The 2020 Genesis G90 5.0L is An Old School Luxury Sedan with a Big V8

May 30, 2021
Nowadays it seems like every time I read the automotive news you keep reading articles about how

sedan

s are dying because everyone is buying a crossover like that one behind me, fortunately there are some manufacturers that are still investing heavily in

sedan

s and This Week I'm testing a sedan that received a complete update for the

2020

model year. In fact, the update is so extensive that every body panel except the doors and roof has been changed; It is also one of the few large sedans with rear-wheel drive. which is still available with one of the only naturally aspirated v8s in the segment, the vehicle I'm talking about is the

2020

Genesis G 90, the flagship of the Genesis brand and it could well be one of the last of its kind that it was about.

Three years ago, when Hyundai finally decided to create its own

luxury

division, Genesis, back in 2017, in fact, it was testing the first Genesis model at that time, the G 90, which if you don't remember was the replacement for the Hyundai Equus, which was their first attempt at creating a Korean full-size flagship

luxury

sedan, although the G 9t or the Equus didn't really have much of a reputation here in America, in Korea, these are the cars that were as big executive or rich as the People traveled with a driver and I was really impressed with the G 90, of course it had a couple of things that I didn't like very much.

More Interesting Facts About,

the 2020 genesis g90 5 0l is an old school luxury sedan with a big v8...

If you haven't seen that video, click the link in the description below so you can update it. Your memory of how that car drove and what it looked like when I first saw this G 90, the facelifted model, is so radically different, in fact, every part of the body, every panel of this car, except the roof and the doors, it has been completely redesigned for 2020. So, being a flagship model, one of the key elements of a flagship is the exterior design and the G 90, how does it have some problems there when it first came out in 2017? I criticized the car for being too bland, too safe, as good looking as possible.

Look, the 2020 model seems to rectify all that because it has the brand's new styling direction. Here you have the big Crash 2 grille at the front and these quad beam full LED headlights which definitely give this car a completely different look compared to the previously updated model. The grille on this car is especially polarizing, it will basically be something that a lot of people will talk about because it has a lot of presence at first. I didn't really like the look of the grill when I saw this at the Auto Show, but here in person or at least in the real world, I think it gives the car a very distinctive look when I think Genesis could have done better by integrating the sensor here for radar cruise control, that technology of course is standard on all vehicles.

G 90, but I think it looks a little cheap with this kind of black plastic or clear plexiglass over the center of the grill. I love this car's quad-beam LED headlights, which come standard if you remember the preview. new model, they didn't actually have LEDs as standard, you had xenon as standard, while the v8 models followed comfortably and by the way, this is the v8 model, you can basically choose between a six or eight cylinder. option

genesis

keeps it pretty simple with the option packages on this car, which is not something the Europeans or Japanese do, so those of you looking for some simplicity might want to take a look at one of these now that The wheels are also very controversial, especially when I first saw this car.
The vehicle's spokes actually mimic what you see on the actual grill. It's kind of a throwback to the '90s or '80s. Let me know in the comments below if you liked the look. Of this, the only thing I like is the integrated turn signal. Missing here now are the dual LED lights found on models like the upcoming GB 80 and g 80, so remember this is just an upgrade to an existing car, so we won't get the fact that the styling was designed with this in mind. car in mind as you do with these new upcoming models.
This is still a really big sedan, it's the flagship of the Genesis line, so at 205 inches long it's in the same spec or something like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or a Lexus LS. I will say that the silhouette is still a little bland, but I think Genesis has really tried hard to make this more distinctive, it certainly has. The rear of the vehicle also has a completely different look. Remember that all body panels except the roof and doors have been changed. These dual LED taillights mimic the quad-beam design you get for the headlights and also the Genesis.
It's like spelling his name here instead of putting his winged emblem there, which I think was actually a really good move. The exhaust tips even have the same kind of look as the grille, which I think is a little fancy. I really am not. I'm the biggest fan of that, but as you can see here, you can tell this is a 5-liter V8 by the badge. It lacks the all-wheel drive of the company's H truck, so this is actually a rear-drive model, which isn't as accurate. You don't even have to open the trunk here, you can see that the G 90 has a fairly comparable trunk for everything in this segment.
It's actually quite big when you first open the trunk. The seats do not fold 60/40, which is quite common in this segment. instead you only have a small step in the trunk and you get about 15.7 cubic feet of space, so obviously the G 90 has a completely new look on its own, it's definitely something that stands out; In fact, I didn't like how it looked at first. at the Motor Show, but here in person it's a pretty eye-catching car that I think really works on the G 9d, now that it's a flagship luxury sedan, it's definitely a dying segment in a dying segment, basically everyone is buying big SUVs luxury, just look at BMW with its massive x7 that just flew out of dealer showrooms, unlike these 7 Series luxury sedans or even Mercedes with the GLS instead of the S-Class sedan, the G 90 is in a very strange position because Genesis currently does not have any SUV in its portfolio.
However, the portfolio is changing very soon, but the good thing about the G 90 is that it is in a unique segment or at least it has a unique part in the segment. because it's one of the few vehicles that offers the option of an aspirated V8 that's naturally aspirated, so eight unboosted or supercharged cylinders that allow you to do things like this, oh, that's a really nice sound, so, what drives this? Genesis offers a choice of two different engines, so let's talk about them in a world full of electrification, Genesis will definitely appeal to some of you traditionalists, especially if you're looking for something like a naturally aspirated v8, something Lexus abandoned ago. about two years into their flagship LS, but as you can see here. and all its beauty.
I'll take off this silly plastic cover here and you can see that it's actually a very nice engine compartment. I did not expect this. There are some modern BMWs that I have shown you where there are plenty of cheap ones. Plastic wiring, as you can see this is a beautiful engine, but this is the company's five-liter naturally aspirated V8, it makes 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, those are actually pretty good numbers , that's what a Ford Mustang used to do. It was developed in 2015, when that engine first came out, this particular one is the top engine, about two and a half thousand dollars more.
Genesis also offers a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 that makes 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. I've actually driven that engine. Back when I drove this car for the first time in 2017 and to be honest I really like the way the v8 sounds in this thing, which will return to the driving scene in a moment, you guys can hear the engine noises now, all g9 T's will. It comes with only an 8-speed automatic transmission, it's a Genesis Hyundai transmission that you can choose between rear-wheel drive or for an additional $2,500, you can get the all-wheel drive system from the accompanying H-truck.
Now the downside to this v8 is it makes the G 90 a little thirstier and a little heavier than some of the competition, this one here is ready to get 16 in the city 24 on the highway, all wheel drive will take you down to 1523 while the v6 will get 1725 so a slightly better premium gas mpg is recommended and this one is also quite heavy weighing just under forty nine hundred pounds so this 5 liter v8 offers zero to zero performance. 60 in the low to mid five second range, it's obviously fast, refined, smooth, isn't it. a fast Mercedes AMG or you know, the BMW M division fast or is it fast, however it offers abundant performance where the g90 shines just like all the other vehicles in the segment, it cruises even in sport mode here, if you drop it , you hit him.
Comfort, this is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever sat in, from the seats to the comfortable ride quality, super quiet interior, and excellent visibility. Genesis actually improved the driver assistance technology in this car this year, where they added pedestrians. Cyclist detection and detection, it has better highway driving assistance where it actually keeps you centered in the lane and with the blind vision cameras and blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert, this is a car that you will enjoy driving everyone the days. You can basically carry this to and from work, get to and from the office, go out to dinner with your spouse, take it on long road trips, it's a card that is so immensely comfortable and quiet that the hassles of the outside world just disappear and It makes you feel like you bought a car that cost a lot more money than you actually paid for.
I think that's the secret of the Genesis overall, they offer a lot, especially when you look at this interior, this interior is immensely comfortable and packed with technology. Although it's not packed with the latest technology, it's not overloaded with technology, but they made changes to this interior for 2020, so let's go over some of those changes, the richness of this interior obviously starts in the front seats and I have to say that Genesis is really it kills it with the exterior styling, what's under the hood, with the handling of the interior, that's really where it starts when you look at a luxury sedan and this interior, although it doesn't look that different from the 2017 model they made.
Some subtle changes here to make this car feel a little better this year. The first thing I want to show you is that you can't be bothered with doors slamming on cars like this, so Genesis includes a soft close door, so yes all doors do it. Soft close, all you have to do is click if you want to slam it shut. It has a very nice solid bunk bed that reminds me that I'm sitting in a much more expensive car than it really is. This interior is known as blue and brown. Genesis actually calls it indigo, which I love.
I love the fact that the exterior is blue and we have a blue interior with this two-tone brown combination. It's like a throwback to A-knees. I love how the blue interiors are. is making a comeback, although in the light it looks a little black, this is a really attractive more traditional cabin, so if you hate those big tablet screens that stick out and look like an afterthought, Genesis has a very well integrated 12 point three. inch screen here which, by the way, now includes Android auto and Apple CarPlay which is standard this year, it wasn't even available in the 2019 model, so Bravo to Genesis for finally giving us what we want, as you can see here, a screen gigantic that takes up the entire orientation here, which is great because a lot of these other manufacturers will cut this screen in half.
We have a screen as big as a hair when you are using the car. Play with the standard Genesis Connect or Genesis head unit. It's really easy here. to use the interface here so you can use it as a touch screen or you can use the control dial here. The only thing I wish was added a little was a full digital screen here, instead it has this really small 7-inch screen, which I think probably looks like one of the more dated parts of this interior, but remember that Genesis has a brand new system they are working on on the GV 80 and g 80.
They also changed the look of the wood grain trim this year as you can see. it has a matte finish, this is real wood, real aluminum, it even smells expensive here, the pre-update model had that shiny wood look that looked really fake and also looked very old

school

, so loving I love the stitching leather that are found everywhere. The interior is actually standard, many manufacturers from Germany or Europe make you pay more for the leather lines; so generous it just gives you a standard, the leather continues on the door panels here, where there is beautiful stitched leather rather than wood. aluminum trim, includingWindow switches have a really nice tactile metallic finish, which makes the car feel really special and expensive.
Now on the door here, you'll notice your usual settings here for your memory seats. There's also another button here called smart. when I press the smart button here, it actually goes into what Genesis calls smart posture care. This is new for 2020. This is a system that will actually read your height, the inseam length of your pants, and your weight, so it asks for that information when you tell it that. The information you basically have is to analyze your actual specific body and the system will adjust the seat however it thinks is most comfortable and best for your posture while you're sitting in the car, that's something I've never seen in the industry before. but let me show you this seat, this is the position that I have the car set up and I think it is most comfortable for me to drive this.
Number two is what the car thinks is most comfortable. Let me show you what the position changes: you lower the seat back, recline it slightly, and push the steering wheel out. Now when I first had the car he told me this is how I should be driving, it was a little strange because I feel like my arms are super stretched out but I like the recline of the seat. It takes me a little time to get used to it again. It will adapt to your height, your waist size and of course. its weight, so that's a really cool thing, the

genesis

is included, it really shows how the company is innovating here, the rest of this cabin is pretty much the standard traditional stuff, very traditional knobs for adjusting volume for control of zone climate and they also added this wireless phone charger down here for the 2020 model year.
I also like the Genesis shifter. Here it is an 8 speed automatic. It is an electronic shift lever. When you put the vehicle in reverse, you can see that there is a really nice 360 camera with very clear graphics. Basically as nice as what you'll find in all the European brands and you can also access that camera any time you want by simply pressing the View down button. All of these buttons are again lined with real metal trim. The drive mode selector here allows this. You can switch between Comfort Sport eco and custom when you have the car in a sporty setting here, the bolsters will actually squeeze and hug you a little more, so if you're attacking your favorite corners you won't budge.
In the seat, you can control all the heated and cooled seats from here and you also controlled the rear sunshade and the heated steering wheel, which actually offers two levels of heating. This center console here opens with a double liner and then with a double hinge. lid, so if anyone has, you know there are, I'll lean in here, it won't really interfere with them and the seats in this car are extremely plush and uncomfortable, they adjust twenty-two different ways, plus they have that clever care of the stance so if you're looking for luxury here this has everything you basically expect without any of the extra tech stuff that can get a little overwhelming as something you'll find and in German it's really the only thing Genesis needs to add is a panoramic sunroof I only have a standard size sunroof here and it would be nice to have full glass through the fact that you can outperform most of its competitors.
I'm really having a bad day and I really wish I could go go to the salon and get a haircut thanks to the coronavirus oh I mean what do you expect me to do in a car that has a back seat that's supposed to be reserved for executives, how can you? see here, one of the advantages of getting the v8 model is the fact that you have a fourteen way adjustable seat on this side and a twelve way power seat on the driver's side in the rear, the rear seat in this car does not It's what I'd say Mercedes-Benz is, it might balk at the territory, but this is pretty good.
Actually, Genesis said you have about 39 inches of legroom here and when you fold down this little control panel here, this car will seat three people, but you might as well have two. You've got all these controls back here, so I've got heated and ventilated seats back here. I can adjust the seat here with these controls. You can see it's the same on the other side of the vehicle. In fact, you could press a button here that will control the front seat and move it back into position. Just do that on this side because remember there's a driver there where I can fold the front seat out of the way or bring it back.
This is a more upright position, so there's basically a rest button and a go button. Back to the normal configuration, this back seat is quite unexpected. I didn't expect Genesis to give us a back seat this luxurious. I mean, even the materials here. I love the fact that I have this blue and brown interior. I really love the color combination here. I also love all the Alcantara suede, the leather stitching here on the actual handle, everything here feels really rich, supple and really expensive. Really unexpected for what you get in a Genesis product. It makes me forget that Hyundai is their parent company now the latest 5 liter also comes with these two screens, they are 10 and a quarter inch screens and they basically mimic what you see on the front head unit of this car, you can control it through this little one remote control here where you can basically tell it which side you want to go or you can control both sides, you can see the GPS, you can adjust the radio.
I suspect Apple Carplay will also return here if you have it connected to the front. From the vehicle opening this up here, you can see there are two 12 volt power outlets and then here is a USB and another power outlet and a little bit of light, unlike some of its German competitors if you're looking for something like that. a glass of champagne here or a refrigerator, sorry it's not available, but remember this car is significantly less expensive now, a couple more things you expect here, the sun visors, there are power retractable sun visors on both sides and there's also one which will control the rear. umbrella behind me, which is also a really nice feature.
Basically, you can turn this into your own little sanctuary where you can block out the sun or get the paparazzi out. The metal speaker covers you see here on the doors are part of the The Lexicon sound system, which has almost a thousand watts of power, doesn't sound as good as some of the better sound systems from Bowers and Wilkins and Bang & Olufsen, but I'll give the judges credit because only Rolls-Royce uses Lexicon as a brand supplier for sound systems and it sounds pretty good, so the biggest thing they added was Apple Carplay and Android Auto, which is what I complained about in my review of this car three years ago and they also made a touch screen on it, it's a bit It's out of my reach to be a really nice church touch screen, but you can use the controls here and I mean, look at that huge screen, it's a screen twelve point three inches and compensates for the fact that the screen here is not complete. digital display I have a head-up display there; overall it's nice, but not too complex, there's not that many ways to tune this, even down to the build specs of this car, you know you can choose between you know, a v6 or a v8, either rear wheel drive or the four wheels, there are seven exterior colors, three interior colors, there are no options, basically, you know, choose the engine you want, it comes with the premium package for the six or the ultimate package for this eight. and it has everything you want, so I love how Genesis keeps it simple, especially in a world where all the Germans and even the Japanese make it incredibly complex.
So what's up with that v8 power? Yes, this car looks like a boring luxury barge on the outside, but it's rear-wheel drive at least this one here is rear-wheel drive put my foot here all that sound it makes is so satisfying it makes you feel like you're the king of the road since the silky smoothness of that v8 to the choppy shifts of the 8-speed automatic transmission to that cushioned ride in Cushi even though it's sporty now, it's still a very comfortable ride. Oh, I have so much effortless power. I drove this car three years ago with the 3.3 liter v6 which is actually only About as fast as the v8 but I will choose the v8 because of the noise it makes now.
I will say that the noise in sport mode is being amplified a bit. It's not the true sound of the v8, which sounds good on the outside, but you can hear it. These shoes are amplifying the sound of the V8, which is so smooth, so buttery, so rich that it reminds me of the old 4.6-liter V8 in the Lexus LS because, as you know, you can't get that V8 anymore. the LS Lexus still makes a 5-liter engine, a satisfying 5-liter v8 in the GSF, unfortunately that will be discontinued, which would make the G 90, if Genesis continues to offer it, the only full-size luxury sedan to offer a n/ Now, with a naturally aspirated v8, of course, I could moan and complain that these cars are pretty boring when you start encountering some twisty roads, but that's not necessarily the mission of these big sedans.
I mean, I'm sure Mercedes has the AMG versions of the s-class there is like an Alpina b7 version of the 7 Series Hi, they make an s8 version which I would say is probably one of the sportier options, but no one buys these for that are really sporty, you know, get an m5 or an e63 if I want something like that it's made for touring but this car will hold its own on a back road the steering is surprisingly heavy in its feel it offers good feedback through the front tires the Visibility is easy the seats really keep you in place because they adjust 22 different ways and I can't help but feel like a rock star in this, who cares about the fact that it's not a BMW, a Mercedes or an Audi, because Genesis is an upstart luxury brand and the g90 is very much the beginning of This don't forget we have a completely redesigned g80, we have that GV 80 SUV and then in the upcoming GB 70 there are rumors about a GB 9b, for what an SUV based on this car in Genesis and you don't build it, you are really missing an opportunity because this is truly an amazing product and even though it is just an updated model, I find that I like this 2020 G 90 much more than in 2017, maybe it's because of the The fact that this segment is just a dying segment and this is offered at a price that undercuts Lexus by $15,000, undercuts the Germans by up to $40,000, but it's not really lost much in terms of luxury nor does it feel like starting over. out there for just a second I'm impressed I'm super impressed even if you make it it's not great but it's a v8 you have to pay to play sorry I won't do any burnout that sad maybe I could try it yeah well let me do silly burns so What a world full of electrification and America's love of crossovers.
It seems a little strange to me to review a large and expensive luxury sedan with rear wheel drive and a V8 engine, but I have to say that I really love cars as this makes this car especially unique and when you take into account all the changes that Genesis made this year to finally address the bland look it had with the pre-update model, you can't help but see how well the Genesis is doing right now. They may be a little late to the party in terms of crossovers coming later this year. We will add that GBA T, a new G T sedan is also coming, the new G 90 is a sample of where Genesis will be. for years to come and it really excites me because this car is a great value compared to many of its competitors.
Its starting price is around $72,000 for the rear-wheel drive V6 model. Beat something like a Lexus LS by $10,000 the Germans will easily cost thirty to forty thousand dollars more the v8 will cost about thirty five hundred dollars more and if you want all wheel drive it will cost about twenty five thousand dollars more you can basically choose from seven colors on the outside and three colors on the inside, so this is a simplified luxury. I think what it's going to do is convey Lee well for people who are feeling overwhelmed and want something that's a little bit nice and where they don't care too much about the prestigious badge, so this one of them is the v8 model, the stickers final finishing projects for around seventy-six thousand dollars.
Basically, this car could cost around seventy-nine thousand dollars, which is 15 thousand dollars less expensive than the last Lexus LS I owned and easily forty thousand dollars less. more expensive than a top eight series seven or Sadie's Benz S Class, so once you get past the Genesis badge, which honestly this brand is gaining a lot of momentum, there are a lot of people who think that Genesis will really start to steal some sales from not only the Japanese brands but the German ones make this car a really attractive proposition and if you are looking for a sedanReal luxury, a sedan, not a crossover, this is one of the gems in the segment, it really is the underdog so I highly recommend you put one at the top of your list, but all in.
