Stuntmen React To Bad & Great Hollywood Stunts 1

Jun 06, 2021
What was your plan? So how come he doesn't like breaking his ribs in that shot? Hello, welcome to the first episode of Stuntmen React. I'm not a professional stuntman, Clint is not, so we're joined here by an old friend and incredible stunt professional, Eric Linden. He is both a specialist and a coordinator of specialists, as we like to call him a specialist of specialists. Eric, tell us a little about yourself. I have been in business for 14 years. I do things like crash cars and wire work, fight Daredevil. As Punisher's stunt double, I coordinated the second season of Punisher.

We will sit here. We'll take a look at some amazing

stunts

, some

stunts

maybe gone wrong, and hopefully learn a little about the magic behind stunts. How is this illusion of people hurting each other achieved? without people significantly damaging their bodies? Alright, why don't we get into one? If my. 6. Sweet! Tom Cruise takes some hits for being 56 years old. He hit him so hard with that laptop. Brilliant. Oh how sick! The guy just kills him right there! The move... the move where he likes to spin in the air is my favorite. Just there! And then the launch!

More Interesting Facts About,

Yeah, he just...gets it! Duuude Yes, that was a mistake. Dead! He bounced on her back- oh! I guess this scene, when it cuts to this close-up, is just a guy throwing some pieces of mirror at her and she falls. -100% So how come he doesn't like just breaking his ribs in that shot? You know, he's probably rehearsed it a hundred times without a mirror, not to mention he's padded where he's going to hit, and I'm also guessing that thing is covered in rubber. A lot of times what they're going to do in a big scene like this is they're literally going to make like Insulite, which is a very thin but dense foam and they're going to cover the whole floor and make it look like a mosaic so that when, you know, Henry Cavill falls down.

Not only does he have pads on him, sometimes they are even sewn into his clothes, but literally the floor is completely padded. But there's a part where Tom Cruise collapses on the urinals. I wonder if you can see an indentation where his knee pushes down. You can see it? Oh yeah! Do you see him pushing down on his knee a little bit? No, the pad! Look at this, look at this. Look at that knee. Ponk! Yeah, yeah, he squishes right there, yeah, it's just a nerf bath! It is very likely that almost everything in there is padded.

I love that man. I love the way Cruise is, I need a break. Do you think Cruise took that hit there? He also made What a cool separatist wall! To a platform like the hidden floor you were talking about. -Exactly Yes, I have a lot of respect for how much Tom Cruise gets into the action scenes. Tom Cruise has always wanted to do his own thing. And I think that happened maybe in M.I. 3 the producers didn't let him do any of his own stunts. Basically what he did was good, so I'll produce it. Hmm he So he became the producer of all M.I.'s shows. films.
Since he's the boss, he can just say, I'm doing it. Wow, so you're very aware of every time someone's punches are off by a couple of inches and stuff. -Yes, there is a fault here, it does not connect here. It's like if we put the sound on, you'll never know. I mean, I think Cavill missed a hit when he was throwing one or two misses. When Cavill loads his damn biceps. I mean, I... That's action gold. It is heard as a sound. Regardless of whether their sync is on or off, you need to adapt to them.
The guy they're fighting here is... he's a stuntman as well as an actor. He can help these guys. Part of the stuntman's job is to help the actor look good. So how do you sell a hit? Because the camera sees something that is in 2D, as long as you stack it beyond the person's head, the camera can't distinguish depth. You can be this far away from Clint's face. So if you're going to punch me in the head right now, yes, yes, that's true. He would probably go to the front and you would match him as he went.
With the help of sound and editing, sometimes like here when he starts to move. Let's cut to the other side, where he's spanking the Head from him to the camera Okay, ugh, God. I hate this Ooooh, that was

great

, that was

great

. They turned it into red ribbons. Yes, they know very well who Kylo Ren is AND they are still super cocky! -And you're treating it like this, come on, I'll do a kata behind you. What a move! I saw Arya Stark make that move. What is he doing? What was her plan? Yeah, how do you guys feel about the scene?
To be honest, I haven't seen this movie. Haven't you seen this movie? Who is this boy? Is everything big? Is he a big guy? Eric, you need to set Clint straight because in every VFX

react

ion episode, Clint says, "I haven't seen this movie!" I'm guessing you're not a big fan of the scene. No, I really am NOT, but let it be known that I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. That's why when I see something like this, it really hurts my soul *pain* I've never seen this movie before. I'm seeing this for the first time just now.
It's something normal. It was like a normal fight scene, nothing special. But what makes it bad? What's wrong with it? Well, go to the beginning. I mean, look at the guy in the far back left. He just likes spins, he likes a 360. He's like, okay. 360 fight time! Come on. If you look at them, between each move, the

stuntmen

, who I'm sure are phenomenal and probably super skilled, realize that Daisy and Kylo Ren are there, they're late. So every time they turn back in their move, they're just pausing in their little pose and waiting for them to be ready and then coming in and attacking in time.
Everyone now spins away instead of performing an additional attack. She kicks one of them, they all spin away! Look, what is this cat doing? He's just waiting. There's just a lot of waiting and pausing. You're clearly disappointed with this scene. What would you have done to improve this? He certainly would have used some force powers there. In the new trailer, You See, You Know Rey flips over a TIE fighter, like none of them are leaving the ground. She certainly could have gotten to the other side of someone. She maybe she circled them. This fight seems to lack tactics entirely.
When Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are fighting the droids, the amazing thing about that is that none of the droids are there, so they don't look to see which droid is next. They're just there and they're killing the droid. It really seems like the force is guiding them where to go, and they don't do any of this. As if Daisy needs to see who's coming next. Uhhhh, are they late? Are they on? Okay, I'll block it. -So it should feel effortless. But it's not like that. -They get a couple points for this move here. Yeah, I mean, that was great.
This is one I really wanted to get Eric Linden's answer on. I know that Jackie Chan cites Buster Keaton a lot as one of his biggest inspirations. Yeah, what I love about old black and white movies is that they don't have CG, you know. They're doing this for real with the camera on the train. Trains are like the most dangerous thing to work with. -Safely. The important thing to keep in mind is that if you slip, you die. As if you were hit by a train. Yes, like that! This is crazy. Oh oh! Wait Oh no, it's pointing directly at him.
Oh! Hits him! -Oh Lord. -This is crazy. This is one of my favorite stunts Buster Keaton has ever done. -Oh no. No way. Ah, enough. *Clint freaks out* It's so funny. I like it. The difficulty level is very high, you know? Not that it's not huge. Yeah, but if he had hit that... WOW! -Yes, that hits you in the face! -If he didn't make it, he could derail the train. -Yes, that was good. You see, Buster Keaton is like a D&D character who has like a 20 because of how agility he is. It's time to start talking.
I'm not the one who's going to talk. What we are about to see here is a fight scene from The Punisher and it is from the second season. Now you were the stunt coordinator. Yes. -Which, if I'm not mistaken, means that you're basically responsible for directing the stunts, doing the choreography, and figuring out how everything is going to be filmed. So one thing we'll do is create a previz where we literally sometimes go on location, have a stunt group just in sweatpants, put pads on, but we film all the action and work out the choreography so that you can then show the director and the producers to make sure you get as close as possible to what they want.
A lot of times, if they stick to that roadmap, I find the scenes come out great. As you can see, we didn't have all the necessary staff there, so we made boxes for one character. -Oh Lord. - Man, for a preview, this looks great. H A That guy would just... that would kill someone. -Oh yeah! -Ooh! -In the teeth! -Ping~ -Oh friend, broken leg! Man, a stunt scene filmed by

stuntmen

. It's been choreographed by stuntmen like, it looks so good... The preview still hurts a little more. -Yes I know. -This is very close and I think it's- they did a phenomenal job with it. -There is!
Oh, that guy took it even better on this one. Yeah, so they didn't bring the support leg. Ooh man, this is brutal, man. OOO! He's selling the punches very well. He just wanted John's ass kicked a little. Because I mean, you always see him destroying everyone. Bernthal is doing a great job fighting. He did everything. All the thing. Jon Bernthal is an absolute savage. Oh, oh, oh, this is so good. Oh Lord. Why am I laughing so much? These men are like hurting themselves. -I love that, ugh. -It's so fun! -Are they in blades? -I like how the boys like it, I stay on my bike.
He has his helmet. Everyone has his helmet. This is definitely the best way. -Yes, I am the safest on this bike. -Dude, did you see that guy die? Did you see that guy die? Look at this dude. DOOSH- AUUUGH GAH No, but this is crazy. -How doubtful is that, friend? You could do that? Could you opt for that? I have this. How the fuck... I don't even know how he did that. Did he really do that? -I think he did it! -He must have done it. -Yes, I think he just did it! It seems like they really did that.
Yeah, that's crazy. Are these guys just taking full contact hits in the scene? Like when he kicked her in the head, like that guy...he really kicked her in the head. You know, he's trying a little bit. There is some advantage in knowing that this is going to happen. Then as soon as he makes contact, you will move with him. -Yeah. -But that's the good thing about these fight scenes in this type of movies. They are very real and these specialists really try. Dude, is there a fucking ATV coming? I have four wheels. There are doors, guys!
It's... This is crazy. It's like one wrong move cracks your skull. -God! Dude, this move. (Incoherent madness follows) How cool! -He's like, ahh! There it goes! I mean, that was amazing. - he was sick! -That kind of effects had to burst that, as soon as his foot left the glass. Don't you think they just drove an ATV through it to break it up? -Wait, let's rewind it and see if it breaks before the thing hits it. So when you have to break tempered glass in a movie, it's usually fixed by a special effects guy. Basically, they are like little hammers that go on each side of the glass. -If you hit that, the glass will break, because tempered glass is super hard.
So he's on real glass the moment his foot moves away. You are like you have ten paintings. Yes, the ATV hasn't hit it yet. Oh, it breaks before you hit it! Everything breaks as if it didn't break right there and then it shatters. The rest, everything cracks. There were like 15 frames of his foot coming off the glass and then the ATV crashes through it. Yeah, like the effects guy had to wait for his foot to leave the glass before he could hit it. I mean, that was cool R.I.P. ATV Friend I hope you all enjoyed learning about the world of stunts, choreography and all these crazy risks and, I guess, dangers and strange abilities that these people have.
I think Eric, you've opened a window here that we wouldn't have opened otherwise and I really appreciate you coming here and sharing it all with us. Oh yeah, thanks for having me, it's really fun to discuss this with you if you're interested in seeing what I'm up to on pretty much everything I have on social media and websites, and it's all Eric Linden.
