Tesla Model 3 Adventure Camping Across North Dakota And Montana

Jun 07, 2021
Welcome back to another off-spec road trip in this episode. We will leave the

north

ernmost city in North Dakota, cross Montana and end up in Glacier National Park. Make sure you buy some popcorn because this is going to be a long and adventurous episode. with our

tesla

model

3 performance and of course all the data hello and welcome to minot,

north

dakota

, this is alyssa's brother, garrett, and we are charging at the first and only public DC fast charger in all of north

dakota

, opened a week ago. Garrett lives here in Minot Garrett's in the Air Force. He can fly B-52s and really cool stuff and this is a Chatimo ccs 50 unit actually 75 kilowatt 50 in chademo of course and it's really cool to see this infrastructure that made this trip so great. it's easier, but we're heading towards the middle of this field because we have a problem, as you can see, Alyssa has the dogs and the blues ball, her tennis ball fell in this deep hole and she just can't find it, she's quite annoying. about that, so we're going to let her get to that while she's charging our car, she needs about an hour on the charger to give us enough power to get back into the supercharging grid.

We could stop by the base today. We could go see. We'll see some things in town, but one thing we can say for sure: we'll head west and end this episode in Glacier National Park, where we've been

camping

and will continue

camping

in our Model 3 across the country. In the middle of nowhere, so stay tuned for this episode. We finished charging that Shadamo station, which again is the first and only public DC fast charger in the state of North Dakota. At the time of recording, we went to Minot Air Force Base, where Garrett is. a navigator in the air force for the b-52s, so let's figure out where we're going.

More Interesting Facts About,

tesla model 3 adventure camping across north dakota and montana...

We actually loaded up to 96 at the Chatimo station, but we ended up going back to our hotel and spending the night, so it's actually the next morning. We want to go to Glacier National Park and we're going to find places to camp there, hopefully, but we can't go through Canada. The car would be nice because those are all version 3 superchargers but what we're going to do is go back to bismarck it's interesting says jamestown zero available hmm anyway we're going to bismarck dickinson glenn dive and around here all the 250 kilowatt chargers are part of this new leg of chargers we will be introducing so our next stop will be bismarck, north dakota, va it will be a pretty cool desolate drive on the way down, i don't expect to see many cars at all. 107 miles will hit 37 percent, maybe we'll just tear down after this, I think Alyssa will drive, she'll have the dogs play in the dog.

Parking here at our hotel, one of the reasons we chose it, they had wall outlets and a great dog park, and I only needed to charge the car at 80 last night, no reason to charge it very high if we're not going to use it for Alyssa to drive after Dickinson so she can edit videos for you guys to see. Goodbye then and now we are at the Bismarck supercharger. They're doing some work, I think on landscaping, which is nice because our chargers open up. We're at nine percent, we burned a lot of juice to get here at 410 watt hours per mile just because we had that huge headwind near Minot, but let's plug this in, we have to shoot a couple of videos, of course, for EVs internal, you can see. the bms is a little confused going nine ten nine percent and let's charge this thing up let's see if we can get to 250 kilowatts and we're going up we just saw 247 kilowatts which are pretty good speeds either way can't complain of 246.7, can we?
tesla model 3 adventure camping across north dakota and montana
Look 250 even though the dogs are drinking some water 248 come on, don't go down, that's fine still, that's pretty much maximizing this, not bad at all, so the job they're doing here is just putting up a sprinkler line. so the grass looks good around the charger looks pretty good, I still have plenty of open spots to charge and honestly no you're not going to fill this up in the middle of North Dakota like I said we'll probably be the only one se it's loading here today so it's totally fine, we have a bunch of bugs all over the car that look really nasty, but that's the only way to travel on the road.
Our next stop will be Dickinson, North Dakota. This has been more or less the latest version three. to plug in here and actually based on the plug I'm sure it's not active yet but it depends on the car and uh Tesla obviously uses real time charger status so four of the eight available are showing me that maybe one cabinet is down but another cabinet is up so I could plug it in, it won't give power but we'll try another stall and we should be fine. This is very common for version three installations when they are new.
Same thing on this Montana supercharger, so we're going to Dickinson, it says a 20 finish. In fact, I think we're going to charge, you know, just for a couple more minutes because there's a really big headwind that we're going to deal with. fight heading west and, you know, we're not in a big rush, Alyssa, are you going to do this stretch okay, yeah, okay, and I'm going to edit the video of the second part for these guys to see, yeah, and you're happy about it, buddy, so happy, Alyssa's got the Jimmy John, oh yeah, incredibly fast, actually.
It was pretty quick use the bathrooms let's disconnect she'll drive and we'll go to the next supercharger what's he doing in front? you want to get up you want to rewind a little later we want to get off the highway for a tour Along the Haunted Highway, this is a collection of the largest scrap metal sculptures in the world and they are all found along a 32 mile stretch of road two lane in North Dakota. We were able to stop and see most of the sculptures along the road. They are amazing and it's great to get traffic off the highway into small towns and this is a grasshopper jumping on the grass.
I think we're with Gary, the man who created all the things you've seen so far along the Haunted Highway. Why did you do this right? I guess I started with the idea of helping keep our little town alive. Oh, that's great. I wondered how you can bring people from the interstate here. Everyone wants, everyone wants a great back. a big factory isn't going to make it to a town of 100 people, but I finally found out what the ranchers and farmers all over the Midwest were good at, they're good at welding, so use what they're good at for damage, but I thought, well, no one is going to stop normal sculpture, but they might stop for the love of the world.
Yes, I love it, Gary. I've done an amazing job here. All of this has been fantastic. It's great to meet you, thank you and uh. Hopefully you'll see other people with electric cars traveling to stop it yourself too. Yes, it's very nice, thank you. You've got a good one, so it's really cool to meet Gary, who has made all these sculptures. How amazing it was to run into him. It takes him six years to make one. I forget how many there are but I think about 10 and to paint them, sorry for all the wind, I can't do anything to paint them.
Use this old US Air Force fire truck, how cool. That this is incredible. I will definitely have a collection of strange fire trucks one day. I just think they're the best things anyway. We won't arrive at Dickinson with much of a charged battery. Now we have to turn around and go back, especially after the explosion. On some fantastic dirt roads we used a little more energy than we should. We're going to the Dickinson supercharger, here we go, so we arrive at Dickinson at two percent perfectly planned. We went down the enchanted road. Enough. Look at this.
They have a We're definitely going to use a trash can and a windshield washer that we're going to plug in and go, you can see the whole cabinet one is locked for some reason, it shouldn't be running, but the four stalls in cabinet two you can see that 2a starts a b c and That's where we're rocking and rolling and we've ramped up to a maximum of 250 kilowatts, oh yeah, pretty good, so our next supercharger stops at just 90 miles. I think something like this isn't very far at all, 96 miles, but I'm pretty sure. We want to stop at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and see if we can see some bison and also visit this cute little town of Medora, which is like an old western town.
I don't know, I think it's a little cheesy, but you know. We'll show you lots of fun little stops along the way here in North Dakota, we're in no rush so what we're going to do is probably load a lot more than we need to just to get to Glendive Montana. I think that's what this one is, because who knows how much time we're going to spend in the park and in Medora, we need to keep the air conditioning on, so we'll charge it up to, I don't know, 90 or more. To charge here for about 25 minutes to get to 90, so I'm going to take our key that has a cyber truck keychain on it, I'm going to open the box and I'm going to take one of the Evanex sun visors that are made for the

model

3.
So we have all of our things here, as you can see, for camping, the one we're going to use tonight could be a very windy campsite, so let's put the windshield cover on and go into some of these tents while we wait. These heat shields all over the car now are the only ones that we're not doing on the front windows when it's nice and dark, back there for you guys, someone can look in and they'll see dog mode when we close the screen, uh, let me. show that the dog mode owner will be back soon, we have the temperature set to the lowest possible level of 66 degrees and they should stay nice and cool there, we can monitor it from our phone, let's run to a store, we have about 20 minutes to kill.
We just completed the charge to 90 percent blue, what do you think of that, friend? Not much, so we'll go from here to Theodore Roosevelt State Park or National Park. Sorry, we'll explore Medora and might end up camping there. It's already four, there are two beautiful roads, apparently we can drive, we're not sure where we'll stay tonight, but we'll find a good place, right, Alyssa, right, that's your, that's your job, oh no, yeah, and I will win. No need to charge it tonight because we have enough power to get to Glenda from Montana. Alyssa will be driving so she can continue editing the videos for you.
We're going to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Yes, Alyssa drives. We will need the radar detector. So the safety autopilot detects him as a pedestrian. We need to get Bison on screen right here. Ellie likes to just sit back and relax. Very rarely we can have it here. What a pleasure it is for you to come. and join us today ellie ellie really liked looking at the bison she was very intrigued she doesn't really park at anything but she seemed to love it which makes sense because you love everything don't you ? A little coyote that's probably driving everyone crazy. the prairie dogs right now, I bet he has a good meal living in this park every day, well I would say it was an amazing time in Theodore Roosevelt national park, I saw a lot of bison, wild horses, they are so cute, They were very nice.
It was an amazing stop, really great. I hadn't been before. We originally thought maybe we'd camp around here, but it's 7:20 p.m. m., we felt pretty good, we only left Minot at 11 a.m. anyway. m., so we just went in at a different time. area so it will be light a little later as we head west I think we're just heading to the Glendive Montana supercharger which is the next one to the west and we're camping tonight in Montana so we'll try to find a spot out there join to us at Glendive Montana supercharger welcome to Montana we're here nine percent hooking up to your new supercharger.
Are we the first person to use this supercharger who knows the new version three on these pretty nifty pedestals? this is brewing this is where the ride starts to get better we had a great experience in theodore roosevelt national park and it will only get better from there the charging is working we are moving forward we are at 10 already about to reach 100 kilowatts and then it will increase to 250 from there the temps are dropping it's in the mid 70's at this point it almost feels cold we've been used to some really high temps even in North Dakota it was in the low to mid 90's so that this 70 degree weather feels great, interesting supercharger because there's not much in town, it's in a Holiday Inn hotel, I think so, Holiday Inn, big fan of those, they're always great, eight-seater supercharger, 250 kilowatts, what more could you ask for?
Although this is really cool, we're Let's figure out our plans because we really can't find a campground that's open, let's take a look and talk to Alyssa and we have thisthing fixed and at the maximum of approximately 250 kilowatts, very good, we are going to let the dogs urinate because you have done it. I haven't been out for a hot minute, let them go pee and then we'll decide what we're going to do. Look at this 250 kilowatts, we won't have much time if it charges that fast in the time it took. make dogs pee and we haven't even used the bathroom yet, the car is more than half full, this version 3 load is pretty good and the most recent update, which isn't even in our car, has a profile Much more aggressive charging which means it will only charge faster, I love it, this is definitely the charging standard.
I think over 200 kilowatts are needed for road trips right now. 150 is too slow. I'm sorry for all the toners that only charge 55 kilowatts, that is not the future of transportation, this for long road trips you need these high power chargers, they are great, we have a charge of up to 64 and it is quite conical, let's go to mile city,

montana

. now this supercharger has had some problems it has turned on off on off some stalls work others it's not new um but it says three out of eight available and

tesla

does the charging status in real time so if it's available that means it will charge with fingers crossed um because the billings It's 210 miles, that's a really deep load that we would have to do.
We have more than enough to get to Mile City, of course, this is how long it took us to do our things here. We have 34 arrivals in Montana, you can do 90.95 miles an hour up and down the highway, no one cares, the speed limits are over 80, so let's just go to mile town and get some miles under us so we haven't come too far on our trip and we're like Looking for a campground we stumble upon one really close to here so we have about half a charge and um mel at this campground we call it a 50 amp outlet we'll just charge it and we will set up our camp during the night, it is going to begin.
It's going to rain overnight so let's stay here in beautiful Terry Montana, I mean it's beautiful, there's not much, but what a beautiful place to be, so let's go camping. I'm going to finish editing tonight and apparently it has good wifi which is important and now you're joining us at our fantastic campsite. Mel is the man, this is basically his backyard and he has a little side business of 10 spots where we can park and load, and this used to be a really key charging spot before superchargers went away. He says, oh yeah, the Tesla guys stop all the time to charge and I told him the supercharger network had just come in and he was a little bummed because he loved seeing the cars and meeting the owners.
We talked about electric vehicles for about 20 minutes. right now and it was a really cool experience, great guy, so now we're going to open up our roof box that has all of our camping gear and we're going to set up camp right behind the car. We'll be bracing for some big storms tonight. We're going to have wind, rain, who knows what else, so we're going to put the rain fly stake in the tent, do it all right because we may have some time on the way and this is the gazelle t4 plus, this one is just updated.
For 2020, a really sick tent, we're going to put up the tarp, then the tent, we have an inflatable air mattress, the car doesn't really need to charge to get to the supercharger, so what I'm going to do is plug it into either both. one of this or that nema 1450 I'm going to set it to start charging at 2 in the morning at 90 percent, actually yes we will do 90 and that way the car considered a low state of charge tonight around 40, which one is really good for the battery and two will help calibrate the bms because it has been overcharged so much so Alyssa what do you say?
We set up this tent and get it going and just like that, a couple of minutes later, the tent is up. It's surprising how fast this is. Honestly, it takes longer to put up the tarp than it does to get this thing up. Tonight we will put the rainfly on it and then stake it while we set up camp. This is the first camp we come across. which doesn't actually have a wall outlet to inflate our air mattress, charge our laptops and things like that, but we are prepared, we have a 300 watt pure sine wave which is great for electronics, a 12 volt to 120 converter volts so we can plug in.
We put it in the lighter and it gives us energy. We have tried it. Inflate our air mattress. It can hold that charge and can charge all of our electronic devices. So we're going to run an extension cord from the car to our uh. our tent and then inflate our air mattress, put the lights in there, so let's set up camp with our inverter. Good morning, very windy night, we had to tie the tent to the car so it wouldn't fly away and it rained a lot. It was our first camp in bad weather. It was very dry here.
The tent was great. We have, you know, you can obviously see the water drops on the ceiling. It's sunny now. It is around 8.30 in the morning. But originally we put up the tent and it started flying so we had to tie it to the roof bars uh and other than that everything was great the dog slept well we slept well and now we're going to pack up camp and figure out where we're going to end up today . You can see that all of this came off and broke and those are the straps that Alyssa is taking off.
Now we tie them to the box on the roof of the car and are you giving the dogs drinking water from our roof that holds the water we have the dog's food ready to go we have his water we have some garbage editing materials and now I need to place our air mattress there this is the bag that our tent fits in it fits very easily and you can see that it is already starting to collapse, you just push to each side, this is the gazelle t4, also, it is a really great tent, super, super easy to install and disassemble.
I have almost everything out of here except our air mattress and a sweatshirt, so I have to fold this. put it in the car, put the tent down and then we're ready to go, we'll stop by Mile City Montana supercharger, it's not showing up on the shared outlet, it's new, I think the same problem we saw was a Dickinson. where I think one of the cabinets is completely down but there is one available but we don't necessarily need to charge there to get to billing but I would like to see it plug in for a second and then move on oh no. there is a fair going on there is a fair on the street well we will be here the next two days because we are in a high state of charge we cannot take advantage of the three speed version again that only happens between zero and 35 percent where we can charge more than 150 kilowatts, so we're not going to waste a lot of time here, but we want to make sure we get to the billing supercharger with a little bit of buffer because of course we have the roof hood that uses a lot. of range, but two, we can drive 90 miles an hour all the way there, so it's faster for us to just put some extra juice in here, we're also going to get lunch, not that we're in a big rush and then just we're going all the way to Billings and we came up completely empty, so I think we'll do a load of, say, 80 here, maybe 75 80 somewhere around there and then we'll go out for breakfast or lunch at this cool place down the street and We'll be fine, this doesn't look so bad, right?
Oh yeah, we really haven't gotten very far. It's already a little late. We only camped about 40 miles away this way, but we woke up late. We set off. We had loaded. a long lunch, so we'll go from here to Mile City, they'll charge us up to 80 in billing, then we'll head west on I-90 and maybe stay somewhere in this general area, on the south side of the glacier and So tomorrow we're going up to the park, which is going to be great. Well, I was just saying we wouldn't make it without charging, but we're at the limit.
Do you want to explain what is happening? Yeah come on. We have very strong winds, yes, very strong headwinds, massive headwinds, in fact, so much so that we have had to slow down to 62 miles per hour, yes, 71 miles to get there and it shows a two percent arrival , but if we continue driving. Since we're driving, we're only going 68 miles and it's 71 to get there, so of course you can always extend the range of your EV by slowing down, but we've slowed down a lot. You were doing 85 90. miles an hour when we first left and everything was pretty blue, I guess he's having a dream, I don't know and uh no, no, not until we get below 55, but uh, yeah, we'll have than sailing quite slowly, well, that was a painful stretch of headwinds and lift that we even overloaded a lot on the last charger, but we made it to two percent.
Good job keeping it slow, which isn't like you. Okay, blue, please don't come out, let's go find this thing. super loading this is a version two we are back on the old network we have seen almost all the new v3 on that new network we show connected and working here in a second it is communicating it will start loading come on yeah there we are . go and these are some interesting restrictions on these signs, you see this two hour parking lot between 12 and eight, so it must be an overflow parking lot for a store. I imagine that store over there isn't quite sure why that's the restriction, but that's okay.
I drove for the rest of the day. I finished editing that video when we got to the parking lot, so we're back to the version 2 superchargers, which means with the heat it's out right now, these handle temperatures are going to get pretty hot, so what? What I'm doing is I'm taking a rag covered in cold water or at least a little bit colder than the tent, but it's soaked and I'm soaking the handle in that rag and what that will do is maintain the temperature. down inside the handle so that chargers don't limit charging speeds because this handle gets too hot which seems to be the biggest limitation of this system and this is an easy fix to ensure a longer charging session at high speeds.
The other trick you can do is just disengage, move to another open and you'll be back up to top speed, but this will at least prolong the need for that to happen, so let's take a look at where we're headed after this. . in billing every once in a while we're going to go here, which is where glacier national park is, so i think we should just charge your hop charger to charger, it always makes more sense. The big wooden mountain is only 64 miles. away we will charge up to approximately 45 50, we are doing 142 kilowatts, which is a big charge.
It looks like it's right next to the highway and that will be the quickest way to get to Bozeman, which will be the next charger after that, too. Bozeman is a cool city that I've always wanted to visit and have never been to, so maybe we'll explore Bozeman. Welcome to Big Timber Montana. What a cool place. It's about a mile and a half from the highway. like it's on the road before, no big deal, cool, like stores and stuff, we have snacks, you can buy almost anything you want in that store, it's great, I think we'll head to Bozeman next. the plan is only 63 miles away we already have a charge up to 47 you know this damp rag on the charging handle i been making keeps this thing charging super fast throughout the whole process welcome to beautiful bozeman

montana

, one of the best places we just passed by amazing downtown, they have Montana State University here, if you've seen in our videos you know Alyssa is studying for her gre, she needs to go to grad school somewhere place to get physical therapy and they have a good program so maybe this is on the list, let's drive around campus fast just to see it because how cool would it be to live here and do tons of off-roading.
You know, this is where we should grab a couple of riviens and just go. crazy expeditions all over the place uh a lot more than what we're doing here this is a sign that hopefully future expeditions with some off-road vehicles we're loaded up to about 50 percent we'll go south not too far to be big sky montana which is a ski town there is also a supercharger there and we are going to go to big sky for dinner and welcome to big sky montana what a cool town this is a huge ski town and they have a ton of snow and in some places that get a lot of snow.
I'm starting to see superchargers being installed this way and I think I know the reason if you look at some supercharger installations that are faced this way typically when the plow comes they push the snow up and tilt. At least here they won't get damaged with all the snow that tilts, accumulates here, so I think we're getting pretty tired, at least notI slept a lot last night, so we're looking for a place to camp somewhere. in this beautiful place, I mean, can we complain about these great stores here that are not so great and, um, just a beautiful trip, so let's carry this much more than we have to because we don't know if we will.
Whether camping with or without electricity, it is a great place to hang out. We'll let the dogs out. We'll charge it probably up to 80 or 90 percent and then figure it out from there. Alyssa is looking for campsites. Now we don't know exactly where we're staying yet, but we found a cool town in the mountains called Ennis and all the other navigation systems are basically on the other side of the mountains and want to guide us. but Apple Maps is bold and there's like a rocky, dirty mountain pass that goes through the mountains that we're definitely going to take, so I think if we can get out of here, we're at 81, it's only 33 miles if we go through. the mountains so even if we get to a place we can't get to or go through we can always turn around and come back here to the supercharger so I see it as a very small risk and maybe we'll see some beautiful views and there's probably no no one else out there, so what do you say about that?
Let's do it. Yes, it sounds fine. Adventure is the way Tesla wants to guide us around and that's how we're going to go, which is basically just top to bottom. mountain and enes we'll see if we can do it, I don't know, I wanted to have a sip of water and I had just activated the autopilot so I could open the lid and when you activate the autopilot and release the accelerator pedal it maintains the speed and then when you get out, It gives a lot of acceleration to get back to the set speed and I knew this was going to happen but I tilted the water bottle forward but then it really gave it everything and it just spilled water on me I mean I don't know what Tesla is thinking with this accelerator pedal setting on autopilot, but it's really bad and I even compensated for it ahead of time and I'm still covered in water and even you think there's a problem.
It was very cold and not the most comfortable anyway. I hope I need my phone back because that is the only navigation system taking us through the mountain. Well, we had fun but We can't go any further, I guess we'll head back to the main road, but what an amazing section of dirt road this was, so we headed back down the road towards the Big Sky supercharger, I think on the same one. plugged in let's get it up to 90 percent alyssa ordered a pizza looks like a cat walked all over our car alyssa ordered a pizza let's let the dogs go it's already at 85 percent but while we're here we'll bump it up to 90 and then We're going to Butte Montana, which is way to the west, where instead of camping tonight because I have a migraine and I can't upload this video without wifi for whatever reason we have.
Hot spot issues, we'll stay at a hotel and then go back to camping with our regularly scheduled campsites, so we'll head out to Butte Montana and maybe drive around here a little bit as well. We have a pretty big pizza that we probably should. I've been thinking about space because we really don't have much space in this car, the video is going up here, hopefully it's still going and, yeah, we have to put this pizza box with us and we'll eat it on the way west. Butte, so we're about to go for a run at Starbucks here in the morning in Butte Montana.
We stayed in the rooms. It was an honest review. Absolutely horrible. Really bad. I can never recommend these days in particular and they are usually not that bad. It was horrible, just bad air conditioners, rooms were disgusting, not a good place, however the place we got was the last one available, it was right next to an electrical outlet, so of course I charged the car during the night and consumed approximately 10 kilowatt hours. Which is great and just means we'll have to recharge for a little less this morning, so let's go to Starbucks while Alyssa is showering and we'll head to the glacier.
Oh my god, she looks like a tramp, what the hell is going on? Here I think she just got out of the shower and hasn't done her hair yet, but you're fine so this is where things get interesting, we're here in Butte, we're going to load up a little more just to grab another one. we turn off the supercharger and then we are going to go to missoula and in missoula we need to do almost a 100 charge because again we are going to spend a couple of days here on the glacier and there is no DC charging infrastructure so we need all the juice we we can get in missoula from missoula we will drive nice and easy to the glacier, we will find a camp, hopefully, with power that solves all our problems, but if not, we will be prepared for a dry camp, as they say. there's no power, there's no hookups and then there's a couple of these type of level twos in the area and it's going to get pretty interesting, which I always enjoy trying to find charging, so let's get going, now we're plugged in literally half a block from distance. the hotel in Butte with beautiful mountain views.
Honestly, this city is not that good. I hate to say it, but there are sketchy people around you, you can say it's a little lower quality, especially than Bozeman, but I kind of expected this in the mountains. to be like a mountain town and it's not at all, it feels like you don't know just the normal roadside restaurant town anyway, we're gonna load up here just for a couple minutes, we're headed to missoula and there it is where Let's do the long haul, we might find a dog park along the way because I think it would be nice to just take the dogs for a walk because they are not allowed off leash inside the glacier away from our campsite so we will definitely want to get something.
To get power out of them, we won't need much time here thanks to charging on the 110 overnight at the wall outlet. We'll probably only need five ten minutes because again, we can travel pretty fast on the highways in Montana, so we'll put in a little bit. a little cushioning, I need to rearrange the dogs area in the back to give them a little more room buddy you can always use more room with this toy and then we're off to Missoula get you a stick buddy yeah. that's good, I had some leftover pizza, so that's what's for breakfast today.
Cold pizza is great, wouldn't you say rubbery? So, then, welcome to Missoula, where we're at the best supercharger or one of them, because there's a Starbucks right there. I already went. However, today there is no need to go back, we are going to charge this to 100 and we will be here for a long time because, as you know, as the batteries fill with the state of charge as the pack voltage increases, it does not It can draw as much current as there are many amps in the pack so it has to slow down to protect itself from over voltage and that is the technical reason they slow down as the pack fills up.
I'm going to put a cold rag over the charging handle because if it's at five percent, it will dump all the current there when the pack voltage is very low and then back off as it fills up, and that will heat up the handle, especially since it's directly in the sunlight, not that it's too hot, although we are here anyway. for a while, the dogs running seems like a beautiful place, really beautiful, and they can run around here, which will be a lot of fun, we're already at 91, let's charge it all the way. Alyssa just stumbled upon Starbucks.
We met some fantastic model Y owners who just traded in their three really cool blues and Ellie got to see another dog here. We had a great time and now it feels like the first time we are waiting for the car once Alyssa arrives. So it's really not that bad, we're just going to hang out for the next 15 or 20 minutes or so, while this thing is fully charging, we're fully charged to a hundred percent. It's 144 miles until our planned charging stop which I believe is on. I've heard they turn them on and off, other than that we'll be creative with charging into campsites that sound like they're full.
We don't really know what we're going to do, but we're going to go find out. At a load of 100 it is still filling up but we have the air conditioning running at maximum so it may almost never fill up because we have a high voltage load in the car that runs the air conditioning so hard, so I think we're ready to unplug and We're heading to Glacier National Park, get ready for this video because it's about to get really beautiful. Yes, welcome to beautiful Glacier National Park. We decided: Can you get our pass? We decided to purchase an annual National Park access pass for the entire vehicle. uh, and for the two of us, so I don't actually know how much it was, but I think probably about a hundred dollars isn't always 80.
It's not bad because it almost pays for itself, actually more than it pays for itself with everyone. the parks that will come along this trip so I think it was smart to do it and we have a year from the date of purchase so at the end of July 2020 uh 2021 we will have coverage for yes so it will work on all the national parks and me. I think some state parks accept it and you also get discounts on things like Recreation.gov. If you are camping at any of those sites, they will give you a discount if you have this car and access to free camping on blm or forest service land.
Also, yes, it's very good to know for sure, we're on the beautiful road heading towards the sun here in Glacier National Park and we're about to see some of the craziest views ever seen. We'll load up first. station at Lake McDonald, which is the only public charging station within about 100 miles of here that's in the US, in Canada, there are superchargers right on the other side, but of course the border is closed and We can't go there to load, so we're. I'll plug in on level two, just make sure they're working and then we'll figure out what to do from there and welcome to Lake McDonald.
This is our charging point. Here they have a 40 amp Tesla wall connector with a commercial voltage of 208 volts. seems to be pretty good until about 11 and then they have a clipper creek j1772. I'm not totally sure how to park so I don't block both, what I'll do is even leave space I think. The j1772 vehicle could park in this space and simply run the cable. It seems to be a pretty long charging cable, so I think we'll be fine here, but I'm going to have someone double check it so we're charging here. this will be our main charging center 40 amps 204 volts that's all this can do okay although it should be okay we'll probably charge it don't know a little more about what we're on let's run At the general store over there, get some of bear spray, which is very necessary and the reason we're going to get some bear spray, I think we're going to try camping tonight on some forest land, just basically drive through any national forest service. own land and you can find places to camp and some of them have campfires and everything so we could be a little adventurous and do it but we could also get some visitors tonight and we should be prepared with bear spray although for the most part we don't they're going to bother us um there's some grizzly bears here that yeah they're really hungry but they should be fine um we'll just keep the food locked up in the car with the windows closed so they don't smell anything and we didn't take them to camp so we just went to that nice one store there, it's really cute and everything is reasonably priced for being inside a park anyway, so we finally got Kyle's bear spray.
We have two of them. for our camp they're not cheap, they're $50 a bottle, but that's a normal price, so they didn't like the upstairs or something. It's basically a much more aggressive pepper spray, yes, and the other night we ran into a lot of wind. and our bets that actually came with our store a bad thing we found socks so we got some better ones and then this is dinner tonight, it's a pad thai and it looks really delicious and it has a lot less calories than the one we had last time, which is much better and also much less sodium and lastly, we have this cute sticker to put on our roof box to start our collection.
Good job, here we go to the glacier in the Yakima rock roof box. Wow I can't talk this is the 16th grand tour for anyone wondering yakima didn't sponsor the trip but they sent us this for free and we're going to keep it it's great guys it fits a lot yeah it actually has quite a bit of room and It doesn't seem to affect efficiency, we're not saying this just because they gave us the box, you're not going to watch any of these videos, you probably even forgot that they shipped it, but yeah, no they won't, but it's super super efficient.
That's great, we're heading to a town called Polebridge, which is quite a bit inside thepark, right on the Canadian border, around here and apparently there are nice dirt roads and we can find some campsites along the way, so let's keep an eye out for those who see what other people are doing and maybe we'll find a place to tonight anyway. We will have some beautiful views along trail six. We've gone down this crazy, twisted road. We were scraping the underside of the car. The whole time we had wheels in the air, I'm not really sure how we're going to get back up, but I don't know if we'll ever have to leave, look at this beautiful place we found to camp.
National forest land is open for anyone to go and explore and stay and um I'm not really sure where we're going to set up the tent the car is right behind me here it was like a patch of grass where we could though what nice Would it be to stay right on this river? uh, it's absolutely beautiful, it's glacier water, it's a deep blue or should I say bright blue, it's very cool and, uh, Alyssa is going this way to explore and see if maybe we can find a place in that direction. the dogs love it, so do we, it really doesn't get any better than this, so this will really be the first time we've set up camp off the grid, we have no hookups, no water, nothing here, it's great, we have uh . our electrical power coming from the car our battery percentage is oh I don't know if you can't see any polarizer ah sorry I can't even see let's take a look it's in a state of charge of 40 42 so it will last us for many days no problem, however, we also need to return to the supercharger, so we may have to go to the glacier tomorrow.
Technically we are in the Flathead. Yes, the Flathead National Forest, whose glacier I think is right there. We are right outside the park. the land where anyone can camp is only two miles away I think, and um, so we'll head back to the park and charge when we need to, however, we've got our power cord coming out, we're going to blow up our air mattress, we've got our kitchen stuff we just moved here take a look at this here we have our kitchen stuff this whole group that's here heard about this land it's just a big family gathering they said yeah no one is using this space these are daytime fly fishermen so we were happy and welcome to be here, which was really cool, uh, let's run down the side, so let's put our air mattress, blow it up there, nice queen size air mattress, ellie is absolutely disgusting, she'll have We have to run through the river and get cleaned up, we have these cool folding chairs that fold up into nothing and of course the screen room which is the dog room as well as where I go to do some work and how's that for having a view, it really doesn't It doesn't get any better, we have our rainfly on, everything is ready, we have the power running on our bed, it's deployed and blown up.
We'll have to put the sheets on in a second and, um, it's really working out well. I'm going to start thinking about dinner here we have a lot of water in the car so let's try one of these prepackaged foods this is pad thai it should feed two people it seems to be pretty good I'm going to like this repellent because I hate bugs you know, I've been using these bracelets, they seem to work pretty well, I'm impressed, so we're going to turn this on, we've got to have the propane in there, we're going to get it going and we're going to have a nice hearty meal for dinner. oh we have a little dinner prepared for us tonight, thanks alyssa, some thai rice, a little spice is about to go in.
Looks great, your food review please, amazing, it has all the flavors, possibly Neem gave you some packets of peanut butter. So you could have that peanut butter flavor and then crystallized lime, so put a little bit of lime in it, which is very important to me with Thai food. I love lime so for me this is an 11 out of 10 favorite so far. I'm going to see how Kyle does climbing this track. I'll give you a quick view of what it looks like. It's very steep. Get on this hill, so we'll see the Tesla fully move forward in phase one.
These are some of the The roads we've been driving on are super full of washboards and the trick is to go really fast over the washboard and that way you don't get stuck in the holes, so the key here It's full speed rally style like You can see we have some oncoming traffic around here, but there are relatively little busy roads and there aren't many cars here, it's just a great place to walk around and take in the views. Join us now in the beautiful, cute town of Polbridge Montana. on the way to the northern parts of Montana dirt roads just to get here is great there is a little store here there are tons of other sick offroad cars this is a beautiful beautiful place just 10 miles from our campground , I can not arrive. better than this live music some food we already ate but let's explore you ready for our first night on the glacier with these stars oh my gosh yeah I'm excited to turn off this flashlight look up it's cold outside Yeah, It is, so we have extra blankets, sleeping bags, Blue has her jacket on, she has her jacket on, Ellie is made for cold weather, join us at our charging point where we have been driving, we have traveled 94 miles since our last load. good efficiency because the speeds have been relatively low, although we have been tearing up some back roads, this is our problem, there is only level two charging here and we need to charge this.
What Alyssa was thinking was that we were going to rent a boat for four. hours and we will sail around Lake McDonald and then we will do this beautiful drive at sunset which I think would be perfect so let's plug this thing in without waiting too long it only has 40 amps and 200 volts and get it charging ellie the prairie dog doesn't know realize but he's hunting oh he just went into the blue hole I saw him uh oh blue don't chase them you can't bother them they're key species all these little holes are those prairie dogs like the ones we saw a few ago national parks or in the Last Theodore Roosevelt National Park we saw a lot, yes we were able to get food, but there are no boats, it was a nine mile hike to get a boat, which I can't do, and there is no hiking just with the dogs. certain trails, but there weren't any around there, so we hung out loaded up to 38, it took us a long time to hang the dime bag, uh, by the river, it was really nice, uh, but now we're going to go to Sun Road and then we'll see how much. load we have left after and then we'll find out how long we have to wait there to load, damn it's a big glacier look at that thing global warming update wall zoo yeah well you know I think in winter this path is probably pretty.
Crazy, the car is running pretty well, we've already gained about two percent on the way down and these views are the best anyway, it's totally muddy and covered in bugs, luckily we have paint protection film so everything should be nice and safe, but yeah, look. Also, using it correctly, all of them are not actually scratches, they are more like dirt marks that just indicate where I am here or on the paint surface, but yeah, I'm sure it doesn't look that good even afterward. We cleaned it up, but what looks great is that, oh man, this was a great day exploring Glacier National Park.
I mean, it's worth the road trip. Now the dogs are enjoying the view. I'm very happy that you can see. Although I'm not too sure you know what you're watching, I hope you're enjoying it, we're going to load up this car, have another good night's sleep at our secret camping spot right on the water and then we'll move on to the next episode, so If you want to see more, please subscribe because we have many more series with this car driving around the country camping and of course you can always support us through Patreon, we all appreciate it. that and many of you have met us at superchargers along the way, check out our sneak peek, it's in the description and we'll see you in the next episode, say goodbye Ellie, goodbye blue.
