road

trips I took will be in another video Dave left about an hour ago. uh, we thought it would probably take the mustang a little longer to get to our stop today. We're not sure where we'll end up if we can stretch it all the way to Kansas City. We are not in a hurry, we have almost all of them.

Week to get home to North Carolina, so let's say three four days of driving, we're just going to see which one is faster, the model and the drill, but for now let's go to Lyman Colorado, let's look at some stats too that have. 22,000 miles on this thing again model i performance ready to rock welcome to lyman

colorado

we're plugging in the and here if the charging port opens here we go we're at arby's crazy wind out here huge side winds on the way i'll explain it to you in the car because you probably can't hear me.

We had the car pre-conditioned on the way here to warm up the battery again. It's a little cold outside 42 degrees looks like it's pretty well preconditioned 134 kilowatts no Great not terrible this is a 150 kilowatt version 2 supercharger and another car here a model 3 but they're in 1st gear and we're in 3rd gear , so it's all good and, yeah, I'm going to go in and have some rb before I go in. I have to say it's just an amazing commuter, this thing goes down the highway at 85 and no problem, driving alone in this car is really good for lane changes.
You know, I've owned a Tesla and actually both of my previous Teslas had rails. changes and I love it, and the fact that it costs ten thousand dollars to get that functionality or in some markets you can get an upgraded autopilot for five thousand dollars, that's really all you need, it's not worth spending the money, but It's really nice, so you will definitely enjoy it. my time here in Dave's model and we have the luggage packed in the back ready for many adventures to come just charging here at 135 kilowatts let's take a look at our next stop and then I'll get ready for some food Dave is charging the machi a only 20 miles from here.
I think he stopped with a pretty low state of charge, so it looks like he wants to go to Colby Kansas next. I think we'll skip some chargers. between guests we're going to skip Goodland, which is a good backup, but Colby is a good stop, actually I think one of the best, so let's cancel this, press continue travel and see how many miles it is exactly, so we have 144 miles. a strong north wind heading south, a side wind so big that it pushes all the trucks and pushes us, we are talking about 20 to 30 mile per hour cross wind, so what we will do is load the enough to get to Colby, if for some reason we need a backup, great, we can always stop at Goodland for five or ten minutes and as a backup, I walked into this little convenience store to use the bathroom.
Arby's is closed and they have a drive-thru. but that doesn't work because we're charging, so I guess we'll figure out the food later. I'm hungry, even though I'm charging at 127 kilowatts. I only had to move Stahls one because someone connected to 3b and me. I was walking back when he did it, and I thought, oh, you'll get faster speeds if you're in two, since I'm in three and this guy is in one and he just said oh yeah, yeah, great and then he just came back. In this car, I'm like, okay, what, so I just moved and we were at 72 kilowatts, for some reason, he split it up to split us up instead of just giving him our leftovers, so it was pretty interesting, so it forced us to split us up and I moved. he finished and our estimated time to complete it went from 15 minutes to five minutes, so it definitely saved us some time.
You know, that's the problem with these version two superchargers. You have to constantly maneuver everyone to get the fastest charge, uh collectively. of course, and yes, just going down here from 121 kilowatts to 48, this thing charges much better than my model 3 long range pack. I wonder why that is the case. My car makes about 105 kilowatts at 50 percent, we're here with 120 at 48.49, that's it. The interesting thing might be that my car has had a ton of supercharging, 80,000 miles of probably over 50 CC fast charging, so yeah, we're hitting the road after this, we'll increase the charge until let's say we get to 65 70 .percent something like that and we'll be ready to rock and roll good, we're loaded for a 15 arrival at Colby, I overcharged a little up to 78, we still have pretty good speeds, but it's definitely time to go, let's log off and get out of here. and we're headed to Colby Kansas maybe we'll intercept Dave on the way we just cross here about to cross into Kansas man it's flat outside and really windy?
I mean, trucks are like standing up on two wheels, standing up on one side. It looks pretty good, so Dave is right in front. I'm going nine miles an hour faster than him and I think we're going to be able to catch him before Colby, the car says, let's stay under 80 miles an hour to get to our destination. I'm doing 84. We're totally fine, especially because once I catch up to Dave, I can slow down and move behind the Mustang, but yeah, it should be an

easy

ride just sitting here on autopilot, no one's really on it. walking and enjoying the beautiful scenery, you know what everyone says, the center of the country is boring and although it is boring and not as interesting as going west from our house, I still like it, I think it's great that we just crossed.
Kansas and we see Dave for the first time all the way there. He is that lone car in the right lane. It's a bright blue car. It's

easy

to see. That signal is passing. Here we go. I left an hour, actually, more than an hour later. than Dave in the model Y and we've reached it in a very short time, so it just shows you how much faster a road trip or the Tesla is now granted. Dave probably isn't maxing out the maki yet, but he'll get there. And it has to be said that Dave looks good in the Mustang and rocks the exterior spec plate so I definitely appreciate that so we can choose to slow down and stretch it to Colby or I guess that's probably what we should do or we could get off here at Goodland, you can see it says charging is needed, but I've been driving fast. 22 miles to go 46 miles means just over 200 miles with a load going 74 miles per hour behind the mustang.
I think we can do it, so let's keep it up. I've made the decision to move forward, we have a one percent finish to stay below 75. Well, Dave is driving at about 75, so cruising along with that great view of the Mustang up front, I have to say I quite like it. that blue grabber, which is a good color and just having a good time. I'm in autopilot prison, even though he also had his hands on the wheel. I just wasn't putting enough weight on it, I wasn't paying attention and then it locked me out of autopilot.
So I'll have to recycle the car as soon as I get out, get back in, it'll let me go back to autopilot, but that wasn't from not paying attention, it just didn't have enough weight. the steering wheel, I guess well, I honestly can't tell you why the car is so scared of our arrival, but I just slowed down, uh, you know, everything looks like we're going to get there, totally fine, nine percent to go . 20 miles shouldn't be a problem, take a look here, it still shows minus one percent, but look at a projected 24 miles here, which is totally fine and only 19 miles to the exit, unless it's like a hill, which I don't expect it to be.
We should be able to do this, no problem, let me try to catch up with Dave and then I'll have to slow down. You know, typical kyle thinks here. We have a one percent finish, so we're not going to make it. and it's downhill on the way so there's really no problems here I'm just a little conservative at the moment we've come in with a lot of one percent buffer it's really windy out here I can't get out the door holy smokes this is like a tropical storm of some kind, holy, crazy, crazy, win, it feels like you're driving 50 miles an hour, stick your head out of a convertible top, that's crazy, so let's make sure this thing is charging and then we will have all the good food.
Here, this is one of my favorite super charging stops. If you're a long-time viewer of the channel, you know that the dogs always like to run in that park and we always get food here in Colby Kansas, so let's load up. We're at one percent and Dave is across the street charging the Mustang at the electrify america station so I ran out and got some snacks and some lunch, so far it's charged to 58, let's take a look at what it looks like the rest of the trip. As Haze says it will be the next stop with so much cross wind, I think we'll charge a little more, so yeah, we'll probably charge, I don't know, another 5 to 10 minutes, something like that, we're all in. charged up to 76 states of charge, let's run to Walmart and check with Dave, see how charging is going with the Mustang so far.
Now we're walking into Walmart and I think I saw the back of the Mustang. here, yeah, there it is, look at that good time, so I just got off the phone with Dave, he said he just needs a couple of percent more to go and, yeah, we'll stop next to it, why not? It looks like it just reached status 80. charging according to the screen, which means it's time to charge and exit. Yes, the mustang has a really strange charging curve, you know, below 80, but once you get to 80, it drops to 12 kilowatts or in this case 14, it just calls.
You because you have air conditioning on or something, but how is the car doing so far? Great, yeah, I'm learning that the gom in this last race I did 75. I was two under from the first race, so this one with the wind. I don't think it estimates the wind at all, so we'll run it at 75 miles per hour and see how amazing it goes. I'll enjoy it and wow, it's windy so it seems. Like we just booked some hotels in Salina Kansas and Dave is offline and ready to go. He likes to run at the speed limit.
I'm going a little faster, so maybe we'll see him at the hotel later. How's the day going, but no charging issues for the Mustang like I experienced on my trip again. I don't know if this video will be posted before the plug charging feature is what caused all our problems when you don't use plug in charging the mustang charges wonderfully so let's jump on the road let's figure out how to get on the road no I know, maybe we were supposed to turn the other way, I'm not sure, um, we have to go. behind us in the other direction, but yeah, let's jump on the highway and go to Hayes Kansas, only 106 miles, no problem, welcome to Haze Kansas, we've been here many times on trips, let's plug this thing in, don't be so windy like before. uh the previous stop, but it's still pretty busy now, the electrify america stations right over there, I figure that's where Dave is going, so I'm going to take a walk over there and see if we see him here, here's Dave arriving to Walmart right there. and I'm walking to meet him at the charger, man it's really windy, well we're in the mustang checking out how Dave is enjoying it on the road trip and we're doing a little calculation to see if we're loaded. enough, we are currently at 66 percent with 95 kilowatts 67 there is no way to see it in the mustang of course, but it is great to have these stationsColumbia Missouri.
I feel like I'm ev dave on the model and filming in the right place. This is what you see on Dave's channel. a lot of this exact side of the screen, this exact part of the wheel on this exact car, there we go, nice old truck, that thing is pretty neat and, yeah, it looks like a cool town, not bad, some nice houses here and if. Just nice little one-lane roads, uh, oh, it says for Elise, but I think it must be at the front of the building because people are lining up for Starbucks. I think we are good, yes, bad news, friends.
All Starbucks practically from Kansas. is out of strawberry acai, this is really a pandemic that is not reported enough in the news, this is the real problem folks, there are no strawberry acais and the U-turn lanes here are like one mile away from where I got this thing. beep, yeah, it's not going too well, I thought we were going to speed up this trip, buy some strawberry acai, we're in columbia, missouri, it seems like a pretty nice place, this guy is smoking some barbecue, I love it, but unfortunately no, well we'll try again I guess. along the way continuing the weirdness of this stop apparently Dave, you know, drove by while I was sitting in line at Starbucks, he walked by and said, oh, the freeway is closed, so I said, well, I'm going to go get some back roads.
So I just got off the highway and he said maybe they just started moving, but I wasn't sure he said, well, I'm just going to take a look at some scenery on the way through Missouri, take some back roads, take a look at Colombia and yeah, a really cool, pretty golf course here on the left, it's not that bad of a town so take some back roads and then we'll jump on the highway in six miles and head straight to San Luis, we are going on dirt roads and something that most people don't know about autopilot is that it will actually work better when it transfers from the pavement to the dirt to take you down the dirt road, it's actually pretty good, don't worry.
It will allow you to activate it when you're already here, but it will do its best to try to keep it working. Yes, the road was closed, so we're

taking

it. some back roads through missouri here on the model and and i must say i'm doing a great job, just uh, i mean, it looks all yankee janky here on the screen, but driving well, i love it, we've arrived at the electrify america station , there's a lot of an unreported pandemic going on here, yes it's here so I stopped it now at all the Starbucks from colby kansas to saint charles missouri what are you missing?
They don't have strawberry acai soda, well I'm not sure who drinks it, yeah, very strange people. Yeah, they really drink like black coffee or something. There must be people in Colorado thinking they're sick and there's another under-reported pandemic, which is you picked the place with the chatimo, which is what I need to charge, but it turns out I have enough energy to get to Mount Vernon and I'm already on the road , okay, if that's the case, I'm going to recharge real quick on the supercharger and then I'll see you for the verdict. Okay, the car looks good.
I feel, yeah, so Dave loaded up the maki, of course, and I was going to go to the supercharger, but look at this, we have 51 to go 97 miles. 6 arrival should be fine, I'll just put it on autopilot behind one. He and Dave will get all the air out of the way, so we're going to rock. Welcome to the Doubletree here in Illinois. We have an interesting site. We have a Tesla model. Here you can see very good performance. Ap1 is not plugged in, although I have done so. plugged in the model and here of course and that's charging great and then it's actually running at 148 kilowatts at max and 73 degrees here and then we have another

tesla

here parked but not plugged in so two model s, uh ev What do we call these ice chargers?
I don't know, it doesn't make any sense, why would you park here, block usable spaces when there is a giant parking lot right there, come on people that's ridiculous, they charge us up to 71 enough? to get to kanawha, I guess or katawa, I think it's cudawa. uh, Dave just left the charger here. I actually saw it on the way, which was really fun. I need to stop and take some headache medicine because my migraine is getting a lot worse. and they didn't have anything there, so let's go get some headache medicine. Dave is already on his way and I took my time, of course, and uh, yeah, going to Kaduwa, let's go Bjorn style to the circle.
Oh yeah folks we got the hot dog we got the excedrin everyone in the k circle we're rockin' bjorn style right down the street from the supercharger we hit the highway and we're headed to cuddawa you should get there with 14 just 128 miles you join us here in karawa kentucky charging the model and on the 150 kilowatt supercharger john and kathy are there super friendly and are road tripping with their new models asking quite a few questions about third party chargers they were asking about the machine they reviewed dave's model Of course , it's really nice and that's one of the best parts about EVs: you really get to meet a lot of people.
Look, some people don't want to meet people and therefore you don't have to talk to anyone, but I certainly, you know. They came up and asked about the y wheels, the Martian wheels, and they're super, super nice, so there's a little bit of food here, but we've been talking for about 20 or 30 minutes, I think the y is already starting to decrease a little. A little bit, let's take a look because I'm not sure, but you can see that the Tesla T isn't flashing as fast as it did when we first got here and that means it's starting to slow down.
Yes, 73 says where you have enough to continue. I think the next stop on the trip might be Nashville, going to Dave's daughter's house and uh, I'll have some pizza and some good stuff there, that's where we'll spend the night. They have two wall connectors for us to charge. Dave has a Tesla for j1772 adapter for the mustang that I suggested he buy and so he did we are ready to go to nashville tennessee one of my favorite cities good morning from nashville tennessee we sleep at Dave's daughter's house we have the mustang all charged we have the model and loaded up to 90, you see the way the superchargers are spaced, there is no point in fully loading this car, we have to stop at the superchargers anyway, i also have some conferences to attend so im just going to go.
Those while I'm at the chargers and I'm probably very overloaded, but we're going to have a very relaxed drive, you know, 300 miles to Dave's house where we'll drop the cars off, so it should be a pretty relaxed day. but it wouldn't be an off spec road trip without a little rain folks so let's go to starbucks this morning here in nashville tenn we're in east nashville and let's go grab some drinks to start the day are we there? the beautiful Starbucks and an adequate line, but hey, I think it's worth it, so we have nothing to do today except the road trip.
Dave has his own schedule. I'm going ahead of him a little bit on the maki, like I mentioned, so damn. Look at this line up here, but uh, yeah, I think we can do it. Turn the cart. Here we go. Well, I stopped here at La Quinta Inn for no other reason than I needed to. at this presentation and I just found some level two right on the side of the road, right there, I said, well, hey, you can also grab some juice while we're here, so load up on the flicker chargers, man, it was a headache to set it up.
Honestly, opening up the uh Blink app and putting in my credit card details is a giant mess, so now let me move on to this presentation which should take about an hour, they'll probably charge us up to 80 percent and at that point we'll make it . to the Knoxville charger, no problem I think, and worst case scenario we can always stop in Cookeville which is a bit off the highway and inconvenient, so this works out great if we can get enough power to get there to Knoxville, yes, especially with all this rain. It would be amazing an hour later, we're charged up to 83, we added six kilowatt hours to the battery pack, a lot of that, I probably would have gotten more, however I was running the air conditioning the whole time, it's actually kind of hot 65 degrees the rain has stopped the sun is coming out there are like accidents on the road take a look there's just a lot of traffic around here and um yeah I say let's log off and go to Dave's house now that I finished that presentation on the design strategy of the mercedes eqs, yeah, a little, a little boring, I have to say welcome to a pretty full Knoxville supercharger, we're going to load pretty slow here, uh, because we're sharing with someone and I looked at their screen and they were like 20, so always I can move around actually it's not that bad over 50 kilowatts hey I can't complain uh so everything's fine we're doing 66 kilowatts great um yeah I'm going to eat some bojangles came from Colorado to get some bojangles and then we're Let's rock and roll towards Dave's house, so we need a pretty deep charge here, getting some really good speeds here. 140 kilowatts, I just went to Starbucks and used the bathroom and now it's time to enjoy some bojangles, a really healthy trip, this time we're headed.
Went to Knoxville now and charged up to 92, met some really nice people at this supercharger and headed to Dave's house, 164 miles, here we go.
