Subaru X-Mode Offroad Climb Test - Outback Onyx XT

May 31, 2021
In this episode, our long-term 2020 Subaru Outback in xxt takes on the dreaded crossover

climb

coming up right now on driving sports television. Welcome to what is essentially part three of our long-term

test

of the Onyx XT, if you haven't already. Familiarize yourself with this vehicle by watching episodes 1 and 2. Also, if you really don't know much about Subaru, I really urge you to check out our first review of the Onyx XT that we filmed in California last year for people who have seen this program I know this is our traverse

climb

this is a very challenging off-road section we've taken the g-wagen this far we've taken the raptor we've even taken a Volvo um and some of them have done very well and some of them are not so good Now let's see if the new Subaru, I'll come back, is up to the challenge before attempting the cross climb.

I'm going to see which X

mode

setting is best now that we have snow, dirt and deep snow and mud. Deep snow and mud allow the wheels to spin even more, but what do you use on a slippery slope other than either of those things? So before I do the cross climb, I'll first try a simpler but very similar climb down here, this is the same thing.

test

we did with the rav4 prime just a couple of weeks ago, when you get the chance be sure to check out that video too. This time I'll go halfway up, hold my position and then try to accelerate on the way up and I'll do it in both settings and see which

mode

is better.

I'm going to go ahead and get ready for it to be on the edge of the grip, okay, right there, okay, let's go ahead and hold it. Now I'm going to put it. in snow and dirt in x mode and we'll see what this does now there's hill support here which is kind of nice. I took my foot off the brake and it holds it, let's go ahead and accelerate slowly, that was actually pretty easy. Now let's see if deep snow and mud give us a different result. Oh, nice party trick, by the way, you can do the hill descent control backwards, okay, it's a little steep to go backwards, now let's try the same thing in the deep snow and mud setting, see what it is. half way there I'm going to stop because I stopped earlier and now let's accelerate and see what's better okay this allows the wheels to spin more which lifts us up but I feel like actually the x one mode was a better option. with less complications, so we'll go ahead and use it until it runs out and we need to do something different.

Let's take another look to see how the two different versions of X mode responded differently to the slippery slope this time. In slow motion you can immediately see that the mud setting allows the wheels to spin much more as soon as the throttle is applied, where the dirt mode is much more cautious. Note that mode It's a lot more complicated than that with mode one on. I continue climbing until the junction, this section is also quite steep, so the all-wheel drive system continues to train, although our test car is equipped with metal skid plates from the factory to protect both the engine and the rear differential, the eight point Seven inches of ground clearance keeps us safe from the toughest parts of the hill, here again you can see the wheel. braking in action as it is applied to the spinning front wheel which returns the power to the grippy wheels, that is exactly what we are counting on to overcome this transverse challenge, it is called transverse climb or at least that is how it is done.

We called because there is a ditch in the middle that eliminates all traction from both the driver's side front wheel and the rear passenger wheel, which basically means that not only do two wheels have traction, but we are on a slope, so most of the traction has to go to the rear wheel on the driver's side this is a challenge for vehicles with lockers so let's see how it goes well let's go up I'm going to use all the free space of the vehicle I'm sure I just did it I'm With these vehicles you basically just keep your foot on the accelerator, although that doesn't do anything, we're going to need a little boost.
I think we're going to try it a little faster, but we don't want to go too fast or we'll know. plow straight forward, come on you got this, you don't have it, okay, it's never easy, by the way, this wasn't going to be a walk in the park, ever, come on, you got this, the tires just don't have much traction , but I feel like we're a little close, come on, you've got this, you've got this, you've got this, you've got this, you've got this, okay, wheels straight, we're throbbing, no mistakes yet, okay, let's back up just a little parked in the ledge and let's go.
Let's go again, now we need a little more momentum, okay, I'm wondering now. I'm thinking we possibly need a little more momentum, a little more wheel spin, so I'm going to go ahead and shoot deep. snow and mud we'll see if that improves our situation and well, let's go back, let's try this again to be fair, let's go back to where we started last time, a little momentum, okay, that's a lot of skating from the beginning, right? I'm going to strengthen it we're going to get a muscle he's doing it he's doing it yes yes whoa I made it I almost hit a stump but we made it and now we have to go back down okay so I'm just going to put it on snow land. which will activate the hill descent control and we go down.
Now the hill descent control is supposed to use the same speed I use for the approach, but right now it's super slow, so you should hold this once you let go. Very good, and here we go. Wow, the Subaru Outback Onix but this is not the At the end of our Onix XT testing we have a lot more to come specifically, we are going to test sand, mud and snow as the seasons allow. We've had this car for a full year and we're going to test X mode like no one has tried it before. it was just the beginning so make sure to subscribe leave a comment tell us what you thought did you think it was going to be X mode 1x mode to post a comment below also make sure to subscribe share this video with your Friends, do we need your opinions? and your subscriptions to boost our channel.
