The 182 might be the PERFECT airplane for THIS reason

Jun 07, 2021
I have had my Cessna 182 for five years and I love it. It has many advantages worth talking about that we will cover in

this

video, but by far the best part about owning a cessna 182 is its x factor. It has

this

super power, so to speak, that very few if any other

airplane

s possess and it's my favorite part about owning and flying this particular

airplane

, so stick around, so at the end I'll tell you what the first thing I love is. the 182 is its payload really how much can you carry between fuel people luggage things in general how much the plane has to work and my 182 in particular has just over 1100 pounds of payload, which is quite a lot, I mean it's not 206 or some of those bigger airplanes, but for a four-seat airplane it can carry a lot and it has earned a very good reputation for this, so to put it in context, if I have full fuel, I'll cover it, I can burn fuel here in per minute, but that's a lot of fuel, it's 75 gallons.

I can still carry about 660 pounds of gear and stuff, but you very rarely need the 75 gallons of fuel unless you're really planning on a long stretch or need fuel because where? you're not going to have something in the field or something, but more commonly I'm flying with, you know, half tanks or something so when I only have half the fuel on board I can carry almost 900 pounds of stuff, which makes it a real In a four person plane you can really carry four people and fuel with a little luggage, so you know a 172 is not really a four person plane, but a 182 in all respects is definitely a four person plane. four seats, so the payload simply It has been one of the biggest advantages of having a 182 because it has a lot of versatility because you can carry a lot of things.

More Interesting Facts About,

the 182 might be the perfect airplane for this reason...

Next is fuel efficiency. My 182 will burn between 11 and 13 gallons per hour depending on how high you go. I'm very, very happy because you know that if you fly something bigger and faster or something with a turbocharger, it's usually going to consume a lot more fuel than that, on the other hand, yes, you can find airplanes that do six gallons an hour and go just as good. . fast or faster than the 182, but they generally won't have the payload to go with the 182, so all of these things are definitely a trade-off, but one thing to note about my 182 is that since I have 75 gallons of fuel on board. 11 to 13 gallons per hour is a lot of gas.
the 182 might be the perfect airplane for this reason
I mean, I usually have to stop and make a pit stop well before the plane, so you know you're not burning as much fuel compared to how much is on board, so I've never run into any kind of fuel or of range with the 182, it doesn't burn as much gas and it has a lot of gas to begin with, so the fuel efficiency and range here is a really impressive benefit of the 182. The fuel efficiency also gets us into range and I've always Been very, very happy with the range of my 182. As I mentioned, I usually have to pull over and make a pit stop before the plane practically talks.
the 182 might be the perfect airplane for this reason
I have about five, sometimes over six hours of fuel on board if I have 75 gallons and about 13 per hour, which keep in mind we can do better than 13 per hour if we go a little higher and tilt it. but that's about five hours or about 650 miles in 130 knots of rain, so you know I can go from Texas to Idaho and quite comfortably in two stops, so you know really 182, the shortest way I describe it. people, the 182 is amazing, it will take you anywhere in the country you'd like to go if you can sit there long enough and it's very, very comfortable to do so, so I've always been very happy with the range of the 182.
Next up is short field performance, the 182 has amazing short field features, so if you're looking to go out in the field and do some unpaved, explore some unpaved runways and stuff like that, the 182 is an amazing platform for that, You won't necessarily be. landing on gravel bars like the little ones, like the super puppies, and stuff, but it's a really respectable platform, so if you're flying to Arkansas or Idaho and some other places, you're going to find a lot of 182s because they're just incredible. airplanes for that environment, but one of the things that really makes them incredible and that we've already covered is the range and the payload, you know, and the fuel consumption to get out, because you have enough to carry a load pretty far. into the field and I still have enough fuel on board and payload remaining as well to return if necessary, so it's just an amazing and versatile platform, especially in short field scenarios, next is speed, now the 182 is not a speed demon, but If you're used to going out with 172 or other smaller trainers, it's definitely an uptick.
You know the newer 182s go about 140 knots and mine cruises at 130, but if you're used to going 110 knots, you're going to love the extra 20 30 knots you'll get from the 182. That's not as fast as a bonanza or a cirrus or something like that, but you get a small increase in speed. I have noticed that this is not the case. Really enough to make a big difference, unless you're going very long distances, so the times I've been doing some exploratory flights with other 172s, I'll go to Arkansas with some of my friends who will rent 172s. and I'm not much faster than them if we go 50 miles and they take off first and then I take off after them, we will arrive practically at the same time, so it won't be a huge amount.
There is a big difference, but hey, speed is speed. I also really appreciate the ifr stability. So how stable is the airplane when you're flying in instrument conditions and you're shooting an approach and you can't see outside the airplane? I've found the 1a2 to be very, very easy to fly, it's very forgiving, you know, if you trim the airplane, it loves to keep the same speed, so you can tune it very well for an approach and it's very, very forgiving, etc. . In ifr I feel very, very comfortable because of how stable the plane is. One more thing I love about the 182 is how comfortable it is.
I found the cabin to be very, very spacious and it actually has a boxy feel to it, whereas sometimes on low wing aircraft they can have a little more curvature in the cabin and the 182 doesn't have that because you know the sides of the cockpit they just go up and then meet the wings at the top and for that

reason

you don't have to curl over yourself and put your head to the side while you fly it, so I'm a bigger guy, but always I have felt that the 182 is very, very comfortable, particularly in the rear, passengers have plenty of legroom, so whether you are traveling a short distance or in the countryside or across the country, the 182 is an airplane very, very comfortable, as I mentioned at the beginning.
At the beginning of the video, the 182 has superpower that makes it better than any other aircraft. Few, if any, other aircraft possess this superpower. So what is it? Well, if you think about all the advantages that I just saw in the 182, the fact that it has. good payload good fuel efficiency good range good short field performance good speed great stability and lots of comfort the 182 is one of the only airplanes that will do a little bit of everything it has something to show in all those areas I'm not going to do any of them those things better than any other airplane, but it's one of the only ones, if not the only one, that will do a little bit of all those things, so while I was determining which airplane to buy it.
I really came to this and thought that if this 182 was the only airplane I ever owned, it would be the first and last airplane I owned for the next 50 years, will it fulfill my mission well? The answer is yes and I couldn't say it. that over many other airplanes or really any other airplane that's going to do a little bit of everything it's going to take me all over the country it's going to take me to short field scenarios it's going to be comfortable it's going to fly r it's going to do a little bit of everything , so it's just an amazing airplane in every way, so if you look at other airplanes that can do one of these things better than the other, you're probably going to sacrifice that in another area where you can have another airplane that's faster but it probably won't carry as much or you may have one that goes further but may also land short.
You know, it's about trade-offs. These are tradeoffs when owning a plane and the 182 I have found. You have to make the least amount of compromises because it will do a little bit of everything, so I found that the 182 was a

perfect

airplane for me, but that doesn't mean it's the

perfect

airplane for you and therefore to help you. I decide that I will prepare a separate video. I'll link to it in the corner that talks about the six-point mission or the six questions you can ask to identify the perfect airplane for you based on the mission you need it to perform.
I apologize in advance for the audio, it wasn't as high quality as what I have now, but I think the content is really solid and will definitely get you on the right path to deciding which plane is right for you, so yes You're looking for an airplane right now, whether it's a 182 or something else. I'd love for you to leave me a comment below and tell me what you're looking for, but go check out that other video too, since I think. It will help you identify the aircraft that will be ideal for you, so thanks for looking.
I hope you found this helpful on your aeronautical journey, and as always, I'll see you next Monday morning.
