this world famous auction for top line money and everyone on the line, I guess Mecca and Haggerty's and everyone and Dodge, all the people who know this car, all plated to the max. You know in my opinion this is the biggest scam in

collector

car history and it hasn't even started yet.
Wait until the movie comes out. I wish I could use things like this. I can not do it. He would be a multimillionaire. How do you say tomorrow?
