Texas Metal S07E12

May 31, 2024
This is my dad's 1949 Ford. Do you know the trucks here? No. Oh, it's a total surprise, total surprise, it's cool to think that this '49 Ford is a gift from her daughter to dad now, once we get sheet

metal

on this, everything will be tied. it's going to look very clean we're going with aluminum and walnut this is going to make the bed hinge up and down these are the candy colors they're really going to make the truck mirror finish the new Coyote engine and it's going to hit this one truck much more power, it will start fine Matt, oh my god, it's Bill Carlton.
texas metal s07e12
I built my first truck when I was 16 and ever since then my boys and I have been here creating with our hands building the biggest one and the lowest one. custom trucks and cars in the game people don't come here for what they need, they come here for what they want, this is Texas

metal

, well I know you're here to get an update on something but finally all Chrome showed up man, It's about time, yeah, it's definitely a slow process, you can't do it that fast, yeah, you can never rush it, but the plan is on the way and I mean, that's a good thing, so another good thing is that I've been here almost two years.

More Interesting Facts About,

texas metal s07e12...

That's already what I said, I mean man it felt like we just started here and what a wild ride it's been two years, man what's been your favorite build so far? There have been a couple of tankers we did last year that were pretty impressive, you know? that was the first one I did, you know, thrown to the wolves and seeing that big thing as it was come here, you guys put that air suspension on it and really took that truck to the top, but since then there have been so many different builds, You know, I guess sitting right now, I really like that 53 tow truck, you know that thing when it came in, I didn't know how to get them Tetus shots or a new truck, I mean, but then what did the guys do to that bed, that frame.

I've never seen anything like it. You had some easy ones. I haven't had any easy ones. I don't think I ever had them. Speaking of the latest challenge, you know, the big '49 Ford project. I know this is one of those projects where I was a little hesitant to accept it or not when it was in such bad shape, you know, sitting on the trailer, but By taking it to the workshop and destroying everything, get it. Damn getting it back, which is always a little nerve-racking, you don't know what you're going to end up with, yeah man, but it was in pretty decent condition thanks to a new custom chassis build, new suspension, and it incorporated that independent rear suspension.
texas metal s07e12
With that you know first for us that engine with that rear suspension man it's putting that coot in the engine transmission you know it's going to be a good running truck too man you know it's been a long project oh I know Yes, but you. We know we're in the home stretch now building the floor of the bed, you still have to do that, build the footboards. The paint and body on this one is going to be a sweet paint job that should definitely make it stand out man, and then once it's all done. You know, of course, John has to do his thing, paint John's interior with chrome paint.
This might be my favorite build, although it can be beautiful. Trust. I tell you that one of the last things we need are wheels and there will be many others. There's stuff too though, so be prepared, yeah, well, whatever it takes to get this over the finish line, man, whatever parts, and you know, he's not going to make us wait for you again, we've done a lot of metal work for this. truck already, but we still have a few more custom parts left, one of them has a custom running board that will go with the overall look of the truck and Ryan and Dustin are already ready, so we have our running board up to here and Now we have a very good idea of what the route we want to follow will look like.
You know, we had this thing going and it just wasn't enough, so we brought in this little piece and gave it a little flow. We know we need to go to the outside of the fenders like we want now, once we have sheet metal on this, everything will come together, it will look very nice, very clean, but we got this far, now we have to catch the other side to do it. Look exactly like this, make sure everything is perfect and then we can start doing our sheet metal work on Top Road, he's a bad boy.
I need some kind of reference that I can measure on that side and the same on this side so I can make sure these land exactly where they need to be, you don't want one to be even an inch further than this one, just that's good, that's the worst which it normally does when we bend anything we have tube benders. That's all good for us, but when you bend a square tube it likes to twist the top, it always leaves a little kink, like a little pinch, and you have to spend all the time grinding it and then it gets paper thin and just flattens out. turns into a headache, it's a NR, so the best way to do this to put the container we want in this is to cut it into a pie shape, so we're just going to cut some slits here, it won't take too long. a lot and it will give the perfect curvature of the side of the cabin right there, very good, I won't even make a little filler piece for that instead of folding this and rolling it this way and then having to roll it back, that would have been really very difficult . doing it on that piece or sheet metal, go all the way here, you know what I mean, everything will be one piece of sheet metal, so you'll never know this was added, it's just to give it a little bit of character. more flow into the running board and we'll see once we cut all of this off behind here that it will bolt to the fender and this will all be part of the running board here this will be gone, everything that's gone Ryan and I set our running board frames on the 49 now we're going to Go ahead and leave the metal sheets here, we're going to take our sheets here, take them to the brake, break them up, take them to the truck and then trim them to fit our frame perfectly.
For a good reveal, we'll go test it on the truck. I'm sure there will be some minor trimming and polishing and then we'll be ready to start with the sheet metal piece we've made and cut and everything. it fits perfect here everything lines up we have it TCH all the way to the bottom of the bed and now it's time to start nailing it in we're going to nail it in at the inch and a half also there will be a void here once this is all cut out you'll be able to see the daylight through there, so we have to find a way to make all of that look good once we have it intact and everything we can take out, cut off all this excess and put it in.
There and look what you have now. I'm making some filler pieces for the front fenders that will be welded together and then we won't have a gap. Voila, it's going to look great, so now Dustin and I have the The last pieces of the running boards are one step closer to having all the fabulous work done on the truck too, so we'll move on to the next step, which I don't know yet , but the next one, yes, I want it. to show all the custom metal work on the '49-up so we're going to do a bed floor that will activate so we have our inventory for the '49 Ford bed floor now that Bill has everything laid out. he has the idea from him about what we are going to do, now we know how wide each board needs to be to keep it safe and keep everything uniform.
I have a few finger boards set up. I'll make some stop blocks at the top. so everything stays where it needs to be and from that point it's just a matter of feeding it to cutting everything up, we'll get back to the truck and make sure everything works, we're going with aluminum and walnut to get it in form and function just the way we like it around here. Aluminum is a great idea because it's lightweight and low maintenance, but it also gives you a great look when cracking the walnut and once Louis stains it, it's going to look very, very good, all this aluminum.
The channels and the joinery we're going to do all of that together to make the bed, so I'm going to place this here, hold it down a little bit so it doesn't move and then I'm going to mark in the middle so I know where I'm going to cut. I'm actually an upholsterer, but I have a mechanical workshop. I make small side pieces so I do this for a bill. I've known him since he was a child. Came. I came to my shop one day and I was building my shop and he said I can do this and I said sure you can you know right boy he never stopped he just kept growing and growing okay I have these pieces marked, I'm going to salt and cut them so we can put this pad together right, we're here in the machine shop and I'm fixing to cut these channels here.
I'm going to move the table up until we touch the tool. I'm just doing it by eye. , we have to trim it a little bit, you can't hog this stuff, you have to trim it. I always have room to protect my eyes, you know, when the '49 Ford came, you know? That's one of those projects where you just shake your head and you say, "Oh my gosh, what am I getting into?" A lot of times when projects seem too far away, that just opens up more possibilities to create more customization in the project. I need the basics to get started, like a decent cabin when I frame them.
They're a little modified, hey, even more so, to build a new one when the suspension rides like shit, let's crank it out anyway, it's endless, it's whatever your brain can think of, whatever your skill set is. that you can build it into a custom car. Many people start with a drawing. I'm going to build this right, in my case what I like to do is just have an idea of the project and develop custom ideas. you go, I think in the end you create a much more special vehicle, a much more unique vehicle if you build it along the way.
A good example of that is the bed for the 49, for which we built completely by hand, one piece at a time and after a lot. John is finishing the floor right now, you know, it's been a lot of pieces to get here. We have the aluminum slats that Joe made in the machine shop. I have done all the calculations. I have everything figured out. The pieces of wood cut everything. It fits perfectly, so now the next step is to take and attach the wood to the aluminum, we'll put them back on the jig and work on screwing these things together.
Oh, hende, you have three big bones, now you won't be. able to see any of the fasteners, they will all be hidden screwed from the inside. You know the truck is going to look really nice and really clean, so the key to this is going to be keeping the wood nice and flush. With the aluminum I have my sink there so I can place the hardware. Once I have one piece attached to the aluminum, I'll get another piece and simply repeat the process 7 more times, so the next step is to drill a hole in the middle through each of these pieces and have them all line up on the same place, what I'm going to have to do is put a template in the drill to work from the end that I already cut to measure it, put the hole in the middle and it will be in the same place on each one of them, so I drill them all the middle holes, everything will line up, so next step place it here on the table and square it.
Get up and see if we can put our rod through it. This rod will help sandwich the center. Come on, almost there, go to your hole. I'm going to put some clamps on. Start pulling this whole thing nice and tight. Put a couple. of bolts to attach the end caps that will be on the bottom of the bed cover so that when it's close you won't see them. Joe made this piece for us here, he machined it to fit perfectly inside these square tubes and what they're going to do is hold the ends and keep it from sagging.
I have everything marked where it should be, so I check the drill and make sure I drill these things perfectly square. the material is one of the things about projects like this, people look at it, oh how cute, how cool, how cool, but they'll never really understand the amount of work and effort that goes into making something like this, as small as is this project. In the grand scheme of the entire truck, there's still a ton of work put into this piece alone, not to mention how much goes into the entire truck, so the next time you look at a really cool custom-built truck, give it some thought.
In how much work is done, you don't see that anyone has put much effort into it. We made our truck bed hinges on the '49 Ford, so we drilled, screwed, and bolted them. Now we'll go ahead and get it back on the truck and finish making our hinges. Now we need to make hinge brackets outside of the truck frame so I'm going to go ahead and make them with 8 in steel and this will make the box hinge up and down so now we'll move on to the actuators and the hatch action . I have this 8 inch plate here.
I'm going to make some tabs and that will locate our actuators at the bottom of our hatch and that's what I'm actually going to make the bed or hatch go up and down so you can see all the big work underneath. We cut our actuator brackets and installed them on our hatch. Here I'm going to go ahead and connect our actuators from time to time,we can go ahead and place them on our frame, weld them on, test it out and see if we can make a hatch go up and down, now we have a hatch, you can seal our awesome work underneath, see the awesome frame is ready so we take the cab out of the Ford 49, we finished all the sheet metal, we finished it in the body shop, now those guys are going to work their magic on it, yeah, you're pretty good there.
I've got the chassis rolled in, now it's time to take it apart, climb all the way up and get it out of the way, so I'll take the engine out. I'll take out the suspension. Disassemble everything. Weld what needs to be welded. Then we will send it without the powder coating. So as you can see, we have the '49 Ford pretty much completely wrapped up on the outside, the only thing left is the dash and as you can see, it has all these imperfections that I have to fix. I got a sander get it ready so I can put some body filler on it once I've worked all this up and we've got it ready we'll put a coat of primer on it and see what we have and probably add a little more now that I've got the dash pretty much completely sanded .
I walk towards where I can start working on the body. I'm going to use some fiberglass to smear it on and address any big imperfections. Once it dries, I can block it. It is important to make sure you clean it. Following the contour of the metal so when you start to pull up and lock it shouldn't be too complicated, most people don't really focus on the interior but once you're behind the wheel you can see all the details that this Dash You have it and once you finish it you will be very happy with it as we get to the end of a job as big as the 49 Ford, we have to do a lot of things at the same time while we finish.
John is going to start with the body work, I'm going to start with the door panels, so I have ideas in my head of what I want to do, so I'm going to put them on this piece of chipboard. I'm going to make an insert that will go inside these Parry some lights that way we can get a nice trim light around these pieces the speakers will go down down here I want to add a mat on the bottom of this door protects it from bumps, we have Walnut in the bed of the truck, so let's put some Walnut in, that's what's going to allow me to take some measurements, put it all in the computer and get the machines running. the router part is done, he made my parts for me, so next step is some work on the router table, take all these insert pieces, glue them on the base panel.
I'm going to grab the inserts, start working on the body a little bit, get them. ready to go so once those are done the door panel will be ready and we'll start working on the body and almost okay all the inserts from the body work are all over the place where they need to be so the Next step is to place it on the truck. on the sides, the thing will be ready to be wrapped and we can move on to the next thing. One of the first things you will notice in any vehicle is the color.
I want this truck to really stand out, so we'll use a special candy. paint and now it's time to choose that color. What's going on? What's happening? Bill 494, sprinklers, uh, sprinklers, man, we finally dialed them in. What do you think are candy colors? The sweet lemonade yes sir so we have a 24. Kat gold Bas metallic charcoal gray Bas and a metallic black base so the same caramel color just different base colors the same caramel color different base colors will give you a different effect this It's just man, I like it but it's too gold for this truck Yeah, I think for this 494, the darker color will make it stand out.
Oh, sure, we'll have about four coats of metallic black base. Four coats of sweet lemonade and then another four coats of clear, which will really make that truck pop. because of the contours or the L body, that's what we need right there, but we need a lot, we got you for sure, man, you need these n's, man, go ahead and keep 'em, I got some target practice, yeah, yeah, go ahead , man, it's okay, man. Alright brother, we choose the sweet lemonade. We are painting many parts on this truck from the frame engine transmission body in and out.
In this case, we are mixing a batch of 5 gallon buckets to get more color consistency compared to Trying to mix one gallon at a time, we can remove the shade and we do it that way, so that's what we're going for. to do with the 5 gallon bucket, so this candy has a pearl that makes it fail. you're a and a light look depending on how the sun hits it what makes a candy a candy is a translucent dye that goes over a certain base that gives you a certain look without that base you won't see that the depth of the caramel has a What of candy PE base coat we will throw in the gallon, so now we are going to add a bead of reducer to the Pearl candy base coat C.
Now it's time to spray this engine transmission and frame so we have the painted engine frame. painted, we're going to take it outside so you can put it all together, then we're going to bring the cabin in okay, so we've got our black sealer in there and we're going to go ahead and top it off with our black. base code and we're going to go ahead and hit our candy because we're going to have to paint everything at once, we can't do it piece by piece because being a candy, everything has to be the same to match us.
I can't go wrong with this one, so we have to finish one right, so we get our two caramel Coes when we let it dry, put it back together and paint it all in one go. A candy paint job is a lot of work. a lot of laps around the car Precision in your equipment using the correct material preparations is key if it wasn't prepared correctly something after that is going to fail so we have our c c there everything looks great we'll let it dry during the evening. our last piece, which is the bed, makes it look good, since the rest of the pieces, 4940, is all painted and the suspension is no longer chromed, so now we are going to put everything back together and 49 for is It's going to come out really, really nice and with the Chrome, the polish stuff and the sweet paint guy it's going to be slippery, it's not going to be like we're going to get it in there, look at this, oh, you just have to hit it harder, that's it. .
We recover all our chrome parts. I'm going to go ahead and start assembling the suspension parts, the HMS bushings and greasing everything and I'll grab the complete assembly right now, there you go, I have Mr. Corbin here helping me at any time. You submit parts to get Chrome, you always have to check and clean up the threads like what I'm doing now, there are always things that get into the threads and if you don't check and clean it up you usually end up with a seizure. bushing or H on your part, you also put antise on whatever part you are installing.
I'm going to thread it, yeah, and that's going to make sure there's no Seas pieces on your nice new chrome pieces, man, the chrome pieces are very nice, very nice. look you can see this much better and much clearer under the truck than a powder coated piece, great finish, man that's a simple finish. Every construction around here has a story. It's cool to think that this '49 Ford is a gift for dad from his daughter. Now we're at the stage where Matt is going to wire everything up, so here on the inside of the truck, this is where our fuse panels were mounted.
We're going to open our holes here so we can get our cables out. and hug the body as close as possible and then we're going to hit the frame right somewhere in this area that way, when it's all together, all of this will be hidden. I've checked it four times but I'm definitely going to check it again. be very careful, I mean you have one chance to drill the right holes, these are the bulkheads we normally use to get airlines into the cabin, you would put this in there and push your airline in, but this is the first time I've done it .
I've used them to run cables before, but when Bill said we don't want to see cables in the frame, there are no zipper times that would force me to figure something out. I know this maintains a good airtight seal and keeps water out. Things like that, so I thought why. Not running wires through it trying to keep it tight to the body but still I guess it has a symmetrical look so it looks like it belongs there and it wasn't an afterthought let's go ahead and drill them out now we start with a little We drill a pilot hole and then slowly increase the sizes which makes the hole easier to drill when you do it that way and you also don't want to create too much heat as the frame is painted it will start to bubble, nothing like that.
Anyone will see it sometime, but every build I make I like to not necessarily be better than someone else's build, but I like to be better than my last build. Luckily for me, this idea is working as it should. Let's move on. and let's move on to the rest of them and tie it up the last piece we have for the 49 ford is the center console now we have room for the 3p controller we have window switches we have switch control the tailgate switch controls the bed floor headlights foam interior light all in one light dimmer a piece of walnut send that stuff to Lewis let Lewis work his magic and we'll start building the console I have a collection of stains here John I'm just going to try make it work make something happen yeah sir, I think it will work, let's apply our cleansing dye, put some clear on it and we'll be ready.
This is a water-based cleansing stain, so it dries very quickly. It's going to bring out the beauty of that nutty and it's very easy to work with which I really like about the stain, it's very even, it's very forgiving, it dries very quickly and pretty much immediately, just go ahead and apply our top coat, we're going to continue. Go ahead and apply our solvent looking sealer, this will really bring out the beauty of this nut and keep it well protected for years to come. Now we're going to go ahead and sand this down to make sure it's nice and smooth so that Walnut by Nature is very grainy, so we're going to sand it really good and apply our top coat to the top coat and it's done.
This is an electric spray system, it has a low spray, so since we're not spraying in a booth, this is going to be the perfect machine to apply our solvent look sealer to the wood. Alright, all the pieces are made on the CNC, so now it's time to put the puzzle together. Stack, stack. We're just going to use a little bit of Stack Fab. here, stacking all the pieces, crafting everything in a stack, pretty, pretty simple, there, uh, okay, so the first half of the console is in place, fits into good shapes, looks great. I'm going to check and put some putty to fill the body. the gaps around the front once you have done little with the body work you are ready to build the rear half so the top of the rear half of the console is done and ready to go so the next step start building the sides, move it into place a bit.
More body work, we're ready to wrap it up and can kick it out the door any time you're building a console. Keep in mind your designs, your shapes make everything flow together, something unique, something different, something that no one else has. so the 49 ford console is done and done, man this thing looks great. I couldn't ask for it to look better, so with that being said, I'm going to go get it from the truck so we can get the truck out of the Buy in the past, you know, 49 Ford is pushing about 100 horsepower with the new engine Coyote and will give this truck a lot more power, but these engines come with a lot more wiring than before.
I haven't even looked underneath. I want to hide all the wires that go to the base of the motor so it looks super clean. I have a problem so I'm trying to figure out how to get the main power cable to the starter and then to our 80 pack without being seen. I definitely can't use the/on the tube like we're using it on everything else, yeah that's not going to work either and it could get into the cabin, but I mean that's going to mess up the interior. I think that's really the only option, right? here what we have, that's it, you're right, I need to get the lab.
Everything on the truck is strategically arranged from the manufacturer's point of view, from my point of view it makes it a little more difficult when I do what I have. do, I try not to interfere with whoever is doing the interior or the manufacturing or whatever, but I mean, sometimes you have to put your cables or put your mount where it needs to be and I mean, we're all good at what we do, so I want to say. The next person may be a little more challenging, but they will understand. Let's go ahead and start trying to run the cable through this was a short run, it was a lot easier than I thought.
It's a good idea to get too excited, usually when that happens the next one gives you trouble, chances are yes, we're definitely stuckin something. See, she knew the back couldn't be as easy as the front. I know I'm there. on that sway bar because they're catching me so I'm just trying to spin the line until I can't feel it man we got it now we're going to go ahead and tie our cables to this and lower them down. the frame, this factory harness that goes on the coyote engine, one of the main plugs that goes to the ECM is on the front because that's where the factory computers are mounted, so I went ahead and opened up the whole harness loom .
I moved the plug. By doing that inside the cabin, I had to extend some of the sensor cables. We had to cut them and lengthen them. We'll solder them one at a time to get rid of some of the mess. and in the end it looks clean, this part of the electrical part is quite crucial without this being done right, the truck is not going to work building something like this every minute, it's hard, like it's a hassle and you really have to love it do it to move forward. For me, doing it and holding on until the end is fulfilling that creativity of not being afraid that someone won't like what you did.
I mean, that's how you set trends, like doing new things that no one else likes. I mean, I'm sure. There are a lot of people who do it for the recognition and to build the cars, but I mean most of us do it because it's what we love to do. Moment of Truth, well, let's do it, please, please, please, please. Please, please, start, it's going to start good, Matt, it's going to start, tell me when you're ready, go ahead, come on, damn, that was loud. like hell, damn feeling, sure, all that hard work and it's there, I don't know what time it is, but it's late and that's a good reward and the rest is up to them, come on, every bill we do is special to us . and the customer, of course, but this 49 Ford maybe a little more because it's a gift and it's almost ready, we're putting the bed floor together for the last time, we're installing the bumper and the hood, polishing and polishing, and after 8 months of hard work, we are ready to return this once the vehicle is here, it's just an immediate rush, let's get this part, let's get these parts.
I have to be on my game, you know, make sure all the products here have been doing this for you know, over 15 years, you know, working with cars, trucks, you know, moving here, you know, making the big move with my family, I didn't know what to expect the first two years here, man it's been one of the craziest trips I've ever had. I fit in perfectly with everyone because they speak the language I speak custom trucks when Bill and the guys load it in the back and start running the final product is like no other you wouldn't even know that was the same vehicle that arrived the first day at the end of the day you are someone's dream really come true oh look at that oh my god the detail and you know everything the guys in the back did to that truck makes me so proud to be a part of it hi Stephanie me convinced that her dad has no idea where his trucks are in Stephanie Bill Carol, my dad, so we're going to play a little prank on her, you know, get her in, she does know something.
She wanted to talk to you about my dad's 1949 Ford F1, they are coming today so her dad can tell me what he wants in a building. I had one in high school and sold it. I regret having sold it forever. I have one or two regrets along the way, yes I have seen Bill's work before and I think this is the place to fulfill my dream and get this truck built. You know, the '49 Ford is a cool truck, I can definitely see you. I know you want something really cool built off of that, but we might have a little surprise for you.
Okay, Stephanie brought your truck in, you know, a while ago and we've been working on it for you. You know what you're doing, okay? let's see, come on, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, my family is leaving, yeah man, you'll like that thing beautiful, yeah, oh my god, it's on the ground, even okay, yeah, we had than to make it low for you, that's pretty low. My dreams come true. I walked up here and saw the truck, oh my God, everyone was screaming. I realized that my whole family was here supporting me. I am so grateful and blessed to have such wonderful people in my family, OMG. my family was involved in this uh I can't even tell you how much that means to me, they all did good, they did good, yeah, they did good, they all did good, it's beautiful when she brought her truck, I really did.
I don't want to address it, it was a lot of work involved taking something like that and turning it into something like this, but she convinced me, it was a special project, especially for you. I had one in high school and there's no way we can do it. I could have done that in high school. There are so many things I see that I like that someone worked on. Each of these guys had blood, sweat and tears. They sure had IT injections. Oh yes, we all are. updated updated oh i can't imagine how much time and hours they spent doing metal work on the truck, bed, fenders, drip rail, all body seams welded and cut, amazing metal work, that color It's crazy, it's so deep, deep and it kind of falls flat when the sun is on it, into the black and the shadows and all of that is unique right there, it's a sweet pearl lemonade on a black base, you couldn't have picked a color better.
Chrome, there's a little chrome underneath, there's a little chrome underneath, okay, that's what we wanted, everywhere you look it's custom touches, you'll be hard-pressed to find a '49 Ford like this anywhere on the planet. I agree, oh my god, oh. Wow, yeah buddy, oh my gosh, you see that 5.0 fits nicely under the hood.
