Suntour XCM Fork Service - Disassemble/Clean/Lube/Re-assemble

Jun 08, 2021
Hello yours, in my last video I reviewed the Sun HTTP port and included a link to the description of that video, but I have a lot of questions about how to make a video with a Sun Tour Xen port, so I looked around and got lucky . I found this barely used Suntory Axiom

fork

for 20 bucks, a great deal even though it doesn't really need an overhaul at this point, okay, anyway I'm going ahead, take it apart,

clean

it, live it, put it all back together and I'll show you everything the process of doing that so let's start now since it's not attached to a bike I don't have to worry about removing the brake but if there was a brake caliper I would go ahead and get that part out of the way so now First thing I'm going to do is start disassembling here, I'm going to remove these top covers.

You will need a special tool. They come from Sun Tour and they have these little serrations here to fit into the notches on these top caps, they come in two different sizes, the smaller size is usually for hybrid type bikes with

fork

s and then the large size is for mountain bikes. You can find them on eBay or you may be able to get them at their store. local bike shop they aren't that expensive but you can use them to go ahead and just start unscrewing them, don't try to use them like buy indents or something because you're just going to break these things into pieces, get the tool there.

They're cheap and when they both come loose, then you go ahead, you just push this up like this and get them out and get them out of the way, now push these up, the rest of them away here and I pull them out and they're actually different, the drive side here it's got some kind of little plastic rubber thing in there it's a shock absorber and the non-drive side spring doesn't have one in there so I want to go ahead and stay straight and put them back in the same tubes that came out okay so now I'm doing it The next thing I want to do is remove these nuts down here so I can loosen the bottom parts, but I don't want to take them off completely yet, what I want to do is loosen them and bring them in.

Take them out a little bit because the bolts that are here are going to be very, very tight, so what I have to do is push them up a little bit to loosen them up, so what I can do is take my ten millimeter sake here. this over the nut here and there's a little ridge there, so just take this and tap it up and this will help push that bolt in, loosen it up, then I go ahead and take these nuts out of here like this, so now that I got those off nuts I've got those bolts loose I should be able to take the bottom off like this sweet and I noticed a little piece of plastic there so here's the other one for this site like this so now on the bottom of each of these little plungers here's like a little piece of plastic here, they just slide like this, so now I'm going to push these plungers up and off the top here, you can use them like a peg here, but I have this tool, I think it's used for

clean

ing shotguns I picked up at a garage sale, but it's useful for this because then I can push this up like this and pull them out like this and from what I can tell. they're identical on both sides now the next thing we can do is remove these seals here and they're just pressed in so I can use a flathead screwdriver to reach underneath and just gently pry them out. so now inside the tubes there is a sleeve on each side and to remove them they simply snap together now it's very hard to see in the video here but there is a little clip on the sleeve at the back of the fork so what? what you want to do is just use a screwdriver to get along the little snap and just push it to one side or the other and then you can just slide the sleeve out, it's like the little snap over there and it just locks into a small channel. towards the little rear side of the fork so that's all you have to do again just reach for that little click there just push it one way or the other it doesn't really matter which way you push it and then you can . just slide the sleeve out like this, so here's the fork almost completely

I could have taken it apart a little more. I could take out these little plastic ends. Take that little shock absorber out of the spring. Put a. A little bit of plastic ends up there, but it's not really necessary. I have one part far enough away that I can go ahead and clean all the pieces. That's what I'm going to do now to clean them. I'm only going to use them as a degreaser. I'm going to use some hot water, just soap, scrub brushes and just clean all the old dirt and grease off of these pieces and then get ready to put it all back together.
Ok, I cleaned all the parts like I said, just use degreasing soap, hot water. scrub brushes to clean the inside of the tubes I used a tube brush, just push it down, scrub the inside of the tubes, you can also use a rag, all with soap, push it down and then push it out and that will work , but anyway So, all the pieces are clean, so let's go ahead and get ready to start putting them together again. Well, I'll start by putting things back on the bottom here, so those are the sleeves. Now these are conscious parts so if you find that your forks have a little bit of movement and they are loose in there it could be that your sleeves are worn out and see you get replacements for these sleeves the part number and sleep here is the rate seven eight five. 2 hours, so if you search online you can find replacement covers for these before putting them on.
I'm going to go ahead and cover them with grease. I want to grease everything on this fork using slippery oleum type grease. It uses a grease design for Forks, so this could be safe for the plastic on the rubber parts and last, and make your fork work well, so the Oleum slippery is good, come someone name slippery honey, Judy butter, SRAM butter, a lot of them are like all the same things, but I used a fork grease design, so before I put these little sleeves on, I'm going to go ahead and put a little bit of grease around the inside parts here where they are. the fork tubes, it's going to slide up and down in there and make sure you know where this little clip is this little tab is so as I grease everything in there I'm going to slide this in and this little tab is going to the back of the fork because there's that little notch there, so all I'm going to do What I do is put this on, push it down and it'll snap into place just like that and then do the other one too just like that and then, Next, I have these stamps here.
I'm going to put grease around the inside of these. seals like this and these you just press into place just push them down and now you push them mostly by hand but what you also do is take like a flathead screwdriver and carefully just push down around the outside edges of this way, being careful not to damage the seal if you have a big enough sock, it's a pretty big lace, they would fit around the outside edge of this, use that and hit it with something, but it would have to be a pretty big lace, so Anyway, everyone is completely settled and ready.
To move on to the next step, I want to put these plungers on all four tubes, but before that I want to put a little bit of grease on them, so go ahead and put a little bit of grease over here, a nice, healthy layer of grease, and on these little guys. axes from here. and I also take these little top plastic pieces and then I can leave them here and sometimes they don't come out so you have to help guide them a little bit like this and then there were these little plastic pieces. The parts here go on the bottom here the little flange part here goes up so just slide this into place and here too and I'm just going to put a little bit of grease over here it's probably not that important because it's not I think it's really a moving part, but what the heck?
Now the next step is to install the bottom so it is very important that you install the bottoms and the correct orientation with respect to the tops so you need to know which direction the front of the tops is if it is for Chris Brown on a bicycle it would be very easy to see because you have the handlebars to orient yourself, but since this fork is not installed on a bicycle, I want to point out that these fork tubes here are offset forward of the head tube, so this is forward here now, before I install the lowers, I want to put just a very thin layer of grease around the top tubes here, it just needs to be very thin, now I can install the lowers here, the fork bridge here will be towards the front, like this I'm going to slide them very carefully into the tubes, lift them up and pull them all the way up like this now before I put the nuts back on, I want to put a little bit of blue Loctite here on the Locker thread and so just put a drop on each side here, a little bit there and a little bit here to help keep the nuts from coming loose and falling out and the pork from falling apart while you're writing and then getting hurt and daddy being dead is no fun, so now I can go ahead and screw them on by hand and if you look at the nut here, the little nut part will be on the outside and then you'll have like a little cone part. which we're going to deal with in this, just go through these and then put the bushing here, tighten them here like this and have the wrench tighten them and they were pretty tight to begin with, so you want to make sure they're pretty tight. don't take them off, but tighten them up pretty much like this, okay, I'm almost done, now I'm going to go ahead and extend them down like this, so now I want to get ready to put these springs in.
I want to start with, put a nice thick layer of grease on these, there was a lot of grease on there and I saw what kind of people hate that amount here, put them on the plastic ends too, okay, now that once I put the grease on Fortunately , on these things the little end caps on each end are identical so no matter which end goes up and down like on other different models the caps are a little different but on these is the safe that is great so I want to put the one spring here on the side opposite the transmission and the spring that has the little rubber damper on there will go to the transmission side and then while I'm at it I'll go ahead and just clean it up a little bit of this excess fat on the top here, okay, now I want to read how to mount these trim caps here, so what I want to do is they're already set up to have a lot of pretension there, so what I'm going to do is screw them up. , this little part here is going to pull back in a little bit and make it easier to install, so I'm going to do it on each side of this here like this and then I can go ahead and put this here and I'm going to have to push it down and then turn it with Be careful clockwise to screw it in.
First I will try to twist them by hand and be careful not to cross. Thread these because they are plastic threads, you don't want to remove them, so look at this side here and thread this side like this, okay, great, now I can use my son's spinning tool that I use to remove these. the first place and start adjusting them and I will take this opportunity here if your destination is where I have my channel, do me a favor, click that subscribe button and also click that little bell to be notified when I post something new. videos, so it would be really cool to adjust this one and then adjust this one and if you like this video, click the like button, show me you liked it, that would be cool too and you have that Titan there, okay?
Got it all back, give it a try, it's moving nice and smooth, that's how you review one of these son tours on CM Force. Let me know what you think in the comments and don't forget to like the video and make sure to subscribe. Thank you very much for watching and we'll see you next time.
